A tormented man, Greg Parker, is obsessed with a woman he raped 16 years ago, but hasn't seen since then. Over the years, he transforms himself from Johnny Moretti, the skinny geek and rapist, into a very attractive and manipulative man, not even recognizable to himself.
The woman, Abbie Kolbeck, is haunted by the memory of her rapist, someone she trusted. When he contacts her after all those years, she's passionately drawn to him, believing the familiar feeling between them means their union is fate. She has no idea she's falling for her rapist.
After a whirlwind romance, Abbie finds that Greg is being investigated for the murder of his best friend and the friend's girlfriend. And after a not-so-gentle session in bed, she realizes that he's the man she forgave for raping her so long ago.
Abbie desperately wants to believe his denials, but she's torn between her feelings for him, and her desire to protect her daughter and herself from a man the police are telling her is a murderer.
DNF Was this book supposed to be funny??? Everyone in this book was crazy, nuts, mental!!! I can't believe I wasted my time on this! I am so p*#sed off right now! That is all!
Holy Motherfuckin' Shit! What in the FUCK just happened!?!? I........, I don't even know what to say right now, shit! Just give me a second, I need to pick my ass up off the ground and pull my heart out of Kitten Jackson's fist real quick and figure out what the fuck I just witnessed! What in the hell was THAT?!?
Alright, now. I guess I should tell you a bit about the story, yeah, we'll start there. Maybe once we get the ball rolling I'll shake off some of the fear that's frozen me stupid. Sheesus Christ, I swear! This is a seriously psychotic and fucked, FUCKED up love story. This story made me question my morals (which, hell they already were pretty few and far between) and my self beliefs! And, I'm pretty damn sure I'm going to hell for even calling it a love story, but I really don't give a shit, 'cause that's what it is. It's wrong, so damn wrong. I can't even tell you how wrong, and I loved it! I tore through this shit like a fiend and loved every second of it!!!
This bat shit crazy, masochistic, and totally fucked up love story belongs to Abbie and Greg, it isn't a love story that I envy, or one that I'd wish on anyone, however, it is theirs and theirs alone. Their story isn't for the faint at heart, btw, if you hadn't gathered that from all the rambling that occurred up there ^
We begin the story with Greg, he has been on a hamster wheel, just going through the motions over the last 15 years. And he is getting sick and damn tired of it. Greg's character is absolutely fascinating to me. His character has the ability to simultaneously make you cringe, twist your face in disgust, and, yes I'm actually fixin' to fuckin saying this, warm your heart and feel sympathy and compassion for him. You want to fix him so bad. You know he wants to be fixed, he doesn't like what he is, hell is tried to, no he DID, run from it before. He has more issues than half the psych ward down town. However his main issues begin with Sex. In order for him to become aroused, he has for the last 15 years, had to simulate rape. Society tells us that this is wrong, and if you need to hurt, or rape to reach orgasm, then you should probably see the nearest available psychiatrist. However! Yes, I'm defending him! In some circles, he would be called a Sadist, and if he were to stay in said circles, he'd probably be a bad ass, anywho, back to the point. As the story continues we find out that the only woman he ever loved Abbie, was his first, first victim, and his "first" first. He recently found her again through Facebook and he has contacted her. He sees she isn't in a relationship, and decides he is ready to go back home. Johnny Moretti ran away from home 15 years ago after he drunkenly lost his shit and raped the love of his life and best friend. Yep, he knew he had totally fucked up, so he took off, gathered as much cash as he could, some clothes, and just took off. Johnny Moretti was supposed to have died that night, died, dead......gone. Greg Parker is a new man, in a new town. And he is ready to make something of himself. Now, 15 yrs later, Greg wants to go home, he wants back in Abbie's life. He looks NOTHING like he did the last time Abbie saw him, he knows she'll never recognize him. And he knows that she is the only woman for him, and with Abbie he can have the life he always wanted, he would never hurt her again. He loves her, how could he? He knows he can make it right this time! So he throws out the bait, sends Abbie a few messages thru Facebook, letting her know he's gonna be in town on business and that he may stop by her coffee shop. Plane tickets bought, he packs, he is so excited to be with Abbie again....... Abbie has lived in Pensacola her whole life. After her grandmother passed away a few years back she inherits her home and coffee shop. She renovates both, and directs the coffee shop in a new and up to date direction. She has great friends, and life may have just gotten a little better. The hottie from FB, he said they'd met before, but she doesn't recall it, and with him being as fine as he is she finds that odd, he would've definitely stuck out in her memory, anyway, he just sent her a message, he'll be in town on business and will probably stop by the shop! When Abbie and Greg come together the chemistry is off the charts! She has never felt this way about any man! Abbie has a hard time keeping her head on straight half the time. And Greg knows he isn't leaving, he and Abbie are to right for each other, she soothes the beast in him, and for the first time in his life he is able to bring himself relief with out violent thoughts. Finally, he can have the life he was supposed to have. Then things begin to get tricky, Greg's best friend Mark and his girlfriend turn up murdered. While Greg is in New York helping the family and grieving his best friend, Abbie's ex boyfriend attacks her, beating the shit out of her and tries to rape her. Greg gets both business and personal affairs settled in New York and heads back to help Abbie out after the attack. Besides a bruised and battered Abbie, their relationship begins to grow pretty quickly, he has told her he plans to move to Pensacola and she is out of this world excited! How can a woman heal a broken man over night? Fix all of his issues, 15 yr old issues, just by being with him, around him, and loving him. We know he's Keeping Secrets, and Abbie has a few of her own, so when the shit hits the fan, when the lid is ripped off of Pandora's box, is it even possible for Abbie to listen, much less forgive Greg? How long will Greg keep his beast on a leash, it's getting harder and harder to hold it back. Is everything as it seems? Has the light been shed on all things and shown to the reader? Ha, well hell I'm not telling ya! I will say, only because I love you, that when you are on Amazon/Smashwords or at your neighborhood book store, do yourself a favor and pick up BOTH Keeping Secrets I & II, because the only thing that got me through writing this review is that I know if I hurry this shit up I can go diving off into Keeping Secrets II: No More Skeletons! Because the cliffhanger in book one left me screaming, raving, and ranting like, well, like I did up there at the beginning of my review. Yep, just like that, lmao.
Keeping Secrets gets 5 -The most ugly, masochist, fucked up love story of all time- Kimmi stars! Those are always the best, 'cause those type of stars make ya know that you may have finished this story, but it's not finished with you.................
OMG!!!! This book had me hanging onto the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it! I could never figure did he or didn't he and it was driving me NUTS!!! Usually when I read a suspenseful thriller I can figure out early on or at least make my predictions about what I think is and will happen. Keeping Secrets had me flip flopping like a teenage girl with a new heart throb!
Abbie is a beautiful, popular, college student who gains the attention of a nerdy wallflower. Johnny, or Greg, quickly becomes obsessed with Abbie after he figures out that Abbie does not quite feel the same way about him. After showing up at a frat party and getting very publicly shunned, Johnny, AKA Greg, makes a rash decision to wait at her apartment. Whether he wanted to just talk or not was never mentioned because his anger overtook him and he raped Abbie ad ran away.
14 years later Johnny has changed his identity... Greg... he is now a successful house flipper in New York, an extremely handsome man, and has a seriously F'ed up image of women, sex, and relationships. He has never gotten over his obsession with Abbie and decides to look her up on Facebook. He friends her and convinces himself that maybe with his new name, new image, and new confidence... maybe she will fall for him.
Greg's plan seems to be working until bodies start falling everywhere he leaves. I cannot say that I ever really trusted Greg, but I think some deep down part of me hoped that Greg was a changed man and he and Abbie could find love. Keeping Secrets had a dark side that was actually a nice change from the love stories I have been reading. It was awesome to read a book and not be easily able to predict the ending. I never knew if Greg was lying or was he being framed. I found myself on more than one occasion with the open mouthed, what the heck just happened look on my face!! I give Keeping Secrets 4 stars on the knock my socks off scale!! Kudos to Kitten K. Jackson for writing an amazeball thriller that kept me guessing from start to finish!
I'm blown away. Review to come later. I must start book 2 now, can't wait any longer.
Updated..... (couple days later) (Spoiler Free) This book is astonishing. Like I said before, I'm blown away by the depth of this book. From page one, I was enthralled by Greg. I desperately wanted to understand him and what drove him to do all the things that he did.
We know from the very beginning that Greg rapped Abbie 16 years ago then ran and was never heard or seen from again. As the book progresses we learn what drove Greg to rape Abbie. We also learn more about his childhood and what he has been up to since the rape. He goes back to be with Abbie 16 years later as a completely different man. He wants to be good and make up for the past and to prove his love, but as his past starts to catch up with him, secrets start to be revealed.
I must say that this is not a typical love story, hell its technically not even a love story at all. Its a psychotic thriller, with a touch of obsession and a hint of love. Its very fucked up, its intense and well, just simply so freakin twisted. Yet I couldn't help but feel like this was a love story after all, a very crazy love story.
I still don't know how I feel about it in the end. I say this all the time but I love a book that can get me all worked up. I love when I feel what the characters feel, and boy did I feel what Abbie was feeling. Love, Hate, more love, more hate, shock, betrayal, scared, and so damn conflicted. I spent so much of this book on the edge of my seat, pulling out my hair and wanting to bite all my nails off. I never knew what was coming next. There was never a dull moment and so many twists and turns. This is not for the faint of heart or for anyone who can not handle books that are so outside normal. This is a very dark and gritty book.
Im not use to Ms. Jacksons style of writing. But I got the gest of the story. The story is sad, full of angst, sex, killing, abuse, and a phycological mind fuck with lots of twist and turns. No HEA...
This is fiction that relies upon real life crime storys like the ones told on Nancy Grace. Most people get there is not always a HEA..
There is a book 2 and its a continuation of the first story. If book one is a mind fuck.. Book 2 is a cluster fuck.
I usually don't write reviews...but I will (sorta try) for this book. Kitten Jackson is an incredible writer. I was shocked that I liked this book considering I usually only read PNR books. The story-line is unique with a well thought out plot that takes itself careening WAY outside of the proverbial box. Great job Author Kitten Jackson. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
k let me start all this off by saying that I want to marry Kitten K. Jackson! I did not get another perfect love story with Keeping Secrets in fact I got a fucked up....what the fuck am I reading but can't put down edge of my seat read!!! Yeah like that. I am soooo thankful. I needed that, seems that even though I love my HEA's thats all I get now. So this mind fuck of a thriller is GRRRREAT!!!
So this is typically not how I start my reviews but well I am Sandie and I love keepin you all on your toes. Greg is a pretty effed up guy. I know what your probably thinking WTF is wrong with you. I know I know but don't get a judgey on me now. Alright so yes Greg or Johnny as he was known in the past raped Abbie. A beautiful woman back in college. She never really gave him the time of day and he was a shy and well by description not all that good looking. After he does this and she recognizes him and he flees, becomes a whole new person Greg. This where I tell you that you will need to hold on because I think several times I was like ooooh I see where this is headed and then nope that wasn't what I was expecting. Greg (Johnny) now 14 years older decides to look up Abbie. OK I will admit that is kind of creepy and weird but I went with it, because now I was all in, needed to see how this all played out. I am so glad I kept reading, lets see if I can get a good rundown without giving too much away ready....Abbie and Greg begin to date, saw that coming but what I did not anticipate was the way I would feel for Greg. Several times I was like awww maybe he's not so bad, then Id be like what the hell, back to ok this is weird, and then finally WTF was that!!! My concern was for Abbie, because it was like lie upon lie upon lie...but then I would be like wait was he lying? is something else happening that I can 't see coming? WTH?....and I couldn't stop spinning. Then dead bodies began to appear and I was like oh hell nooooo. It just got crazier and crazier. I think Kitty seriously had me like this
By the end I was just OMG seriously? seriously!!!! I didn't know if I wanted to hug Kitty or smack her for making me go through all of that. LOL Needless to say I enjoyed the ride. NOT a HEA if thats what you are hoping for. This is a suspense filled book. With craziness, seat gripping suspense. I loved every damn minute of it!!!
My heart is still pumping from reading the end of Keeping Secrets. Kitten Jackson is clearly talented in writing a good suspense novel. Some of you may recall I had her on for an Author interview. To read her interview just check the archives under the author interview tab.
Okay there was so much I liked about the story and a few things that annoyed me. I'll start with the good stuff..
The story leads in with Greg Parker, a sadistic, tormented guy whose only way of getting off is by raping his women. At first I raised a brow but was immediately peaked by what the heck was his problem. The story goes on and we discover that he has some major secrets he's been hiding including that he is living under an alias in order to run from his past. Well it's a past he is welcoming back into his life assuming that the girl he hurt all those years ago would not recognize him. Greg is screwed up in the head, he believes that because he has made a new life under a new name, not even legally might I add. That he can start a new with this girl he raped.
Sadly for a while he actually pulls it off. And the girl even though suspect to the way he says he met her from a previous time, not mentioning his former life, she brushes it off given her current state of drama with her recent ex. Enter Abbie. She's trying to do right by her life and make a living and she seems pretty well put together and established. Greg easily though is able to worm his way into her life and her heart. Amist all this wooing Greg becomes part of an investigation when he finds out while on his little trip to Florida that his best friend and female companion were murdered. At first I thought it was him but later in the story it seems he is all broken up about the whole thing and even at the funeral he is a wreck I sort of began to believe that maybe it was someone else. I'll save the rest of the plot in case you decide to read.
Moving on, aspects I truly loved. The dialogue was very well played. Kitten's writing and use of words were very good and her characters were very well mapped out and definitely three dimensional. I found myself very much engrossed in this story and in the end I still wanted to read more, that doesn't happen too often.
Things I didn't like: Most of the story bounces between limited third person pov and omniscient pov. I'm not a fan of Omniscient as you cannot truly get intimate with each character but the fact that the author separated them a lot helped me to get better acquainted. Toward the end though the story got a little preachy and that bothered me. Now had we gotten a sense from the beginning of the story about Abbie's religious beliefs which she seemed so emphatic about at the end of the story it would have made complete sense. But the way it all occurred all of a sudden seemed contrived and as if author decided this was a great time for a Christian plug about getting saved and forgiveness. Like I said this would have worked if the story started out that way. Say we see Abbie in a church praying, she talks about it at different times. But no, nada, nothing. Not until close to the end. And the only other thing that bothered me was that Abbie was too trusting. Now, grantit that I think was mainly her weakness as a character, basically her main flaw was that she was very willing to forgive and be so trusting.
When they tried to see the mother and explain what happened in the past I about fell off my seat with laughter at her response to the two nut cases. How in the heck did they think she would see things the same way. I didnt like that Abbie seemed in some ways to have good sense and then in others, its like hello aren't your red flags going off, but yet no matter how tormented she was by others she continued to allow it and let them mistreat her over and over. Which actually is really just showing her comfort with being treated that way. Now I say I don't like these things but they are what make the story, You can't have perfect characters and many times they mimic what some people do in real life. And for that I applaud Kitten because as I said, she did a great job conveying how messed up these people were in her story.
If you are looking for flowers, romance, hearts, and candy believe me this isn't the book for you. This isn't a romance novel and it's not for everyone. Even after just finishing book 1 I had to sit for a whole scratching my head thinking to myself did that seriously just happen??? There are very rarely for me books that I just cannot put down. This was one such book, I head this book until I could no longer see straight trying to figure out what was going to come next through the twists and turns that occur in this book. Think you know what's going to happen? Don't assume that you know because believe me you don't see some of the things in this book coming. Kitten is an excellent author who has a real gift for making every moment in a book jaw dropping and keeps you compelled to keep reading right towards the end.
So now I find myself trying to review this book without giving away too much which is hard for me because I have tendency to give too much away but here goes nothing...
In this book we meet Greg Parker he's calm, cool, and collected and what's that he gets off on raping women? To be more exact role playing which involves him raping women of course it's consensual but most of these women do it repeatedly hoping that Greg will magically fall in love with them but when that doesn't happen they take off and no matter how many times Greg has sex with women he just can't get one woman out of his mind, Abbie Kolbeck. While in a bar drinking his night away Greg confesses his secrets to his best friend Mark sixteen years ago his name was Johnny Moretti and he raped his friend Abbie in college after she hurt his feelings and he was drunk. Hurt and ashamed for what he had done, Johnny went to his stepmother demanded money and took off without ever looking back. Now known as Greg Parker he is not the same geek and average looking guy he was in college he's tall and he's strikingly good looking, he says that he's now a changed man and found Abbie on Facebook and made friends with her and wants to go down to Florida to see her. Of course Mark doesn't like the idea of Greg going to see her especially if Abbie finds out who raped her.
Abbie suspect who raped her all those years ago, but she never reported it to the police. Abbie has done surprisingly well for herself, one would think that the rape would have broken her but Abbie pulled through and is a strong independent woman. Abbie has plenty of her own problems even before Greg enters the picture having a psycho ex-boyfriend named Tim who stalks Abbie on a daily basis trying to get back at her even going as far as to steal her panties out of her drawer. When Greg contacts Abbie on Facebook she can't believe her luck that such a handsome man made friends with her and even sent her a message that says he would love to connect with her again, problem is Abbie doesn't remember ever meeting Greg.
Greg comes down to Florida to see Abbie and even against her better judgement she begins seeing Greg and their relationship is going so well he's so sweet and loving and kind and you do really start to believe that he is a changed man from the one he was all those years ago. But looks can be deceiving... When finally Abbie and Greg have sex, Abbie discovers that the man she has been seeing is the one and only guy that raped her in college her friend Johnny, couple that with Greg's best friend Mark and his girlfriend Vickie's murders and Abbie begins to question everything as show knows about Greg and starts to question her sanity. And who is Taylor and her role in all of this? You'll just have to read to find out. It was amazing and I am STILL thinking about this story, 5 AMAZING STARS!!!
After reading the description for this book, I knew there was no way it could possibly have a happy ending - so I dove into it eagerly. Every once in a while a girl needs a darker read that isn't all flowers and sunshine. For some reason, I kept imaging this book would end like Sleeping With The Enemy where Julia Roberts confesses to killing "an intruder" just before she shoots and kills her abusive husband (the look on his face was priceless!). Alas, Abbie isn't quite as tough and strong-willed as Julia was.
This is the story of Abbie, who gets raped in college by a guy who was a close friend of hers because she shunned him. This guy, who now calls himself Greg, has never given up his obsession with Abbie. He tries to reconnect with her using a new identify and a new look, hoping she'll never find out who he really is. From the first page, Greg gave me the massive creeps. We see him at his most cruel and soulless. I couldn't imagine how he could possibly redeem himself in my eyes after that first chapter.
Although he never really gained my trust, I found myself wavering in my opinion of him. Maybe I was being mislead? Maybe he was an okay guy who was just dealt a shitty hand in life and deserved an opportunity to fix himself? But then why so many lies? But were they lies, or was he telling the truth? The questions kept coming. Just when I was certain I had him pegged and knew what was going on, I would start to doubt myself.
That kind of uncertainty and duplicity breeds discomfort. I found myself squirming in my seat while reding this book. I was so worried about what was going to happen to Abbie. It couldn't end well...or could it? At the same time, I wanted to slap Abbie. She was all sorts of insecure and co-dependent. No wonder she drew creepy guys to her like a moth to a flame.
I won't reveal any spoilers, but this story isn't resolved in the end - not by a long shot. Stay tuned for book 2. Things are only going to get worse for Abbie before they get better. If you are looking for a darker, more suspenseful read that isn't so cut and dry, check out Keeping Secrets.
*I was given this book in exchange for an honest review*
Let me start by saying this is not a romance in the "normal" sense of the word but for me it read as very romantic. Yes it was dark, twisted, and obviously the main characters had a ton of issues that they were dealing with, but I loved it.
It was exciting for me that Kitten took the risk, stepping outside what would normally be considered the "acceptable" outcomes and although a few of the plot points were a little predictable (if you think as twistedly as I do) the premise was definitely a good on.
This book is definitely not for everyone and people should be aware that there are some very adult themes running through with graphic descriptions some readers may find upsetting. To be honest I am not sure how many people would really "get" the whole story and see that the actions taken by the main character Greg, whilst not what the average person would do, made total sense to him. Kitten stays true to his character throughout and I think she does a great job keeping Abbie believable.
Not everyone in the world is going to make the best choices. People are going to make mistakes, and they are going to find ways to live with them ..... even if these ways are not what society would like to believe would happen.
I gave Keeping Secrets 5 out of 5 stars and let me add that I was VERY glad that I had book 2 on hand. Those that don't? Prepare yourself for a cliffhanger!
This book left me reeling, totally stunned, in all honesty I wasn't sure it was gonna be something I enjoyed but I couldn't put it down.
This book centres around rape, obsession and murder but doesn't glorify Or justify the events. What this author does do is lead you through a story full of deceit, intrigue and a truly messed up version of love.
Greg's character is complex and incredibly well written, he'll do anything to prove to Abbie that he loves her but does that include removing anyone he perceives is a threat ? His psychotic behaviour is mind blowing.
Abbie is a woman who clearly has issues caused by events from her teens. There were times I admired her strength and ability to make peace with the events of her past and at other times I wanted to shake some sense into her.
This is an incredible read about two damaged people tied together by a single event, I went from anger to sympathy to disbelief as this book progressed. I don't see there being a happy outcome, the question is how many more will be damaged before it's resolved ? I HAVE to see how this story progresses in book 2.
This is a truly unique book and is commended for the courage to step outside the box of the same old, same old. The author has effortlessly spliced together the genres of romance and horror. I haven’t seen that done before and I thoroughly enjoyed the read.
Without giving any spoilers, this is a story about the decisions made and the circumstances leading up to the evolving of a character. Would genetics have scored over upbringing? What motivated a person to act as they did? The characters shine forth as neither totally good, nor totally bad, but instead, totally real. The circumstances leading up to life changing decisions are skillfully interwoven in such a way that the reader can make up their own mind. At the end, there is sympathy for all the characters, irrespective of what they have done to arrive where they did. It is believable and heart wrenching. Highly recommended. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
What would you do to keep the one thing in life you want most close? Would you kill for them?
"You don't control anything another person does. He has choices." This line is probably one of my favorite quotes in the entire story. Not only is this a great line but in a oversimplified way it describes this amazingly intriguing story of obsession, perception, and truth.
Greg has choices, for instance he chose to go back to Abbie's room that night 15 years ago. He chose to peel away Johnny Moretti and become Greg Parker, He chose to find and become apart of Abbie's life again.
Each of these choices keeps readers on a journey where we get little peaks into an amazingly intelligent but very dark mind. I of course did things backwards and read the 2nd book first, doing this did ruin some of the surprises but it gave me the opportunity to see how Ms. Jackson told the beginning of an enthralling series and how unraveled Greg's web of lies and ... (Read the story and find out ;)
This book intrigued me more than I thought it would as I started reading. Honestly, I was having conflicting feelings about Greg being the way he is (won’t spoil it for those of you who haven’t read it), but in the end I just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. The author shows great potential with her talent to spin a tale, but there are always areas for improvement. That being said, if I can’t put a book down until it is finished, you know I am enjoying it. There is something to be said for the daring subjects and emotions that the author conveyed in this book. A lot of people might turn up their nose and scoff at this book because of the graphic undertones, but- to me- that’s what made it different from all of the other mystery books in publication today.
WOW!!! I wish there were more stars that I could add! This is the first book of Kitten's that I have read and she is most definitely an author that is on my favorites list!! This book was incredible! It had everything - love, hate, suspense, murder, humor, excitement, action, mystery.........the list goes on and on. The story was fantastic and full of surprises! Just when you think you know what is going to happen next, the author completely takes you by surprise! There were so many twists and turns, i couldn't put the book down! I love it when an author can completely make me forget about reality and suck me into their world, where you feel like you are THERE with the amazing characters! I cannot wait to start reading the sequel! BRAVO, KITTEN JACKSON!!! You've got a fan for life!!!
This book isn't my usual genre of choice but it was recommended to me by Gena Lutz so I figured I would give it a shot. Very well written book. There is a lot of "What the Hell" moments throughout but a lot of the situations really make you think. Do I think that the main characters are crazy? Hell yes I do! I over think a lot of books so I figured out pretty much what was going on from the beginning. I am curious though, as to how the author is going to take book 2. Will Greg be not a crazy as we all think? Is there more to Abbie than we know? Many, many things could happen. This is definitely a author that I am going to be keeping my eye on in the future.
This was different than what Im used to reading, I knew this before I started reading but it was good! Somehow I really started to care for Greg, don't ask me why because it makes no sense! I had some things figured out but I still didn't know all of the twists and turns within book. I feel like I should WANT to slap Abbie, but I think she really needs a psychiatrist first and foremost. So anyways it was a good read with suspence and Thriller best fits a discription.
Amazingly awesome recently New to me author. This was a thrill ride of a read. You are so going to feel right along with her. He will make your skin crawl and give you goosebumps the next minute. Grab a drink and snack because you will not want to set this down to find out how this plays out. I can't wait to read what is next from this author.
Ms. Jackson has done a very commendable job of writing about the very difficult issue of rape. The book is earthy and gritty which is how I like my thrillers.
Here's my review that's posed on Book Crush's blog:
I gotta give it up to Kitten, as this book indicates that she likes to write about things that she hopes never happen to her, let alone things I think no one wants to experience. For those reasons, this book was disturbing in ways that drove me insane at times. The book begins full force introducing us to Greg/Johnny and his issues with needing to role play rape to get off in his sexual encounters. Greg/Johnny will do "anything" to get what he wants as he likes control in all areas of his life. Greg/Johnny wants and succeeds in meeting back up with the woman, Abbie, he raped in college. The psychological problems they both face made me scream that they both need to be in INTENSE therapy and stay away from each other. I wanted to throw my book at times as it seemed Abbie was falling into his lies due to her co-dependency. When she finally snapped out of it, the book was over.
Where can kudos be given, the suspense kept me reading as you got to see from so many different perspectives what the characters were thinking and experiencing. I also followed the psychological issues as as a therapist and connecting those to past traumatic experiences the characters went through. This in it self kept me reading because I wanted to see how it played out. But knowing there's a sequel, (Keeping Secrets II: No More Skeletons) the ending is a cliffhanger. For my first time reading from this author, I didn't know what to expect. If you're the faint of heart, this book is not for you. This is no hot and sexy romance, but if you like psychological reads that make you wonder why people would make different choices, than this book is for you.
Fair warning this is not your every day love story. It's quite different than dark angst though as well. Maybe I would classify this as in the middle. Either way a great read. I've never ready anything by Kitten before but have to say I was impressed.
Both of the main characters have some serious emotional problems. Greg well who knows when he's lying to no end or telling the truth and Abbie has to just believe him. Which I'm impressed how the author was able to pull off keeping Abbie to believe him. So many secrets. It's quite fast paced just to figure out what's going on. Loved it. Till the dang end when it's a cliffhanger! Ugh...Need book 2.
This book isn't going to be for everyone but I truly enjoyed it's ride. It is graphic so far warning. I just want to believe Greg is reformed lol.
2.5 stars......Umm ok...this was a weird one. It started slow, and wasn't bad, then it got pretty good, then....WTF??? And it ended and I needed to see what the heck happen because I am a glutton for punishment....
Hmmm WOW!!! Like flatline..... WOW! 3.5! Not my normal type of book but I finished it in 5 hours. Sadly I skipped to the end of book 2 and I'm still feeling like WOW... How did that happen.
Wow!! this book was great :) One hell of a ride, with so many twists and turns. I didn't see any of this coming. Can't wait to find out what happens next
