Actual rating 4.5/5.
Guess who finally got her OTP.
THIS BITCH DID.
That's right. Finally Kaylee dropped that horrible bastard Nash, who guilted her and baited her and overall made her feel like a horrible human being, and got with the guy who she was meant to be with.
I don't like the fact that Nash continues to be redeemed. He's not a nice person. I don't think he deserves forgiveness, especially when Kaylee still gives everything up for him and he feels the need to call her out on it (YOU FRAMED ME FOR MURDER!!!!)
Anyways, great two books, plus I enjoyed the novella (even if Sophie did feel out of character during it, which Vincent soon fixed upon re-introducing her in Before I Wake.
NOW TO WAIT FOR THE LAST BOOK.

This book is a bind up of the fifth and sixth books in the Soul Screamer series with a novella that falls in between the fifth and sixth book. For clarity I have split this review into three parts.

If I Die (Soul Screamers #5)

Thanks to her mother's sacrifice, Kaylee Cavanaugh has lived most of her life on borrowed time, but now that borrowed time is almost up. Kaylee has only seven days left to prepare for the end. To say goodbye. And yeah, to stop an incubus from preying on her high school. Tick tock...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought it was very well paced and opening it up with saying the main character was going to die in seven days helped keep a sense of excitement throughout the whole book. I think what I really enjoyed about this book however is the shift in the relationships between the characters.

Coming into this book the relationship between Kaylee and Nash is still on rocky ground after his betrayal and his use of the lethal drug "Demon's Breath" in the previous books. I am really glad that Vincent didn't just skate over this topic and set it up where Nash and Kaylee get back together with no problems at all (which I feel like I sometimes see in the young adult genre).

Moving on, if being told you're going to die in a week isn't bad enough Kaylee also has the misfortune of finding out that her math teacher is an incubus who is trying to seduce most of the female student body. And Kaylee, being the do gooder she is, decides to spend her last alive making sure that this incubus is put out of business. To be honest I couldn't really focus that much on this particular story line because hey our main character is supposed to be dying in less that a week. However, I really enjoyed the culmination of the incubus story arc and how the book tied everything together at the end.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Never To Sleep (Soul Screamers #5.5)

Never to Sleep is a novella that takes place about halfway through book five of the Soul Screamers series. The novella focuses on Sophie and an accidental trip into the Netherworld. As with the other novellas in this series this novella gives a deeper look into the personality and background of a character, in this case that character being Sophie.

I can't say I enjoyed this novella as much as I enjoyed the other novellas I've read in this series and that's really because of one reason and one reason only: Sophie. Like you would think maybe she'd be a little bit more likeable or maybe some deep personality traits would be revealed and she would have some kind of redeeming quality. But no. At least I didn't really get that sense (like I know her whole struggle about wanting to know what happened to her mom is supposed to make her more likeable but honestly I just can't like her). Coming out of this novella I still dislike Sophie as much as I did in the previous books (and I'm assuming this dislike is probably just gonna continue on for the rest of the series).

Action wise the novella was pretty good. We got to have (terrifying) adventures in the Netherworld. And Luca, the cute new boy at school, who also just happens to be a necromancer wasn't too bad either.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Before I Wake (Soul Screamers #6)

Dying wasn't easy for Kaylee, but faking life is a whole new kind of struggle. The only good moments are those spent in Tod's arms. But death hasn't stopped her old enemies, and now everyone Kaylee loves is in danger....

I have to admit I didn't enjoy this one as much as the other books in Vincent's Soul Screamers series. A lot of the book focuses on Kaylee learning to adapt to her newly undead status and while this was interesting it led to a slower paced book. I did enjoy seeing the relationship between Tod and Kaylee develop in this book however, the pace was a little too fast for my taste I would have liked a slower relationship build up instead of the speedy relationships that are often seen in the young adult genre.

The villains in this book were much slower paced and not present as much compared to previous books in the series. There was a lot of build up to the final reveal and not so much action in the main part of the book. I can only assume this is because Vincent is getting ready for a culmination in the next and final book.

Overall, the book was pretty good there were just moments of lag that really slowed the book down and were hard to get through at times.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I am in love with this series. Rachel Vincent creates characters that are incredibly real (minus the whole, you know... undead stuff). They make mistakes and they regret things. Happily ever after comes at a cost, but no one smiles and forgives the wrong doings as easily as most books. I love Tod, Nash, Kaylee and Sabine. In fact, Kaylee may be my favourite female protagonist ever. Im not looking forward to the devastating emptiness that comes with finishing a series, but I also absolutely need to read 'the final chapter' as Vincent says in the end of this book. Five huge well-earned stars.

I've read the main series before and still love it greatly. The new parts I got to read in this volume were "Never To Sleep" and the short blurb "A Day in the Afterlife of Tod". Sophie being brought into the horror that Kaylee goes through is a good twist, and while I doubt she would handle it as well as she seemed to, it was a good story. The blurb about Tod was cute! I could real a whole series about Tod. Rachel Vincent is a great author, I hope she keeps writing!

I don't think I should read all these back to back. I seem to be getting tired of the world and the characters. Not saying it was a bad book (I thoroughly enjoyed it), but too much of the same characters and the same world really drains me. I'll pick up the last bind-up a little later!

This is a review of the entire series.

The Soul Screamers series is really good. It actually took me a while to pick them up though. I saw them in the backs of a bunch of books I read and was like "Nah, I don't want to read that." I finally picked up the first book from the library and loved it. Seriously, it was awesome. I read the next couple books but then stopped reading them. The fifth book If I Die came out and I was really excited to read it. In the process, I realized that I had skipped the previous book. Whoops. I still haven't read it, but the plot wasn't confusing because I hadn't. I eventually figured out what I missed. The last three books (If I Die, Before I Wake, and With All My Soul) are infinitely better than the first three (remember, haven't read the fourth). I struggled through the first three, but plowed right through the rest. I've lost count how many times I've read Before I Wake, it's that good. Maybe it has something to do with the love interest...

The main character is named Kaylee. She's pretty cool. Kaylee is a bean sidhe, AKA banshee. She screams when someone dies, which makes for some awkward situations. And as each book continues, she grows stronger, better, and more awesomesauce. If you compare her in book one to book seven, she's grown up tremendously. Kaylee has to deal with lots of things normal teenagers don't. For example, hellions, vengeful hellions, death (lots of it), and heartbreak. She keeps going strong despite all of that. Kaylee shows again and again that she'd do and give up anything for the people she loves. Her loyalty is fierce, and seems to have no end. She doesn't give up on people, no matter how deep they dig their holes. And trust me, some of those holes are pretty deep. While she holds grudges and sometimes acts petty, that's normal. Nothing bad sticks with her for long. She has learned to make the best of many situations. Many characters are introduced as the series goes on. You meet Nash, who has his eye on Kaylee from page one. Nash is also a bean sidhe. Then there's Sophie, Kaylee's younger cousin who's more than a tad mean, but truly does come around (love really does have the power to change people). There's Tod, Nash's older brother, who not so secretly has a crush on Kaylee (this creates problems later). Tod also happens to be dead. His sense of humor is hilarious though. Tod is easily my favorite character in the books. There's Sabine, Nash's ex-girlfriend who hates Kaylee with a vengeance. Sabine is a mara, she feeds of nightmares. She also happens to know your deepest fears. You don't want her as an enemy to say the least. Kaylee's best friend Emma is awesome! She is the best human out there, and isn't afraid to admit when she's messed up. There's also Luca. Luca joins the books in Never to Sleep, the novella between If I Die and Before I Wake. Luca is pretty cool. He's a necromancer and is able to put up with Sophie. There are some pretty bad villains too. Avari, the hellion of greed, is introduced in book one. He is the main antagonist. There are lots of bad guys, but every one of them ties back to Avari and his evil schemes that are revealed in the final books. Mr. Beck is Kaylee's new math teacher in If I Die. Just a warning, never trust a math teacher. Turns out, they're just as evil and unforgiving as the subject (at least in fiction).

The Soul Screamer novels are filled to the brink with humor. I find myself laughing at everything Tod and Sabine say. For example, in With All My Soul, Sabine says something along the lines of "Here's what we've learned today. Nash and Kaylee are like the rocks cavemen used. Bang them together, and you get sparks." Easily one of the funniest lines in the book. The plot in these books is well done. The first few don't really seem to connect, but as you delve farther into the series, it becomes apparent just what is going on. So far, there also happen to be three volumes. Volume one has the prequel My Soul to Lose, My Soul to Take, and My Soul to Save. Volume two has the prequel Reaper, My Soul to Keep, and My Soul to Steal. Volume three contains If I Die, Never to Sleep (novella), and Before I Wake. I love these books so much and look forward to rereading them for years to come. The ending is a bit of a tearjerker, but don't worry too much. You won't regret reading these books. They get a full five stars!

If I Die, #5 (5/5)

Thus far, my favorite Soul Screamer novel. The emotional turmoil alone puts this novel far ahead of the others. Kaylee, her family, and friends are dealing with the idea that in six days she will be dead. A death which this is no coming back from. Despite the pleas of her father, Tod informs them that you only get one extension and since Kaylee is already living on borrowed time (her mother's) there is nothing that can be done.

Her father refuses to accept this fact and is bound and determined to find a solution, despite Kaylee's pleas that he not do so. I both commended and praised at him for this. Yes, he is attempting to save his daughter's life, but when a Reaper says it is helpless, spend that time with your daughter - not finding a mythical solution that doesn't exist.

Instead of going quietly into the night, in true Kaylee fashion she is determined to stop the incubus that is preying on the girls of her high school, especially after he sets his sights on Emma. In If I Die, you really come to respect Kaylee, if you didn't already. She knows for a fact that she will die in six days and she is more worried about her family than herself and all the things she will never do.

Rachel did an amazing job of creating both a hopeless and hopeful atmosphere throughout the novel. I love the climax of the novel and how everything comes about full circle. Kaylee obviously survives in some form (there are more novels, so this isn't a huge shocker), but those last few chapters are beyond intense. The kind of intensity where the rest of the world fades away - your house could be on fire and you'd have zero idea.

Never to Sleep, #5.5 (3/5)

You know, I'm just not a fan of Sophie. I don't think I ever will be. I thought it was interesting to see Sophie's first encounter with the Netherworld, but I just find her character beyond frustrating. And really, that might have been why I liked Never to Sleep less than I've enjoyed the other two novellas, My Soul to Lose and Reaper.

I do think Sophie's reaction to the Netherworld is a rather interesting one. I envisioned her huddled in a corner and freaking out. Instead, she takes the initiative to figure out how to get herself and Leon, a new addition to the series, out.

Much like the other two novellas, Rachel gives us a deeper peak into the world of the Soul Screamers and we learn some interesting new tidbits. It's just . . . ugh, Sophie.

Before I Wake, #6 (5/5)

Kaylee and Tod forever! Okay, now that I got that out of the way . . . I'll admit that I enjoyed Nash during My Soul to Take and My Soul to Save, but after the events of My Soul to Keep, much like Kaylee, I couldn't look at him in the same light. My feelings for him were forced and in a weakened state.

I like that every once in a while, Rachel will switch the main focus from paranormal to personal. Kaylee is struggling with being dead, knowing that she has to play being alive while slowly losing her humanity the wee hours of the morning. While her family and friends try to help, she really only feels "alive" when she is with Tod.

Aside from the fact that knowing there is only a novel and a half left, Before I Wake is when things really come to head. Despite the fact that she is dead and her soul is out of his reach, Avari isn't quite through with Kaylee and is now even more determined to acquire her soul - through any means necessary.

Avari has gotten quite crafty and has certainly pulled his resources since we last saw him and the stakes have truly risen to a level of intensity that I cannot even begin to describe. At the same time, when things begin to really take a turn, this misfit group really comes together to fight for what is important - survival.

The ending of Before I Wake is mind blowing and you know that Avari is in trouble. I'm desperate to pick up Soul Screamers Volume 4, but I'm not ready to let this series go. Between the actual novels and the novellas, this has quickly become a favorite series of mine. I know I'm going to have to bite the bullet, I have to know how this all ends, but I'm scared, excited, nervous, and eager all at once.

This has to be my favorite books from the series!! I know it's a huge gap from the previous rating I gave the previous books to suddenly 5 stars but this is SO good and addictive I won't lie to you about how I've become very obsessed. I lost control of my feelings and truly had a few breakdown myself. I can't handle all the emotions at once. I won't apologize either if my review for the series has been quite a rambling or out of order I just have to get all of my thoughts out there. Where do I even start? This is all too much.

"You hate feeling useless, but you like that feeling useless makes you feel human?"

After I finished reading the book, obviously I just stared at the spaces and when someone starts a conversation with me, I went thinking back to the story, replaying all of what I just read. It's very fast-paced, well-written book and intelligible follow-up in the beginning of If I Die, unless you've never actually read the first few books in the series. More secrets and very important information that surfaced none of the characters are positioned to have the right answers to the very big questions asked among themselves.

As a whole, the book dived into more dangerous dilemma none of them are truly prepared for but always been cautious to the hellions and reapers. Moreover, it could be anyone that they would not easily recognize their real enemies. This book basically will be the death of me, in short. The humorous and all the things that I should be afraid of is all in this book.

The characters that were killed off...one of them was my favorite. He's probably one of the optimistic person in the room that's capable of humoring the situation besides Tod. I feel the hurt that Kaylee's been through and I understand what she has lost, suddenly slipped away from her life. Kaylee's character development has been truly remarkable even after facing the very last moment that's inevitable, she doesn't give up without a very hard fight to those who deserve justice. Her strength, I admire here has been recharged especially in Before I Wake. Absolutely, the book has captivated, absorbed me into the world of the unknown and Kaylee owns that, together with her family and friends.

Even the gruesome scenes that I should be disgusted with such as blood and grotesque descriptions of the dead bodies which I won't be able to imagine for long, I've read them, every single pages of them. I'm so intrigued by the untraceable, mysterious process of the hellions getting aboard the human plane and everything that wasn't possible before. There are time I think it's so torturous, it's messed up but very fitting as the story goes with all the situation. The sequence order of the scenes are organized enough for the all the weaving lies become quite mysterious and needed to be solved. The fantasy and paranormal is the whole bonus as well as it's labelled for the whole amazing package!

I find it also interesting to know that Sabine and Kaylee are friends. It's very unexpected to say at first but I'm glad everything worked out for both of them as I knew they were. Sabine's direct manner definitely earns my respect even when I think she can be rude at times, but at least she's truly honest in her opinions and thoughts.

I enjoyed every single moment spent that Tod and Kaylee shared. The intensity of their passion, sincere words, and everything in between them has pierced through my heart I love both the way they view their healthy relationship till eternity.

I have no words for how much I would want more readers of the paranormal, fantasy, romance lovers read these books! It's better late than never! I highly recommend readers to read Soul Screamers!

Literally just finishedthis 2 minutes ago. So, I have to start with...

If I Die

I liked this novel as usual but I did want to smack Kaylee from time to time because she ended up becoming pessimistic due to her upcoming 'death'. I felt like she could have handled things better instead of being Ms. Negative and all. Well, I do have to give her credit for coming through towards the end. I think the romance department surprised me quite a bit and for some reason I kinda' swerved in Tod's direction. Nash was self-destructive in more ways than one. I still like him though despite everything.

Never to Sleep

This is the bonus novella included in this omnibus and it is told in Sophie, Kaylee's cousin's, perspective. To be honest I felt like Sophie was such a hypocrite that I really wanted to strangle her from time to time. She was selfish, self-absorbed and just plain shallow. She annoyed me quite a bit that is until Luca entered the picture. I loved the fact that he was introduced in the novella. He defintely has a bigger role in the upcoming novels.

Before I Wake

Lastly, the sixth novel in the Soul Screamers series. Kaylee is now undead and she's trying to adjust to being 'undead-while-still-trying-to-fit-in-with-the-rest-of-the-living'. I seriously wanted to smack her for some reason. She had too much angst and insecurities whatsoever. I get that she's adjusting amd everything but pushing everyone away is just plain annoying. She felt like she didn't belong anywhere but she ends up pushing everyone away anyway. I just didn't see her point. I really wanted to strangle her because of her pessimism and the way she brushes everyone off. Even her dad. Anyway, I loved the love story here and that ending was just. Ugh! I can't even say it without spoiling the entire book! Anyway, can't wait to get my hands on the last novel. :)

Possible Spoilers

With three books in one, it is impossible to try to divide the books down since I read them all without stop. Now the question is why would I do that since this is obviously not my favorite series. Well, I do not know and I have thought about this a lot. Despite being a series full of flaws that nag at me, the story ans writing still has ensnared my attention to make me have to finish. The character's haven't changed much at all, but their positions in the book have which is good and bad. I have been hyping Tod up for a while so I am happy he now has a bigger role in the books. He has conflict, passion, and more emotion than all the other characters out together. The thing is how he got his rise in position us crazy confusing and just written in as though there will be no questions. Also Alec showed such promise with his background in the Neverworld and his experiences but he is put to the background and delegated a tiny role that was just too unfortunate. The redeeming qualities are all due to the ending of Before I Wake and Emma's situation. With one more book to go I just need to see how the author resolves all this.

This is only for Never To Sleep Novella

Review
Sophie never paid attention to what her cousin Kaylee do, she believes that she is in a higher social ladder than her. People get them confused with being sisters rather than cousins because of their last name.

All Sophie wants is to live in her world, soon she learns that there is more to her world than she thinks . . . running into a new guy, she doesn't think anything but just how good looking he is but then things starts to happen.

Luca Tedesco will change Sophie's world forever especially when the two of them end up in the Netherworld at school where Netherworld's worst nightmares lingers.

Can Luca and Sophie survive the Netherworld?

I give this a 5 cat's Tails up, I'm really glad that Rachel decided to do this novella in Sophie's POV, I feel now I understands Sophie's a little bit better even if it took five books to get there

Spoiler ahead:

So I'm not going to actually give this book a rating because I couldn't actually finish it. I hate where this book went. The ending in My Soul to Steal was perfect so I don't know why authors feel the need to continue a series when they've reached a good ending. I use to really like Kaylee and I loved Nash and Kaylee as couple but now it's just been ruined. Tod was a character that grew on me however, I didn't want that cliche love triangle to come into play with Kaylee, Nash and Tod. After Kaylee kissed Tod I just couldn't even bring myself to read another chapter in the book. I'm sad :( I'll recommend the series up until My Soul to Steal but after that I can't. It just went all wrong.

First off, I adddoooorrrreee Tod.
I don't know what changed between volume one and two of these books. I had to force myself to read volume one but I couldn't put down two or three. Evey book is going to have it's flaws-- no author is perfect. But it's been an incredible relief, seeing Rachel's writing progress from volume one.
I was a bit thrown by the second part of this book though. I mean, Sophie is a reading bitch. No way around that. So I didn't see a lot of use in reading her point of view. All it accomplished was a lot of teeth grinding. As I read about her, I thought maybe her situation would put things into perspective for her. Nope. Still an ungrateful, entitled brat.
With all things said, I'm in love with these books.

First of all: WHY did they toss in a novella about Sophie, making the last book of the series a standalone, isntead of making three collection-books? Just... WHY??!

Oh well. My complete befuddlement regarding THAT particular issue aside, let's do this from the beginning, right?
The cover. It's gorgeous! As a matter of fact, all these three (and a half... befuddlement back!) collections are stunning.

Best volume so far.

These stories are quickly becoming my favorites. The roller coaster ride of emotions, constant suspense, and damaged characters make this volume impossible to put down. Even though these stories are about teenagers, adults will get hooked as well. There are some sexual situations, violence, and death which make it inappropriate for younger readers but I definitely recommend this series to everyone else. These books are worth the money! Happy reading my fellow bookworms.

I loved reading Soul Screamers Volume 3. Rachel Vincent can write a compelling story that stays eventful and doesn’t stop. I can’t wait to see how it all comes to an end, though I am sad to see the series finish. It’s not often I find a series that keeps me so enthralled. If you haven’t read the soul screamers series yet, please do. The books are easy to read and quick paced, filled with lots of romance, drama, actions and intrigue.

I really enjoyed all these books. Not going to lie, these were the sort that made me get super frustrated every time I was interrupted from reading them. Book 5 made a needed change with Kaylee's love interest and I enjoyed how that played out in book 6. I hate when I start a series before all the books are written, but this series is worth it. I can't wait for volume 4 to come out so I can see how it wraps up. Book 6 sets the story up for some exciting stuff. Character development was good.

I loved re-reading this series on these volumes. Soul Screamers has been one of my favorite series for a couple of years, and returning to this world I loved (and still love) so much was incredible. I'm still a little scared to read the last volume (I'm sure it will break my heart once again), but I enjoyed taking today to just read the stories that made me happy and opened the world of paranormal YA for me.

Book 5 - I freaking loved it! So much going on with the impending death of a Main Character and the author took it to great heights. Great ending too. I expected something like this to happen at the end, but it was different. Good stuff.

Book 5.5 - I still hate Sophie. Luca is nuts!

Book 6 - Holy Crap! I can't believe all the events that are going on! So much crazyness! But good crazyness. Oh! some scenes and characters made me want to cry. OMG the sadness in some moments! Very good book!

Rating: 3.5/4 stars

So far, I have given these series 4.5 stars, but I honestly got really annoyed by Kaylee.
I know, Nash was wrong too and all of it was not her fault, but this? What she did to him? And how she acted?

I did enjoy the story in spite of it, and I can't wait what'll happen in the next book!

Interesting to be able to read one book right after another instead of having to find the next edition. Though, I think that maybe the excerpt of Tod's life should have been at the beginning of the omnibus or at the end of the 2nd volume. Seemed really out of place.

Does this mean that 7 is just going to always be a single book? Because if that's the case, I wish I would've just bought the individual books. My series won't match now :\

It was amazing. It dwelled me in like a wave washing mr away, except this one is washing me in. It was a heart stopping ride; I couldn't get my eyes away drom the book.
