The femme fatale is one of the oldest and most pervasive tropes of all time. Ever since humans developed the written word, the touch of the femme fatale has lingered in our manuscripts. The truth is, as much as the femme fatale incites fear and outrage, she inspires awe. There’s something compelling about the image of a woman with power—a woman who is strong while being unapologetically feminine. So often, femininity is dismissed as soft, weak, and delicate. It’s refreshing to see women use the most feminine parts of themselves to assert strength and gain control. In legend, the femme fatale often has the power to utterly dominate and destroy the men she seduces—even when they have exceptional strength, they are no match for the power of dark femininity. The very thing that is used to reduce and degrade women—our bodies, our womanhood—is the tool used by the femme fatale to take back power.
