François Charles Mauriac was a French writer and a member of the Académie française. He was awarded the 1952 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the deep spiritual insight and the artistic intensity with which he has in his novels penetrated the drama of human life." Mauriac is acknowledged to be one of the greatest Roman Catholic writers of the 20th century.
Early Mauriac so his style is still developing, but you can still see what he is getting at, which is what makes it powerful and heart-rending. Read in one sleepless night. Well, it did not take the whole night as it is more of a novella, than a full novel. It might have kept me awake even if I was not already. Left me hungry for his later, better works.
Young girl married to a physically repulsive but wealthy hobbledehoy to shore up the family finances, can barely stand to be near him. The ensuing marriage and how it changes the young pair is the gist of the story.
I loved that Hopkins was the one who translated it into English. Knew that it was in good hands!

I can accept, even admire belief, when it is accompanied by a sense of struggle and a dose of doubt. A French Catholic intellectual tradition, stretching from Pascal on down to writers like Mauriac and Bernanos, has precisely this spirit. For example, Mauriac, in this novel, struggles with Christian imagery and teaching that can be disturbing: the challenge to love, really love, the unlovable and, moreover, to recognize and somehow surmount our own ugliness before God. Mauriac also confronts here Nietzsche's onslaught on Christianity's valorization of pity and weakness, found most powerfully in "The Anti-Christ." The task he sets for himself might be more than can be successfully tackled in this small novel, especially since a last chapter, which could almost constitute an independent short story, raises other questions, specifically the ambiguous feelings a caretaker, however saintly and devoted, can feel for an exceedingly difficult patient, a theme that almost seems to take the last section of the novel, at least so I thought, in a new direction. Still, any reader who likes the taste of belief well salted, rather than over sweetened as it so often is, might profitably turn to this novel. Oh yes, a note for non-native readers of French: I found the French difficult and turned in several cases to an English translation. Part of the problem was Mauriac's somewhat unusual syntax, discussed in some detail in the introduction to my volume, but the vocabulary, too, was sometimes a bit of a stretch for me (and indeed for the dictionary I normally uses!)
I actually read this in the English translation, translated as "A Kiss for a Leper." The basic story is of a deformed rich man who is given a beautiful young wife. This wife is repulsed by his body, and they never consummate the marriage. That's it. The psychological depth Mauriac gives to the characters is quite amazing. He's a bit like Doestoevsky in that the character's voices (although it's inner dialogue) become the narrative engine, and a bit like Tolstoy in that the Landes of Bourdeaux become something of a character by mere description. I really like Mauriac.
J’ai beaucoup aimé lire mon premier livre de Mauriac, malheureusement trop court pour moi. Je trouve le sujet et les réflexions qu’il soulève très interessants, notamment sur la conscience de sa propre laideur, la volonté morale d’être une bonne épouse conforme aux codes sociaux, le personnage de Noémi m’a énormément touché. Je me répète mais pour moi, le texte était beaucoup trop court, le récit aurait pu être plus détaillé, notamment sur les sentiments personnels de Noémi... ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Bad news: The book was too short...novella just 137 pages. I could have read it as a novel! Mauriac uses a scalpel to construct his sentences...with "le mot juste".
Good news: This book is not available in an English translation paperback, but wait...you can read it for free on Gutenberg.org! 137 pages... the perfect book to enjoy for an afternoon with tea and cookies. I downloaded the English version to my Kindle...easy-peasy.
Good news: Character development was off the charts! Jean is ugly but rich, Noémie is beautiful and poor. They are going to marry for dark family reasons. I was impressed how Mauriac describes a seemingly loveless marriage. But when you finish the book you realise their marriage had become a deep attachment filled with compassion.
Personal This book is timeless....it feels just like a Jane Austen book. The theme of the book is mutual attraction is the most important thing of a marriage. One who betrays his or her heart will never own true love. It is much more important than money and social position.
Last thoughts: I don’t read many books by Nobel Prize winners….they are just too dense to digest but this book was captivating. I even felt it was better than Jane Austin because Mauriac takes an open and direct look at subjects that Austin sometimes avoids. Mauriac leaves the bedroom door open just enough for the reader to feel that not every book ends in a “happy ever after” weddding in a Cotswold village church! This book was written in 1922 when Mauriac was at the dawn of his career. He won the Nobel Prize 1952 for Literature. His books are so worth your reading time...
Novel about an arranged marriage. The focus lies on atmosphere, written in vigorous prose. I read this in French, and I must confess that for once, it went a bit over my head, and so, didn't resonate. It remembered me of La Porte étroite by Gide.
Excellent book. I’m sorry I waited so long to read an author I’d often heard of and kept meaning to get to.
Maybe the best book to read right after Houllebecq’s Submission. Both writers take Nietzsche’s critique of Christianity seriously but Mauriac is actually a Christian.
Submission is a book written as if the animating truth of Christianity has vanished. A Kiss for the Leper is written as if it has been diminished but is still true.
I’m sympathetic to Houllebecq’s doomerism and can imagine what it’s like living in France amongst the churches and the statues and comparing them to what is produced by Catholicism now but Mauriac is right:
“There are no masters. We are all of us born slaves and we grow into the freedom of the Lord.”
One of Mauriac's earlier works, this short novella already betrays the author's penchant for deft, incisive characterizations, pastoral scenery, and unflinching depictions of psychic and spiritual torment. It is the story of a horribly unhappy arranged marriage between a rich but desperately ugly young man, and a beautiful but naive and simple young woman. With his singular human insight, Mauriac penetrates through the morass of their loathing and self-recrimination to touch at the deep spiritual ties that bind them together in spite of it all.
Intriguing plot (though it’s only possible in some earlier ages, if then). As for the character of Jean P. (cross between Thomas Mann’s Herr Friedmann and Dalibor Cvitan’s Ervin), level of spinelessness is too damn high. The character of Neomi is too sloped towards the ideal and it’s (sadly) making her quite unrealistic .
2.5 stars. A novel steeped in the Catholic cult of suffering, in which people born to endure misery are redeemed only in death, which somehow transforms their personal pain and the resentment they felt for each other on earth into some kind of transcendent preparation for the acceptance of eternal love.
In other words, a load of rubbish.
Note: spoilers ahead What makes it all the more inauthentic is the set-up, in which Mauriac seemingly revels in his sharp, brutal descriptions of the protagonist: a man so hideous, deformed, and unappealing that he is mocked openly in the village, who is foisted off on an attractive young woman in an arranged marriage by a priest (of course) because his family has money. There are some harsh passages here that would be overkill even for Zola, including a cruel description of the wedding night, in which the husband rolls over after consummating the marriage, “more hideous than a worm beside the corpse he had just abandoned.” Yikes. The husband pretends to sleep the rest of the night as an act of mercy on his wife. He later seeks solace in prostitutes, which causes her to resent him even more, even as she takes joy in every moment the vile man is not in her presence.
To this point, Zola would approve of the naturalist themes! But then Mauriac goes astray. Supposedly, this brutal set-up is designed to make the suffering and death of the husband at the end of the novel more meaningful, leading to the wife's preparation for future eternal glory. It doesn’t just ring false as a spiritual epiphany, but also as a literary device: we are supposed to believe this young woman’s entire character and spiritual destiny changes because the man who repulses her more than anyone else has suffered and died. In reality (i.e., in a Zola novel!), the husband’s death would be a cathartic release, and she would be bathed in the liberation of being free of him, with a nice inheritance to boot. A very worldly ending.
That’s the difference between Zola (whom I love) and Mauriac: Zola is more honest in his endings, and so one’s release from suffering often comes through another person’s death, not as a spiritual transformation but as a very earthly escape from a traumatic trap. And in some cases, one can never escape. So one either survives long enough to see the cause of one’s misery planted in the ground, or one dies. Mauriac – like the old medieval priests who wrote stories of violence, debauchery, and vulgarity only to tack on some moral at the end to justify all the luridness that preceded it – seems to use Christian “spiritual revelation” as a deus ex machina to justify all the brutality that came before it. Death becomes not an engine for earthly respite (or release) but for heavenly priming. At least Zola doesn’t try to make human misery into anything more noble than it is. Rather than glorify the suffering, Zola only portrays it. Mauriac uses it as the brutal ornamentation for his morality plays.
Prima carte de la François Mauriac pe care o citesc, însă cu siguranță nu ultima. Deși modul de expunere a frazelor este unul deloc simplu, aș zice chiar că autorul folosește o sintaxă mai complicată, am dus lectura la bun sfârșit și am reușit să savurez această istorie originală.
Jean Péloueyre este un tânăr de 23 ani care provine dintr-o familie înstărită. Deși este urât de îngheață apele este considerat un burlac râvnit. Noémie d’Artiailh este o tânără de 17 ani, de o frumusețe admirabilă, dar săracă. Astfel sub ghidajul preotului din comună cei doi sunt căsătoriți. Însă, viața de cuplu se dovedește a fi un calvar pentru ambii. Noémie nu se poate împăca cu urâțenia soțului, iar Jean care își iubește soția foarte tare suferă și el fiind conștient de propria urâțenie. Ce soluția va găsi Jean pentru a pune punct acestor chinuri? Vor reuși cei doi soți să aibă o familie fericită? Poate dragostea apărea chiar și atunci când simți dezgust față de aspectul fizic al celuilalt?
Un roman cu un fir narativ captivant. Autorul pune accent pe trăirile interne ale lui Jean. Poate dacă aș avea de reproșat ceva ar fi faptul că s-a pus prea puțin accent pe trăirile Noémiei. Acestea sunt deduse din schimbările care se produc cu eroina.
Nu este un roman care vă va produce bucuria de a-l fi citit. Nu veți ajunge la finele lecturii cu zâmbetul pe buze, dar mai degrabă cu inima grea. Istoria prezentată aici descrie aspectele mai puțin plăcute ale vieții, suflete chinuite de o realitate dură aleasă de însuși protagoniști, dar din care se pare că nu există decât o cale de scăpare. Vă las să descoperiți care este acea cale citind romanul.
The writing, so flowing, at times deep and thoughtful, moves the story right down the path you know it's going to go. I loved how the story came almost like full circle in the end. In it's simplicity the story was beautiful, but lacked too much in descriptions of the time period and maybe the characters lacked in very strong emotions, yeah, I think it was overall a little lackluster.
Dicté en à peine deux semaines, « Le Baiser au Lépreux » marque le début d’une série de grands livres de la part de l’auteur, comme « Thérèse Desqueyroux » ou « Le Nœud de Vipère ». Le livre fit tout de suite scandale, et sera l’annonciateur du style mauriacien, mêlant le thème de la bourgeoisie et de la chrétienté. Jean Péloueyre est riche et jouit donc d’un confort matériel et d’une éducation sans faille, mais dame nature lui a ôté un seul privilège qui pourtant, est essentiel : la beauté. Encore, être beau est une chance déjà exceptionnelle. Pour Jean, simplement ne pas être laid aurait déjà été un cadeau de Dieu. Car Jean n’est pas juste laid, il est repoussant. De ce fait, il passe le plus clair de son temps chez lui, les volets fermés, à l’abris des regards moqueurs. Son destin bascule lorsque son père décide de le marier. Il a pitié de sa future femme qu’il admire tant. Belle, jeune, fraîche et innocente, comment lui imposer sa laideur, ses trait repoussant, son corps faible et presque malade ? Du côté de la belle Noémie, comment être une bonne épouse chrétienne tout en devant subir la répugnance physique qu’elle éprouve pour le mari qu’on lui a imposé ? Je ne dirais pas que ma lecture m’a plu de A à Z, car le rythme est plutôt lent et peu de chose ne se passe, mais j’ai été touché par cette tension entre deux être fondamentalement bons dans leur âme, mais que le physique éloigne. Il y a aussi beaucoup de phrases magnifiques et de références discrètes à nombreuses pièces de théâtres ou poèmes. Mauriac n’hésite pas à puiser chez ses paires pour légèrement en modifier les phrases, ajoutant une nouvelle dimension à la formule tout en leur adressant un clin d’œil. Une lecture agréable et instructive.
Well written, but yes, it would have maybe had more meaning during the era in which it came out. This was more of a long short story. This is the second book by Francois Mauriac and I do like the way he writes so will look for a novel of his to tackle next.

Un libro con una prosa veramente meravigliosa, pur avendo una trama un po' banale. In poche giornate pagine Mauriac è riuscito a descrivere in una fantastica maniera l'incoerenza umana: Giovanni è caritatevole e umile, rispetta il padre, preferisce scappare dalla casa perché sa quanto provochi disgusto nella moglie, ma viene visto come un mostro; Noemi crede di essere una fervente credente ma rigetta il marito solo per il suo aspetto fisico, senza vedere la sua profondità morale, scossa nella sua fedeltà dalla sola vista di un uomo carino; Gerolamo usa la sua salute cagionevole per poter comandare il figlio e la nuora.
“Lei scuoteva il capo, non vedeva nulla, salvo che Giovanni moriva per lei: com'era nobile e grande! come lo avrebbe amato se fosse guarito ! Gli renderebbe centuplicata la tenerezza di cui era stata così avara. Come poteva sapere Noemi che se Giovanni Peluèr fosse entrato in convalescenza lei avrebbe già cominciato a staccarsene, e che per farsi amare da lei avrebbe dovuto giungere alla sua ultima ora?”
La religione è vista in tutta la sua debolezza, attuata da persone che non ci credono davvero e che la usano come modo di fuggire dalla realtà e assicurarsi salvezza senza sforzo.

Lo consiglierei? Nonostante fosse il mio primo approccio a Mauriac mi ha fatto appassionare alla sua scrittura in modo tale che le poche pagine volavano, ma a livello di trama il libro è un po' carente. Per cento pagine credo che sia una bella lettura da fare, ma sono conscio del fatto che se non piace la scrittura aulica dell'autore può stancare facilmente.

Avioliitto on hyvin onnetton: Noémi kamppailee sen kanssa, ettei voi olla hyvä vaimo koska tuntee niin suurta vastemielisyyttä miestään kohtaan, kun taas Jean sen kanssa, että tekee selvästi vaimonsa onnettomaksi.
Mauriacia pidetään yhtenä 1900-luvun keskeisimmistä katolilaisista kirjailijoista ja kristillisyydellä on hyvin vahva rooli romaanissa. Le baiser au lépreux est un magnifique roman sur l’impact du physique sur la vie quotidienne. Il introduit Jean, un jeune homme dont les caractéristiques physiques désavantageuses le conduisent vers un mépris total de sa personne. Lorsqu’il se marie avec Noémi, l’une des plus belles jeunes filles du village, son mépris se transforme en une souffrance que rien ne pourrait apaiser. J’ai trouvé ce personnage très attachant, sa douleur est extrêmement bien écrite par Mauriac et l’injustice qu’il subit très émouvante. Cependant, je trouve que le roman laisse un petit peu le lecteur sur sa faim. En effet, j’aurais aimé qu’il se focalise encore plus sur Noémi qui est un personnage très intéressant et qui aurait mérité un développement plus concret. En plus de cela, j’ai trouvé que le roman manquait de relief. En effet, l’intrigue relativement plate a pour effet de diminuer l’impact du roman sur le lecteur. Au final, j’ai trouvé que Le baiser au lépreux était un très beau roman mais qui souffre de son manque de puissance.
A fairy tale placed around the turn of the 19th century, which is a variation on the La Belle et la Bête (1740), but without the magic-realism and with christian-religious morality. This is one of the author's earlier works, one could argue his breakthrough, and owing to its brevity more of a novella than a novel. His later work shows the unique style of the author better and has a better layering of the story.
For me, It's good french fiction but not for the beginner because somewords or some sentences made me confuse. (I'm on delf a1-a2) But it's not a plobrem. For the plot, it's kinda simple for me. But when you started to know about characters feelings, the book will be more interesting. So I recomend this for people on delf b1 et plus ou christian people.
A deep and moving look into an unhappy arranged marriage that, in the end, provides spiritual comfort to both husband and wife. Mauriac never ceases to amaze me with his powerful insights and deeply human characters. Highly, highly recommended.
