Nonfiction/Social Studies Grades K-2 Cute pictures of families in different cultures. I do not like that they only state that mommies and daddies are the ones that take care of you, that is Non-inclusive. Although, this book was written ages ago when that did not matter. It matters now. Other than that the book is okay.
This book describes the expression of love in many different ways all across the world. It shows how cultures are very different but, common in the way they show love. The text is very simple but, explanatory. This is a very good book for younger children because it consists of more pictures than words. Instead of painted or drawn illustrations, Ken Heyman uses actual photographs from many different cultures around the world. The photos are great, and they tell a story alone, without the text. The pictures prompt students to have discussions on many different family and cultural traditions. For example, there is a picture of child being bathed in a pail outside in front of everyone. Also, there are pictures of African, Indian, Hispanic families and many more. The author, Ann Morris, uses simple but explicit text to describe love. For example she says, “Mommies and Daddies take care of you for a long time, they give you food and make sure that you are clean and tidy.” As a teacher, I would use this book to educate my students on cultures around the world. I would use it to help them to learn to respect one another’s cultural differences. I would use the photographs in this text to create exposure for my students. Lastly, I would use this book as a starting point to go in depth in a multicultural theme. This book is truly like a journey around the world!
I read this book to myself today. When I first looked at the front cover of the book, I thought it was just about one particular family, which was different my own. Then I started flipping through the pages. As I previewed the book, I noticed different culture illustrations in different places. That's when the book caught my interest. Reading this book showed how each different family showed their children love. Commonly, all families express their love for their loved ones the same exact way. Regardless of your cultural background, you still give and receive love. This book included illustrations all around the world, 28 different locations, inside and outside of the U.S. I will e reading this book to my children to introduce to other cultures.
This books describes what parents do for their children despite cultural differences. Moreover, on each page, there are different pictures of children or family from different cultures and the book includes an index that explains where each picture was taken and describes what is happening in the picture. This book could be used to read aloud and then discuss similarities and differences in families of the children in your classroom, but also of children around the world despite culture.
Fascinating, though somewhat dated photographs and a simple narrative combine to make an interesting picture book for parents and children to thumb through together. Our girls enjoyed guessing where in the world the pictures were taken and we checked our guesses in the index.
