Kothi Kommachi is the first of two autobiographic volumes of Dr. Mullapudi Venkataramana (June 1931- February 2011), writer, film-maker, and a legend in Telugu literature.
Mullapudi Venkata Ramana is a Telugu story writer, known for his hilarious style of writing. He has also written screenplay, story and dialogues for many movies under the Bapu-Ramana combination, including Saakshi (Bapu-Ramana's first movie), Panchadaara Chilaka, Muthyala Muggu, Gorantha Deepam, Manavuri Paandavulu, Rajadhi Raju, Pelli Pustakam, Mr. Pellam and Radha Gopalam. Having penned both heart-touching and rib-tickling dialogues, the Bapu-Ramana association has completed 60 years, and is still going strong.
He frequently said, "From the time I came to Madras very early in my life, to the people Bapu and I came across in this journey, the experiences, learning...my life has been like the proverbial monkey on the tree - leaping from one instance to the next, non-stop." Hence the title Kothikommachi.

'Mullapudi Venkata Ramana' was born in a middle class traditional family and his childhood mostly spent in a tiny village called Dhowaleswaram near Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. Ramana had one elder sister and a younger brother. It was a happy family with no troubles until his father expired when Ramana was 9 years old.This turned their family status upside down and they shifted to Chennai (called Madras in those days) for better opportunities. Ramana's mother Mrs. Adilakshmi took all the pains to raise the family in such situation. Ramana's education and career happened in Madras itself. During his study days itself, Ramana had shown penchant for literature in Telugu and inclination in writing up short but effective storyline.
During the same period, he got a good friend in 'Bapu', their friendship was unconditional and mutually expending talents as Ramana is good at write ups where as Bapu, is good at painting and caricature drawing. Soon they excelled in their talents and gave some of the most admirable Telugu films later in their life.
HE RECIEVED THE PRESTIGIOUS "RAGHUPATHI VENKIAH AWARD" from government of Andhra Pradesh, India.
During the same period, he got a good friend in 'Bapu', their friendship was unconditional and mutually expending talents as Ramana is good at write ups where as Bapu, is good at painting and caricature drawing. Soon they excelled in their talents and gave some of the most admirable Telugu films later in their life.

ముళ్ళపూడి వెంకటరమణ గారు మనకి బాపు-రమణ జోడీ లో ఒకరిగా సుపరిచితం. బాపు తీసిన సినిమాలకు రాసిన కథల ద్వారా, బుడుగు, రెండు జెళ్ళ సీత, సిగేనపెసునంబ, బాపు బొమ్మల వెనక కథల ద్వారా మనం వద్దనుకున్నా, మనకి తెలియకున్నా, మనం పట్టించుకోకపోయినా మనకి జీవితం లో ఎదో ఒక సమయం లో తారసపడే ఉంటారు. అయన రాసిన సినిమా సంభాషణల తో, కథల తో, మనల్ని నవ్వించే ఉంటారు మనసు గిలిగింతలు పెట్టించే ఉంటారు. కానీ అయన జీవితం లో ఎన్నో కష్టాలు చూసారు. సుఖాలు నుంచి కష్టాలలోకి వెళ్లారు. అయన జీవిత కథే ఈ కోతి కొమ్మచ్చి పుస్తకం. మూడు భాగాలుగా హాసం ప్రచురణలు వారు విడుదల చేసారు. ఇది మొదటి భాగం సమీక్ష మాత్రమే.
ధవళేశ్వరం లో కొంచెం ఉన్నత కుటుంబం లోనే జన్మించినా చిన్ననాటే తండ్రి వియోగం తో కష్టాల బాట పట్టారు. తల్లి తో మద్రాసు చేరి కటిక దారిద్యం అనుభవించారు. వారి తల్లి గారు విస్తళ్ళు కుట్టి, యుద్ధ సమయం లో మిలిటరీ వాళ్ళకి చొక్కా బొత్తాలు కుట్టి, చిన్న చిన్న ఉద్యోగాలు చేసి, పస్తులుండి రమణ గారిని చదివించారు. చిన్నప్పుడే కష్టాలు సుఖాలు చుసినందువల్లో, స్వతహాగా అలవడిన చమత్కారం వల్లో లేక వారి తల్లిగారు నేర్పిన జీవిత దృక్పథం వల్లో ఎక్కడా విషాద గాథలా ఆ స్మృతులని రమణ గారు ఈ పుస్తకం లో నెమరు వేసుకోలేదు. కష్టాలని కూడా చమత్కారంగా ఎలా చెప్పాలో రమణ గారికే చెల్లింది. కష్టాల్లో ఆదుకున్న ప్రతి ఒక్కరిని మనసారా తలుచుకొని, పుస్తకం ద్వారా మనకి పరిచయం చేసి తమ కృతజ్ఞత ని తెలుపుకున్నారు.
రేడియో కథలు, చిన్న చిన్న ప్రచురణలలో అయన రాసిన కథలు తో మొదలైన రచనా ప్రస్థానం ఆంధ్ర పత్రిక లో రిపోర్టర్ గా, తర్వాత సినీ రచయతగా ఎదగటం మనకి కళ్ళకి కట్టినట్టు ఆవిష్కరించారు. కానీ ఈ అనుభవాలు ఎక్కడా ఒక వరుస లో రాయలేదు. ఒక అనుభవం చెప్తున్నప్పుడు అందులో వ్యక్తుల మీదో, సంబంధించిన అనుభావలమీదో, అసలు సంబంధమే లేని విషయలమీదో పక్కదారి పట్టేసి, రెండు మూడు నలుగైదు పది పదకొండు పేజీల తర్వాత మళ్ళి రహదారి మీదకి వస్తారు. ఇది పుస్తకం మొదటి పేజి లోనే ప్రస్తావించి మనకి ఒక హెచ్చరిక కూడా జారి చేస్తారు. ఈ పుస్తకం పేరు కోతి కొమ్మచ్చి ఎందుకు పెట్టారో, ఒక కొమ్మ మీద నుంచి ఇంకో కొమ్మ మీదకి ఎగురుతున్న కోతిలా అయన ఆత్మ కథ ఎన్ని మలుపులు, పక్కదారులు పడుతుందో. కానీ దీనివల్ల ఎక్కడా మనకి పెచ్చుమేరకు కూడా చిరాకు అనిపించదు. మాయాబజార్ నాటకం లో 'ఆహ రమణ గారి రచనా చమక్రుతి ఏమియో గాని.....' అనుకుంటూ హాయిగా నవ్వుకుని మనం కూడా ఆయనతో ఒకో కొమ్మ మీదకి నవ్వుకుంటూ దూకేస్తాం.
ఈ కథ ప్రస్థానం మొత్తం లో దాదాపు ప్రతీ పేజిలో బాపు ఉంటారు. రమణ చిన్ననాటి స్నేహితుడిగా, అయన కష్టాలకి సాక్షిగా, అయన కథలకి అలంకారంగా, కొండంత అండగా. అందుకే పుస్తకానికి ఇండో పేరు బాపురమణీయం. బాపు తో పాటుగా, రమణ గారికి తారసపడ్డ పెద్దవారు, చిన్నవారు, దోడ్డమనసు వారు, ప్రోత్సహించిన వారు, తిట్టిన వారు, అప్పులిచిన వారు, తీసుకున్న వారు ఎందరినో ప్రస్తావించారు. నండూరి రామమోహనరావు, అంత్య ప్రాస ఆరుద్ర, ఆంధ్ర పత్రిక సహోద్యోగులు, నిర్వాహకులు, రేడియో అన్నయ్య, భానుమతి గారు, ఎంటి రామారావు గారు, అక్కినేని నాగేశ్వరరావు గారు, ఇంకా ఎందరో మహానుభావులని వాళ్ళతో అనుభవాలని మనతో పంచుకుంటారు. ఈ పుస్తకానికి మరో ప్రత్యేకత బాపు గారు వేసిన బొమ్మలు.
రమణ గారి అనుభవాలని చిన్న చిన్న బొమ్మల తో మన కళ్ళ ఎదుట చిత్రీకరించారు.

Forget about the incredible persona who wrote this book or the incredible friends of his whose memoirs would have been featured in this book, the title in itself is so delicious , i picked it the first moment my eyes met the trajectory of this book.This is the life story of Ramana through his trademark satiric path.
Great reminiscences of the pristine golden age of telugu cinema. Reading about the story of Ramana is also equal to reading about Bapu( Their lives are so interwoven, you would feel like watching a multi starrer book all through). Great cartoons(off course by Bapu), rare pictures add to the experience of reading this book. A fun,witty read and not to be missed by those who would like to see the clean,creative films back in Telugu

అనుకోకుండా ఈ పుస్తకం ఆడియో రూపం లో ఇంకోసారి విన్న పిమ్మట , ఈ పుస్తకానికి ఒక చిన్న సమీక్ష రాయడం బాధ్యతగా అనిపించింది.
కొన్ని జీవితాలు తొంగి చూడాలంటే , దానికి మన జీవితానుభవాలలో కూడా కొంత లోతు సంపాదించుకోవాలి. ఈ పుస్తకం అటువంటి కోవకి చెందిందేనేమో. కష్టాలని హాస్య రూపం లో చూపించడం ఈయనకే చెల్లిందేమో . ముక్యంగా రమణ గారికి వారి తల్లి గారికి ఉన్న అనుబంధం , మరియు రమణగారు వారి బామ్మా గారు మధ్య ఉన్న అనుబంధం. ఈ పుస్తకం ఎంత కడుపుబ్బా నవ్విస్తుందో అంతే తీవ్రంగా ఒకటి రెండు చోట్ల మిమ్మల్ని ఏడిపిస్తుంది కూడా.

I am reading this book for the second time.
It is not an autobiography but a memoir that presents the events and encounters, not necessarily in a chronological order, that shaped Ramana's life. Ramana's strong point is his language and his ability to convey humor through it. There are no comic situations; his language itself is humor. He can be called the Wodhouse of Telugu literature. While Wodhouse's humor is satire on lazy English aristocracy, Ramana makes you experience the pathos beneath the cheery facade. He presents the days of his struggle and penury as a matter of fact without self pity. His wide reading ( English and Telugu literature), confidence in himself imbibed by his mother, his honesty, and the intellectual company he kept sailed him through his life. We get an excellent ringside view of the intellectual life of those days when Ramana made friends and partnered with great writers, movie actors, directors, artists, musicians, and journalists. It is great fun to read the anecdotes about his humbling encounters with great people and his sharp and jovial repartees with his friends. You don't find malice or dishonesty, even in adversity, in any of the characters you encounter in the book. Though the book is Raman's memoir, most of the book is about his close friend Bapu.

Enjoyed this witty narration by the legendary Mullapudi garu. He has introduced many new Telugu words in the book, but the one that stuck with me is 'vindobasthu' (like 'bandobasthu') and I plan to use it in my daily conversations :) One review for which I went 'what?! why?' is that Mullapudi garu didn't like 'Appu chesi pappu koodu', one of my all time favorites. Will be reading his other books in this series ('inkoti kommachi' and 'mukkoti kommachi') and 'budugu' hopefully soon.

A different autobiography. A journey of a common man from semi urban/rural environment to an urban jungle. The entry into the book is sufficient for the author to drag you upto the last page. We'll go through various wonderful life lessons under the cover of humour and incident. The author is an epitome of colloquial telugu language with fine tuned humour.

not a must read as many say. it's more informative than entertaining. you get to know lot of books and authors. If author had not been jumping from one point to another on time line, just to match the content with the title, could have been less confusing but more boring.
kind of a gossip book on Tollywood and Telugu media of the past.
writing style is similar to budugu. I am sure I will attach his name to annoyance if I read one more book of his with same style.
