Identity is Book 1 of a four episode thrill ride from New York Times bestselling author Ted Dekker.

Who am I?

My name is Christy Snow. I'm seventeen and I'm about to die.

I'm buried in a coffin under tons of concrete. No one knows where I am. My heart sounds like a monster with clobber feet, running straight toward me. I'm lying on my back, soaked with sweat from the hair on my head to the soles of my feet. My hands and feet won't stop shaking.

Some will say that I m not really here. Some will say I'm delusional. Some will say that I don t even exist. But who are they? I'm the one buried in a grave.

My name is Christy Snow. I'm seventeen. I'm about to die.

So who are you?

In a return to the kind of storytelling that made Black, Showdown and Three unforgettable, New York Times bestselling author Ted Dekker drags that question into the light with this modern day parable about how we see ourselves.

Humming with intensity and blindsided twists, Eyes Wide Open is raw adrenaline from the first page to the last pure escapism packed with inescapable truth. Not all is as it seems. Or is it? Strap yourself in for the ride of your life. Literally.

Bullet Review:

DNF at 6%.

Strike One: It's by Ted Dekker, whose previous entries didn't inspire me.

Strike Two:

"She pulled on a pair of jeans, slipped into a red blouse, pulled her hair into a ponytail, and forgave herself for avoiding any makeup before heading out.

No one to impress; she was searching for her locket, not a man."

Strike Three:

"She wasn't in the best of shape, maybe even fat if ten pounds too much was the rule of men. And it was; so, yes, she was plain fat and she secretly hated every one of those ten pounds. She was sweating now because of them."

Ten pounds is fat? F@#$ you.

Bye!!

Christy Snow was upset to lose her locket so decided to backtrack where she and Austin had been the night before. She was sure it had fallen off; the chain broken as had happened before. Inside the room of the old abandoned building where they’d been previously, Christy searched – until suddenly she spied the silver chain in a small gap between timber. It was as she reached down to grab it that it happened…

Trapped, alone and in complete darkness – what could she do? But worse was to come…

Identity by Ted Dekker is #1 in a four part series of novellas with the complete set titled Eyes Wide Open. Heart stoppingly tense and fast paced, the adrenalin raced as I made my way to the end of this short story. An interesting and intriguing plot, Identity is worth recommending.

description
"What is it, then, that comprises our deepest selves and gives us worth?"

This is one of those books that I feel I could dissect for days. There is so much here that could be discussed, but I will refrain, and rather urge you to pick up this series.

Discussing self, both of the main characters are introduced with all of their crises hanging out. Christy, a teenage girl with self-image insecurities and feelings of abandonment as she was orphaned, struggles to connect with other kids her age. She feels as though she doesn't have a childhood or a past altogether. Because of this, she puts a false sense of security in a locket necklace, still featuring the display photo that she bought it with.

When she finds herself encased in stone, she could never guess what is to come next. Just when hope and escape seem to be on the horizon, Christy is sucked into a world of deception, confusion, and manipulation, and becomes a victim of a rather nasty antagonist.
"Not knowing who your parents are can mess with your identity. An all too common phenomenon these days, but in reality, most people have no idea who they really are. Do you know who you are, Christy?"

Austin, having a very different upbringing and life altogether, still manages to relate to Christy.
"In every other way he was quite average: average height, average weight, average athleticism. But his mind set him apart."

His mind is his sustenance. A brilliant mind with many promises of a bright future, Austin begins to experience terrible headaches and fears for the worst. On his way to visit the doctor, he receives Christy's desperate voicemail and decides to search for her first. In doing so, he discovers a grim secret and finds himself trapped in a world where there is no exit.

For those of you who enjoy psychological thrillers, and books that make you really reflect on yourself, this is a series you may enjoy. It is well written, creative, and definitely frustrating at times!

Just eight Kindle "pages" into Identity, I had connected with the characters and was anxious to keep reading. Now, after finishing the last page, I'm chomping at the bit for more. If Dekker maintains this pace, his new, four-part Eyes Wide Open may be one of his best novels yet.

-Perplejidad.-

Género. Novela corta.

Wow, I'm the first person to review this on here?

This is Dekker at his finest. Wrongful admission to a psych ward? A sinister plot against patients? People wondering if they might really be nuts? You'll find it all in here, kids. Enjoy.

The plot was suspensful and engaging, if very unbelievable. {The odds of the events occuring in modern day are very low; medical records are fairly thorough, blood tests hard to fake, and the number of doctors involved with any patients medical history (especially ones with the conglomorate of haphazard symptoms he forced onto his characters) make it easy to establish a patient with a phone call or a blood test. There were a lot of misunderstandings about mental disorders and admission processes to a mental hospital as well}.

It was very hard to bond with the characters, perhaps because of the style of writing. I started with a lot of empathy for Austin, as the super-smart misunderstood boy, but the connection with him was lost as soon as he started acting more like a tough guy/potential love interest. His reactions were not in keeping with his backstory.

The story had waaay too much "telling". It is a huge pet peeve when an author has to "fill me in" on every single bit of a character's past or update me on their tragic inner turmoil every few seconds. I want to see the effects of their past (or missing past) through their actions, and 90% of inner turmoil doesn't need narrated. {Example: don't flashback twenty times to -why- the locket is so important. Give the couple sentances on where she got it/what it is, and let her -actions- and desperation to get it back clue us in to the importance she places on it and what it signifies. Telling the reader not only slows down the book, but it actually ruins the symbolism).

Following along those lines, most of the writing was telling vs. showing, even though the "showing" parts were quite well done. Any story needs a little exposition, but a suspense story should move very quickly and not be dragged down by explanations or heavy descriptions. Because of this, some sloppy grammar choices, and poor transitions, it seemed a little unfinished, like a draft vs. a finished copy.

It did pick up pace and finally find itself in the final few pages, mostly do to the plot starting to move, which did leave me wanting to know what happened next. However, I almost didn't read past page two, and found most of the book section fairly boring.

Identity is a quick read, part one of a novel called Eyes Wide Open. The idea is to release the book in four parts, Identity (Released Dec 26th on Amazon. Part II is "Mirrors" released 12/31, "Unseen" to be released 01/7/12, and "Seer" to be released 01/14/2012.

There is some speculation that "Eyes Wide Open" will be a series called "The Outlaw Chronicles".

As for "Identity", the story begins with Austin and Christy, two young people in something of a semi-romantic relationship. Austin and Christy have been breaking into a store room attached to an old hospital. Christy returns the storeroom to look for a lost locket when she is victim of an accident and goes missing. Austin gets a message from Christy, though cut short, on his cellphone and goes looking for her.

What follows leaves the two questioning their identities and struggling to get out.

It's hard to rate something clearly not meant to be a full novel or even a novella. The plot does not fully resolve or even resolve enough to be a stand-alone novel independent of more material. So if that bothers you, you may want to skip this one.

However, one of Ted Dekker's attributes is his style and pacing gets you sucked in and you buzz through the book pretty quickly. While this is no action story, it keeps you interested and guessing and most importantly...wanting more.

Ted Dekker is at it again -- this time in a "tv episode inspired" foray into shorter, faster-released stories that make up one book.

He's created a world for us to jump into again, in typical Dekker form, and he's done it in shorter time than ever before!

This time, he's introduced us to two orphans, Christy and Austin, and their intruiging relationship... and then thrust us into an almost-horror flick story.

I'll do everyone a favor, especially since this first book is short, and not reveal details (which Dekker also chose to protect in his description of the book, which is a short snippet from Christy's perspective).

Read it. It'll make you want to pick up the other three. :) It's also an excellent little filler between his full-length novels!

Wait? That's it? I know I should look but I thought this was a full book. It's 54pages. It's an exerpt is what it is. It's not even a short story bc it doesn't even finish.

Lame.

I'm re reviewing this to include the entire series. I feel I owe it to people.
Book 1: the storyline was decent. I was excited to see where it was headed.
Book 2: WHERE is this going? It's a nail biter.
Book 3: OMG this is dragging on forever, just tell us already.
Book 4: are you serious. THAT is what it's about? Possibly the most non committal ending ever. I feel so duped. Like its going to be legandary, fantastic. But no wait, let's just make it some vague Biblical ending and not really give any kind of reason for anything.

I'm totally rethinking my thoughts to read more by this author.

I'm not really sure about this one. It was an interesting read but it's like once something really started happening, the book ends. I understand there's 3 other books with this series but still.

A few things...questions/comments I have are:

1. When Austin's doctor office calls him about the results to his MRI scan, why would the doctor either not be able to tell him the results over the phone or give him more/sooner chances of coming to the office? It's like the lady tells him- either you come in right now or have to 2 weeks. Really? I'm sure Austin had already informed the doctor that he was wondering about the results, hence he wanted the results ASAP.

2. I don't know about anyone else but if I were stuck in a small, dark room by myself with a phone that was about to die....I would have called someone right away. Is it just me?

3. When Christy was first talking with the head doc guy, explaining things, why didn't she just ask him to come with her so she could show him? And then get her phone and necklace back before Austin got there. OR she could have gotten her shirt.

4. How would be that difficult to identify who Christy really was? When a patient is first admitted to a mental health place like that, wouldn't they have a picture of the person? Not just a vague description? Or with Alice, hadn't someone else seen her prior to her disappearing besides the admins guy? I just wasn't believing that.

I was not a fan of the ending. Not really all that interested in continuing with this series either.

If a book could be as close as possible to an episode of high octane television, this would be it. Ted Dekker launches a new approach to publishing with four titles released on consequitive Mondays afterwhich a final full version of the book will be released.

So this being only the first of those four installments, it really is only a opening introducation to the story as a whole. That being said, it's a amazing intro at that.

Christy Snow (well that's who she starts the story believing she is - but to say more might ruin the surprise) finds herself desperately searching for a lost locket and inadvertantly stumbles upon a mysterious hospital wing for the mentally ill . . . or is it?

As her very identiy comes into question and that of her close friend Austin, more and more questions are raised. This really is a trust no one business.

Ending with a pretty momentious cliff hanger (we exected nothing less) we are left literally desperately awaiting part 2 mirrow which gladly didn't take long to be delivered.

Loving the premise so far . . ..

Wow! This book sucked me in and wouldn't let me go. Identity started with a killer hook. The protagonist is trapped underground with no way out. Death is inevitable. Things go downhill from there.

This novella is the pilot episode in a series of four that will make up a 'season'. Ted Dekker has drawn on his favourite TV dramas to create a thrilling episodic story.

The set of circumstances that lead the the two main characters ending up in a world of trouble are unlikely yet completely believable. In lesser hands the implementation might not have worked by Dekker shows clearly with this book why he is one of the best.

This is a short snappy read that gets the adrenaline pumping. The characters are developed deeply and quickly so that you really feel or them when the unthinkable happens.

Identity is must-read fiction.

DAMN THAT WAS CRAZY GOOD!
Holly shit seriously, Dekker just did it again, he and his amazing stories. I can't get enough.
Thrilled and fascinating, with only 50 pages.

Great first entry in the Eyes Wide Open Series. Two friends are held against their will inside a psychiatric hospital by a doctor who is hiding something the outside world isn't supposed to see. Although Identity was relatively short, there is enough of a hook there to motivate me to find out what happens in later volumes. Somehow, based on what I've read, I suspect there is much more to the doctor, the two friends, and the hospital than meets the eye.

I NEED MIRRORS RIGHT NOW.
Holy... holy crap. Dekker has done it again. I was in page 8 and I already felt connected with Christy. And now he got me completely into this new book in only 50-something pages. So many questions. So many mysteries.

Listen....this twisty thriller serial had no business being this catchy. By the end of this I was so lost and I don't know what is real or imaginary any more.

. “You live alone and keep to yourself because you’re broken. Your mind is fractured. Even at your best, you suspect that something is wrong, because it is. The only time you feel good is when you’re able to pretend that it is, but deep down you hate everything about yourself. The way you look, the way you feel, the way you think, even the way you sleep, because that time that should be peaceful is full of nightmares.”

Her name is Christy Snow, has no family, had entered the orphan when she was 13. Graduated from High School about 6 weeks ago.
As she was looking for her silver socket, along Saint Matthews Hospital in Boston, she sidetracked into the hospital and had gotten lost. She got mistaken by a girl named Alice.
I liked this book a lot because i can she the image in my head and makes me want to read more.

I got this book as a free kindle read and I have some mixed feelings about this book so I might stretch this up to 3.5 stars. It was definitely entertaining. I thought it was a quick read and a definite page turner. I kept wanting to know what was happening next. And its a cliff hanger being the first of four short books in a series.

Christy and Austin have a semi-romantic relationship and they have been spending time in an old storage room of a hospital. Christy goes in search of a missing locket and finds herself trapped in the psych ward. Austin goes looking for her and ends up trapped too.

And while this story is definitely entertaining, its definitely not plausible. There's to many variables that just don't fit with reality. But, since its fiction, I guess that's allowed. Its an interesting coincidence that both Chrisy and Austin are both orphans, but then there's the question of her trust fund. She had ties to someone or it wouldn't be there. Are there no friends that would miss them? College students usually have friends that would notice if they disappeared. There are other such questions, but I don't want to add spoilers so I shall say no more.

If you like psychological thrillers, then this isn't a bad read. Just be prepared for not finding everything as you think it would be in the real world. I'm definitely iterested in continuing the series.

It's always a hit or miss for me when it comes to Ted Dekker books. Some are riveting while others I have found to be rather boring. And, this one falls into the former. Although I felt at times it dragged on, this was a good book full of mystery and intrigue. A modern illustration about understanding who we are in Christ. It involves shedding the old ways of how we view ourselves and the delusional world we create, and seeing ourselves in a new light, liberating ourselves from the dark world we create. In typical Dekker fashion it is a dark story, a tad bit violent, but very imaginative. Such is the world we often create in our own minds. Nevertheless, I really liked this book and highly recommend it even if you are not a Dekker fan.

It's not often I find great quotes from works of fiction. But, here I found a couple worth quoting:

"You cannot love anything or anyone more than you love yourself and you can't truly love yourself unless you see yourself whole. If you secretly disapprove of any part of yourself, you will secretly hate part of the One who made you."

"Love yourself, as He who made you loves you and has made you whole, without any further blame or fault. See with new eyes. Then you will know just how beautiful your world is now. All of it. Every scar, every bruise, every tear, every joy. Beautiful."

These books were given to me during a book exchange by a friend! Ted Dekker is one of my favorite authors- so I highly enjoy all of his writing automatically!
I’ve been in a bit of a slump for the passed couple of weeks-trudging through the ending of the fellowship of the rings when I decided to pick these up since I only have a week to finish them-

And woah did this start out strong!

I have been completely enthralled in the story-I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, I can hardly wait long enough to finish typing this to pick the next book up!
My only complaint, and the only reason I gave it four stars is because both Austin and Christy are very unlikable and hard to connect to at all-perhaps that was the angle Mr. Dekker was going for? I’m not sure, but they are definitely not my favorite cast of MCS…

Otherwise the writing is Top-Dekker-Tier as always, and I cannot wait to finish this series to re-read his fabulous Circle series!!!

This is my second Ted Dekker read. I read Kiss several years back and really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Identity, the first part of a 4 part series.

What I really like about this book (and the same is true for Kiss) is Dekker really knows how to project the feelings of his characters to the reader. I found it easy to get sucked in to Christy's fear, excitement, and confusion. What I found to be even better is I'm not sure at this point if Christy and her friend, Austin, are really crazy or if they just found themselves in a crazy situation. After reading part 1, I am definitely going to keep reading because I must know!

I really like the cover art also. It is very relevant to the story.

Overall, I found Identity to be very entertaining and I absolutely recommend you read it. Right now, Identity is free at Amazon.

I've always enjoyed Dekker's books for a quick, entertaining, and thought provoking read. This one is the first release in a serial novel ala Stephen King's "The Green Mile." Dekker offered this first installment free to his fans with the hope of enticing them to purchase the remaining three books, to be released over the following three Mondays.

...it worked.

I really enjoyed it. It's fast-paced, intriguing, and appropriately cliff-hanger-ish. I have a lot of questions and I'm looking forward to reading the next installment. Also, I love the fact that the installments are only a week apart because these are one-sitting reads and it would be killer to have to wait for a long time for the next release.

Very good thus far...but then, I've come to expect that from Dekker.

After all of the hype on Facebook, I was excited to start reading this. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed. The writing felt amateur rather than the expertly crafted story I've come to expect from Ted Dekker. As has happened with a few of Dekker's more recent novels, this book made me feel as if Dekker has sold out. The writing feels forced and as if he is pandering to the masses rather than writing for his loyal readers who fell in love with his writing after reading such novels as "Thr3e", "Blink", and the Circle series.
