As a Note, I do not use AI in any way to write my books. Lots a sweat equity goes into my writing, not computer generated.
Winter Austin perpetually answers the question: “were you born in the winter?” with a flat “nope.” Having returned to her hometown, Winter has stepped into the chaotic world of a full-time wife, mom, author, and employee.
A lifelong Mid-West gal, Winter rediscovered her love of her beloved Iowa with its hot summers and snowy winters. She grew up listening to the captivating stories told by relatives around the table or a campfire. Since becoming a published author, she learned a mindset of a glass half-empty personality makes for a perfect suspense/thriller author. Taking her ability to verbally spin a vivid and detailed story, Winter translated that into writing deadly romantic thrillers. Combining her love of all things rural, agricultural, and military, she’s turned her small town life upside down.
Having no life experience whatsoever with barrel racing or the rodeo circuit, I wasn't sure if I'd follow this. Not to worry, Detective Remy LeBeau was just as clueless as I was in the beginning. Of course, in his job, being clueless isn't such a good thing, especially when bodies keep popping up - all with an eerie resemblance to the woman he's romantically linked with.
To make matters worse, the serial killer is toying with Remy personally. However, protecting his spicy horsewoman, Cody Lewis, is no easy feat. When he can't corral her, he'll settle for reining her in, but even that proves more difficult than controlling the very first horse she puts under him.
The suspense will put you through your paces and keep you turning pages. The climax is wonderful, gripping and exciting. In the end, you've got resolution, but there are still lingering questions, gaps in Remy's back story, and Cody's, that will keep your mind occupied beyond the final page. Luckily, I understand there's another coming. Good.
Normally when I'm forced to take days between reading I have to go back and refresh my memory. That didn't happen with Relentless. Every chance I had between moving and everything else going on I picked it up and just continued on. Very engaging and if you're in the mood for an edge of your seat kind of read, pick up Relentless. You won't regret it.
Dallas police detective Remy LeBeau is a man with a dangerous past. Hand-picked by his boss to investigate the death of a young red-headed cowgirl, he knows he needs to maintain a low profile to keep that past from catching up with him. When the medical examiner ties this girl's murder to the infamous Rodeo Sweethearts killer, LeBeau must tread carefully as he opens cold case files to find the murderer. The deeper he delves into the case the more exposed he and his only witness become - a witness that bears an unmistakable resemblance to the murdered women.
Cody Lewis is a rising star in the world of professional barrel racing. She only needs a few more wins to secure a position at the National Finals Rodeo. When she finds the murdered girl in her horse trailer, she is all too aware of her own ties to the killer that terrorized the Dallas rodeo circuit five years before. Determined to hold on to her dream, she isn't going to let fear or the gorgeous Cajun detective interfere.
This first offering by Crimson Romance debut author, Winter Austin, has all the elements of a great high stakes romantic suspense. Both main characters are fighting their own demons and an irresistible attraction to each other while trying to stay alive. The heroine is a strong female who stands on her own two feet. I love strong female leads. The age of the little woman waiting for the big, strong hero to ride in and rescue her is over. Cody Lewis is one tough lady. Remy LeBeau is a smokin' mix of tough cop and sexy Cajun. He makes my toes tingle when he talks. I love his knight-in-shining-armor tendencies tempered by respect for the strength of the woman he wants to protect.
I was unable to put this book down and when I was forced to, the characters stayed in my head urging me to drop everything and curl back up to finish their story. They have stayed with me ever since I did. Thankfully, Relentless is Book I in the Degrees of Darkness Series. Book II, Retribution, is due out June 10, 2013. I am counting the days!
Are you a rodeo lover? Do you love books that are based in Texas? Do you love a book that has romantic and suspense elements to it? Have I gotten your attention yet? =)
"Relentless" is the first book in Winter Austin's Degrees of Darkness Series and I definitely look forward to reading the second one after reading this one.
The Rodeo Sweetheart killer is back and women with red hair are being targeted in Dallas and homicide detective, Remy LeBeau is on the case to find out who it is. Remy wants to figure out why the killer is targeting certain women and also find out if the previous detectives are hiding something that happened before. He has Cody Lewis that actually finds one of the women's bodies in her horse trailer. Now Cody is in danger of becoming a victim of herself since she fits the killer's victim's descriptions. Remy is not supposed to be getting attached to Cody due to what happened in his past. Unfortunately, Remy finds something about Cody that is intriguing. She's a stubborn, strong-willed woman who will do at anything to have her dream come true in being the top professional barrel racer in the nation. The killer though has other plans and it is up to Remy and his partner to crack the case before the killer kills someone else, particularly, Cody.
Winter Austin takes you on a chase to find the Rodeo Sweetheart Killer before it is too late. Once the killer is discovered, you'll be in shock like I was who it actually was. Be prepared for twists and turns in "Relentless" and once you do read "Relentless" you'll understand why it was named that title exactly.
Remy was not always my favorite character due to his reluctance of showing his feelings toward Cody and Cody was difficult also. She has her dreams though to conquer, while Remy was hiding secrets. Remy was even losing trust from his partner as well due to hiding his past.
I definitely recommend this book to romantic suspense and thriller readers. There is more suspense though in this novel than romance, but you'll be more focused on cracking the case along with Remy than dealing with what Remy and Cody were trying to hide.
I was provided a copy of the book from the Author in exchange for an honest review.
Relentless is Book 1 in the Degrees of Darkness Series. I read this story because I am hosting the author for her blog tour on June 27th for book 2, Retribution. And though I was told book 2 can stand on it's own, I still need to read a story in order of the series. Call me OCD but that's just me.
Well...I am so glad I can't shake my quirks. Retribution is a fabulous read!
The story was action packed from the start and my adrenaline was pumping at every twist and turn.
Then there's Remy LeBeau.
Oh Remy.
A Cajun who has more secrets than the CIA and is just swoon worthy in his darkness, mysterious and tragic past, tenderness, hard ways, soft feelings, and Cajun words and drawl. He was engaging from the start. A really great character and definitely my new book boyfriend.
And then we have Cody Lewis. Barrel racer and Remy's love interest. Cody has a dark and hurtful past as well, and rivals Remy in the secret keeping market. Remy and Cody had lot's of chemistry but if I had to classify Relentless, I would say it was a Romance/Suspense/Mystery genre.
Though I enjoyed the 1 step forward, 6 steps back of the budding romance, I completely loved the suspense and mystery of the story.
Suspenseful to the point I was sitting on the edge of the couch from 60% on. And the ending...not in a zillion years would I have figured it out! Really a great mystery. A very intense read.
Well written. Fast moving page turner. Characters were rounded with such a depth that you grew to know them like you would a friend. Loved the authors writing style.
Fangirling the author and super excited to start Retribution.
This book has everything romantic suspense readers love, and a whole lot more. Cajun detective Remy LeBeau is the alpha hero most women swoon over, and he meets his match in sassy barrel racer Cody Lewis.
A twisted killer is on the loose in Dallas, and Cody Lewis fits the victim profile. Her stubbornness chips away at the wall Remy LeBeau erected years ago to protect the ones he loves. The Rodeo Sweethearts case brings a cold case to life again and puts Remy exactly where he doesn't want to be--in the spotlight.
Winter's knowledge of police procedure and the professional rodeo world shines through on every page. Sparks fly immediately between Cody and Remy and the romance between them keeps the pages turning as fast as the killer stalking them. An amazing cast of secondary characters flesh out the story and leave you wanting to know more about them.
The pace of the mystery is, to borrow the title, relentless. Nor does she make it easy to figure out who the killer is. To me, this is the hallmark of a truly well crafted suspense. The listed genre may be romantic suspense, but it reads more like a thriller. Always a good thing in my book!
This is a griping Romantic suspense. Cody, the heroine, is a tenacious and feisty woman. Remy, the hero, is a suave homicide dective. Together the sparks fly. Cody has found a dead woman in her horse trailer-who has similar coloring to her. There's a serial killer haunting the rodeo and Cody could be next.
Remy is reserved because of his past and doesn't show his true emotions easily. Cody is determined to win the rodeo putting aside her fears of the killer, etc.
Austin does a wonderful job creating suspense and bringing in clues, but still make you wonder who did it. There are twists and turns, but well-thought out which will leave you craving more.
End the end I still had questions and wanted to see more development of Cody & Remy's romance. However, I believe this is the first book and will look for the sequel. I recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic suspense/murder mysteries.
I was given a copy of Relentless from the Author in exchange for an honest review.
When Cody Lewis, a barrel racing champion, discovers a body in her horse trailer, she finds herself unwillingly attracted to the investigating detective, Remy LeBeau, even though he warns her that she fits the description of female victims targeted by the Rodeo Sweethearts serial killer. The Cajun detective is equally attracted to Cody, even though he knows he needs to avoid her because of his own troubled past. As events spiral out of control and the bodies begin to stack up, Remy and Cody can no longer deny their attraction, but they also know nothing can ever come of their love until the Rodeo Sweethearts killer is put out of commission forever.
Relentless provides a behind-the-scenes look at professional rodeo and those who love it. Cody and Remy are real people, with dreams and plans and actions that ring true to their callings, so much so that we hope to meet them again in the near future. I enjoyed every minute of this book.
Relentless gave me what I expected and wanted from Winter Austin. A killer, a mystery and some great chemistry between a hero and heroine.
But it also gave me more. Right from page one, Relentless grabs the reader and throws you into a world filled with passion, evil and suspense that keep you turning the pages. Better yet, the characters’ points of view are deep and realistic. Of course, LeBeau, the Cajun cop and male protagonist, steams up every page he’s on. Great guy with great attitude, and a solid dose of sexy thrown in. As for Cody? She’s multi-faceted and complex. Like other female protagonists I’ve read in other books, she’s got history and baggage to muddle through. But Austin deftly balances Cody’s personal challenges – without making them feeling forced – with romantic tension that begs for release and a serial killer who ups the ante with every dead body left behind.
The result? A solid mystery and a sizzling romance.
I love a strong female lead in a romantic suspense book and Winter Austin delivers. Cody reminds me of the strong powerful women that I see all around me. These women know what they want and go after it. She isn’t about to let someone stand in the way of her dreams, not even a killer. Remy is a steamy hot cop that made me drool. I like a man that is determined and passionate in what he does and Remy fits that to a tee. When he realizes that Cody is in harms way, nothing is going to stop him from doing what he needs to do. There is something about those southern men that just make my toes curl in all the right ways! This is an awesome debut read and I think that Winter brings a powerful force to the romantic suspense genre. This book caught me in the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I love that!
I liked the balance between romance and suspense here. The suspense is not only due to the Rodeo Sweetheart killer plot, but the secrets kept by both Remy and Cody. Their attraction proceeds slowly, which I think helped tantalize the reader and frankly was more realistic that the more standard scenarios where the hero and heroine get physical very quickly. The crazed killer plot was pretty standard, but since I like that formula, I enjoyed it, especially the chasing around after Cody at the climactic moment.
This is the first in a series and although the Rodeo Sweetheart murder is solved, the author has clearly saved a lot for the upcoming books, which I hope will be published soon, or the momentum will be lost.
Relentless is a page-turning, heart-pounding romantic suspense. Both characters have a past that threatens their future. A stubborn rodeo girl and a sexy, hot-tempered Cajun cop come together to stop a serial killer before one, or both of them, end up a victim.
Winter Austin takes the reader behind the scenes of America's rodeo, down the streets of Dallas, and into the mind of a ruthless killer seeking revenge. Read this one with the lights on.
The first in a series involving the same two characters, readers will be anxiously awaiting the next installment.
Winter Austin is a new to me author, so I had no experience with her writing style and I did not know if she would have the ability to hold my attention. However, after reading the synopsis I was intrigued and decided to give the author a chance. Relentless is the first book in the Degrees of Darkness series. I am not sure if the books can be read as a stand-alone as they follow the same couple throughout the series. Therefore, I think it would be best if you read them in order.
WHAT THE STORY IS ABOUT. The story introduces Remy LeBeau a homicide detective and Cody Lewis a professional barrel racer. It began with Cody discovering a corpse in her trailer. The disturbing thing about the discovery is the murder victim bore a close resemblance to her. Detective Remy LeBeau is assigned to the case and is hard pressed to find out the identity of the killer. In the process of his investigation, he would discover that the murder is the work of the Rodeo Sweethearts serial killer. Remy finds himself in a race against time to stop the psycho before he claims his next victim.
MY VIEWS What I loved.
Suspense/Mystery I believe this aspect of the story was well written. Guessing the identity of the villain was not an easy feat. In fact, I never discovered the identity until the story almost ended, which I consider the trademark of a good mystery. The author created an intricate case that have everyone baffled. Not only could I not figure out the identity I had no idea what motivated the killer. The one thing that was clear is that the target were women with red hair and green eyes.
The Story This was a well-paced, plot driven story. It started out slow, but then it gradually developed into nail-biting, edge of your seat read. The ending as it relates to the case was adequately executed. The case was neatly wrapped and left no unanswered questions.
MY ISSUES Character Development. I had a hard time connecting with the characters, which was due in part to poor character. I based my opinion on the insufficient information regarding the past of the main characters. Both Remy and Cody experienced traumatic events in their past and they both went through a period of depression as a result. However, never once did I feel the depth of their emotions. I found them flat and painfully boring.
Romance I did not buy into romance. Frankly, I don’t believe it added anything to the story. The romance just like the characters was underdeveloped. In the same way I could not connect with the characters as individuals, I also could not relate to them as a couple. I am unable to wrap my head around the fact they fell in love with each other, even though they hardly spent time together and when they did, they are always arguing. Another thing that made it difficult for me to accept their relationship was the fact that Remy had a hard time opening up to Cody, and she had no idea why he had relocated from New Orléans to Texas.
CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDATION Relentless is a book for which I have mixed feelings. I enjoyed the suspense and mystery, but the main characters bored me and the romance was disappointing. I had planned to read the sequels, but now I am a bit sceptical as to whether or not I should.
If you enjoy a good mystery, then you may enjoy this book. However, if you love a well-developed romance with your mystery, and characters you can relate to, then this book may not be for you.
This was just an okay read for me. For one thing, the main characters just didn't seem to belong together. Remy LeBeau was a Cajun from Louisiana and while carrying on a conversation would often slip in a few words or a phrase in French. Throughout the story the author keeps hinting at his background but nothing set in stone is ever revealed, leaving you feeling throughout the story as though you don't really know him or understand his motivation. We know he loved a woman named Marie who was killed and that Remy blames himself for her death. In addition, there are hints that his own life, while growing up on the bayou, wasn't all that great. I got the feeling poverty was one issue he dealt with which is why he now drives an expensive car, dines in style, and looks like he stepped from the pages of a fashion magazine. There are also hints that he left Louisiana because he'd made enemies there who wanted him dead.
In contrast, we have Cody Lewis. She's Texas born and bred and is a barrel racer in the rodeo. She talks like someone from the backwoods, dresses in jeans and cowboy boots, and feels uncomfortable dining in a more upscale restaurant when Remy takes her out to dinner. We learn she feels driven to compete because her mother was once a champion barrel racer before she was murdered when someone ran her vehicle off the road, killing not just her but her horses as well. Cody keeps an unopened letter from her mother hidden in a copy of Gone With The Wind. It's not clear why she refuses to open it except that she feels guilty about her mother's death. We also learn that after her mother's passing she spiraled out of control, almost dying of alcohol poisoning. Her best friend, JC, who also rides the rodeo circuit somehow saved her. Even though Cody has known him since they were in kindergarten together, Remy can't help but be jealous of their relationship whenever JC is around.
Now it is my understanding that Remy's and Cody's story continues in the next book, however, there wasn't enough in the first installment to entice me to read the next one. Which is a shame because I love the author's McIntyre County series so far. Like I said, I just couldn't get into this because the characters felt too mismatched and I had too many unanswered questions at the end. The mystery involving a serial killer who targets women on the rodeo circuit resembling Cody is okay although I was confused when the killer is revealed as to why they are seeking revenge on Remy. Something else that wasn't very clear. Maybe it too will be better explained in future books but I'm not invested enough to care.
I gave this a C- at AAR, so I guess that's about 2.5 stars.
This is my first time reading anything from Crimson Romance, and I have to say it wasn't an entirely auspicious beginning. Relentless has a unique setting, and if it were a house, one might say it has good bones. The basic premise of the story definitely caught my interest, but the execution leaves readers with incomplete characterizations and plot holes big enough to drive a truck through.
Five years ago, the Rodeo Sweetheart killer terrorized the Texas rodeo circuit, killing female rodeo riders and leaving a rose with their mutilated bodies. The case went unsolved and things stayed quiet for a time but now it appears that the killer is back. Not only does barrel racer Cody Lewis fit the killer's victim profile with her red hair and blue/green eyes, but she discovers the first body in a trailer. The lead detective, Remy LeBeau, does not exactly hit it off with Cody and his initial interview pretty much turns into an argument with her.
As Remy works the case, his investigation brings him into contact with Cody again and again. Cody competes in the rodeo where the killings have been taking place, she fits the victim profile, various clues and people of interest have connections to her and so on. All of this gives Cody and Remy reason to interact, and the attraction that grows between them actually feels natural. Throughout the book, the serial killer's actions escalate, and this makes sense as well. It's when one gets down to details that things start to fall apart in this book.
3.5 rounded to 4. Intriguing characters, good dialogue, and plenty of suspense.
Remy is new to Dallas PD homicide and he's got a doozy of a first case. He's a lovable Cajun from New Orleans who has a past he's running from. Is it about to catch up with him, though? It looks that way for awhile.
Cody is a barrel racer who is trying to clinch a spot at the NFR, a dream her mother (also a barrel racer) was never able to realize because her life was cut short. Cody's on a mission to complete the dream for her mother. Cody also has a past she's running from, or at least trying to deal with.
Cody and Remy meet when he decides to sponsor her for the semi-finals in Dallas. The first night of the rodeo, Cody finds a body in her horse trailer. The book is off and running from there on out. Remy and Cody are attracted to one another. Both know, because of their pasts, it's not a good idea to even consider a relationship. Then, it looks like Cody is becoming the target of a serial killer. Can Remy save her in time?
This is the first book in a trilogy. While there is plenty of suspense in this one, there is also a lot of background and character development. I finished this one late last night and was glad that I had already downloaded book two. Relentless flows seamlessly into Retribution. Don't skip this one!
First, I love a good suspense. This is one. Second, I love a good series that leaves me panting for the next installment. This is that too. Third, I love a heroine with chutzpah – Cody has it in spades. And I like my heroes, especially the arrogant ones, to be a little vulnerable.
It shows the skill of the author that she managed to seamlessly weave together two separate, and mysterious, back stories while establishing the foundation of a romance which will span multiple books and still told an encapsulated story about a deranged serial killer. That is a lot of action for one book but the pacing was at perfect pitch. Not once was I going, “When the hell did that happen?”
This book fired on all cylinders for me and I was pissed when it was over because despite the very satisfying resolution to the story arc for Relentless, the relationship arc for Cody and Remy is far from resolved and I knew I had to wait for Part Two.
I bought Relentless. I'll be buying its sequel Retribution in June 2013 and I can't wait. And I bet I'll be pissed when it's over too.
A great Kindle Unlimited find. Remy has a dark past with a LOT of secrets, but then again...so does Cody. I enjoyed this mystery, but the romance was pretty slow moving. I did appreciate that it wasn't insta-love, but I would have liked a bit more progression instead of all of the back and forth. Hopefully this grows along with the series.
