The ground-breaking photographic techniques of the sometime head of the Sierra Club and his farsighted advocacy of the importance of his medium are discussed in this high-quality edition of photographs of the West.
The 1995 edition by Smithmark Publishers received one-star ratings from two Amazon customers. Their main complaints were poor book design and poor reproduction of photographs.
I read an earlier (1992) edition by the same publisher. I especially liked Navajo Woman and Child and Navaho Woman and Infant, both taken in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. As far as composition, I found the photograph "Church, Taos Pueblo" deeply appealing. This is a slim volume with only 31 photographs. Certainly not among the best of Ansel Adams photography books.
A good, but basic, selection of Adams' photos taken elsewhere than Yosemite. An interesting biographical intro, although it didn't necessarily shed any new light on the life of this icon.
