The battle for Sarajevo: Sentenced to victory

Rate this book

Updating my earlier, premature review, I've finished the book and the 5 stars remain, although there are some strong caveats. To fully appreciate this book you should have a strong understanding of the dynamics of the Wars of Yugoslavia and you should have been to Sarajevo and understand both it's geography and neighborhoods. I fulfill both of these pre-requisites and so fully enjoyed learning of the battles and skirmishes that took place in neighborhoods and hills that I've come to know since the war. The book is strictly from the point of view of an on the ground leader of a unit in the Bosnian Army. The author describes only what he experienced or those close to him experienced and so without the context of the wider war I think a reader would be quite lost. The book ends in a very interesting way. In the last 20 pages the action suddenly and with little explanation, leaves Sarajevo. Described in what almost feels like a magical-realism departure, the author first takes the reader down to Konjic, a town on the main road from Sarajevo to Mostar, describing at length and with incredible suspense the action of a Bosnian Army unit to relieve the Croatian Army's siege of the town. From Konjic, the reader is taken then to the east of Sarajevo and accompanies, again to great suspense, a small band of starving residents of the supposed "safe" enclave of Gorazde, as they trek at night, through snowstorms, 40 kilometers through the Serbian lines to a small town in order to bring back a small amount of flour. This last episode, lasting maybe 10 pages acts as a stand-alone short story and is incredibly dramatic and heart-wrenching. Then, the book just ends, with no epilogue, no "where are they now," no description of how the war and the battles for Sarajevo ended.

I rate this book so high because I think it is a one of a kind personal description of these events that has been translated to English. I understand as I rate this book that the subset of readers who will understand why this book is so special is very small. I will end by saying that if you visit Bosnia and Sarajevo you will likely understand, through seeing it's geography and talking to it's people, why this is really a very special place.
