Monster Stalker #1

Honeysuckles

Rate this book
I’m a monster DNA experiment and she’s everything my beasts want.

I escape the hell that tortured me for months.
I’m turned into something so dangerous and brutal; I don’t recognize myself.
And when I feel a pull in my chest, I follow it not understanding why.
I see her and possession takes over.
Her beauty is addiction.
And her smell?
God…her scent….mmm…
It drives me insane.
A thing like me doesn’t stand a chance with a woman like her.
I am obsessed. I can’t stay away.
I stalk her.
I kill for her.
I take her.
I mark my territory.
I protect her from everyone and everything.
Except me.
She’s mine.
Whether she likes it or not.

And all my beasts agree.

January Rayne is a pseudonym I decided to use because it sounds better than my given name. I’m a lover of all romance and write in the genres I love most because why limit myself? I want to write anything and everything, from badass men and women to characters who want to rip each other’s clothes off. I plan to ‘take it all’ like the good little girl I am.

Mmmmmokay. If I rate this book 5 stars it would mean I'm demented. 🤔 But if I rate it 1 star it would be me lying about being clinically sane. 🙂 And I can't quite allow that, can I? I guess I'll have to settle for neutral 3 stars though this rating is too bland to be able to reflect how I really feel about the story.

Imagine, I am you are barely 10 pages in, you're seeing this —

Glasses and Ponytail cover their ears but Milky-Eye only cringes, continuing to drag the scalpel down my cock until it’s nearly split in two.

and MY YOUR BEST BET IS that I you go on reading the book and end up enjoying the fuck outta it? 🙂

I shake my head, wanting my vision to stop playing tricks on me when my cock fuses itself back together, lengthens to become bigger, the width larger, and suckers appear along the shaft.

Oh please. 🙂
The imagery this book provided me with is gonna be stuck in my mind forever now, thank you very much. 🙂

I refuse to believe this book could have been written by anyone who's not demented at their best and deranged at worst. I literally couldn't catch a break while reading it. It was so mind numbingly unhinged. A 5-second reprieve would have been nice because I STILL CAN'T BREATHE, my lungs are filled with laughter, howling and screeching. The line between funny and nasty blurs so badly in this book I can't even tell if I was rolling on the floor because I genuinely thought this book was funny or it was mostly a defense mechanism of my psyche trynna protect itself from being torn down brick by brick.

I'm not even sure whether the author taunted us with that 'weeping pussy' 💀 author's dedication (quote: To your pussy, with how she will weep for me when you read this) or she was being deadly serious. I'll have trouble sleeping tonight that's how much I need to know.

To be honest, just thinking of what are the chances that some readers genuinely came here for dark romance smut and somehow ended up enjoying smut specifically sends me into outer space. ☠️ Hear? Hear that?? Those are the sounds of me wheezing at this thought from Mars. If at any point of this reading experience you felt arousal, kindly seek professional help.

The premise of this book is a total manic dream. Here we have some kind of an establishment that specialises in abducting lonely people on the streets in order to conduct all kinds of scientific experiments on them. Turns out that our hero Creed is what we would normally call a test subject with some minor caveats, such as that test subjects are supposed to be paid volunteers and not victims of human trafficking who are getting their cocks split in half for the sake of science. 🙂

We quickly get to learn that a group of scientists has set out to genetically mutate human species which compels them to inject our hero and a number of other test subjects with many different kinds of DNA.

Here I need to interrupt my retelling of the plot with a little commentary because I simply can't help wondering. So, ahem, does this author, by any chance, happen to be a Libra? I don't believe in horoscopes and astrology but it would make so much sense if this WEREWOLF, DRAGON, VAMPIRE, SNAKE, AND CEPHALOPOD (my god is this a thing now?) hero is a product of a Libra's feverish imagination inner workings. 🙂

I approve though why even waste your time deciding between your basic werewolf and dragon or your regular cephalopod lmfao and vampire hero when you could blend, mix, combine and get a Billy Milligan: monster edition. Monster porn lovers, where are you? Pus-pus-pus.

As you might have already guessed, gruesome experiments at the hands of some deranged group of scientists on Creed's body result in him becoming a combo of all the above mentioned creatures. I'm positive about the enormous potential of shifted eyes, fangs, scales, fire breathing, smoke, healing abilities, knot, tentacle traits and the descriptions of the creative ways in which those can be used by a man to make a difference in this genre. In fact, suckles and tentacles opened my eyes to the author's 'weeping pussy' dedication sjsjsj. ☠️ Tentacles, forked tongue and suckles along his shaft? Say no more, this is dripping and weeping material y'all. 💦💦💦 Amen.

Just when I thought this story couldn't get any weirder I realized that, apparently, I THOUGHT WRONG. 🙂🙂🙂 The story gets progressively more bizarre when Creed finally finds his 'mate' or 'beloved' (the term his inner vampire insists on sksksks) but not before he rips his creators' hearts out of their chest cavities so he can leave the institution where he has been tortured and reimagined.

When our heroine Demi enters the picture, the story becomes even more unhinged in the sense that Creed's already not so strong mental hinges go completely loose. 💞💀

Saying that Creed belongs in the psyche ward would be an understatement of the century. And while I normally abhor dark romances that lack subtlety and finesse with all these caricature descriptions of unrealistically over the top stalkerish, obsessive and deranged alpha males that act as if they just entered their acute psychosis phase and need urgent psychiatric treatment, somehow all of it worked for this particular hero, his Frankenstein's monster background and the story.

Occasional violence, nasty and gore details in Creed's POV are laced with too much mental aberration to not provide comic relief. I couldn't help cackling here and there at his antics, the mans is I-N-S-A-N-E.

“Oh, my smart mate protecting herself from the outside world,” I whisper against the glass, my breath fogging it. With my finger, I draw a heart into the condensation. “But it won’t save you from me.” I lick the glass, wishing it was her skin.

Heheheheheeheheheheheheheheh him surreptitiously drawing hearts and licking her window glass while he's busy spying on her is so —

Sorry guys but rereading these quotes still has that strange effect on me. Like... the way he puts it, his phrasing... Peak comedy if you ask me. 💀💀

Creed's this sort of over the top deranged man with loose hinges that would normally make me feel exasperated and a bit squeamish in a 'wtf' way rather than thrilled about him as anti-hero material for a dark romance (I think the majority of dark romance readers are thrill seekers and 'over the top' caricature heroes mostly cause annoyance) but the fact that he's written by someone with a great sense of humor makes for a good darkish comedy with elements of violence. That's actually how I'd have categorised this novel if I put it out on the market.

But back to my favourite test subject, just look at Creed in his candy-bouquet period. Second day of 'courtship', this is him when he kills a guy for slapping Demi's ass and causing her trouble at work:

I loved her face when she saw Daniel’s body. She didn’t seem upset like I’d thought she’d be.
She was impressed.
And I want to keep impressing her.

Not gonna lie the last sentence sorta got me, ain't he a sweet little puppy. 💕💀

Well, apart from stalking Demi and murdering people in cold blood for the benefit of his beloved, his idea of courting also includes but is by no means limited to

Unzipping my pants, I free my semi-hard cock, and piss a steady stream around her yard. My werewolf huffs in approval, wanting to thump its tail— if I had one.
Inhaling, I grin when all I smell is my scent.
It will warn away predators. No one will come near her.

yup, pissing in her yard,

I grab a perfume bottle and untwist the top, then pull the pump out.
Wiping my hand on my pants, I hold my cock again, placing the opening right at my slit. I only need a few drops of my piss. I don’t want it to be overwhelming, but enough to make her smell of me.

ejaculating

My eyes land on the bottle of lotion by her bed. I untwist the top and spit my come inside, place the cap back on, and shake it.
She’ll never know.

into her skincare and perfume lmfao, 😩😩

I stroke myself hard and fast. I bite the pillowcase and the scent of her bursts across my tongue. I can taste her.
I lick the pillow, sucking on the material before moving to a dry spot so I can do it again.

breaking into her house and masturbating on her bed,

“Demi,” I whisper on a whine into the bed, biting the sheet as I rock my hips into her mattress.
The soft friction of the sheets coasts across the suckers lining my shaft causing me to gasp.

or should I say literally fucking her mattress and sheets djdjdjdjdjdjsjsjjsjsjsjs. 😩😩😩

Imagining his fluids all over her house made me both crack a disgusted smile and gag a little but I guess at this point we shall be extremely thankful he doesn't make up his mind to go all the way and doesn't shit all over her house "to warn all predators away". I wouldn't put it past him 💀💀💀

Anyway, if you think that Creed's nasty bodily fluids and suckles are all that there is to Creed and Demi's epic love story then SURPRISE, BITCH.

Eventually our home boy spirals out of control and drugs, rapes, breeds, fucks Demi in her sleep, tampers with her birth control and what not.

How do I explain though? The subject matter aside, the story is written in such an unserious, over the top way that it comes off as something sweet and amusingly nasty rather than gritty and pushing limits. I'd have labeled it as a darkish comedy with elements of violence rather than a full-blooded, authentic dark romance.

The side effect of this novel is that it might damage your brain permanently shall you take it seriously xx

Last but not least, Creed's infinitesimal life wisdom:

Forcing someone to love me won’t be easy but it’s better than being alone.

He chose to be happy. Now the question is what is stopping you? Think about dat

"My Honeysuckles."

Another book recommended by my cliterature FB reading group- I saw last night, read most of the night and finished this morning. The trigger warnings are there for a reason, nothing affects me the more trigger warnings the better. You are warned before you go in, so there really shouldn't be the need for lower negative reviews when you are pre-warned before you start to what to expect.

-Stalking
- Non-consent
- Somnophilia
- Forced Pregnancy
- Mated
- Birth control Tampering
- Sharing Blood
- Drugged FMC
- Murder
- Touch either of them. Especially her
- Dual POV
- Possessive

I absolutely loved the book, a different take on a monster romance. Creed after being kidnapped by a group of scientists, ends up being tortured, injected, and experimented on, Creed gets turned into something where he is barely recognisable as human.

"I'm a dragon, werewolf, snake, kraken and vampire. I've transformed into this physical shape permanently. There is nothing, I can do about it. I was tested on, abused beaten and starved."

Once he escaped- he has the need to find his mate and he won't let anyone or anything stand in his way until she is his. Demi owns a diner and when a stranger arrives, she doesn't know why but she is instantly drawn to him. At the same time, things start occurring around Demi and the diner and she can't explain why.

I was completely drawn and in and I read in just about one sitting (the need of sleep took over) . Creed made me cry more than once- especially when he didn't think he would be loved. Creed may have not done things the right way at times but with very little human in him left, you can't blame him. I will definitely be reading more January Rayne books.

Favourite Quotes:
"I love you with all my insides."

"Maybe I've been reading too many paranormal romance books."

"She's mine. Not yours. You touched her. You die. It's simple."

"I'll show her the stars even if it means dragging her through the darkness of hell."

this book was probably the most batshit crazy thing i've ever read???

like none of the paranormal system makes any sense, the characters are underdeveloped, the love interest literally drugs and assaults and stalks the main character, and she just... lets him??? like bro WHAT 😭 and he goes around literally MURDERING ANYONE who gets too close to her to the point where the whole town is afraid? except once the murders stop they're like "oh well we're glad that's over with" and it looks like the criminal investigation has fizzled off? BRO WAS LITERALLY TEARING HEARTS OUT.

i would've DNF'd this but i was just wondering if it could get any more unhinged.

(yes. it did. she gave birth to an egg and it hatched out a monster baby. no i will not elaborate.)

What does it say about me that this monster romance, all the depravity, sexual assault, drugging, stalking, and murder aren't causing the 3 star rating, but instead it's the fact that the characters and story aren't well fleshed out?!?! Definitely something to unpack another day with my therapist...

What a ride this book was!! And dirty as fuck!!!
January Rayne always writes a entertaining tale full of filthy steamy sex scenes and isn't afraid to push your limits! Lets first start with the cover it is amazing!! As soon as she had the cover reveal it went on my tbr must buy. Next came the characters!! I loved Creed so much! The torture he went through at the Institute was heartbreaking and reading his pleas for them to stop hurting him and taking his memories had me seeing red!! Im so glad he killed those fuckers!! But the one memory they couldn't take was the smell of honeysuckles though he can't remember why that's important. After breaking free from Shallow Cove Institute Creed goes on a killing spree as the beasts inside him grow in power he must stay hidden because of his appearance but something keeps pulling him to town and leads him to a little dinner called Demi's where he meets his mate and beloved. Demi is the owner of the town dinner that's been in her family for years and when a new mysterious stranger with cool shiny eyes walks in Demi feels drawn to him and doesn't know why! I loved this couple so much!!!! Demi is a tender hearted and a real sweet heart who's smile and easy going manner just pulls you in and you can't help but fall in love with her! Creed did step over some lines with the stalking and pissing in her perfume and around her house to show she was his and lacing her night tea with Ambien so he could fuck her but when you have wings, fangs, dragon scales and a dick with suckers and tentacles on both sides of your junk its kind of hard to get layed! He's a monster! And a couple of times what little humanity he had left knew what he did was wrong but the predators that inhabited his body knew that she was their mate and beloved and needed to claim her and didn't care. The sex was primal and dirty and both seemed to be enjoying it and even after the truth came out Demi still wanted to be with Creed! The Hell Harvesters are back!! Love all these guys!!! And Demi's best friend Caden is a awesome guy who's loyal and a total ride or die. What a imagination this chic has!!! January Rayne is the only writer that could get me to love a hot guy with tentacles and suckers on his dick!!! Who knew😂 Until next time Luv's💕💋

I don't have any triggers - at least I haven't encountered any yet - so this rating is specifically for the story lacking in many ways. It's a miracle that I pushed through till the end (skimming monstly) because I was bored out of my mind!

The first couple of pages were interesting with the experiment being held out and the different DNA coming into play but after that, it was me forcing myself to continue on in hopes of it getting better... it never did.

Genetically altered multi-monster!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🩵🖤💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☺️😆😎😚🥰

The Hero: Creed Blackstone - After his parents died and left him their fortune, he want out and got drunk one night. On his way home, he was hit over the head and kidnapped. He is now at Shallow Cove Institute and has been for almost as long as he can remember. He was routinely tortured and experimented on in almost every way imaginable, having his bones broken, his skin sliced open, organs removed and put back, his blood drained and had been given all sorts of experimental drugs and concoctions. He didn’t know why, and all he could figure out was that they were trying to create a new life form, but whatever they were trying never seemed to work. He figured he would die there and welcomed death. Until he changed into a monster and escaped.

The Story: Creed has the DNA of a bunch of different species, some paranormal, some not. He has is werewolf, vampire, dragon, kraken and snake. His appearance is transformed, and he feels different, the monsters in his head are his only company. He hides away in a cabin in the woods. He killed the owner of the cabin, and it suits his needs to stay away from people and its to protect himself as well, so he isn’t caught and recaptured. Though something is pulling him, his werewolf calls it a mate, his vampire says beloved.

The heroine: Demi Hawthorne - She owns Demi’s Diner. The diner and the name Demi have both been passed down from the women in her family. She took over the diner when her mother retired and decided to travel. She loves her diner and her life, though is not always happy with her customers, especially Daniel whom she has known since they were kids. He gets drunk more often than not and seems to think he has some sort of claim on her.

Creed is a morally gray character, who stalks Demi, who he knows is his mate from the start. He kills Daniel for touching his mate, and he isn’t the only one. Demi is attracted to Creed after they meet even though she doesn’t really see him that well, since he sits in a dark corner of her diner and wears dark clothes and a hoodie. I like stalker books, so I didn’t mind the stalking, though there were times when Demi knew she had a stalker and was scared, so I didn’t like that too much. Though Creed was trying to show her that she is appreciated.

This book was different with Creed being parts of so many monsters. Though I liked it. He had so many abilities. He could fly because of his dragon, he could move very fast, compel people, and do all the things a vampire can do, he had all the instincts of a wolf, and he had the penis of a kraken (which I’ll admit, I wasn’t fond of). Though all that put together did make for a remarkably interesting main character. I liked the book quite a bit especially because it was so different, and the monster was so original. He was a cool mix of a lot of paranormal characters that I love to read about. I do plan on reading the next book in this series as well, hopefully it is just as good.

This book needs jail.

I truly don’t know how I got as far as I did when the MMC is a Vampire/ Werewolf/ Dragon/ Kraken/ Snake combo who needs a lot of therapy. Truly. You do you, but I wanna go to sleep and pretend that never happened.

Don't even think about this book without checking out the trigger warnings first. This book and its contents are what they claim to be: dark. Even if you're a dark romance connoisseur, don't go into this expecting some casual dark romance story. It. Is. Dark.
That being said of course I'm immediatley intrigued as soon as I see multiple people being disgusted in the reviews.

Plot
The MMC was abducted and used as human-sized lab rat; injected with various and multiple paranormal DNAs and whatnot he's getting tortured. After months he manages to escape but doesn't remember his past life. He only knows the urges of the several beasts inside him and not how to control himself; we get dragons, werewolves, vampires and some other things I forgot. More or less every paranormal creature with mating bonds... so of course he encounters our FMC.

So far not that different from other dark romances I've read. I'd say the main difference is in it's intensity and gore. It's just so much darker than what you're used to from other novels in this genre. Dark Romance has a bunch of unspoken laws and this book doesn't really care about any of them. You don't get morally grey with this, you get straight up black. Where other stories draw the line this one keeps going and there are some horrible things happening to both, the FMC and the MMC.

As many other reviews already stated the MMC ends up stalkingthe FMC (on page) and I get why that's where people draw the line. This isn't within the lines of what could be justified as CNC. Is it disgusting? Yes. However, this genre is all about exploring taboo topics and power dynamics and Honeysuckle it is delivering exactly that.

The Part Where I Digress
It's absolutely understandable to me if you decide to never even touch that book in your life, however I was a bit surprised about just how much negativity other reviwevs showed. The book and author repeatedly warn about the books contents, triggers and their extend before you start getting into it, and yet some poeple decide to proceed reading and bash it afterwards. Sometimes simply DNF'ing and still writing negative, destructive comments instead of voicing their criticism.
All I'm trying to say is that multiple people put a lot of work and effort into that book and I feel like some comments aren't fair to them.

Why I feel like this is important to say: while the topics and relationship discussed within the book are deeply problematic and toxic, the book does not glorify them. If you bother to continue reading you'll see the story progresses in a way that holds the MMC (somewhat) responsible. That does in no way excuse or justify what he's done, but it's not like the books trying to twist its contents into something they're not (e.g. cnc).
I get why people don't like the book or it's content or characters, but imo it's still within what dark romance stands for, and I'm struggling to understand how we can continouosly romanticize stalking, kidnapping, murder or whatever morally grey behaviour floats your boat, but at the same time are so very judgemental about this book. I'm not saying this book shouldn't be critiqued, but the way some reviews are worded triggered my... sense of justice or something like that.

Characters & Tropes
As reader the MMC isn't an easy to like character, but I do think - considering his history - his behaviour is comprehensible. The FMC is pretty naive and the supporting characters don't show a lot of depth, and mostly exist for plot convinience.

You might enjoy this if you like
dual POV
alpha male(s) behaviour
mates
insta love tendencies
cnc (later on)
touch her and die

Rating & Opinion
In the grand scheme of things I rate this 2.5/5 (rounded up). While I can't say if I'll read the sequel at this point I do think that if considered and rated within it's genre this is an alright story. The plot is solid, the characters are consistent, the pacing isn't bad. Someone edited the book and I very much enjoy reading something without multiple spelling/grammar errors per chapter. For this rating I take a lot more than just my personal enjoyment/ liking of the plot into consideration.

⭐️ 4.5/5 — Wait, so you're telling me he's a werewolf-dragon-vampire-snake-kraken hybrid with ALL the anatomy, ALL the superpowers, and hates the entire population except for his fated mate? 💅 Sounds like perfect hubby material to me. I am ready to sign the marriage certificate. 😌💍📝

🌶 4.5/5 — Tentacles dick? Check. Suckers? Check. A KNOT?! Check. 🫠 This man isn’t a monster; he is the ergonomically perfect, custom-built B.O.B. of my dreams. 💀 Is he on Amazon? DROP THE LINK. Asking for… me. I’m asking for me. 📦 💳 😏✌🏻

💭 My Ramblings 💭

(Copy-pasting this for the whole series because the audacity is consistent across the board. 💅)

Let’s be real for a second: "Socially Appropriate" left the chat in Chapter 1. 👋🏻 These books don't just cross lines; they sprint past them, set them on fire, and dance in the ashes. 😌🔥💃 If you have standard human boundaries, you might feel a little uncomfy. Or a lot LOT uncomfy. 🫣

BUT.

If you are a fellow person of culture (read: a horny little degenerate like me 😝) who prefers their romance feral, their MMCs unhinged, and the obsession levels at "I will burn the world down for you, and then some" then pull up a chair, bestie. 🪑👯‍♀️ We are eating good tonight. 🍽️😋😈🖤

⚠️ PUMP THE BRAKES THOUGH! ⚠️
PLEASE. I BEG OF YOU. CHECK THE CW/TW AND THE SPICE & KINK LIST BELOW!

Look, I love the smut, but I love your mental stability more. 🫶🏻🧠✨ Your peace is priority #1. Also? In this economy? Why waste your hard-earned coin 💸 and precious time on a vibe that might make you yack? READ THE LABEL BEFORE YOU EAT THE CANDY. 🫵🏻🤨🍭

❤️‍🔥🖤 CREED'S OBSESSION CORNER ⛓️🧎🏻‍♂️

Quote (Creed):
“I wanted death for so long. Nightmares are the only thing that live in my mind—at least they were. Every time I see you, those nightmares ease. I can’t be without you. No matter how close you are, no matter what you give me, I know it will never be enough. I will never be sated of you. I will always want more.”

💭 Oh, baby. That’s not love, that’s emotional co-dependency and trauma bonding wrapped up in a pretty, muscular package. 🚩🚩🚩
Does he need therapy? Absolutely. 🙂‍↕️
Do I want him to skip therapy and just stalk her forever? Y E S. 😌
I am not sated of this content, either. Give me the existential dread, King! 👑😩

Quote (Creed):
It’s more than an obsession.
If I can’t have her, I’ll die. My life is tethered to her.

💭 Honey, we know. 🤭 In the dark romance genre, this is what we call "Tuesday." 💁‍♀️ It's not "more than an obsession," it's the minimum requirement for a worthy book boyfriend. His life is tethered to her? AMAZING. My life is tethered to reading the next chapter. We are all living on the edge here. 💀📚

🐙🍆 TENTACLES, DP, AND TOTAL DEPRAVITY 🥵💦

Quote (Demi's POV):
I moan, his hands going straight to my belly as he spreads my legs with his knee.
In one hard stroke, his cock fills me.
He slams into me just as his tentacle suctions to my clit while the other slips into my ass. My thighs begin to shake from the stimulation. The way he fucks me in tandem with his tentacle, in and out at the same time. I look down, needing to see him inside me. His cock is purple with red suckers, and goddamn, those are everything a girl could dream about.

💭 THE SHEER MULTITASKING! 🤯 I need to know what kind of training regimen Creed is on to handle this level of anatomical coordination. That's not just sex; that's an advanced math equation! Also, "purple with red suckers"?! Ma'am, that's not a monster, that's a whole aesthetic. 💜❤️✨️ January Rayne deserves an award for this custom configuration. 🏆 We are beyond basic penetration; we are in the realm of triple-threat stimulation. Where is the applause button? 👏👏👏💦

Quotes: ⚠️ Spoilers ⛔️

Their attempts will kill me, and I welcome death.
I want it. I crave it. I wish for it.
-
I want to tie her to me. I want to bind her to me.
Mine to have.
Mine to own.
Mine to fucking claim.
-
I was born in darkness and the only light I’ll ever see again is the one I feel when I’m near her.
-
Everyone needs to know she’s off-limits.
Unzipping my pants, I free my semi-hard cock, and piss a steady stream around her yard. My werewolf huffs in approval, wanting to thump its tail— if I had one.
Inhaling, I grin when all I smell is my scent.
It will warn away predators. No one will come near her.
I zip up, feeling so smug, a purr builds in my chest.
-
I crave to drink from her while I’m fucking her sweet cunt.
-
No one touches my mate but me.
-
“Your body is the light I never dreamed I’d touch.” My tongue shifts, forking at the tips and flicks out, dragging it across her stomach.
-
“You’re probably wondering why I call you Honeysuckles. You remind me of the only memory I have from when I was only a human. A field of honeysuckles. Every time I think about it, it’s happiness. You are happiness. You are the field.”
-
“I’m going to breed you. You’re mine, Demi. You’re mine. You’re fucking mine. No one will take you from me. I own you. You belong to me. I won’t stop until you’re pregnant. Until you are trapped with me. Until you have no choice but to love me. You’re. Fucking. Mine!” I roar, my wings freeing from my back, and they wrap around us.
-
She lifts her head from my shoulder, and I don’t like it.
Lifting my free hand, I cup the back of her head, forcing her to lean on me again.
She giggles.
Oh, that sound…
-
Demi is going to look beautiful pregnant, round with extra weight. Her tits will be bigger, full of milk, and I can’t wait to latch myself onto them to taste the sweet nectar that will nourish my children.
-
Demi is the only person in existence I live for. If it weren’t for her presence, I would have killed myself already for what I’ve become. I don’t know what I am, and I don’t know the correct way to be.
Demi makes that feeling easier to handle.
-
“Do you know what love is?” she asks me. “Can you feel it or is this possession as simple as that?”
I dig my talons into my thighs to stop myself from reaching out. “I love you. I’ve loved you from the moment I laid eyes on you. I knew I’d do anything to have you.”
“How can you tell it’s love you feel, Creed?” Her fingertips reach for my face, tracing my hairy jaw, then up to my pointed ears, brushing the hair on the tips. She explores my face. “Do you know for a fact that you’re capable of love? Here?” Her hand presses over my heart. “On the inside.”
That question makes me explode. Angry, yes, but I’m hurt. This is what heartbreak feels like.
She thinks I’m just a monster.
I cry. My tears break me, and I yell, pressing her hand harder against my beating heart. “I love you with all my insides. All of them! Do you know how much that is? Five beasts and a human. Your love possesses me. I’m the only one possessed.” I let out a breath, “With all my fucking insides,” I growl before letting her go. “All of them,” the statement a defeated hush.
-
She grins, trying to hide her smile as she bites her lip. “Don’t you want to know me more? Find out who you’re bonded to for eternity?”
“I have eternity to know that, but I know you. I know you’re kind, thoughtful, and take way too much cream and sugar in your coffee. You love tea at night but hate tea during the day. You love being warm and cozy. You prefer blankets over hoodies. You’re smart and successful. You’re independent. The owner of a successful diner. You’re beautiful. There might not be much to me, but I’m yours, Demi.”
-
His eyes close as I stroke him there. His entire body trembles and he purrs, stopping all movements so he is still.
“You like that?”
He nods slowly, his chest expanding as he inhales a deep breath. “I love your hands on me. It feels… like a dream. A good dream. One I thought I’d never have.”
-
“I’m sorry I don’t know more. I was turned into this. I don’t have many answers.”
“Hey.” I squeeze his hand in reassurance. “We will find the answers together. We will learn as we go. We’re all safe. We’re all loved. That’s all that matters to me.”
“Fuck,” he grumbles, pushing his knot further into me. “You love me?”
It’s soon, so soon, but I don’t care. I feel it in my soul how much this man means to me. “I do,” I reply. “When you were gone, I felt like a part of my soul was missing.”
“That’s how I felt too. They had to keep me chained with silver to stop me from coming back to you.”
I lean my head against his chest, my mouth parting as he continues his thrusts.
“Knowing you love me is awakening all my beasts again.”
I giggle, turning my head for a kiss, and damn, does he give me his all. He kisses me as if his life depends on it, slow and deep.
“I love you with all my insides.”
-
“You’ll still stalk me, right?”
He drives in a little harder, causing me to whimper. “Nothing could ever stop me from keeping my eyes on you at all times. Nothing.”

Yep, it's officially (almost) time to stop going down these hellholes. This time I went too far.

I'll put the triggering stuff behind a spoiler, because, uh, the dude should be locked up for perpetual eternity. Yes, forever forever.

And that's just the illegal shit he's done. There's more technically legal shit he did that's also not a-okay.

Also, their whole ~connecting memory~ thing is a bit of a plothole, because they're roughly 8 years apart in age. So if Demi was playing outside with friends, I don't think 1. she would have invited him to join and 2. he would have joined her. Compared to the mile-long list of wrongdoings I just mentioned, this is basically nothing.

No, the worst thing is that Yo, fuck that shit.

If you've made it this far, please know I'll try to be better in 2024 and read less books like this :') For now, I'm trying to make it to 100 books read this year because I'm so fucking close and I'll do anything to reach it. So please hang on just a little while longer <3

I HATED this. I genuinely tried to power through, but the story was so, so bad, and the writing was even worse. I quit when the Hell Harvesters showed up because they tipped the scales from painful to unfathomably stupid. Here are my notes while reading, so you can see the process of me falling apart and losing patience. It's long but I was tilted. Spoilers ahead. Also, the later ones are really harsh, but I'm not gonna soften them. This book broke me.

--

"The windows glow from the bright lights in the quaint stores I pass that consist of coffee shops, boutiques, hardware stores, and restaurants."

Bruh what is this sentence.

--

He literally just stole ice cream from a child.

--

I didn't know this book was dual POV. Everything I've ever seen about it has been from Creed's perspective. Also, I'm only a few paragraphs into Demi's POV and she's coming across as someone who acts "badass" but never follows through. You're tough enough to call out sexual harassers and be like "you'll never have me" but not to call the cops and have them banned? Girl, you OWN the place. Kick em out. We'd kick people out of the old convenience store I used to work at for way less.

--

1. She's so qUiRkY.
2. Demi Lovato did not die for this.

--

1. How Demi explains why they don't ban the assaulters is clumsy ass exposition
2. Girl, have some fucking self-respect.

--

Lmaoooo hear that, smokers? Just look traumatized and you can smoke anywhere.

--

You're telling me she lives in a subdivision and doesn't know to close her blinds when she's naked?? I don't like throwing around "too stupid to live" but...

--

"I whisper against the glass, my breath fogging it. With my finger, I draw a heart into the condensation. [...] I lick the glass, wishing it was her skin."

I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is the first part of this book that I've liked.

Edit to add after DNFing: It remained the only part of the book I liked.

--

There's just too much. Mans is bursting with different creatures and it goes from mildly interesting to overwhelmingly cringe so fast that it's giving me back pain.

--

The bathtub scene. 😬😬😬 I'm not appalled at the whole "unknowingly bathing in his ejaculate" thing, but rather at Demi's total lack of awareness.

--

I need Demi to stop talking to herself. It's painfully cringe.

--

Wow, the author sure is sucking these cops' dicks pretty hard considering they've done nothing.

--

"“Let her go, Waylon. Maybe she needs to learn the hard way,” a fireman I don’t know says with a cocky smirk. “Sometimes pretty things love horrible nightmares,” he chuckles, blowing me a kiss."

I am including this entirely because I hate it. The line "sometimes pretty things love horrible nightmares" could have been good, but it's surrounded by cringe and unrealistic behavior. If it were delivered soberly by someone being like "hard truths are still truths" and letting her decide something gruesome for herself, I probably wouldn't mind it. But instead it's a cartoonish delivery by a caricature of a fuckboy.

--

"Seeing Daniel dead would be a gift."

Again, this could be good. But the context and behavior surrounding it, combined with the fact I neither like nor respect Demi, make it cringe.

--

"“I care,” he grinds out, drifting his nails down my forearm. “Only I can happen to you.” He applies more pressure to my skin, and I wince in pain when he breaks skin."

Bruh, don't say skin twice in one sentence. Also stuff is happening in such a weird order in this book.

--

When he left "Only I can happen to you," written in blood at the diner 😬😬😬🤢🤢🤢

Lmaoooooo. When did bruh have the time? Is this an edge lord's wet dream? But alright.

--

"She's not like the other girls" unlocked. Kill me.

--

Where did he even get a gold and emerald ring??

--

Bruh had to read a book to know what Ambien is but knew about cameras and how to set them up to be untraceable??? Okay.

--

The characters in this book are either saints or assholes, no in between. It's WEAK.

--

The cop threatening to misuse his authority to protect his friend is so fucking stupid. He SAW the assault. He could just do something legal about it instead of being gross.

--

FIVE NEW EMPLOYEES??? At a diner that wouldn't ban people for assault just cuz they dropped a few hundred bucks a week??? And were reluctant to close when a BODY was being removed from their parking lot??? How can they possibly afford FIVE NEW EMPLOYEES????

Also this author sucks at names.

--

Sis just stole someone's earrings and didn't even blink. Yeah, they were meant for her, but SHE didn't know that.

--

Tbh the author should've just made Creed able to hear surface-level thoughts or some shit so I don't have to read about people talking out loud to themselves for no reason.

--

Sis is really sermonizing about how kind she is but how being kind sometimes doesn't get you anywhere, blah, blah, blah, but she's doing it after making an unkind comment at a dead man's empty house. Girl. You're not being unkind to get somewhere by being a dick to no one. He's dead. What's he gonna do, haunt you? And you being rude will make him not? Sis, just shut up. And why is she thinking out loud again??? Stooooop. Also, you're ACTIVELY A SUSPECT. Why are you flipping off his house in broad daylight? She has ZERO sense of self-awareness and self-defense.

--

Of course Demi loves "Shivers" by Ed Sheeran.

--

"As if I'm being seduced by a feather." 😬🤢

--

So Creed is really passionate that Demi can't know who/what he is, right? That's why he mixes what should be a lethal dose of Ambien into her tea to knock her out. So... why is he texting her? Letting her see him at the diner/in glimpses at home? Owning up to killing people for her? His actions and beliefs are not consistent and it doesn't come across as conflict, it comes across as the author shoehorning in a kink for her own one-handed typing reasons.

--

This book would be better/scarier if Demi wasn't obsessed with Creed and thinking about having his babies after seeing him twice. It cheapens his deranged behavior because he's operating as though he has to move in secret, but the reader knows he doesn't, so it makes him feel less sinister and more stupid.

--

Also, why did Creed kill Demi's doctor??? It's not like the doc forced Demi to take birth control? Mans was just doing his job. Creed is so freaking stupid.

--

"It isn't like me to sass or be rude" bruh. Why is the author insisting Demi is this pure, sweet soul? All she does is think mean things then be like "oh no I shouldn't." Girl. Again with actions/beliefs not correlating.

--

"I don't yell" okay. I don't yell either but it's not my fucking personality, and I don't need to justify it with a whole paragraph. Also, the pancake batter situation is so boring and weak. Why is she suddenly mean to Caden? He can't get cleaned up cuz he doesn't deserve to? Is she his mom/kindergarten teacher?

I'm getting closer to DNFing, but this book is talked about often so I really wanna see it through. I might take a break though.

--

The cops do be projecting.

--

Old men can't be threats, pass it on. 🙄 The doctor wasn't one, but Demi's insistence that he was harmless based entirely upon his age is so stupid.

--

She TRUSTS that the doctor was a THREAT because he was MURDERED. Girl. GIRL. I can't. She has two brain cells and they're both stupid.

--

Bruh is like "anything she wants or craves, I'll get it for her" during his retrospect on murdering the doctor and I'm baffled because she didn't "want or crave" that innocent medical professional's death just cuz he gave her a birth control prescription.

Also, "she's comfortable with death but alarmed by my texts. What's the difference?" or whatever he said. Bruh.

--

I can't. The men are plotting to assault her and being like "we should have a go at her" and Creed focuses on how "no one faults my mate." Like??? That's your concern??? That makes no sense???

--

"The scratches represent the damage I've done to her but somehow, she remains strong." WHAT. I don't think it's possible for me to overstate how much I hate this.

--

Why is he begging her to keep the booth just theirs? Bruh.

--

Girl you're sitting right beside him close enough to touch his chin, but you can't see his face???

--

I hate Demi.

--

I hate Creed. His complete lack of faith or trust in his supposed partner is beyond unbelievable. She's seen him before (tbf, half-asleep and under the influence) and smiled, so why doesn't he even try to gently get her used to his stupid face? He has no critical thinking skills.

Also, this "flirting" is garbage.

--

Hey, hot take: being pregnant with a man's child doesn't make you automatically in love with him. Does the author know that??

--

Why are they calling him a freak??? They can't see his face??? And he's literally just walking past??? Not for the first time: everyone in this book is either a saint or cattoonishly evil. It's very, very bad writing.

--

"Atrocious acts always happen under the guise of beauty." Fuck off.

--

Caden has sick days? But he's being paid under the table? That doesn't usually come with benefits.

--

Tattoos, fake nails, and contacts make a man a threat. Got it.

I mean, he IS a threat, but that's not why.

--

This assault is entirely unnecessary. What happened to Creed taking care of them?? He's evidently nearby if he's communicating with Demi (unless they suddenly can telepathically communicate, in which case, cringe). If he's not nearby, then he's allowing her to get hurt, and for what??

--

Oh my god. The paragraph after Creed called Demi his mate to her attackers makes me want to stab her. You're actively being assaulted and THAT'S what you're worried about? I hate her.

--

"The orange glow engulfing my attacker is hot, reminding me of fire." WHAT ELSE IS ORANGE AND HOT AND ENGULFING, DEMI?

--

She wishes she could say thank you.

GIRL. He should've prevented it from happening. That assaulter was grinding on you for a full dissociative episode before Creed stepped in. This isn't heroism and he doesn't deserve your thanks. Even if it's a manipulation tactic on his part so she'll feel gratitude (which makes no sense cuz he was JUST fretting about how she can never see his face no matter what), he could've stopped it well before it went this far.

--

Honeysuckles is the worst fucking pet name I've ever heard.

--

Now he's saying it wasn't calculated and he was stalking them but strayed too far away. Bruh you can move faster than humans can SEE. How far away were you? A mile? Pathetic.

--

The bullshit he's murmuring to her while she's unconscious makes me want to throw hands. "I saved you from them but not from me" like get a fucking hobby dude.

--

Demi's mug is stupid and the author couldn't even come up with a joke or pun to put on it to seem clever.

--

He just stirred her drugged tea with a claw he JUST said is covered in blood. He wants to "protect Demi" but doesn't care if she catches a disease? I hate this man.

--

Ambien takes between 30 minutes and 2.5 hours to take effect.

--

Also, how big is his dick? He can fit it in her mouth balls deep without choking her or making her gag when she's in a state unable to manually relax her throat. But he's huge? Okay.

--

"Another half an inch and she would tear." The vagina can stretch to around eight inches wide, depending on one's body. Again, how did he fit it in her mouth??

--

1. She's yelling at him for answers but not looking at her phone to get them. She's not very smart lmao.
2. Are... are we done with the police notifying of her for stuff before the news does?

--

"The Heart Ripper" CRINGE

--

"Only I can happen to you" CRINGE CRINGE CRINGE

I might like that if it weren't in such a cringe context.

--

Also, again with the insistence he owns her and she can never be without him again, and how he doesn't mind if she hates him cuz he'll be there anyway, but he still refuses to show his face? If he's not scared of her rejection/fear/hatred, then the only thing holding him back from showing her his face is the author's boring plot contrivances.

--

Sis is flashing thigh to cops she supposedly likes when she knows her stalker is watching and willing to kill people for interacting with her. I hate Demi.

--

"[You are] the center of all his desires" OKAY LOL we've got a real Will Graham wannabe over here.

--

"We can't file a report for 24 hours"

This author lives under a rock confirmed. That is a myth and has been proven one countless times.

--

Hell's Harvesters???? Lmao I'm done. I can't. This is so, SO bad, and not for the sexual assault reasons everyone's worried about. Those are bad, yeah, but it's fiction. It's safe to explore taboo topics in fiction, even horrible ones, and I'm able to read them without getting upset. But the writing? The storytelling? PAINFULLY cringe and bad and literally unreadable. I'm tapping out.

My second DNF of 2024 and I don't regret walking away.

4⭐️ Dark, Twisted and Unexpectedly Emotional

I toyed with 3⭐️ or 4⭐️, but you know what? I liked this book, so we’re going with 4⭐️

First off, let me just say… this book had so many WTF moments! It’s dark, and yet somehow my heart still squeezed for Creed in all his F’d up glory.

Before anything else, check those TWs! There is a lot going on in this book 😈

Tropes? I’ve got you!

😈 Dark AF
😈 Extremely obsessive possessive MMC
😈 Breeding
😈 PNR, all the monster smut you can imagine (seriously, there were moments even I blushed)
😈 Fated mates
😈 Pregnancy
😈 Knotting
😈 Touch her and literally 💀

My review

I went into this book blind, just read a few reviews, skimmed the blurb and thought let’s go! And wow….

I know I’m not the first to say this, and I definitely won’t be the last, but that one line

“I love you with all my insides.”

God damn it, Creed 😩😭 That wrecked me.

This book had me on an emotional rollercoaster. One minute I’m blushing. The next, I’m like WTFFF!!!! Then, Creed hits you right in the feels with his absolute unwavering devotion to Demi.

And let’s talk about the obsession. Creed doesn’t just love Demi, he watches her, follows her, completely stalks her. His fixation is so intense it’s almost unsettling, yet somehow, in the midst of all the chaos, it just works.

Because let’s be real, he worships her, loves her and adores her. And honestly? What a book.

Yes, this story has dark and heavy moments, but it’s so much more than that. It’s about torture, pain and uncontrollable obsession along with love, devotion and adoration.

This was a good read.

4 stars from me! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Side note: I would absolutely LOVE a spin off series with Hells Harvesters! 😉

I liked this story, but it is definitely not for everyone. It also definitely contained rape, but I felt they tried to sugarcoat it a little. I would describe it as peverted porn and heiniuos crime with a slice of plot. But check the trigger warnings because it gets very dark.

This was weird... there were elements here that didn't just push my envelope ✉, they ripped it to shreds... still, I kept reading cause I just couldn't look 👀 away.

And then the "Labor" scene happened... I felt an odd mix of what the??🤯🤯 and 🙄🙄😏😏
So that's why I couldn't give it 5 ✨

But the story was interesting and gruesome enough that I wouldn't mind seeing how book 2 fares when it comes out.. Does anyone know when that will be??

This book is the 1st book of the Spin off to the other Shallow Cove series which I have not read.
If you want to understand the background to this world and the town, then you should read that other series first.. but to understand the journey and issues here in this book, you could still start here and be just fine.

MC, I have no idea what you and January had me reading.. this book kinda scared the bejeezus out of me🤣

✨𝚊𝚛𝚌 𝚛𝚎𝚟𝚒𝚎𝚠: 𝚑𝚘𝚗𝚎𝚢𝚜𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚕𝚎𝚜 𝚋𝚢 𝙹𝚊𝚗𝚞𝚊𝚛𝚢 𝚁𝚊𝚢𝚗𝚎✨

I'm going to start off by saying this book isn't likely going to be for everyone, but boy did January's imagination take us on a wild ride.

𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: shallow cove dark dimensions
𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: dark paranormal romance
𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬: 256
𝐩𝐨𝐯: dual
𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬:
* fated mates
* touch her & 💀[literally - not just vibes]
* sta|king
* forced 🤰🏼
* birth control tampering
* somnophillia

This gives me fated [obsessed] mates, meets hunting Adeline, meets monster p0rn. If you read the description, authors note and trigger warnings [which as a person who doesn't have triggers nor do I typically read them, I do recommend you do read all three before beforehand], then read this book, you will realize that January was true to her word in that she allowed her imagination to run wild in this book.

Creed was kidnapped and experimented on to create a new hybrid paranormal creature. By the time he escapes the institution he is more beast than man [think 🐉+🧛🏻+🐺+🐍+🦑🍆].

His beast instincts lead him to find his mate, but the tiny shred of humanity left in him makes him realize he can't just snatch and grab and hoard her all to himself like his beasts would like. So he tries to gradually infiltrate her life consciously, while completely imbedding himself in every part of her life behind the scenes.

✨𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙✨

I knew what I was getting into when I read the tropes/triggers and authors note for this book, so nothing that happened surprised me until the last 15-20ish%. That's where January lost me. But let me backtrack a little.

First of all, because this is a fated mates PNR, I anticipated the insta-love/lust/obsession. That said, I think there is still room for romance in fated mates stories, but this one didn't really have romance in my opinion. I personally would have liked to see more of that in this book - it's a shorter book so I think there could have been room for it. Also, although I understand the relevance to the storyline, I didn't love that Creed used "honeysuckles" as a pet name for Demi - that gave me the ick. These were things that were easier for me to overlook than the next two points however.

Second thing, Creed repeatedly drugged Demi, tampered with her birth control, fucked her while she was passed out and got her pregnant all while she still believed she was a virgin, but I knew all of this was going to happen when I started, so that's not what threw me off. What did, is that Demi claimed to be mad when she finally found out about all of this, but it came across as indignant. I understand they're fated mates, but you can still be furious at your mate for that kind of behaviour. She was mad for all of 2 minutes [exaggeration], and only because he took her choice to have a baby. I would have liked a little more emotional depth from Demi, even if it was more battling her love/desire for him and her feelings of anger around what he had done to her.

Finally, January really lost me, when Demi [a human] gave birth to not a part human/part mixed paranormal creature like I anticipated... but an egg. AN EGG. A dragon type egg, but an egg none the less. This is the moment I wanted to throw my kindle. 😂 Here's the thing... January literally said she was letting her imagination run wild. I knew this, and she sure as hell did. I'm sure there are many people that would be fine with this and I never want to yuck someone's yum, but this was a hard nope for me 🙅🏼‍♀️. The book was basically over at this point but the only reason I kept reading after egg-gate was to find out what would hatch out of that egg in the epilogue 2-3 months later.

So, overall, I don't actually know how to rate this book. I don't want to give it a bad:low rating because I didn't like the last 15ish% and because I love January. Also, because she was very honest about what this book would be and she delivered. Also, I recognize that just because it's not for me, doesn't mean that other people won't love it. I never want to yuck other peoples yum.

3.75 ⭐️. I’ve heard several people recommend this series so figured I’d give it a try. While I’m not 100% sure how I feel about it overall I will say January definitely let her imagination run with this!

TLDR: Check triggers, the dialogue is pretty cringe, and I have serious questions if you ship the MMC and the FMC.

It’s not just the TWs that the author warns you about (but those are ALOT) It’s entirely too much for a multitude of reasons involving the MMC. That alone was enough for me to drop this but I read the TWs and kept going for my first time reading a “dark romance”. The lore is all over the place, the random powers and abilities were all over the place, Creed full stop. The writing style wasn’t my favorite (a lot of self inserty “Demi’s a paranormal romance reader so she’s chill” and Creed going on about how she’s not like other girls because of her pink hair) The least charming/intimidating apocalyptic monster police biker gang, and everyone with the strange choice in dialogue. Can’t recommend.
