trial

innocent

In 1995, due to the constant harassment and hostility thrown her and her family's way from their outraged community, a desperate mother named Emily Flood flew all the way from Alabama to New York to personally plead to highly acclaimed lawyer Matt Murdock to defend her son, local misfit Joel Flood, who's been accused (along with his girlfriend Adrienne Bowen and her brother Saul Bowen) of brutally murdering nine-year-old Bradley Gideon. Foggy insists to Matt to not accept the case. Every parent thinks their child could never be a monster. The reputation of Nelson & Murdock will be sullied if they defend a supposed Satanist accused of child murder. And, even if Joel Flood is innocent, they are plenty of innocent people in New York who need help. But Matt won't be swayed. Emily Flood's heartbeat was steady when she assured them her boy would never do such a thing. And, unlike New York, Alabama has the death penalty.

So he sets off to the south, with Daredevil costume (foolishly) in tow, away from the graffiti covered alleys and urban sprawl of Hell's Kitchen to the humid, backwoods country of the small, insulated, God-fearing town of Redemption Valley, Alabama for what ends up being the most important case of his career.

Inspired by the West Memphis Three, this six-issue self-contained miniseries by David Hine and Michael Gaydos (colored by Lee Loughridge and lettered by Cory Petit, with some of the most striking covers I've ever seen from Bill Sienkiewicz) encapsulates the sharp dichotomy between Matt Murdock's life as a lawyer and his life as a vigilante and just how he's able to reconcile his two diametrically opposite selves with himself. Hine and Gaydos accomplish this by thrusting Matt Murdock into a all too real environment of evangelical hypocritical hate and self-righteousness, proud backwater ignorance and small-mindedness, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and small town corruption to confront one of the largest injustices of our heavily flawed criminal court system.

Their Southern Gothic tale of crime and prejudice can come across a bit too melodramatic at times with the number of common, mundane ills and evils Matt encounters during his stay in Redemption Valley, but then I would remind myself of, say, the number of articles about corrupt law enforcement that pop up on my news feed, or the fact that something as innocent as Harry Potter was considered Satanic and even burned in some extremely Christian and conservative places during the late 90s-early 2000s, for two examples. As unbeatable as supervillains and organized crime can be in the world of superheroes, the nastiness inside an ordinary person, the ignorance of a close-minded upbringing, and the judgement of a small community will always be the more insurmountable challenge, as many people's online horror stories of growing up somewhere similar to Redemption Valley can attest.

Daredevil really does have the best stories. This is easily one of my new favorite Daredevil stories.

So a little kid is brutally murdered in a backwoods area called Redemption. They blame all of it on a young kid, saying he's been evil since birth, and want him to get the death penalty. So Matt Murdock comes from NYC to this country side area and soon learns this religious ruled area is really fucked up. As Matt plays both enforcer with the daredevil suit, and lawyer during the day, can he save this man from getting convicted?

What works is the atmosphere and dialogue here. Finally we have a story of Matt being in court most of the time. On top of that the mystery of who's a killer and who isn't is great. The feeling of dread is perfect for this type of story and Matt's hopeless battle is hard to watch. The ending is a gut punch and made me so mad but that's the point of a great sad tale.

This is a must read for Matt Murdock fans. A 5 out of 5.

This was a really good story and wow its dark.

It involves Matt going to a town called Redemption and well the people there are god fearing and they think that Joel Flood has murdered the boy Bradley along with his friends and believe them to be satanists and wlel the trial starts and we have Matt defending Joel but its just such an interesting story as we see twists and turns and focus on Bradley's father Howard Gideon and well Matt believes him to be the culprit and then we follow the inclusion of Daredevil in the story but mostly its the trials and the twists and turns and witness interrogations, character changing their stances and closing statements and the result of the trials.. will Matt be able to apprehend the killer? Will Joel get justice or not and what darkness awaits?

Its such a good story and sure its less daredevil and more of a court story, trust me when I say its one of the best Matt stories like the way the emphasis is on trial, I love it! Its dark sure but it also has that epic factor and suspense and mystery which makes the whole thing a great read and even by the end you don't get resolutions you want, its a twist in a great way and also philosophical if you think about it. Certainly one of the best Daredevil stories ever.

Wow. I am very surprised by how much I enjoyed this. David Hine has written some Grade A Stinkers in the past, so I was kind of dreading how he would approach my favorite character in all of comic books. Turns out, he did an almost-perfect job!

While this isn't strictly a "Daredevil" story as much as it is a "Matt Murdock" story, Daredevil's direct influence is felt throughout. Hine does terrific work here with Murdock's character, showing him to be the troubled, almost bipolar hero he is both in and out of costume, always struggling to balance his law-abiding lawyer side with his mask-wearing vigilante side. Matt's flaws cause some real problems in this story, and his screwups, while maddening, are completely believable for a person in his position. The only thing I wanted to see a little more of was Matt's remorse at these problems he causes, because ultimately they are pretty phenomenal errors, and we never really see him deal with that emotionally. Otherwise, all the other character stuff is spot on.

As for the plot, this feels kind of like a modern-day To Kill A Mockingbird (well, the court portions anyway), mixed with True Detective. Set in a small, dingy town in Alabama, the whole story reads as dirty and depressing, aided greatly by Michael Gaydos's excellent art (I mean, the guy who penciled Alias is tackling Daredevil? Perfect!). I was a little perturbed by the depiction of Alabama (my home state), as it kind of implied that the whole state is just a garbage dump full of completely insane religious nuts and violent, hateful dummies, which is just not true, but for the purposes of this story, I'm willing to forgive it. The story does such a great job of balancing small-town fear and gossip with that other stuff that I'm willing to tell myself "Hine just meant that THIS weird town in Alabama is like this, not everywhere else."

My one major hangup, which is why this isn't getting five stars, is my problem I have with almost every superhero book that ever takes place in a different location than normal: the dumb superhero puts on his superhero costume. I mean, come on. Matt Murdock shows up in Redemption, Alabama at the exact same time as Daredevil, and everyone is like "He must've BROUGHT Daredevil with him!" No. No no no. OBVIOUSLY HE IS DAREDEVIL. Don't wear the suit, you idiot! If you HAVE to go out at night and prowl around, just wear all black or something. Don't dress as the superhero who is from the exact same town as you (I'm looking at you, Bruce Wayne).

The good thing is, this doesn't factor into the story too much, and Hine does a good job justifying the problems this causes with the story. The fact that this book is set before Brian Michael Bendis's run (in which Daredevil's secret identity is outed to the public), also eases some of that burden.

In the end, this is just a great, thrilling courtroom drama, with tight plotting and a very fulfilling ending. The twists and turns are at times heart-wrenching, and I found this hard to put down. Definitely worth checking out if you see it out there on the shelves.

Matt Murdock is called out to a podunk town named Redemption in order to see whether a teenager accused of murder really did it and like a lot of these small towns they hide secrets of their own. Unlike most Daredevil pieces this focuses more on the case and very little on Daredevil in action. Some have expressed their wish that this be a 100% Murdock the lawyer story but that didn't happen.

Artwork is somewhat good to good with a lot of shadow play. Lots of focuses on the character heads as they speak and such. Some might call it severe.

There are strong themes of child abuse in this piece so steer clear if that bothers you. Based on a true tale, West Memphis Three.

Written by David Hine. Artwork by Michael Gydos and coloring by Lee Loughridge.

ARTWORK PRESENATION: B minus to B; CHARACTERS/DIALOGUE: B; STORY/PLOTTING: B minus; WHEN READ: end of October 2012; OVERALL GRADE: B minus to B.

A short and sweet daredevil story - Matt Murdock goes to Alabama to defend three people who are accused of murdering a young boy- they’re being mishandled and assumed guilty because they like metal and have long hair - total satanic panic. But what makes this story great is that Matt fails- the ending is sad but it fits in with the marvel knights line where it all feels more real, the good guy doesn’t always save the day :/

Woo hoo! It's been a long time since I've read a good Daredevil comic book! If you've been following me for a while you may know that I've been disappointed with quite a few of the last runs I've read of my so called favorite character. Daredevil: Redemption has finally broken the bad streak for me!

I think many of the best DD runs really utilize his alter ego Matt Murdock. Murdock is obsessed with being lawful good, DD is chaotic good, they get to battle it out for how the law should be enforced and it's never been done better than in this short run.

Loosely based on the case of the West Memphis Three, Daredevil: Redemption is a perfect example of what make Daredevil one of the most interesting superhero/vigilantes around.

This story arc focuses more on Matt Murdock's career as a lawyer and his trouble navigating the justice system as a licensed lawyer as well as the masked vigilante, Daredevil. Murdock experienced the conflict of knowing that his client was innocent, yet having to perform within the law in order to prove it. It is one of the seemingly rare instances where his alter-ego has no place in investigations, which is something that Murdock struggles with.
Matt Murdock in this arc is completely realistic. All of his flaws and mistakes that he makes are laid out for all to see, as he struggles with the case. The courtroom scenes were well done, thrilling, and realistic. I was completely riveted by this story and the characters.

Daredevil: Redemption is a perfect example of why I hold Marvel Comics so dear to my heart. The have perfected the use of real life problems and social issues in a fantastical way, involving superheroes and extreme personalities. Like with all media, comic books can, and should, be taken seriously. They have the ability to turn humanity's flaws, prejudices, and tragedies around on us and make us face what we are capable of. The gross inhumanity and injustice that is shown in this arc speaks volumes to the reader. It has been quite some time since I was this distraught and invested due to a story. A huge thank you to David Hine for reminding me just how amazing this platform of media can be and what it can accomplish.

This was definitely too dark for me... And made me uncomfortable to read, and it's also so real and violent... Probably my least favorite Daredevil comic, from the ones I've read...
You may like it, it just really wasn't my thing...

When I review a book or graphic novel, I try to pick something that is underrepresented or is deserving of attention. When I saw the rating and complete lack of reviews, I knew duty called.

Inspired by a true true story, this book is absolutely incredible and is my favorite Daredevil story. While Matt dons the suit a few times, this story is as much a legal procedural as anything else. In Daredevil: Redemption he travels to the deep south to represent three kids accused of a gruesome murder of a child. They are metal heads and have embraced rebelling against Christianity and other "unacceptable" religions. The town is populated by conservative Christians who have a hang 'em high attitude. While that sounds somewhat predictable, if you've ever felt like an outcast or are against the death penalty, you are likely to connect with the character and plot.

What David Hine gets that Bendis (who did a great job) and Brubaker (who did a good job) don't, is that Daredevil is the underdog of superheroes. He's always had a tough time, but he perseveres. That's what makes him so cool and why people who don't like superhero comics (including myself) find Daredevil worth reading. While it is all too often absent from his main title, the underdog status is in full effect here.

Whether you've read much Daredevil or not, you owe it to yourself to pick this graphic novel up before it goes out of print. It truly is some of the best you'll ever find.

I was an advocate of the Marvel Knight Line--which was an attempt to tell evergreen comic stories that were not tied to continuity and canon. Usually with higher production value on art and of a mini-series status.

As such, David Hine wrote a story that was more of a Matt Murdock Crime Thriller ala John Grishmam then a standard Daredevil story. Hine is a very hit-or-miss writer for me. While his Bulletproof Coffin is one of my favorite comics, and his Spawn run is probably one of the better runs of the entire series, most of his work-for-hire stuff have been duds.

This would be a great introduction for people who like aren't traditional superhero fans, but liked the Netflix series. It's loosely inspired by the West Memphis Tree, where Matt Murdock is needed to help prove these children's innocence.

this was some pretty heavy stuff and I suppose it makes sense that they used Daredevil as the medium to tell this particular story. It's really more of a legal battle, and thus is in the realm of Matt Murdock more than his alter ego Daredevil. But both come into play in this complex tale of small-town justice and family secrets.

And while it'll always be a mystery how people didn't connect the presence of Daredevil outside New York just as Matt Murdock was in town and despite there being clear rumors linking the two, the piece plays out well both in the courtroom and beyond.

I really enjoyed this mini-series and the second half of the collection really shines as some clever writing and great narrative devices put to good effect.

I liked David Hine's story in the sense that he took Daredevil/Matt Murdock out of his familiar NYC. In fact, this is primarily a Matt Murdock story, him being out of costume for most of it. What I don't get is why he (Matt) felt the need to dress up as Daredevil to investigate the case - won't people put two and two together? Oh wait - I forgot: this is a comic book. Silly me.

Kudos to Michael Gaydos for the art.

This was one of the most interesting Daredevil stories I've ever read (which, at this point, is saying a lot). It's a true crime story blended with a superhero story, and it works...because it's Daredevil. A lot is fictionalized, obviously, but the case was real. And David Hine weaves a really good story using Matt Murdock as the lawyer.

The art was strong too, fitting the story well, thought the three suspects looked too similar.
