[back cover text] Since 1968, The Last Poets have been central to New York street poetry. In the rap explosion their poems are being rediscovered, re-mixed and reviewed. Successful gigs in Britain, and now albums on the Celluloid label, are winning a new enthusiastic following for The Last Poets.
I'm not a fan of The Last Poets music, but enjoyed this little book of their lyrics in poetry form far more than I thought I would. An interesting glimpse into a time and place and mood that I appreciated being invited to see via its pages. I especially had fun compiling a playlist with songs from all the jazz greats mentioned by name in "Bird's Word."
