Book 1 - One, Two ... He is coming for you
Set in the Danish coastal town of Karrebaeksminde, journalist Rebekka Franck returns to her hometown with her six year old daughter. She is trying to escape her ex-husband and starting a new life for her and her daughter, when the small sleepy town experiences a murder. One of the kingdoms wealthiest men is brutally murdered in his summer residence in Karrebaeksminde. While Rebekka Franck and her punk photographer Sune try to cover the story for the local newspaper another murder happens on a high society rich man. Now Rebekka Franck realizes that the drowsy little kingdom of Denmark has gotten its first serial killer and soon a series of dark secrets - long buried but not forgotten - will see the day of light.
One, Two ... He is coming for you is the first book in Willow Rose's mystery-series about the reporter Rebekka Franck and her photographer Sune.

BOOK 2 - Three, Four ... Better lock your door:
It was supposed to be a night of fun, pleasure, lust and pain for Susanne Larsen when she agreed to meet with a stranger from a S&M chatroom. She met him for dinner that later led to casual, anonymous sex at the hotel-room at the local inn.

But someone else showed up in the room and suddenly it was no longer a game.

Zeeland Times star-reporter Rebekka Franck and her photographer Sune are covering the case for the news-paper and soon they find themselves deeply involved in a story of terrifying horror and ugly secrets.

BOOK 3 - Five, Six ... Grab your Crucifix:

The Priest is a man with a mission from God. He is to help those possessed by evil to finally become free from their stronghold. He has expelled demons for years and had great success.

But there is one demon he never managed to cast out. And that demon has now come back to get him.

Rebekka Franck and Sune are on a vacation in Northern Zeeland when they suddenly find themselves involved in what turns out to be their most horrifying case to this date.

"Five, Six ... grab your crucifix" is a spine-chilling Scandinavian mystery-novel from the International Bestselling author Willow Rose. It is the third book in her series about the Danish reporter Rebekka Franck.

This series lost a star for what seems to be poor translation and taking a little to literally the writers rule of show me don't tell me. More than once I found myself skimming paragraphs due to repeated descriptions. The plots were good although by book 3 her "twists" were becoming obvious. I also found the the character Rebekka a little flat and whiny. .... Still don't know if that was translation issue. Whodunit set in Denmark with female lead makes for a decent read.

I read these books as individual Kindle books, and found each to be a pretty quick read. Since I also have this omnibus edition in my library, I thought I would post the individual reviews as an omnibus review.

One, Two ***
There is much that I liked about ONE, TWO … He is coming for you,
and one thing not so much. If you're looking for a fast read and are into the really nasty serial killer genre, this book is for you. It is well plotted and has very subtle foreshadowing of the ending. My only problem with the book is that it seemed to have random words missing here and there, but for the most part the word was easy enough to add as I read. I'm not sure if it is an idiomatic English issue or just a writer who thinks faster than she types.

I am by no means ready to give up on the Rebekka Franck series. Quick reads are a staple of a busy life and a passion for the printed word. Today I plan on starting the next book in the series THREE, FOUR … Better lock your door.

Three, Four ****
Rebekkah Franck has a nose for news and really bad taste in men. Here is a novel whose tautly crafted plot is the skeleton upon which the characters provide all the meat that is necessary to tell the story. THREE, FOUR is gristly and raw, and lends itself to my metaphor quite nicely.

When you see the titles in the Rebekkah Franck series, you immediately start singing the old nursery rhyme… One, two buckle my shoe; three four close the door, and so on. The titles also let you know that you are reading the books in the right order. There is enough continuity in this, the second book, for me to appreciate having read the first in the series. On the other hand, it is possible to pick this one up and get enough background while turning the pages to see what comes next.

For me, a good series needs a good back story. I often wait until it seems like there will be no new books added to a series so I can binge read them one after another. The back story needs to develop over time so that the characters do not stagnate. The back story here is both realistic and dynamic.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Five, Six ****
Willow Rose deserves to be called a scream queen. She grabs her readers from the very first page with some unimaginable horror. This prelude of horror, is then followed by a mundane look at the series' main character and those around her. These elements sit in stark contrast to each other. Rebekka Franck, hard-boiled Iraq/Afghanistan war correspondent, is actually a domestic mess. She worries about everything, and most especially about her daughter. If you've been following the series thus far, you understand why. However, to me, this mother and daughter relationship goes beyond rational. I guess that's because I raised my own kids to be independent.

I am still troubled by the somewhat sloppy editing. I can't quite decide if the misuse of prepositions is deliberate to add the flavor of foreignness, or just a lack of editing. Yet, it does not trouble me enough to stop reading these books. In this Rebekka Franck outing, Willow Rose has managed to align two very troubling issues of our times in a way that is both clever and more than a little disturbing. She is also very spare with her foreshadowing of the outcome. If you speculate on whodunit as you read, you won't get even a little bit close to the answer until pretty close to the end.

Rebekka Franck Volumes 1-3 is a box set of the first three volumes of the Rebekka Franck mysteries by Willow Rose. Willow Rose is originally from Denmark although she now lives in Florida. The Rebekka Franck mysteries are some of her older books and they are set in Denmark. The subjects of her newer mysteries have moved on to other places.

One, Two … He is Coming for You

Rebekka Franck is a newspaper reporter. She used to be the star reporter for a large paper in Aarhus, the second biggest town in Denmark. But then her husband took to locking her and her daughter in their basement, and she had to get away. She returned to her hometown, Karrebaeksminde, a small little town where her father still lives, and got a job at a local paper there. So, she has a real reason to go investigating when a dead body is found at a rich man’s beach house.

Then other murders are discovered in this little town where nothing ever happens, and it turns into the biggest serial killer case in recent memory.

This is the case that sets the names of all the books in this series. It seems that the murders all have some sort of movie theme, and this first one draws heavily from Nightmare on Elm Street, with Freddy Krueger and his finger knives. And the messed-up jump rope rhyme the kids sing in the movies.

These murders are all pretty gruesome. And more and more puzzling the farther they go on. There are all sorts of false leads. Rebekka’s photographer is arrested for one of the murders – of the head of a juvenile correction facility where he was an inmate during his youth. But though the key to the murders has to do with a school, the juvenile facility is not that school. Eventually, Sune, the photographer, is released and they and the police go on to solve the case.

Rebekka has a different, unrelated scare, in the middle of all this when her husband reappears and takes her daughter, Julie, back home with him. And gives her some sort of sleeping medication that he uses himself and unintentionally nearly overdoses her.

Three, Four … Better Lock Your Door

Another set of serial killings breaks out. Rebekka and the police are baffled as to what the connection between them can be. Except that the killer performs lobotomies on all of them while they are still alive.

This time a reporter for another paper keeps showing up at all the crime scenes and getting all the information before Rebekka gets there. He seems very helpful – until he tries to kill her.

It turns out that the truth about this case could bring the government down.

So, what to do? And how to avoid getting killed in the meantime.

Five, Six … Grab Your Crucifix

This is the scariest of the three mysteries in this set, and that is saying something.

Rebekka’s stories have caused the downfall of the government. In return (revenge perhaps?) there has been a steady barrage of slurs leveled against her from unknown sources. Right now, Rebekka and Sune, who have almost decided to get married, along with their kids and Rebekka’s father, have decided to take a winter vacation in the woods to get away from everything. Now, who is going to report the news?

It doesn’t seem to matter. News follows them anyway. It turns out that their vacation cabin is practically next door to a camp occupied by a peculiar religious sect that calls itself The Way. They barely get their sleds unpacked before strange deaths begin occurring at The Way’s camp, complete with screaming at night and everything.

At first, it just looks like natural deaths accompanied by screaming. There is no real indication of murders taking place. Maybe these people have been doing some kind of drug. It wouldn’t be especially unbelievable for this bunch. Rebekka researches the group and finds that they have a reputation for taking in troubled kids and brainwashing them.

Like the other two books, the key to solving this mystery lies in finding who wants revenge for something that happened years ago. But this something is so unusual that it makes the bizarre events of the first two books look like the happenings of your average weekday. It involves a girl named Edwina known as “the Chernobyl kid” in the neighboring towns who was regarded by the members of The Way, who finally took her in when no one else would as an actual Demon. The Chernobyl connection may have been real, pointing up how too close Denmark is to that unfortunate place.

There seems to be a later book that deals specifically with Edwina.

Anyway, I bet Rebekka and Sune will think twice before going on a winter vacation in the woods again.

Intrepid female reporter in Denmark

Stories just seem to "happen" when reporter Rebekka and her photographer Sune are around; she documents them for her editor. Add her aging father and her daughter and Sune's son and end up with tales that will capture your interest as they unfold. I especially liked the sense of innocent joy in living that came through even when the characters were encountering challenges. Be prepared, however, for butchered English where grammar and syntax are largely ignored and just slightly wrong word usages and sentence structures will try to drive your inner editor mad. Series would benefit from a good proofreader. However, if you can gift your inner reader with a slight generic Scandinavian accent, the pleasant cadence can make the books somewhat more enjoyable.

Psychological Thrillers Times Three

Willow Rose has the plots down to perfection. The suspense is on point. The protagonists are interesting and evolve from book to book. The villains are appropriately twisted. But there is no real sense of place or atmosphere. In addition the misuse of words and the typographical errors disrupt the story flow. A little help from a good editor would add another star to this review.

These were good reads except for the fact that deviant sexual themes ran through all three books. Also, the third book really needed to be edited for grammatical errors. Other than this, I found myself trying to figure out who the bad guys were before the big reveals. The twists and turns really kept me on my toes.

Do not read this if any of the following annoy you:
Depictions of the police and doctors as imbeciles incapable of doing their jobs without help from a reporter; said reporter being as dense as a post; a cringe-worthy personal relationship; non-existent proofreading.

I enjoyed the series very much. Rebecca Franck is easy to relate to. Willow Rose's gift of description is such, that one can smell the coffee and almost taste the cake her office mate brings to the break room. Her crime scenes are equally well narrated.

Always a reporter

Rebekka is a small town reporter, transplanted from a big paper in a big city. Who knew how many stories there is to write in such a small town?

I vote "4" stars for the series, but "3" for the need for a good editor. Many parts of these books read as if English is a second language. That's not terrible - in fact, in some cases it adds a dimension to the books in a positive way. However, there are SO MANY just distracting errors that it detracts from the story flow. All in all, the stories are good, interesting, and the characters enhance the stories.

#1: This is a really good series. This first one seemed a bit raw, like the author is maybe not too experienced yet (I'm not sure if this is one of her first books or not). It doesn't take away from the fact that it's a good story, a good mystery and the characters are very likable and well developed. And if you're a series fan, like me, there's nothing better than reading a series of books back to back to immerse yourself in the protagonist's life. This book has Rebekka Franck, journalist, on the trail of a murderer of wealthy men. She seems to be better at getting to the bottom of the connection of these men than the police do and she gets right in the middle of the investigation, along with her photographer, Sune. I would recommend this series for thriller/mystery readers. This wasn't my favorite of the series but it's still pretty good. Well deserving of the 4 stars.

#2: I've had this series sitting in my TBR pile ready to read for a while and I'm glad I finally got the time to read them. I'm halfway through now and I'm really enjoying the saga of protagonist Rebekka Franck, journalist. The author does a wonderful job of giving a great mystery, a good background story, and working on creating some really fleshed out characters. I could tell that the author had grown in her writing in this second book. I particularly liked this book as it had a psychological thriller edge to it. The whole who-done-it aspect kept me turning page after page while I lost track of time. If you like thrillers, particularly psychological thrillers, you should grab this book. Yes, you could even read this book as a stand alone, but I am recommending at least the first 3 books (all that I've read so far) as I'm really enjoying this series.

#3: I've had this series on my TBR list for a couple years and finally have had time to read it. I am devouring it very quickly too as the saga of journalist Rebekka Franck is really good. The author has done a wonderful job of fleshing out her character, and the others, and it's fun to see how her personal story has grown in these first three books. The best part is the exciting thriller storylines that the author has come up with. Not for the squeamish at all! Yikes! This book starts out with a man called "The Priest" from a well-known cult dying a horrific death. How and why did this occur? And will Rebekka be able to pull more information from the very private people of the cult than the police have gotten so far? As more and more people die of these mysteries deaths, others start to become sick too. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and the pace was so fast that the book was over before I knew it. I'm finding that this author is good at hooking the reader into the story and not letting go until the end--something that I can't get enough of. Can't wait to dig into book #4. Another great addition to the series. Could very well be read as a stand alone but if you're a thriller fan, read them all!
