-- Four end-of-the-world novellas by four award-winning dark fantasy authors ---
* A cynical New York commodities broker on the eve of her wedding * A British advertising executive on vacation with her husband in Thailand * A troubled New Orleans pharmacy student caretaking her even more troubled little sister * A Hollywood D-Girl cracking under the strain of her surreal life
Each of these very different women finds herself in the middle of an apocalyptic disaster: the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, the tsunami in Thailand, Hurricane Katrina, and Southern California's dreaded "Big One." Each survives the ordeal with great personal loss: the death of loved ones, disfigurement, mental collapse. But each also finds herself in sudden possession of mysterious powers of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.
As the women are inexorably drawn together, their powers increase, but they quickly realize those powers can be used for evil as well as for good.
And with the signs of a coming Armageddon building around them, the women start to wonder...
What if the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse aren't men at all?
The fiction of acclaimed dark fantasy/supernatural thriller/horror authors Sarah Langan, Sarah Pinborough, Rhodi Hawk and Alexandra Sokoloff has garnered three Bram Stoker Awards, three Black Quill Awards, two British Fantasy Awards, two American Library Association Awards, an International Thriller Writers Award, starred Publisher’s Weekly reviews, and several nominations from venues such as the Anthony Award, the World Fantasy Award and the Shirley Jackson Award. Rhodi Hawk has been fascinated by storytelling since her earliest memory, when her grandmother read to her from Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Rhodi has been reading or writing ever since, and began her career as a transcription linguist in US Army intelligence. She later made a living as a technical writer during the Internet boom, working on her first novel in the early mornings and at night.
Rhodi Hawk won the International Thriller Writers Scholarship for her first work of fiction, A Twisted Ladder.
With all of the various apocalypse predictions and end-of-the-Mayan calendar mythology, this is the perfect accompaniment of stories meshed together to form a cohesive whole; a unique perspective on how an apocalypse might look. I enjoyed each of the vignettes and the way they were skillfully drawn together at the end. It was clearly a lot of fun for each of the writers to conceptualize and create each part. Good writing with good storylines in each section, this is a quick and enjoyable read to get your fill of apocalypse fiction.
Brilliant collection of novellas detailing four women's personal experiences during 911, the Boxind Day tsunami, hurricane Katrina and California's "big one". The result of these experiences they develop powers over fire, water, wind and earth, and discover eachother and their part in the coming apocalypse.
An interesting look at the four horsemen...sorry women of the apocalypse.
