When the light of the human species vanished, there was a girl... and a spark.
A century has passed since they arrived. Human history has been erased. Children are enslaved on Alien plantations. Some have heard whispers of the existence of a rebel band of humans who roam free in the forests. Most slaves dare not speak of the rebels for fear the mutant guards will grab and make an example of them.
Eighteen-year-old Freya is pulled away in the night not by the mutants, but by her old friend Finn, to join the Saviors, the mythic band of rebel teens. Her bliss fades when she discovers she is the only Savior without a special ability. She is the odd one out, slowly pushing Finn away, defying Damian, the leader of the Saviors, and antagonizing the fierce and beautiful Daphne. In her despair Freya reaches deep within to discover a dark destiny, a truth so heavy it threatens to destroy her.

Wow. I'm normally more a paranormal fan than science fiction but wow, I loved this book.
I new something more was going on with Finn at first I thought maybe he'd been captured and turned against the group I didn't expect it to be what it was. And the revelation of Freya's shall we say 'Gift'. I'm going to be reading book 2 The Dark Legion ASAP
I will fight and I will persevere. I will put aside arrogance and self-pity. I will inspire those still in chains and will protect the Saviors with my last breath. I will cherish every beat of their hearts. - Freya, The Plantation.
It seems that 99% of YA books are futuristic/dystopian-type stories (a good deal of which also include vampires) This book is a bit different in that it has been a long time since I found a good alien story.
I got this book for free on Amazon.com via alerts from bookbub.com
Fortunately, the second book is also available!!! So no waiting :)
Fighting but no real "violent content". No sexual references or content that I can remember. Little to no foul language.
I'm glad I got a free copy of this book off Amazon. I'm not a big sci fi fan but the premise of aliens running plantations and breeding humans appealed to me. Unfortunately, every aspect of this book was poorly executed. I did not like the main character. All she did was whine. Even though it was written in first person I never felt close to Tick. I never really felt the pain or any emotion for the group of special teens the 12 Saviors.
I kept reading waiting for something to happen, for the plot to develop, for more action. Nothing interesting happened until about 80% into the book. There was a love interest developed in this book, as is common in most YA, but it was also poorly written.
The ending was interesting, if you can suffer through to get to that point. I know this is the start of the series. It just seemed like a bunch of backstory to me. Maybe the other books will be better, but I do not plan to find out.
I must admit that although I used to be a science fiction fan, reading the sci-fi greats like Arthur C Clark or Asimov, it's quite some time since I've read anything in that genre. Partly because I'm a bit out of touch and partly because I didn't want to be disappointed, I wasn't sure about downloading this one. However, I'm glad I gave it a go as it was a pleasant surprise for me. The plot was interesting, the writing style was refreshing and engaging, the author managed to keep me involved all the way through.
I liked this book not only for the way the characters developed as the story unfolded, but also for the fact that the author didn't use 'dirty language' or any sexual reference. Due to this, I am more than happy to give this book to my teenage sons to enjoy. Also, I have already purchased the rest of the books in the series and hope that they will continue to provide a great and interesting reading experience for the whole family.
I liked this. It's a bit different in the way it is expressed through the first person, although I have read books done in this way before, a lot of them don't pull it off very successfully.
I liked the characters, the way their fears are expressed, and the dynamics that are always evident when a small team is forced to work exclusively together. The pace is kept fairly well, and keeps you waiting and guessing how the culmination is going to unfold.
Wow what can I say. This book had me from the first page. The characters were engaging and you could feel the growth of them throughout the book. Fantastic read!!!
Well, first off, I'm not the best "reviewer", but I'm learning, because some books are worth the effort! so, PLEASE, be patient with me! Saying that, since I'm here after reading The Plantation by Stella Samiotou Fitzsimons, means that this book, apparently, is worth writing a review for! So....here it goes >> lol. Let me first say, I almost passed this series up....uhm, Aliens?? really?? hmmm, I LOVE YA apocalyptic/dystopian type books, but ones with Aliens....mmmm...not really the ones I jump on right away! Now I have to say, I am sure glad I gave this a chance, I am now halfway thru book 3 in the series and loving it! I only stopped for a few minutes to take a break from reading and figured I'd give my review for book 1, wish me luck!! LOL Ms. Fitzsimons did a wonderful job describing all the scenery & background, her characters are so believable and real, even the aliens and how it came to be that they took over earth! I don't want to say TOO much and give away any spoilers for those who have not read this yet, so let me just say this >> READ IT! If you have ANY doubts about the concept of it being about aliens....drop your doubts and READ IT!! As I am now into the 3rd book of this series, I will tell you, it sure does make you think....could there really be aliens out there? hmmm....LOL Ms. Fitzsimons' writing is that good! Book 1, The Plantation, starts right out from the very beginning, full of action, so believable....uh..nope, no spoiler, sorry! The story surrounds our main character, Freya, the female heroine , but you will find that out soon enuff. She is someone I deffinitely want on my team! The other main characters are Finn, who I've come to love and sometimes feel bad for him, Damian, who sometimes I don't like very much (kind of a love hate thing, LOL) and then there's Theo, Daphne, Doc, Rabbit, Scout, Tilly....they all play an important part through out this series. They've all escaped from the aliens plantations, where they've been bred/born, experimented on and so on. There's 12 of them, calling themselves the Saviors, learning to survive, stay alive and fight! There's a lot of action, fighting, some humor here 'n' there and also, of course, there's some romance goin on! All in all, I'm totally hooked, I feel Ms. Fitzsimons did a great job, worth 5 stars that I gave it? Maybe not, there might be some drawn out story telling once in awhile, perhaps some parts you could do without (isn't that in most books?), but to me, the good beats out all of that and her creativeness makes it all worth 5 stars to me! I highly recommend this book, this series! I'm sorry I hesitated, had I not, I could have gotten book 4 free for an early review :( Guess that will teach me not to hesitate next time, now I have to pay for it....and yes I will, without any hesitation!! LOL Enjoy! Read on!
Freya is just a girl... a girl that just happens to live in a world enslaved by an army of aliens. In her world children like her are taken as slaves in places called plantations. In these plantations they are guarded by the aliens "pets", which they call the sliman. Possessed with superhuman abilities the sliman created an inescapable environment for the children... or so they thought. Frya and Finn both have escaped their plantation, Plantation 9. With the help of other kids who have escaped they have made a home for themselves in a group of abandoned buildings. Each of the children mysteriously has a gift which helps them survive. Freya feels useless because unlike the others she doesn't have any gifts or even any special skills, not to mention the fact that all she can seem to do is let everyone down. Under the rule of Damien, a super strong teenager, the group has been able to survive. But everyone in the group is getting restless, they are tired of hiding all the time. They want to take a stand and prove humans cannot be forced to do anything...
(Might have a few factual errors in my review, sorry if I do)
Amazing book, highly recommend this undiscovered gem.
Excellent book! The Plantation is unique, I haven't read anything like it. The writing was remarkable, the characters were entertaining, and the storyline was phenomenal. It kept me turning the pages until I read the very last line.
This story reminds me Lost in the fact that the Saviors are hiding out in abandoned buildings, hoping that they won't be discovered by the Sliman and aliens.
The Plantations are terrible places for humans to be. The children that are held there are slaves to the aliens. When their purpose has been fulfilled bad things happen, the aliens see to it that they have no memories of that life.
Freya was rescued from the Plantation by her friend Finn. They join a group of teens called the Saviors. All they want is to be free from the aliens.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a fresh new read!
Oh surely, not another book I forgot to review. thought there were two but then there were four. A free book from the Mighty Amazon Book-forest but nonetheless a worthy find for the inner teen. A future Earth, an enslaved Humanity, a mysterious Alien Race, an enclave of Human Escapees. Sounds like a good basis for an epic Sci-Fi tale of Humanity's fightback against the Alien intruders. Reads like a coming-of-age story of hormonal teens lost in a world they barely understand. But then, then something awesome happens.. one of the teens finds out that she can.. But I'm not going to tell you what that is; you'll have to read for yourself. Trust me; you'll love it!
What a great start to a series! The characters are likeable and believable. I like how the book doesn't end in a cliffhanger yet leads me on to read book 2.
At the beginning of the book I felt a little lost, like I was dropped in to an on-going series, this perhaps being the second or third book. A few things get cleared up as the book progresses - through flash backs - but I still felt like I was missing a few things. Anyhow, narration is 1st person from Freya's POV, in present tense. This usually bothers me but didn't this time, so kudos to the author.
I liked the action and thought the pacing was fair. The characters are described in detail, though those details can be spread out, or more likely, thrown at you all at once, so it was hard for me to keep track of who was who, where they're from, what their special talent is, etc.
Definitely interested in reading #2 because, although not a true cliff hanger, this book ends on a precarious note.
This was a really enjoyable read and a concept that for me personally, hasn't been done to death.
I liked the writing style and the characters are all quite individual and have distinct personalities. I felt there was a sufficient amount of world-building for the first in a series and it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger which is always good.
The only negative is that the tone seemed to shift very dramatically from one chapter to the next quite near the end. I suddenly felt like I was reading a completely different book and didn't know the characters at all.
I saw the love triangle/square coming a mile off and it annoyed me a little that Freya was completely oblivious but I don't think there's a way for it to be done that wouldn't have bugged me.
Overall, a really fun read and easy to get through with lots of excitement along the way.
At first, starting this book, made me feel a little wary - I do love science fiction books, and this one had an extra dystopian approach. I was not anticipating it would suck me in - I had started it, then dropped it bc of obligations, and when I restarted it, I ended up finishing it in a day and a half! It was very interesting to follow the whole story - and explaining Slimans in an unobtrusive way was pretty good, and also see how the rogues were set up and trained, and the new names they would take on!
In the middle of reading the next book! If it's any good like its predecessor I expect to finish it soon!
In this book you will see action and budding romance in a series that I would call apocalyptic sci-fi. What I enjoyed is the enduring relationships that characters have forged, but I believe their could have been room made more character development especially among the main characters. Hopefully, this will be remedied in the next book. (A swear word or two mentioned for those sensitive to vulgarity.) I still give this book 5 stars because I was so enthralled with the action and the drive the characters have in the story.
Talk about an alien invasion! I find myself hooked on the storyline and most of the characters. I have tons of questions and some I am not sure I could rightfully say I should get the answer to, it could detract from the mystery and suspense in the book. But I can't help wonder when did this invasion happen exactly? Who are these aliens really? I know some of questions will eventually be answered, so here comes book two!
I truly enjoyed this book. It is a new take in alien invasion with a twist, and the trust is what makes it so enjoyable. The pace is great and moves you through the story quickly. The plot is very good keeping you glued to the book
The characters are a unique mix that really complement each other well. Freya is a different and unique heroin and is extremely likable.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and will have to buy the next one.
what a great start to a great series. The characters are wonderfully real and believable. the storyline is thoughtprovoking and engaging. there are a few hiccups where the writing jumps to a different unrelated thought sometime but it was an annoyance rather than put me off of the series. I love Freya. she is strong, loyal, vulnerable, broken, impulsive, and extremely likeable.
This story consumed me from the first page and would translate well into an action movie or TV series. I believe anyone would enjoyed reading the Hunger Games would love this story too. I rate this book in my top five reads of the year.
I had a hard time getting into the first couple of chapters but by the fourth I was hooked. Great twists at the end with relationships, strengths, and group composition. I plan to read the second book.
Excellent book! The Plantation is unique, I haven't read anything like it. The writing was remarkable, the characters were entertaining, and the storyline was phenomenal. It kept me turning the pages until I read the very last line.
The Plantation (Book 1) was very good! I couldnt put this book down for anything! I read this in one day and cannot wait to get started on book 2. I couldnt believe it was free on Amazon!
It sounded like an interesting premise, and perhaps someone who's not an English teacher can get through it. It was bad enough trying to get past the run-on sentences alternated with overused fragments, but then it became more and more difficult to ignore the improperly punctuated introductory clauses and compound sentences. (Nails on a chalkboard for me, just getting louder and louder with each frequent iteration.)
But that was just the beginning. The writing is just stylistically bland; the description of events read more like a grocery list than a narrative. Nonetheless, I've gotten past that with other books, and the reviews motivated me to push through and keep reading. If the plot is good enough, I can forgive style and even editing.
The last straw came when logic flew out the window. In this world, kids are abducted at the early ages, kept as slaves, and refused the decency of names (they don't even remember any names before abduction, so they make up names for each other). But, miraculously, upon being liberated, they can read difficult texts? You mean their captors let them learn how to read?
Sorry. That was it. I threw my hands up in frustration and deleted the book. Done.
