CRYO: Rise of the Immortals

Rate this book
John's life is ordinary. Whilst skyscrapers soar towards the heavens, leaving a dying Earth far below, John has little to enthuse him about the modern world. He's the black sheep of the family, the recluse, the one who never did anything worthwhile. That is, until John wins an elusive ticket to the CRYO program. Within seconds, his life explodes in a flash of cameras, notoriety and intrigue.

The chance to sleep for a few decades and wake in a new world, a place where life might be better, is all that John can hope for. But, is CRYO everything it says it is? Is the promise of a prosperous future unfounded? Only time will tell, as John becomes one of 50 new immortal souls to ride out the journey of time....

Very plodding through most of the book. Oddly detailed in parts. Second book much more readable.

Rise of the Immortals is a fantastically real dystopian novel! Geoffrey Wakeling has woven together a tale of how things could be if we don't take notice, stand up, and change. Uncontrollable pollution, genetic modifications, overpopulation ... these sound like the usual headlines for today but these could well change the world for the worse if not taken seriously.

Stuff like controlled climates sound good until you stay in them for real. Could you imagine living in an artificial environment like the Venetian 24/7 with even your sunrise and sunset computer controlled for you? That is what John's world looks like. No wonder he would risk death by cryogenics to escape it for a better chance in the future.

Not everything about his world is awful, though. But the more he discovers after he wins his ticket, the more he realizes that important information has been kept from everybody. How people survive in the lowest levels of London, for example, amongst sewers and exhaust pipes. About how badly the deterioration of the world is escalating. Even about how sure they are of the Cryo program succeeding. Suddenly, medical breakthroughs such as regrowing lost limbs or controlling aging, or enhancing learning seem very small rewards for such a big price.

That drives him to leave his family, his best (girl)friend, and everything he knows to take that risk to shoot himself to a possibly better world.

It's unusual (for me, at least) to find a dystopian novel that has a fantastical yet real vision of the future. Could the picture painted here truly happen? Yes, if based on a view supported by numerous scientists. But you don't need to rely on scientists to see it. Food production is down because insects are dying when exposed to pesticides. Pollution is causing more illnesses and blocking out the sun in major Asian cities. Garbage shipped from first world to third world (lowest levels?) countries. Extreme weather, unprecedented natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic activity, the list goes on and all these together are enough to change our world beyond recognition.

However, none of us have the option to time travel into the future. And even if we do, exactly what will we find? The only option is to rescue the world we do have, put our bad habits into the nearest available cryo port, and jettison it into oblivion.

Did reading this book make me angry? Yes, and frustrated with the rate things are changing in the world. That only goes to show how well Geoffrey Wakeling wrote Rise of the Immortals. You lose yourself in his view of the future and then hope you'll have a better go of it - after you swear to improve the world you have right now.

This book is about a guy named John and he lives in the London. This story is set in the future. The world is in trouble. London has flooded, building are 100-150 stories in the sky. Everything is electronic. Every one has to swipe to get in their building, work, every where. You can be tracked by that at all times. They have farms in the sky. There is a lotto going on all over the world to part of the CRYO program. John had bought a ticket and finds out that he has won a chance to be part of the program. Ever since his wife died in a terrible terrorist attack he has felt like he doesn’t want to go on really. The earth is dying and it’s only a matter of time before it gets worse than it is and every one dies. He sees the chance to participate in the CYRO program as 3.5 stars

a chance to sleep through the worst and wake up to a better world. Once the media finds out that he has won he swamped every time he tries to go anywhere or do anything. When he tells his family that he has won and is going to participate in the program not everyone is happy about it. His mom is terribly upset about it, she feels like he is just leaving his family and being selfish. His brother and sister wish him well and are excited for him. His dad is just trying to calm his mother down. His girlfriend is happy for him and this chance. They have to go to what is called the grime level to get picked up for the program. When he gets to the facility he learns there are not enough pods for everyone. You have to go through physical, mental, and other tests to be picked. Not everything is as it seems. Things don’t all add up after he is there for a bit. Are they being told the complete truth? Will John be one of the people chosen or will he be sent home in shame?

For me the book was a bit slow, not enough action. The closer I got to the end the better I liked it. I have the second book but I’m still not sure I will read it. The idea for the story I liked. I idea of being frozen and then brought back 50, 100 years in the future. It sounds exciting. I like John’s character and Kath’s too. His mom was a bit extreme. The book was very well written and the characters where well thought out. The story just wasn’t for me. It isn’t what I normally read but I do read outside my norm occasionally.

I was given this book as a gift in return for an honest review.

Having read inside evil and the tower of souls by G Wakeling I knew I had to read this one too and I wasn't disappointed! From start to finish I was hooked and couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen to John and his seemingly average life in the future! G Wakeling paints a vivid and descriptive picture of the future In john's quest for a better life as he joins a programme to be frozen and awoken in the future but what will he wake up too?! Can't wait for the next book in the series!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Cryo has an interesting premise, but it spends a lot of time on the unhappy feelings of the main character, inside his head. I think, absent or lighter on this aspect, it could have been a nice read. Some interesting ideas and twists on future scenarios. The book sets the scene for a follow-on.

I did not manage to finish the book. People behave in an erratic way, the mother is a total b**** to her kids and people tend to be really happy just to become totally angry within a few sentences. Many things just do not make sense and are far from logical.

I really enjoyed this. The plot and pace were excellent and the characters were well developed. Agnes in particular was someone I loved to hate. Well worth reading. In fact I've already started the second in this series.

This is an excellent and well written book. the world building is done so well you can almost imagine it could be a true story of future events, and the characters are believable.
