Jack and Yanni Love Harry Potter connected two things that I love: Old friends and Nerdy Book Love. Since it was written by a former college friend of mine, I really wanted to check it out and then hand it off to my sister-in-law who would enjoy the young adult literary references as much as I do. It was a light and fun read, and I thought of several friends and family members who would totally get into Yani's book obsessions.

This book was completely adorable! I really enjoyed the switching between the two main character's POV, allowing the reader to see and understand their relationship; it provided much needed background information and emotional situation. The characters of this book consist of the classic group of friends, which makes it only too easy to become part of the gang as they make their wild cross country journey. Also, the fact that the main character likes and visits the places of all my favorite books is so relatable, even the twilight parts because I can remember fangirling over that like no other. I am very jealous of all the places our leading lady Yani traveled to, but like they say books take you places so now I guess I can claim to have gone to this places as well, jk. Not only did this book have a great plot and theme and cast, it was written beautifully. It was hilarious and charming and heartfelt. even though I only kind of see the relevance of the candy blog I still really enjoyed reading the commentary each time. Lastly, I would just like to ask the author one question 'does Robbert Patternson know he is in your book?' can you even do that without his permission?

Would I read it again - Yes
Plot - Excellent
Characters - Lovable, fun, full of quirks and very realistic.
Movie Potential - ★★★★★
Ease of reading - Simple, yet very well written. Very enjoyable.

Recommend to - Twilight and Harry Potter fans, fans of romance, fans of sci-fi, fans of blogging and candy. If you like a good romance, or if you just want to go along on Yani’s book tour with her, give it a read.

Jack and Yani love Harry Potter is one of those books that I found completely by accident, but which has turned out to be a new favourite read of mine. It will definitely have a place on my January Blog about the best books I’ve read in 2013.

This is one of those books that I wish I had written. I had me hooked from word one, and I literally only put it down because I was starving and needed to eat. Once I picked it up again, it didn’t get dropped until I was finished. That’s how good this story is. I laughed out loud, felt the anguish and wanted to do some slapping and hugging of my own, throughout the story.

Yani and Jack’s friends remind me of my own when I was a teenager. We would so stupid stuff like ‘the slapping’ scene and then find one of us was going to get into trouble for it later. I love how the relationship between Jack and Yani, however, is such an unspoken secret between everyone. Yani loves Jack and Jack loves Yani. Everyone knows it, but no-one admits it, until Jack’s best friend Nate steps in to take action.

Jack works at a technical support call centre, and reads ‘real’ literature quotes poetry while Yani reads fantasy, science fiction novels and is obsessed with Harry Potter and Twilight. Sadly, this is the only obstacle between them. Together they write a blog about candy bars, which really reflect their feelings at the time of writing. I think the best part about this book, is the way that it combines Jack’s serious reading list, with Yani’s whimsical one. She’s just turned thirty, but she’s still a big kid and she likes that. But she also knows that her friends, and especially Jack, don’t understand that side of her.

By the time Jack throws her a surprise birthday party, Yani can’t take much more of the missed moments between her and Jack. She believes that he doesn’t feel anything for her, so she leaves a note pinned to his door, to say that she’s gone off on a book tour, to visit all the places where her favourite books and films took place…oh, and that she hopes it will help her stop being in love with him. Which is exactly how he finds out how she feels. She begins at Forks and makes her way around the places she’s so longed to go.

Meanwhile, Jack is depressed about her note, her escape and the ‘cowardly’ way she told him she loved him. Until his best friend Nate comes to the rescue. He shows up and demands that, as friends, they all go on a road trip to find Yani, so that Jack can profess his love for her. Jack is, at first, unwillingly dragged alone until, the more times they just miss her, the more he realises that he can’t be without her.

Some very interesting characters make appearances on their journey and for the Twi-hard and Hogwartians out there, they will absolutely love Yani’s and Jack’s venture into the Comic Con. It’s worth reading the whole book just to get to that part ;)

What really makes me love this book, is not only the utter romance of Jack going everywhere he thinks Yani will go, in order to find her and profess his love, not only the best friend bromance between Jack and Nate that makes Nate such a good friend to suggest the road trip, but the fact that everyone of the characters begins to understand Yani better through the trip.

With only one friend of the group married, with a baby, the wife Kelly has to stay at home with the baby, Hannah, so her two best friends stay with her too, and two boys, who can’t get the time off work. In their own way, they take the same road trip as Yani and Jack do, separated from their friends by miles, but coming closer with each day the road trip goes on. They all realise, Jack’s friends on the road trip and Kelly and her friends at home, that they’re never really been fair to Yani. They’ve treated her fantasy book and movie obsession like something they had to suffer, not realising how much she has to hide her true feelings and joys to keep them happy. The girls decide to take the road trip too, watching all Twilight movies and five of the Harry Potter films that they refused to let Yani make them sit through.

Meanwhile, on the road trip, Nate’s come up with the brilliant idea of the whole gang listening to the audio books of the Twilight and Harry Potter series. To their own surprise, each and every one of them finds themselves sucked into the stories and realising why Yani loves them so much. That still doesn’t help them when they come to the Comic Con, though, and have no idea why they have to dress up in Team Jacob t-shirts. Possibly one of the funniest moments in the whole book is when they go into the Comic Con, but it’s also very sweet, that they’re even willing, by this time, to enter such a place in search for their friend, and the love of Jack’s life.

Highly Recommend

I did not win this in a Goodreads giveaway, but I read about it there and thought the idea of a literary favorites road trip sounded like too much fun. So far the score is, Goodreads 2, Noelle 0. I think I need to stick with discriminating before I read because that's working better.

I couldn't figure out why I'm the only person who thinks this is just awful, but then I looked it up and it's independently published. So I'm guessing those 5-star reviews are mainly friends and family who love the author and support her (quite rightly). But I don't know her, and I didn't love this. First of all, I didn't buy Jack and Yani as that friends only couple who never got together. There's always a reason you don't get together, and there wasn't anything compelling here. And, they do each other's laundry, make food, live across the hall, are sexually attracted, drink together, and nothing ever accidentally happened? Sounds like somebody is gay.

Then, we go to Forks, and we eat in the restaurant at the table where Robert sat. Whuh?? It took me literally less than 15 seconds to ascertain that none of the Twilight films were filmed in Forks. So the author wrote about this without doing, apparently, even 15 seconds of research. I am now officially more qualified to write about a road trip to Forks, WA than this writer. And trust me, I am not qualified to write that. I read the Twilight series, watched some of the movies, and other than my 15 seconds of research, that is all.

Then we had TWO road kill funerals, because apparently that's what vegetarians do. I never would have considered the idea of actually being racist against a vegetarian or a vegan, but the ignorant comments in this book made me briefly consider the possibility. I'm pretty sure this was just a reach for the quirky indie road trip movie thing, but that flopped.

And then, Comic Con, where Robert Pattinson was apparently wandering around alone planning pranks on one of his co stars, and none of his slavering insane fans recognized or mobbed him. I didn't do 15 seconds of research on Comic Con, but I bet the author hasn't been there either. Probably didn't read any blogs or accounts of what it is like to visit.

And then there's the blog, which seems like a terrible idea because nobody needs a review of a candy bar that's been around for years. We don't look up reviews on an $0.89 purchase. It's right up there by the checkout so we'll grab it without thinking much about it. I read through each "post," imagining one of those awful looking cheap personal blogs with a light pink background and bold, dark pink font (Jack won't mind, he's gay, remember?). But I looked it up and it actually doesn't look bad. Maybe the author should just stick to blogging.

I would first like to mention that I got this book through Goodreads First Reads.

Jack and Yani Love Harry Potter follows the times and adventures of the two protagonists, Jack and Yani. Yani is a 29-year old woman who has a love for all books, but mostly young adult novels - everything from Harry Potter to Twilight. Jack, on the other hand, does not quite understand her passion for them. Then, the day after her thirtieth birthday, Yani leaves a note for Jack and disappears on her personal "Book Quest." Jack, and friends, attempt to track Yani down at the very real physical locations her fantasy novels are set in. The resulting novel is funny and fast paced. It is a treat for all those readers who want to dive into their novels.

I gave this novel a 4 for a few different reasons. I loved the plot and the pace of the story. Nothing was too drawn out or too fast to be boring. One criticism I do have though is the number of secondary characters. Jack and Yani have a large group of friends and I found it very difficult to remember the names and quirks of each individual. I had to refer to earlier parts of the book for a refresher every now and again, but it did not hinder my reading experience in an extremely significant way.

The dialogue in Jack and Yani Love Harry Potter is funny and reveals a lot about the characters - a trait I find enjoyable in books. I love when authors show rather than tell, and Twomey does that perfectly. I found that I was able to glean personal traits from the characters using just their dialogue and actions rather than having the author tell us that a character is this or that.

This book allowed me to also jump into some of the fandoms that I frequent (Harry Potter and Star Wars to name a few). Yani has the same passion for her fandoms and I could relate to.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable novel, and I have no doubt I may be reading it again someday.

Attention all bookworms and potter nerds! Attention! We interrupt the planned book list to tell you about a new book that we just had to read. It's called Jack and Yani Love Harry Potter! If the title alone isn't enough to get you to read it, let me tell you a bit more about it.

Jack and Yani are the best of friends and avid readers. But Jack loves classic literature while Yani loves books of the Harry Potter, Twilight, Interview with a Vampire variety. The two are also secretly in love with one another, but when Yani believes her feelings to be unrequited, she takes herself on the bookish adventure of a lifetime! She goes to visit the locations of some of her favorite books: Forks and New Orleans. She also visits Harry Potter Land in Orlando and Comic Con in San Diego. Jack chases after her to tell her about how he really feels, but will he be able to get to her in time?

The book is fun and funny with a group of friends that you can't help but wish you were a part of and a bit of *sigh* romance to boot! It's also a super quick read, so please, drop whatever it is your doing/reading, and go pick this one up!

This book is absolutely perfect for anyone who loves to read young adult books, especially if you happen to be older than the young adult target demographic. Yani turns thirty in the book, and all of her friends give her a hard time for liking young adult literature. One of my absolute favorite aspects of the book was how her friends learn to respect the books Yani loves. I know that I've been teased for things I like in the past, so I loved seeing them finally give these books a chance and discover why Yani loves them so much.

This book was a complete disappointment.

I was expecting something like Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, but on a road trip. What I got was the bare-bones of a book that could have been great, but fell short. There were far too many characters to care about any of them, and Yani's friends all seemed like total jerks. I don’t know how they could have lasted ten years outside of high school together. The banter and behavior was very juvenile, not something I imagine a group of 30-somethings doing, as that is my age group. I can’t imagine any of my friends behaving like these kids.

It was obvious the author has never been to any of the places Yani visits, and that was really the only thing I was looking forward to in this book. We spend literally 20 pages with Yani on her road trip. Six of those are wasted on a bad date, that could have happened anywhere, because of poor-to-none setting development. I would have liked to have seen Yani grow as a person on her trip. I would have liked for her to meet other people who feel the way she does and find that her world is so much bigger than the massive group of (14) loser friends she left at home, which somehow none of them appreciate or enjoy any of the things Yani does. I’m sorry, but that’s highly improbable.

I hated all of Yani's friends, especially Jack. I did not want them together, though I admit the romantic moment was well written, probably the best writing in the whole book, sadly.

The romance was completely unbelievable and underwhelming. I can’t for one second believe that Jack cared for Yani other than a source of convenience. She lives across the hall and they do pretty much everything together, even each other’s laundry. It sounds more like a fizzled out marriage than a budding romance. Then he gets enraged when Yani starts to act independent of him. No. Just no. Jack is the last guy I wanted her to be with. She had more chemistry with an actor she shared a couple sentences with at Comic Con than she did with Jack.

I relate to Yani as an introvert and a 30-something who enjoys YA. However there is nothing else to know about Yani. She’s undeveloped as well as the other characters.

Character soup is when you toss a bunch of cardboard sketches into a pile and yatzee them out. That’s what this whole book turned into. We move from Jack and Co (why is there a girl who keeps changing her name and why do I care who she’s dating on this mostly guys road trip?). Then we follow Yani for a couple paragraphs. Then the rest is back and forth with Jack’s entourage and the girlfriends left at home, who have all spent the past ten years overlooking Yani and bullying her for her interests in “geeky” things.

You can tell I’m really irritated by this book. It had so many good reviews and it didn’t deserve any of them. There were typos and clumsy writing. The dialogue was middle-school at best. I just couldn’t get into it. I hoped the characters would be interesting enough, but they were so random and unlikable. I wanted this to be so much more because I read a lot of amazing YA. Seriously, if you thought this book was good or you are interested in this book because, like me you can relate to who Yani's supposed to be, I recommend reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. You’ll realize just how much better YA is compared to this.

I'm so glad I finally got around to reading this book, as I've been wanting to since I read about it on MuggleNet -- yes, I'm THAT nerd. And I absolutely adored it. As a Harry Potter fangirl (not so much a Twilight one), I found myself squealing and giggling and feeling-all-the-feels when reading Jack and Yani. It also made me realize how important it is that my someday-husband loves Harry Potter. Serioiusly. It's really important.

Overall I can see how, objectively speaking, this book could be deemed average. And I think that yes, the book wasn't meant to be all that "meaningful" and the writing was certainly clumsy-ish in some places. But what it lacks stylistically, it makes up for in heart. I don't even really know how to fully describe it, other than to say that if you're the type to fangirl -- or fanboy -- over anything, Twomey has written the perfect light read for you.

Random note: Big Carl (the man himself or anything that has to do with him) is more fantastic than I can say in words.

I was very disappointed in this book. As someone who is a fan of many of the books mentioned in this book, I just couldn't relate to the characters. In the end, I really didn't like any of the characters in this story. I was expecting a lot more, and this book did not end up being one of my favorites.

I found this to be a really sweet contemporary read with just enough romance and geekiness. If you're a fan of Harry Potter or Twilight, this is a good read for you as has a lot of references to the fandoms.

I loved this book. The characters were relatable and the storyline was well developed. It is not the fantasy genre but you don't have to be a fan of the genre to enjoy this book. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

Here I was thinking how much better can a book get? A book about a book lover who loves all the books I do. Sadly it fell flat on its face. There's so much potential to make this into an incredible book. What hurt it was the lack of depth in the characters. They never seemed to come alive no matter how hard the author tried. In fact maybe she tried too hard. There was no sparkle and nothing that made me feel anything for Jack or Yani. I really tried because I really wanted to love this story!

Short and sweet

I like thaw this is a group of long time friends. The dynamics of each and of the group is great. Having not one but three couples come from it is special and awesome. The description of the trip, backgrounds and sight-seeing as well as the self discoveries were defined and realistic. I recommend it to anyone who wants a great quick read! Thanks

Cute and funny

As a girl who belongs to a lot of fandoms, I can certainly relate to Yani. This book was super sweet, had tons of cute and humorous moments and zero angst. It was just what I needed to get out of a depression induced book rut.

I really liked this book. Part of it I thought was a little slow in the middle/towards the end. This was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a book to read over the weekend that is light and fun. I also really liked the books obsession story and the Harry Potter theme.

NerdGirl Amber here with my review of Jack and Yani Love Harry Potter by: Mary Twomey

I have to say this book was not exactly what I expected when I read the cover. Just goes to show you the old saying stands true, “Never Judge a book by the cover!” I am glad I took the chance to read this book. It surprised me in more ways than one! This YA love story was a very uplifting and upbeat page turner. I enjoyed every second of reading it. The book had colorful and hilarious characters. It also had an incredible storyline. I enjoyed the journey I took with the characters as I read.

I have to say I was moved by this adorable little love story. It was also very telling about one girls journey to discover herself as well as finding love. I could easily relate to the characters. I believe most everyone could related to one of these unique characters. This book inspired me to be open minded about ones desires. It shed a new light to the appreciation of different genres and of the difference in people.
This book shows how people, no matter how different they are. Can band together and form a friendship that nothing can tear apart. The story of two best friends who are complete opposites and yet are perfect for each other in every way. They stay in Limbo at “the friend” phase until one of them can no longer silence the feelings that are so obviously there! The journey from normal everyday problems to a remarkable journey to confess ones love is just in itself inspiring.
If you enjoy love stories as well as suspense, then you would enjoy this book! If you like funny, and easy to relate to characters then this book is for you. I advise you to read it yourself and be the judge on just how wonderful this story truly is!

What a lovely, fun-filled, clean romantic comedy book! Highly liked the fan aspect of this book but you don't need to be a fan to enjoy reading this. I also liked that this group of characters were in their late 20's to early 30's. Lately a lot of romance books I've read are characters in their late teens to early 20's or to the older spectrum of a group in their late 30's to mid 40's. So having a group of characters in this age bracket was a nice surprise. Great character development and descriptive writing, good story line and a short, but complete, read. Mix in some nerdiness and geeky fandoms and you've got one fun-filled bundle of joy! Recommend for those with the fan geek inside them or those that want to understand their fan geek friend. Those that like a clean, fun, quick romantic read should also enjoy this book.
