“Some people say they don’t care. I actually mean it.”
Mercy Green didn’t become this way overnight. Centuries of monotonous life have left her jaded and detached. Humans weren’t meant to live forever. But then again, she isn’t human. Adam is though, and his purity baffles her. How can he remain unpolluted in a world tarnished by corruption? It doesn’t matter. Her time in Birchwood Creek is coming to an end and she must prepare to relocate. That is, until she inexplicably wakes up in a pool of her own blood. The answer seems simple leave immediately. But when an attempt is made on Adam’s life, a failed murder she inadvertently caused, she feels obligated to stay and protect him.
But then she’s attacked again.
And Adam begins to ask questions.
Victim to an unseen stalker, Mercy’s forced to seek help from Nick, an immortal teenager whose sudden appearance suspiciously coincides with her plunge into chaos. With her structured life unraveling and revelation of her immortality looming, Mercy must accept the she’s being hunted. But why?
The review was originally posted at Library Cat book blog.
“My name is Mercy Green. I have black hair, blue eyes, and a jaded outlook of life. Having lived to see the turn of the century twice tends to do that to a person. I am no superhero. I can’t predict the future or see through walls. My talents don’t include lifting cars off a dying man’s chest or deflecting bullets with my bare hands. The only ability I do possess is my inability to die. I still eat, sleep, and breathe, and although none of this is necessary for sustaining life, I get rather irritable when I have to go without. I bleed, as any decent person would, but the healing process is greatly accelerated.”
At first sight, Mercy Green is ordinary nineteen-years-old girl. She volunteers at Tender Paws, a local animal rescue, and has a secret crash on Adam, an artist, a young man who also works there. But, what other people don’t know is that Mercy is immortal. She was bitten many years ago, and since then, she doesn’t get older. She doesn’t connect with people much, I mean, they all die and she is left there all alone. The only thing that Mercy really cares about are animals. She owns a dog and a cat, both rescued from the shelter. When Adam breaks up with his girlfriend, she (his girlfriend) takes his paintings with her. Adam asks Mercy to help him to bring them back. So they both broke into her house and took the paintings back. Not being able to prove the robbery, Adam’s ex attacks again, this time burning the house, with Adam and Mercy inside. They barely got out of there alive. But was Adam’s ex responsible for the attack, or Mercy has been hunted?
Running away, Mercy meets Nick, another immortal, who lives with two friends of his, also immortals. Mercy has been running away from other immortals her entire life. They are mean and selfish and bad persons. But these guys are something different, a small pack, something that she can call a family.
When Ben, one of the pack, disappears, it’s all clear that someone is after them. Someone hunts immortals. Who, and why?
I really enjoyed the story for Mercy Green. I really liked her as a character. Her conversations with Nick made me laugh. They were like older sister and younger brother. They both come from different centuries and their way of talking is very different, but that is what makes them so unique. I could also see why Mercy loves Adam. He likes the life itself, he believes in humanity, he believes that there is hope for this world. That is something that Mercy lost long time ago, faith and hope. Adam is the only one who can see real Mercy, he trusts her no matter what. It doesn’t matter if she is human or not.
There was a great twist in the story ( I won’t reveal it) when I thought that all this was going to go to a very different direction. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. It left me a little bit disappointed.
Perpetual is not just a story for immortals. It’s a story for life and love and faith and hope. I liked the style of writing and vividly described characters. Overall, it is a book worth for your time.
'm always willing and eager to try a new to me author, book or series particularly when it comes to a paranormal romance that promises to be unique. Happily, I can report that here is one that met my expectations and delivered a satisfying reading experience.
When I say unique, I'm referring to the fact that this one doesn't offer up werewolves, vampires, witches, or fae oh my! No instead, it introduced me to something different- Immortals. The best way I can describe Immortals are former humans who live forever that are reborn with some sort of gift like X-Men.
The story opens with a two hundred year old Immortal, Mercy Green, contemplating the fact that its time for her to move on so no one suspects she's not aging and really doesn't have a background identity. She's done it many times before. In point of fact, Mercy's life is full of ennui after living so long that she had been around the block and every other block more than once. But this time, she has discovered something new and unexpected or rather a someone that makes her linger longer and hesitate to move on. She has run across a rare person who has a pure heart and lives a life seeing beauty. Mercy is drawn to Adam trying to figure out the source of his light.
Poor Adam has just gone through a break up with his girlfriend who cheated on him and stole all his paintings which are the source of his income. Before he succumbs to all the alcohol he drank, he confides in her that he wished that she weren't off limits because she was so much younger than he (not hardly buddy) because he had been attracted to her since he met her.
Adam's admission rattles her, but what really gets her antsy is bumping into another Immortal- a cocky, smart alec who claims that he's just being friendly. Mercy isn't having any of it though. She has avoided other Immortals after a few memorable bad experiences. In fact, her habit is to skip town when she notices one. They look no different than humans, but they smell different to her. Shortly after meeting Nick, Mercy gets attacked in her home while she is asleep. It was like someone was trying to slaughter her. Then an adventure gone bad involving Adam makes running and starting over not an option for the present. And the inexplicable and danger level just escalates from there.
The plot is parts active and parts passive with the majority of the passive in the first half of the book. It has that 'first book in the series' feel because its setting the reader up with the intro to the characters and the Immortals world.
The pacing was slow to get going, but then it varied with the scenes. It raced along at a heart-thumping pace at times. The end was a real page-turner. There is a lot of introspection and internal dialogue on Mercy's part.
It is all told from Mercy's point of view so thank goodness Mercy was an interesting and enjoyable character to me. She frustrated me with her 'bored with the world' Eeyore outlook, but I guess I can understand it a little. Personally, I thought her attitude was more a sign of her issues with trust than living so long especially after I got to know Nick and Emily who were Immortals with a whole different point of view about the world around them. Mercy does end up growing from the beginning to the end of the story because she learns from what those around her have to teach her- no more unemotional Mercy where nothing is new under the sun, but a Mercy tentatively stepping out and willing to give a new perspective a try. Speaking of Nick and Emily, they were a hoot particularly Nick. He was a great foil for Mercy. Oh and Adam- now there is a guy that was perfect romance-material for Mercy even if it took her a while to see him as such. I cracked up at times when Mercy was surprised by the real Adam because she had built up her own assumptions about him. Living as long as she did gave her a sort of arrogance in thinking age gave her perfect discernment into other people's characters. Her shock at his assertiveness was hilarious to me though I'm sure the scene was not written to be humorous. On the flip side, the bad guys were two dimensional. Not that I cared because they were shadowy figures for much of the story. Now when the one who was coming after Mercy was revealed, I just thought the identity of the villain was perversely amusing because it was so over the top in ways (I know- deplorable sense of humor). Don't get me wrong, he was a freaky scary guy when all's said and done.
I do have to give special mention to the dogs and cats that fill this story. They are fun secondary characters in their own rights.
So wrapping it all up, I have to say that I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more from this author. I would recommend this to those who appreciate non-traditional paranormals in their Paranormal Romances.
Admittedly, I wasn’t always this disagreeable. There was a time I was just as energetic and exuberant as any other girl on the cusp of adulthood. Immortality has made me this way. Maybe if I felt there was salvation, or at the very least an end to the suffering, maybe then I wouldn’t feel so hardened, so exhausted, so despondent. But as generations of people blur together, each one more selfish than the last, I no longer hold hope for…well, anything.

So here is the deal. I am reading along thinking this is just an ok book. Until I realize that is actually is pretty darn good. While reading 2 books at once (something I never do) I would find myself wondering back to this one and what the characters were doing. Will Mercy have to leave town as Adam's suspicions grow as well as the increasing interest from the police? Were they any closer to finding who is causing all their troubles?
So yeah, this book was pretty good. Not sure I could say I totally related to Mercy's character. I mean, she is after all several hundred years old and has no compassion for others of her kind or even humans. She has seen too much to know that people are only out for themselves. Throughout time she has learned to block people out and stay hidden. After all, she will eventually have to pull up and head out before anyone starts to question her unaging body.

After many mistakes and numerous flees in the middle of the night, I came to understand three things: my previous life was over, absolutely and completely; I had to move every year or so to avoid suspicion and immortals are nasty, nasty individuals.
****
I did enjoy the relationship between Mercy and Nick. They were hilarious together and their banter was that of 2 siblings squabbling. I love how she kept him at arm’s length at first but soon she slowly realized she needed him more and more as the story progressed. It is a great relationship, although there was nothing romantic at all between them. Of course, not for lack of trying on Nick's part. But even so, I think he knew there never would be and just enjoyed riling Mercy up from time to time.
No, the romance came in the form of Adam. He was the first person that Mercy has ever cared anything for since she was turned. Even though she knows she should leave town before he comes wise to her lifestyle, she can’t. She has this inner need to see he is protected, at all cost. Her feelings for him are strong and in the end it could change everything. Just wait, you’ll see then you will understand.
Great story that was full of mystery and suspense, PERPETUAL, is sure to keep you on your toes and guessing the entire time. And the fact that it is a totally different take on immortality is an added plus. Readers who love supernatural reads will sure enjoy this one and its uniqueness. I know I look forward to more of this series.
At the beginning of this book I thought this was going to be a book that was so-so but not awesome however, as I read on and got more involved in the story I found that it was really good. The author did a good job at building the story up for the revelation and the bad guy. This was a completely original story with immortals that are not vampire and a bad guy that is a blast from the past.
In this story there are four types of immortals. The first type is Geo these are immortals capable of controlling earth elements like storms and such. The second type is Fringe. Fringe immortals are capable of blending in with their surroundings so that they are overlooked unless you already know they are there. The next type of immortal is the Creator. Creators are just like they sound they are the ones who make other immortals. The final type is a Pumper and this is what the main character Mercy is. She was a human that died but when she came back her heart still beats and she still bleeds and she eats and drinks like a human. The other 3 types of immortals do not bleed, eat or drink nor do they have a heartbeat.
Mercy is a loner and doesn’t see many redeeming factors in people so she stays away and does not form relationships. After learning her past throughout the story I can completely see how she came to be this way. Adam is the exception to her rule. He fascinates her because he sees the beauty in humanity and life itself that Mercy is lacking. She sticks around just trying to figure him out. Adam is a painter also. The pictures described in the story sound beautiful. I wish I had one. In the end Mercy has to make a decision as to whether she will stick around Adam for a while longer or should she just move on like she always does never staying longer than a year or so in any one place. The secondary characters in this story were also very interesting and lively. They each had their own personalities that showed through in their actions also.
This story is not just a romance story it is a story of a fight for survival for immortals. They thought they were unable to die but recent discoveries will shake up their beliefs. I can’t wait to see what is in the next installment of this new series.
*I received this book free from the author in return for an honest review.*
So what happens when an immortal actually starts living like a human? Let’s just say it’s quite interesting! And how totally awesome that the main character is a major animal lover! YAY to cool factors! This is a sweet but mystery filled paranormal romance. I really enjoyed trying to figure out who was who
Mercy is complicated. She’s an immortal, yet she is so against being one that she doesn’t even realize her potential powers. She’s kinda anti-social in a way, but that’s cool because she has her animals. And I actually feel pretty bad for her, as she’s been stuck on Adam for forever, and yet he’s had this other girlfriend. And when the girlfriend breaks Adam’s heart and takes off with his paintings, Mercy is willing to help him be a small criminal hahahaha. I do like Mercy’s dialogues. She made me laugh, and made me want to make sure I don’t live forever
There’s plenty of guys to go around, but not all are for romantic purposes. Adam is the romantic piece. I do get Adam’s attractiveness, but sometimes I feel like if they don’t realize you’ve been there all this time, why should it count only when they need. Pfft, who am I to talk about love hahahaha. Nick is another immortal who helps Mercy understand her world and a little more about herself, and that not all immortals are bad, and his relationship with Mercy is awesome!
I really like how they author took some very awesome optimistic ways to look at life and put it in there. You have Mercy who is stuck alive forever, so she has a jaded outlook, where are Nick isn’t as bad, and Adam being human makes life seem so much more vivid and beautiful. This is always a good thing as I am usually told I have a bubbly personality. I also really enjoyed the author’s writing style.
This story has some very fun twists. The mystery of who is hunting the immortals and supernaturals is full of suspense, while the romance side makes it have a softer edge. I am definitely going with my paranormal romance fans will really enjoy this one, as well as some of the urban fantasy fans too. I am hoping this is a series because it had such an interesting take on immortals, and the bad guys *wink wink* and just an all around fun book to read! I say 4.5 ANIMAL LOVING, LIFE FINDING PAWS!
Today's review is on Perpetual by Michaela Debelius
I was actually scheduled to read another two books before beginning this one, but as luck would have it I was instantly hooked and had gotten through 25% of it before I realized it was not the book I was suppose to be reading. It was then that I decided that I just had to keep going, I had to see what was going to happen next.
In the ever growing literally world where it seems that every other book you see is about vampires or werewolves, Perpetual offers something different. Though the main characters are immortal, they don't crave blood or change into an animal at the full moon. Instead they live relatively "normal" lives. And though not superheros, they each have a different trait. Some have extraordinary strength, some can control the elements. Some seem to fade into the scenery, and some are Pumpers.
Mercy Green has been dead a few centuries and has led a pretty solitary life since. Meeting others with her "condition" has taught her to not trust them. They are unpleasant and usually only need help disposing of a body of two. But other immortals are not the only beings she avoids. She also keeps humans at a distance.
Mercy never stays in one place very long and lives a very lonely and recluse life. But things are different in Birchwood Creek. This time there is Adam. A man that she is helplessly in love with but is unable to have. But that doesn't keep her from consoling him when he breaks up with his girlfriend, or from offering her help in getting back what his ex stole from him. His paintings.
Then Mercy meets Nick; another immortal, she finds out that she is a Pumper. Then, after meeting his friends she realizes that not all immortals are what she believed. Some are loving and caring. but that's not the only thing she learns. She also learns that her blood can kill an immortal.
Battling not only Adam's ex; who is out for more than just vengeance, Mercy and her friends are fighting against the notorious Jack the Ripper.
A very welcome change from your average take on immortal beings. I am looking very forward to the next installment.
Mercy Green looks like she’s nineteen, but it’s only because she was when she died and was reborn as an immortal. She’s actually centuries old and has become jaded after seeing the worst the world has to offer. It’s why she prefers working with animals to people. All people except Adam, an artist who works at the same animal shelter Mercy does. Mercy’s drawn to Adam’s innocence and sweet naïveté, which is so unlike her own nature. Yet, things are starting to unravel for Mercy. She’s being stalked, she keeps waking up in pools of her own blood, and when she tries to help Adam retrieve items his nasty ex-girlfriend stole from him it ends up going pear-shaped. When she meets Nick, another immortal in town, she’s forced to work with him and his friends (other immortals), even though it’s against her better judgment. When they realize who they’re up against, it’s going to take all their powers to put a stop to the attacks on immortals.
I liked Mercy right off the bat. Yes, she’s jaded and kind of down on life, but she was turned into an immortal against her will and then left to fend for herself. I think anyone in the same situation may have some trust issues (as well as other issues) after a few centuries of life. I loved how much Mercy was attached to her personal pets as well as the animals she cared for at the shelter. I felt it showed there was still a softer/more human side to Mercy. The relationships, the dialogue, and the characters all felt very real to me. The author has a way of bringing it all to life and creating characters you truly care for. There was also good character development over the course of the story, especially in Mercy as she learned more about herself and immortals in general. The latter half of the book was full of action and suspense, which I felt flowed well due to the foundation set in the first half of the book. ‘Perpetual’ is definitely a different take on immortality and I think it will appeal to fans of mystery, fantasy, and romance.
I wasn't sure what to expect after reading only the first few chapters of this book. I knew that I had found something completely original but I had my doubts I was going to fall in love with it or with the characters. While well written and full of detail, it moved a little slow and honestly, while the premise was something different it seemed to lack something I couldn't quite put my finger on. Excitement or adventure maybe? Or maybe just the fast pace of most YA novels these days, either way, I had a hard time connecting with anyone and even with the story line itself.
I didn't want to give it up on it because even if it wasn't completely engaging it still did have enough umph to it that I wanted to see where the story would go and I am glad that I did because as the pages flew by the story and the writing started to get better and before I knew it I was completely engaged in the storyline.
The author really did create something extraordinary which, can be hard to do in this genre. It is hard to find something not only unique but fun and entertaining as well and while this may have had a slow start it did pick up and start to really flow. As more and more information about who and what Mercy was and the mysterious people out to get her kind evolved I became pretty engrossed in the story and I couldn't read it fast enough.
Mercy, Adam, Ben, Emily and Nick (I think I loved him most!) were all great characters. It was nice to see Mercy's character learn and grow. She may have been a couple of centuries old but when it came to loving and trusting others she had so much to learn and I loved watching her character grow as she learned to let people in and form deep bonds of friendship with them.
I will definitely be picking up the second book in this truly stand out series.
Mercy Green, a two hundred year old immortal keeps her distance from people. She avoids contact with any other immortals. She leads a very lonely life. Her only contact or interaction with people happens when she’s at the Animal Shelter she volunteers at. Adam has worked his way past some of her barriers and she is putting off leaving so she can spend more time with him. She doesn’t want to leave him. She loves him and doesn’t realize it for a while.
Adam, a painter is attracted to Mercy but can’t get past the fact that she’s nineteen and he’s ten years older than her. His interest in her makes him feel like a pedophile. Once he breaks up with his crazy girlfriend he decides to pursue Mercy. They deal with the craziness of his ex who stole all of his paintings and then reported it to the police when they got them back. She isn’t finished though.
When Adam’s ex-girlfriend goes further than they ever imagined in her quest for revenge, Mercy blames herself. If she wouldn’t have talked him into getting the paintings back, none of this would have happened to him.
There are a string of secondary characters in the book that are interesting as well. Nick had me laughing with his sense of humor. Emily seems like she will bring fun into future books and Ben is the serious one.
I really liked the plot to this book. I feel that the author went into way to much description. I feel so much more could’ve happened in this book. It was very slow moving. It took over half the book for me to really get interested in it. I wish it would’ve drawn me in sooner. I like a fast pace book and this just didn’t do that for me until the last few chapters.
Perpetual was a highly enjoyable a read. It is definitely the beginning of a great series. Michaela has set up her story so that it can go in many different directions and let’s face it the characters are immortal so the future is wide open. The story begins with Mercy comforting Adam after a bad break up. It isn’t long after this that Mercy begins to run in the first of a few immortals like herself. She has always tried to evade other immortals because they seem to always cause trouble or want to involve her in some kind of trouble. Nick is the first immortal she encounters in her small town. But, he is not the only one in town and she soon finds her once secluded life turned upside down by new friends, new lover, new powers and new dangers.
I really loved the story. I felt it was quite unique. The idea of just immortals that weren’t a paranormal entity was refreshing. I also loved the development of the love story between Mercy and Adam. You really find yourself rooting for their story to take off. I also loved Nick. He is a great character. He adds so much to the story and really pushes it along in some places. I can’t wait to learn more about him. Overall, this was a wonderful start to what I can see being a successful series. The story and its characters are exciting, fast paced and keep you guessing until the very end. If you like Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance you will want to pick up Perpetual.
The first half (or more) of the book was slow-moving. I forced myself not to skim, though, because I didn’t want to miss any of the back-story since the immortality concept was so unusual. The author does a good job of giving the reader a feel for Mercy’s character, and I liked her interaction with Nick and his friends Emily & Ben. They become entrenched in her life despite her protests, and the end result was a happy little “family” of immortals for eternal loner Mercy. I would have liked Adam’s character to be highlighted a bit more, as I feel that his romance with Mercy was a tiny little sidebar instead of a main part of the plot. That’s a minor complaint, though, and I make it simply because I’m first and foremost a romance fan!
