This is a small tragedy, in terms of pages but a catastrophe for the family in question.

We read about a Polish family, which has to cope with the fate of the defeated or of the small people conquered by an empire, in this case a rather evil one: Russia.

Like in another Tolstoy story, here I learn about the cruelty of the Russian leaders: prisoners are lashed until they die.

This Polish family has to suffer a tragic fate. After both their children die in a kind of captivity, the parents decide to try to escape. The mother comes up with an interesting, if unfortunate plot:

The husband will write a good bye, suicide note and that will be found together with his coat, on the banks of the nearby river. The authorities will think he is drowned.

The Polish lady would ask for the remains of her children, which she would pretend to carry away to Poland. Instead, in the box, she would take away her husband, a prisoner of the Russians.

Everything goes according to plan, up to the final stages of the execution. A dog gives the Polish officer away and the Russians arrest him.

I was so sorry, but then life is unfair, full of injustice even if we have an All mighty God…

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.

His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Γιατί; Γιατί;" φώναξε εκείνη και, ξεσπώντας σε υστερικά χάχανα. έπεσε με δύναμη πάνω στο κατεβασμένο από την άμαξα κιβώτιο.

Ενώ ο Τολστόι μας έχει συνηθίσει σε μεγάλα μυθιστορήματα με περίπλοκους χαρακτήρες και ιστορίες που μπλέκονται η μία με την άλλη (Πόλεμος και Ειρήνη, Άννα Καρένινα) στο διήγημά του αυτό, γραμμένο μάλιστα στη δύση της ζωής τους, αντιλαμβανόμαστε την δεινότητα του συγγραφέα να πλάθει χαρακτήρες και ιστορίες μέσα σε λίγες μόνο σελίδες. Το γεγονός ότι και ο ίδιος ο αναγνώστης στο τέλος αυτής της σύντομης ιστορίας ρωτάει μαζί με τους ήρωες "Γιατί;" είναι τρανή απόδειξη ότι δεν χρειάζεται ένας καλός συγγραφέας πολλές σελίδες, για να καταφέρει να διεγείρει συναισθηματικά το κοινό του.
Σε αυτό το διήγημα-μανιφέστο εναντίων της απολυταρχίας ακολουθούμε ένα ερωτευμένο ζευγάρι και τις δυσκολίες που καλείται να αντιμετωπίσει εξαιτίας μιας αποτυχιμένης επανάστασης. Είναι γρήγορο, ευανάγνωστο κι απλό, και μέσα από την απλότητα του αυτή τα γεγονότα (αληθινά δυστυχώς) μας γίνονται πιο ξεκάθαρα και τα αντιλαμβανόμαστε σε όλη τη σοβαρότητά τους. Επιπλέον, το βιβλίο αυτό είναι ιδανικό και για όσους ενδιαφέρονται για τα ιστορικά γεγονόταν που προηγήθηκαν της Ρωσικής επανάστασης του 1917, καθώς μας δίνει μια περιληπτική εικόνα των όσων προηγήθηκαν, αφού οι ήρωές μας ζούν την εποχή εκείνη.
Εγώ διάβασα το βιβλίο αυτό από τις εκδόσεις Οξύ, που είχαν και μια πολύ κατατοπιστική εισαγωγή, όπως και παράρτημα με σημειώσεις, ώστε να μείνουν όσο πιο πιστοί γίνεται στο αρχικό κείμενο.
Θα κλείσω με την αρχή της Εισαγωγής του βιβλίου: "Η Ρωσία έχει δύο τσάρους. Τον Νικόλαο Β' και τον Λέοντα Τολστόι. Στη μεταξύ τους αναμέτρηση, νικητής αναδεικνύεται πάντα ο συγγραφέας."
