Oh, where to start.

Since I am the one that organized this review for Pure Textuality Virtual Book Tours, I read the synopsis of this book long before agreeing to the review. I originally was going to just do a giveaway and then decided I wanted to read it badly.

The first thing I noticed is that the beginning of this book feels NOTHING like the synopsis. I didn’t feel it was in a bad way at all but at first you’re all like “Wait…..what??”. Then the pieces start to fall into place. The main character Gwen is a lot of fun. She’s hot tempered, yes, but also sports a GREAT sense of humor and confidence. She’s a scientist in a pharmaceuticals lab and you know right from the beginning that she’s one smart cookie. And that she’s a little OCD about “working the problem”. Failure bothers her on a deep level and remember that hot temper we mentioned?? Yeah, failure triggers that in a BIG way.

Then we have her bestie, Melanie. Melanie is a bit of a spitfire. And she’s a touch boy crazy. Ok, maybe more than a touch. Her interaction with Gwen very much reminds me of a good friend of mine. The way her and I interact is a lot like Gwen and Melanie and that kind of drew me to the character.

Knowing that there is a supernatural element to this book, the beginning feels a little slow as you’re waiting for the supe to show its head. However, I found that it was all very necessary to get to know the character and why she handles things the way she does later on in the book.

I am going to admit that I have two very favorite characters in this – Kade and Z (Zafir). Kade is man candy with all the good stuff added in – honor, devotion, humor, sweetness and a sexy voice.

Z is like an over grown man child stuffed inside a whole lot of muscle. He’s HILARIOUS. One of the best “side” characters I have ever read. Enough so that I have my crossables crossed that we get to see more of Z in the coming books in the series.

Oh! And the ending seriously had me all teared up! In a sort of good, sort of bad kind of way.

Out of Reach scores 5 stars from me! I was so thoroughly impressed with this book that before I was even finished, I started ragging at all of my closest bookworm friends about how they NEED to read this book (as is displayed in Ginny’s review down below). The characters are well rounded with a cast of hellions that all offer their own little something to the story. The plot line is intricate and holds you firmly in the story, yet it’s not overwhelming causing you to get lost in story details.

I can’t wait to see where this series goes! I already started bugging the author about an advanced copy of book #2 and I don’t intend to let up until that shit is in my inbox. Wink wink!

Interesting storyline that even a non-supernatural fiction reader will enjoy. Better character development would have been helpful. The lack of editing was very distracting. Having said that, I'll read her next work, hopefully a series?!?

Definitely worth your time

I almost stopped reading this book. The first 20 pages or so had me pretty confused. But I'm glad I continued reading. I really liked the two main characters. Their teasing/sarcasm to each other really kept me reading. I'd recommend this read for sure.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I related very well to the quirks of the main character Gwen. How she reacts when she is annoyed and forgets things, constantly tripping over things I've left on the ground and forgotten about, and the belief that make-up should not be worn all the time. I also enjoyed the split narrative. I thought at first that the book was taking too long to get to it's point, but then I realized that she was doing 2 points of view then converging the plot line from where the 2 characters meet up and the secrets been revealed. Once the story reached that point it flew to the ending. I would have liked a little bit more lead in to the ritual or maybe some suspense, I liked the battle in her mind choose right or your secret desires, but it definitely wasn't very suspenseful. So if you like a lot of drama or action probably not the book for you.
This supernatural world she created with the wanderers, former Sylphs now forced into servitude of the angels; and charged with keeping the remaining Sylph essences contained was very interesting. A extremely nice change of pace from vampires and werewolves. Gwen, who works for a pharmaceutical company is unknowingly working with sylph essence, and her company is being controlled by a rogue sylph who is trying to free more of his kind so they can possess humans. Kade, a wanderer and her best friend figures out what she is working on and when trying to remove all traces of this project from the company gets discovered by Gwen and reveals to her the powers she possesses and forces her into a new world she wasn't expecting. She now has to decide between this new destiny and her old life.
I found the characters enjoyable and relatable, although I was surprised how quickly Gwen, fell into such an easy rhythm with some of the wanderers. And how little fear or confusion she had about her role in things. The author set up in the beginning that this was a woman who wanted to find proof that supernatural beings existed, and does, but I still thought it odd that she should be able to deduce things about these men's characters, behaviors and expressions so quickly when she was only with them a couple days before the rituals began. I mean one of them she almost had a big brother little sister vibe going from the moment they met and to me those kinds of things don't happen instantaneously.
I really like the way the book ended, that Gwen is committing to the promises she made to her husband, and not running off with her best friend who she does have feelings for, because that's reality. The Guy waited to long to make a move and now they bot have to deal with the consequences that she is unavailable at the moment. I would have been disappointed if they had run off together. Overall this was a great opening novel, with a good solid cast of characters. I look forward to seeing what more this author has in store for us.

This was a fun start to what promises to be an interesting series! I rather enjoyed the world that Stover has created in this book and am greatly looking forward to see what happens in the sequel, murr!

I really liked Gwen in this book. She’s strong willed, extremely sarcastic (a trait that I found I enjoyed a lot), intelligent, and not afraid to take on the task that she finds herself assigned. Since I tend to be a workaholic, it was easy to relate to her throughout the book and I could understand how she could find escape in work over other enjoyments. Kade, on the other paw, was a bit hard for me to get into. His character didn’t really stand out that much for me and while I liked reading his parts of the book, he didn’t leave that much of an impression on me when all was said and done. Actually, if I’m to be honest, most of the Wanderers fell flat for me as far as connection is concerned. The notable exception to this was Z, who I loved simply because he struck me as the comedic, fun loving type of guy.

And in that regards I would say this is one of the areas where the book fell a bit short with me. As far as character development was concerned, the only one whom I got a good sense of personality from was Gwen. The rest of the characters were either underdeveloped or not utilized enough to really give me a sense of who they all were. And this is really sad because I wanted to spend more time with everyone and really get to know them.

The storyline itself was fun and there were a great many moments which I found humorous, partly because of the sarcastic nature of Gwen and partly because of the interaction between various characters. The byplay between Gwen and Z left me smirking a lot of the time. I also found Stover’s take on angels to be intriguing and unique. The idea of Sylphs as evil genies who grant humans power through wishes worked strangely enough.

So what didn’t work for me? Aside from the underdeveloped characters issue, the ending not only felt rushed but it was also anticlimactic. The ease with which Gwen completes her mission was just too simple. And the speed at which events happened at the end left me not only confused and wondering why they were there, but also left me wishing that Stover had taken the time to explain things a bit more. Why was Gwen kidnapped? What did Kade see during the resealing ceremony? What’s Mr. Taylor’s backstory? These questions and more (some formed during the earlier part of the book) were left unanswered, and while I know that this is the first in a series, I felt like there was more that could have been expanded on in general in this first installment.

Still, like I said at the start of the review, I found this to be a fun read. Yes, it may not have fulfilled my expectations, but it still provided a much needed escape and was entertaining. It will be interesting to see how events in the next book play out. =^.^=

My Review
This was an interesting story about Gwen, who has hidden talents and Kade who wants to discover what those talents really are.

The story started out kind of slow with lots of descriptive stuff about how Gwen was living her life as a researcher at a Pharmaceutical company. She has two close friends, Melanie and Kade, who hang out together all the time. Kade and Melanie also work at the same company as Gwen but in different departments.
Gwen is working hard to discover a new drug but is having stability issues with the compound she is working with.

Kade is a wanderer along with 11 of his other buddies and they are trying to control any slyphs that escape from their sylph globes. They need someone with Angel blood to help seal the slyphs back into their globes. Kade believes that Gwen is one such being and has been keeping tabs on her for years waiting to see if she manifests any special abilities.

Through the book you find that Kade and Gwen may be getting closer and almost hope that something will happen between them. Although Gwen may have some feelings for Kade, she also has a relationship with a hot fireman so she is not willing to give into those feelings. Kade has no such reservations and is perfectly willing to run off with Gwen.

This is the first in the Wanderer series and I was happy it did not end with a cliff hanger. It did end in a way that you just know that there will be more to tell about the whole Kade, Gwen, and the bad slyphs thing. I am looking forward to the next in the series. If it was already out, I would have started reading it right away!

So I get this e-mail from Jena yesterday asking if I could possibly read this book for a review today. Now I love Jena, but I’d just gotten this ARC for a book I’ve been dying to read. So after looking back and forth between the two files I let out a little sigh and said “I’ll see what I can do.”

I want you to know this so you know how to handle the tone of my review.

At first, I was not a fan. There are certain styles of writing that are totally fine and people love, but just don’t do it for me. Sentences that feel clipped for one. Which this book starts with. Add in a couple of points where I was making funny faces and asking Jena if she was sure I was going to like this and you could say I was skeptical at best.

I might have actually threatened her.

I probably owe her a gift basket or something…

Because fact of the matter is, book did get good. Book got good fast. Book got… okay, I can’t keep talking like that. It’s just that one second I was dismantling it, the next I was frantically flipping pages wondering how the fuck things were going to resolve themselves.

Answer:

While this book wraps up its plot in a neat little bow, it leaves the larger story arc open for follow-ups without that painful cliffhanger moment.

Unless you’re talking about the…err… personal angle. That… well I just watched the new episode of River Monsters and the host had to dig a barbed hook out of his thumb. Or I’m assuming they got it out since I ran from the room the second I saw there was SOMETHING IN HIS THUMB. The resolution for that personal angle is probably going to hurt just as badly. There is no easy answer. And sick fuck that I am, I can’t wait to read more about it.

But it’s also not one of those “are you fucking kidding me” cliffhanger moments.

No clue how the author did it.

She must be a genius.

Gwen Cohen works for Preston-Ward Pharmaceuticals in the drug research and development program. She works in a lab and working rules her life. But she does allow a little fun into her life with her best friends Melanie and Kade. When she encounters two men fighting and tearing up her lab in the middle of the night, her entire world is turned upside down. She has to leave behind her friends and family to fulfill a destiny she never knew she had. Can she do it? Is she as strong as they believe her to be?

I was really frustrated with this book. It took me a while to get into it because it is slow to get going. The author is very descriptive in her writing and it takes a loooooooong time for anything to happen. Then, when it does, instead of it dragging out like the first part of the book, it's over in a flash. Based on the beginning of the book, I figured Gwen saving the world would end on a cliffhanger but it's over and done like a 2-minute quickie. There is an epilogue that leads you to believe that Gwen's job isn't over but you kind of already know that because the title says it's a series.

I did like the characters and the plot is good and while it does entail beings that have been written about before, it is a different storyline. If the book was less developed in the beginning or more evenly developed toward the end, I would've liked it more. I would like to see what happens to these characters as they are a lot of fun and the concept is a unique one.

I was given copy of Out of Reach by the author as part of a blog tour and in exchange for a fair and honest review. Now that that is out of the way let's get to the good stuff. Out of Reach has an interesting premise, that red heads are the descendants of angels and those with enough power like Gwen help the wanderers keep the sylph (the bad guys) imprisoned so they don't wreak havoc on mankind.

For all her life Gwen is unaware of her legacy or that the supernatural even exists, or that one of her best friends has been keeping an eye on her for years. Kaden is a super hot Wanderer who had undying faith in Gwen's abilities even while his brethren don't and encourage him to move on. I like the relationship between Gwen and Kaden they start out as the best of friends until they are not, and I like that they really didn't get their happy ending, cuz you know the world doesn't really work like that.

The story moves along at a good enough pace and I finished the book fairly quickly. I have to say though I would have preferred more suspense. There was no real feeling of danger for any of the characters and if you want a dark edge of your seat urban fantasy this really isn't it. However it was a very good read and I would like to read the next in the series.

I was given this book for an honest review and was pretty happy with it. The book has a pretty cover, which is a must for me. If a book doesn't have an eye catching cover, I won't even give it a chance. I felt like the story was a little slow paced in the beginning, but it eventually picks up in the middle. I really liked the fact that it's not in just one p.o.v., but two. It helped me understand the characters a little more and it's not something you find in a lot of books. I was a little conflicted between Gwen and her husband vs. Gwen and Kade. I wanted her to stay faithful to her marriage, but at the same time you realize she is better with Kade and that they are meant to be together. Neither one would make a move and now it's too late. This book was different than books I've read in the past.. in a good way. I liked the characters and the story line. Gwen isn't a super model ass kicking woman like you usually read about. She has flaming red hair, bad temper, super smart, and is powerful, just not in the knife throwing way. I enjoyed reading this book and am glad to have had the opportunity to review it.

I love this book! Gwen was brilliant and I loved that she couldn't see the paranormal around her. Kade is a fabulous friend and I wondered why he hadn't made a play for Gwen before. The book is a whirlwind and is read from different points of view. That threw me at first but it puts everything into perspecitve.
The descriptions of the things that Gwen was seeing were real and I love how she finally came into her own power. Sometimes anger is the go-to emotion! I can't wait to see where this is heading and I would love to see a story about Z! I don't have the heart to give spoilers because this is a story that everyone needs to read.

I was given this book by author for honest review. Book 1 in The Wanderer Series gives a history of how Kade along with 11 of his brothers turn Wanderers in order to watch over the Sylph’s and how Gwen Matthews, a Nephilim, has to learn about and control her powers in order to save the world. This book takes an interesting journey into the world of good vs evil with a love triangle thrown in to mess up the works.

Good Paranormal book to read!

Throughout the book, the point of views changes and you have to make sure you keep up. Also, at one point the book totally confuse you that you are left kind of baffled how the author just did that. I must say her strategy of writing the book wanted me to continue reading, and finding out more. It is a read good book to read.

I thought this story was fun, and that it got better and better as it went along, ending with a great set-up for the next book. The lack of editing made it difficult for me to focus on the story, but overall I thought it was very interesting and am excited to see what happens next!

I love when an author writes a book with a heroine with actual humanity. By that I mean she wasn't perfect, she almost reminded me of myself. Clumsy and forgetful and witty included. Not my usual type of read but this book had it all and I would highly recommend it.

An enjoyable read with well-developed characters, good world-building, and an enticing plot. Things got off to a bit of a slow start, but once the story got moving, it was very engaging. I'll be looking for more once I make more headway in my to-be-read list.
