j. leigh bailey is an office drone by day and the author of Young Adult and New Adult LGBT Romance by night. She can usually be found with her nose in a book or pressed up against her computer monitor. A book-a-day reading habit sometimes gets in the way of... well, everything...but some habits aren't worth breaking. She's been reading romance novels since she was ten years old. The last twenty years or so have not changed her voracious appetite for stories of romance, relationships and achieving that vitally important Happy Ever After. She's a firm believer that everyone, no matter their gender, age, sexual orientation or paranormal affiliation deserves a happy ending.

She wrote her first story at seven, which was, unbeknownst to her at the time, a charming piece of fan-fiction in which Superman battled (and defeated, of course) the nefarious X Luther. She was quite put out to be told, years later, that the character's name was actually Lex. Her second masterpiece should have been a best-seller, but the action-packed tale of rescuing her little brother from an alligator attack in the marshes of Florida collected dust for years under the bed instead of gaining critical acclaim.

Now she writes Young Adult LGBT Romance novels about boys traversing the crazy world of love, relationships and acceptance.

This was a meaty anthology and the stories ranged pretty wildly for me from DNF's to skims to enjoyable and to excellent. Which in the end balanced out for a 3 star read for me. While there were a few May-December stories a few were December-December.

An interesting read but sadly almost too much variation in my ratings for me to give it a solid recommendation.

I've read through the entire anthology, and I give it a 4 stars as a whole. There are some stories worth catching in this.

My favorite so far is the last story, "Granddad's Cup of Tea" by Any Rae Durreson, which is more or less a GFY story. Ewan is a widower who lives with his daughter and grandkids. He takes on a grandson's ditched paper route and becomes curious about an older man, Alex, who lives alone in the house on the hill. He learns through the town's grapevine that the man's 'brother' recently died, but everyone in town knew they were actually a couple. These two solitary men strike up a friendship and eventually form a relationship. I wouldn't have thought I'd be interested in a romance about two men this age, but it was really very sweet and even a little sexy. I admired the resolve with which Ewan, who'd lived his entire life as a straight man, decides to just be open about his interest in another man. And I loved the wonder Alex experienced at being "out" in public for the first time in his life after having been in a long-term closeted relationship.

I've also enjoyed "Hunting Season" by AC Valentine. The plot is 'big city boy retires to the country and falls for hunky handyman,' which, strangely, I've read a few of lately. It was fun and sweet and it worked for me. Maybe I have a handyman kink?

"Loving Again" by John Inman was a good read. Charlie's long-time partner just recently died. Charlie is deeply grieving, but he finds a note from his partner asking him to love again, and specifically picking out his next partner. The jump into the next relationship was very fast, but the author worked in enough anger and mixed feelings to make it work. It was sweet and effective.

Curtain Calls by Pinkie Rae Parker is about an older lion of the theatre who resents, and then decides to coach, a bashful young actor. It was well-written and very evocative of the London stage, which I love.

Waiting for the Light by Layla M. Wier. In this story, a man who's lost his male partner attends a spouse survivor group and meets another man who has lost his wife. They're immediately draw to each other and become friends, but the gay man is afraid to tell the other that his lost spouse was male for fear of losing the friendship. There wasn't anything particularly extraordinary about this plot, but it was a sweet story and I really enjoyed it.

Overall, I'm surprised that I like this anthology as much as I did as I'm not generally interested in romances set in the senior years (not all of these were, but some of the ones I really liked were with seniors). The other stories in the book were all fine and I enjoyed reading them, they just didn't seem particularly memorable.

There are fifteen short stories in the Snow on the Roof anthology. The theme is May/December, although some are more December/December, but at least one character is over 40-years-old, which is a wonderful change from all the young bucks we normally find in a lot of M/M books.

As with any anthology, there were stories I loved, stories I liked, and a few that just weren’t my cup of tea. But since I cannot review fifteen separate stories, I am going to pick my top four from the book, in order by rating.

Granddad’s Cup of Tea by Amy Durreson – 5 stars

A wonderful story about two elderly men finding love again after losing their spouses. Ewan and Alex are in their sixties and each has lead a full life. Ewan lives with his daughter and grandchildren, and Alex just lost his lover of many years. When Ewan helps his grandson deliver newspapers, the two men become friends, and it grows into more. A perfect, slow-building sort-of GFY story that shows that love knows no age boundaries.

Straight Shooting by Maggie Lee – 4.5 stars

Cops. Guns. Friend-With-Benefits. Everything I like in my M/M books. The sex was off-the-charts hot, and the combination that one protagonist was the other one’s gun range supervisor made the illicit nature of their relationship even steamier. The author made shooting guns sexy.

The Bodyguard’s Dilemma by Chris Scully – 4.25 stars

Logan is a 45-year-old bodyguard who is in love with a much younger, former porn star named Tyler. Now Tyler used to be a client, but after the job was done, the two men remained friends. Even though I think the age difference and Tyler’s former profession might be an issue if these two continued their relationship, I loved the chemistry between them and the hope that their love story would have a happy ending.

Hunting Season by AC Valentine – 4 stars

City boy inherits his aunt’s house in the country and when it needs repairs hires the local handyman to do the work. Immediate attraction ensues. Maybe I have a fixation on shifters and handymen? Because even though geeky guy falls for hard-working blue collar has been done before, I adored this story!

To conclude, a lovely anthology that brought tears to my eyes in some instances and in others, made me fan myself as my Kindle exploded from the hotness. Recommended.

This book was not for me and I knew it before I started.I wont judge the book cause it wont be fair to the authors. Some story in this anthology was good and I have read worse and have rated them more star because the couple were hot and dialogue sassy or pornish.I do believe everyone deserves happiness so does Mature couple and cheers to those couple who seek them out.Not making age a issue.
This one was a dedicated read on my behalf for the team scores.

I very much enjoyed this anthology of stories all featuring gay men of a certain age, who definitely still feel that lovely fire in the furnace. The stories provided a nice variety of themes, tropes and settings, and were all worth reading.

For the sake of providing a little detail, I thought I'd mention my five stand-out favourites.

Ivory Black, Flecked with White by Laylah Hunter. Most of these stories are contemporary, but this is set in Renaissance Italy. The pov character is a painter Felice; we explore his relationships with his young model Alessandro, and Felice's rich patron Lucio. The story's title and other imagery make great use of Felice's artistic eye. I really enjoyed this vivid tale of an on-going long-term love.

Curtain Calls by Pinkie Rae Parker. This featured the older actor Kitt, reluctantly discovering he's more a Prospero than a Ferdinand these days, and the new young actor Bascomb, who seems destined to plague him. I found this a fascinating story - not just for all the details of acting and actors' lives - but because I really disliked the main characters at first, but grew rather fond of them both by the end. Which is not too shabby a journey for a short story!

Hero Worship by Sam C Leonard. Perhaps one of the great things about an anthology like this is you end up reading things you otherwise wouldn't - and enjoying them! This was a fantasy tale which deals with the dire realities of the wizard Odan's life: riding in the rain, having one's food stolen by tiny Fegnacs, and continually refusing offers of marriage to everyone's eligible and not-so-eligible daughters. Just as well very few people know that Odan might be more tempted by the sons... This was lovely, despite or because of the rain-induced grumpiness!

The Way to a Fisherman's Heart by Tray Ellis. A contemporary story in which nothing very much happens beyond the connection finally made between two fishermen - but it was a darned good read. While I'm a bit of a wuss about things like catching fish, I found the setting and details here convincing and evocative, so I gritted my teeth and happily read every word.

Grandad's Cup of Tea by Amy Rae Durreson. I suspect I liked this one best, and perhaps it was last in the volume in order to finish with strength. This was a really well written piece; some of the descriptions were beautifully crafted. As one writer to another, I tips me lid. This is also a lovely story about a slow-growing friendship which becomes something more, along with a thoughtful exploration of being out (or not) in a relatively small community. Ewan's relationships with his grandchildren are definitely worth the read, as is his developing romance with Alex.

All in all: highly recommended. Not a dud story in the pack, and a refreshing change of pace for those of us who appreciate a more mature man every now and then. :-)

Loved this book immensely!

I've always been interested in adult, older people, rather than young adults and I'm happy with this anthology and its diverse, but all very enjoyable stories.

There's some good may/december romances which I always love, but I found that my real favorites here were december/december stories about finding love again after losing your soulmate for many years. Those were so heartwrenching that I cried, but at the end there's been always hope and quiet happiness and the possibility of beginning a new life even at the older age - very good message and very good execution.

And about the endings. To me in a short stories there's almost impossible to shove in a grand full-on HEA with wedding on the way :) I think the format dictates we're only getting a snippet from the character's lifes and to me all the endings were strongly hopeful without any insuperable difficulties for the MCs to reach their HEA later on, so I'm totally satisfied in this aspect.

Totally recommended!

OMG - 15 stories where at least one of the character is a bit more ...mature. Wonderful, finally the mentioning of a paunch or grey chest hair. MCs in their sixties! Did I like the book?

Oh yes, I defintely think it was a great collection of short stories and I'm going to check out some of the authors for more of them.

Nachos on Saturday by J. Leigh Bailey
Sweet comfort story, well written - 4 stars

Queening Out by Mari Donne
Exaclty what the title said - Cute older dudes queens out over a situation, runs away and needs to get found again...which of course happens - 3 stars

Granddad's Cup of Tea by Amy Durreson
Well done slow built up, a story like a candle on christmas...about coming out in your sixties and daring to try to love again - 5 stars

The Way to a Fisherman's Heart by Tray Ellis
A wonderfully, sweet and pretty little story, nothing flashy, just a gem in it's simpleness - 5 stars

No Place Like Home by Kim Fielding
Nice story, a note in a library book brings two men together...hm...3,5 stars...no ..for the one moment when Joey opens the door...defintely 4 stars.

Ivory Black, Flecked with White by Laylah Hunter
Written in Present Tense (not my thing) but a nice setting, interesting and different characters - 3 stars

Loving Again by John Inman
The reason I bought the book (yes, Inman-fan here) and did he make me cry. What I like is that you really don't know what he is writing until you read it - everything is different. I started to get wet eyes at the damn socks and cried nearly through the whole goooood story. Only complaint...a bit to insta love but hey, life is short and if anybody knows it, these two guys does. - 5 stars

Full Circle by Rhidian Brenig Jones
Honest, a bit uncomfortable/detached, former teacher/pupil "not relationship" finally comes together, good - 3 stars

Straight Shooting by Maggie Lee
Okaay....also not a hit for me, shooting instructor (marine) fucks his trainee...fuck buddies or relationship. I felt detached and didn't really got to like the MCs - 2 stars

Hero Worship by Sam C. Leonhard
Actually - the love story happens a bit rushed at the end. But it is situated around a wizard in a world with dwarves and other magical creatures and the wizard itself is such a cute grumpy guy - I loved him. May/very december romance - 4 stars

Curtain Calls by Pinkie Rae Parker
May/december romance, it was not bad but it didn't do much for me - 2 stars

The Bodyguard's Dilemma by Chris Scully
Cute, funny, may/december with pushy, a bit broken young man and a very alpha older one - 4 stars

Picture This by Dottie Stratton & Linda James
This one I liked - man comes back after a lifetime to finally get together with the love of his life. Well constructed conflict and lovable MCs - 5 stars

Hunting Season by AC Valentine
Comfort story, well written, good MCs - 4 stars

Waiting for the Light by Layla M. Wier
I liked it, it had a strong feeling. Two old men meet at a senior spouse survivor's meeting. They become friends. Neither is "out"...4 stars

4 stars. For the most part, I enjoyed the majority of these stories. Though I was anticipating May/December romances for all of them, there was surprisingly few of those. Most of the male leads are over 50 and so are their partners.

Hunting Season by AC Valentine – 3.25 stars: Really liked Carson and how oblivious he was.

Curtain Calls by Pinkie Rae Parker – 3.5 stars: An “old” beast actor and his young rival. Drama!

Straight Shooting by Maggie Lee – 3.5 stars: I actually liked this one a lot. Would have been perfect with shorter sex scenes.

I was intrigued by the idea of romances involving older adults. So much is written with young perfect people as the main characters where it is all youth and the future stretches out before them. These stories touched on relationships once one is past the youthfulness and bar scenes. Some were May/December but others were not. My favorites in the anthology included Grand Dad's cup of Tea by Amy Rae Durreson, Waiting for the Light by Layla M. Weir and Loving Again by John Inman. All of these involve people who have known great love and what it is to be alone and find love again. Hero Worship by San C Leonhard was a surprise as it was set in a fantasy genre.

Over all I enjoyed all of the stories, these were just some of my favorites. I would like to see more stories involving people at other stages of their lives than youthful twenty somethings. We do not stop falling in love, being in love or feeling passion just because we are older.

3.6 rounded up to a 4 star rating. More winners than losers in this one. I skipped one story entirely b/c I didn't like the voice. That said, the older (like...OLDER grandpas at times...) H theme was surprisingly interesting and passionate. My favorites were probably "The Way to a Fisherman's Heart," "Straight Shooting," "The Bodyguard's Dilemma," and "Granddad's Cup of Tea."

Overall, they were mostly feel-good stories that I wouldn't mind revisiting. A couple didn't work for me, but that's what you have to be prepared for with an anthology.

I don't usually like anthologies. The stories are just too short to satisfy. But, I LOVED this one. The stories are different genre, different POVs...but ALL extremely satisfying. And I must advise that you read them all, because the last story is definitely my favorite. I love ending a book with a goofy smile on my face.

A better than average anthology that I slowly read over a few days and read other books in between. No single story stands out but conversely there were none that I disliked. I enjoyed the ones with both older people and liked how they took their time and let friendship grow before jumping. My favourite would have been the last story which was also the longest so had longer to develop - Grandad's Cup Of Tea - a story of 2 over sixties who meet when one is helping his granddaughter deliver the papers.

This 15 story anthology centers on men with "Snow on the Roof", all over age 40 and many quite a bit older. Most were imaginative and detailed and packed a lot of story into a short story. Some of the authors addressed sensitive issues such as bereavement for a husband or partner and others featured MC's who were in their 60's and still very vital. Of all of the stories my favorites were:

"Picture This" --Separated by Whit's angry, bigoted father when they were 18, these two MC's get another chance to be together when the old man dies, but it's 30 years later. Whit returns to his hometown and seeks out Daniel, who now owns a custom chopper business. Not wanting to forgive Whit at first, Dan finally agrees to hear him out. When Whit explains why he really left town, Dan finds forgiveness and they are able to start to look to their future. This was very well written with a heart-wrenching storyline and great character depth for a short story.

"The Bodyguard's Dilemma" -- Logan is a bodyguard celebrating his 45th birthday and bemoaning both his age and the fact that he still has no life partner 10 years after he divorced his wife and came out of the closet. He secretly loves Tyler, a 25 year old former porn star, who he befriended 3 years ago when hired to be Tyler's bodyguard. Out to dinner with his boss, Logan gives up hope of hearing from Tyler then finally gets drunk and agrees to be set up on a blind date. He also agrees to break off his friendship with Tyler since it's going nowhere. Of course, nothing works out the way he's planned, and Tyler actually has quite a nice birthday surprise for him. The story was engaging and uplifting with a hopeful promise for their future.

"Waiting for the Light" – Don and James join a bereavement group shortly after the death of James' husband and Don's wife. James doesn't reveal that he is grieving a husband and feels guilty about that but he needs the support so he continues to attend. They quickly find they have common interests and become friends, meeting for coffee at a local diner after every meeting. Months later, James finally reveals to Don that his grief is for a man. Don then confesses that he and his wife had an open marriage and his affairs were with men. I didn't think I'd like the story since it started with each of the men in so much grief, however it was a well written and emotionally intense story and enough time passed before the two finally started to have a more loving relationship. The ending was very upbeat and positive.

"Granddad's Cup of Tea" – Ewan is a widower helping his granddaughter deliver newspapers when he meets Alex whose "brother" just died. As they walk away, his granddaughter tells him that they weren't brothers, just men who lived together. Ewan takes the chance presented the next day to befriend Alex and they ultimately form a long lasting friendship. After about a year, Ewan reveals that he once had a brief affair with a boy when they were teens. Alex sees this as hope since they've become close and he has come to rely on Ewan's company. At a seaside town, where they go to spend a quiet day, Ewan and Alex finally reveal their feelings for one another and take the chance that love can happen twice in their lifetimes. This one was very sweet and heartwarming and featured much older MC's with a nice HEA.

I also really enjoyed reading "Nachos on Saturday", "Hunting Season", "Loving Again", "The Way to a Fisherman's Heart" and "Queening Out". All were well written romantic stories, some very poignant and heartwarming.

I highly recommend this anthology to those who might enjoy reading about romance between older men who may be turning gray or no longer have a perfect physique, but definitely have much more than good looks to offer a partner.

In general I liked this anthology. I think my main issue was inherent to anthologies: the stories have to be short and in this case we are talking about 15 stories which I thought were perhaps 5 too many. It however gave me an opportunity to sample the writing of most of the authors, as i had not read anything from most of them.

Here are some of the stories I liked:

Granddad's Cup of Tea by Amy Rae Durreson
This was kind of a poignant story. It brings together two older men. One had spent his life living in the closet with his lover but to the community they were brothers. This broke my heart. He befriends the other guy who lost his wife 2 years ago. Don't want to call this a GFY story because the guy had experimented when he was really young.

Picture This by Dottie Stratton & Linda James and Full Circle by Rhidian Brenig Jones
Both of these stories kind of build the story similarly: guys met in school, separated for many years and want to get back to their first love.

Loving Again by John Inman
This was my favorite. Both MCs come together after losing their partners. In that sense Waiting for the Light by Layla M. Wier also has a similar premise.

Hero Worship by Sam C. Leonhard
This was the only fantasy story in the bunch of an long-living wizard (hate to call him old) who is not really looking but finds someone.

Hunting Season by AC Valentine
Umm, maybe a tie on my favorite story. I really liked this one too. NYC author moves to Vermont after inheriting his aunt's house and finds love.

Let me just say that this anthology was a wonderful collection of stories. It was the very first one I have ever read all the way through and now I’m thinking I need to buy and read more of them

This one had many different kinds of themes but they all shared one thing in common, as stated in the blurb, the older man :-) 15 stories about losing love, gaining love or finding love.

I’d love to be able to sit here and write what I thought about each one but I’d rather have you read it for yourself, and I won’t spend a lot of time getting into every detail of each story but I will share a few of my favorites.

“Picture This” by Dottie Stratton & Linda James:
Whit and Dan were dating during high school but when Whits dad sees him with the other boy all hell breaks loose and Whit is sent away. After many years, Whit comes home and all he wants is to see Dan again. Dan doesn’t understand what happened all those years ago, all he knows is he’s still hurting and still very much in love with the other man. When they finally come face to face and the air gets cleared they finally get there happily ever after. This was a fantastic read and my favorite of all of them. I would love to see more stories from these two authors.

Average rating: 3.8

This is an anthology with 15 mostly contemporary stories (one has a fantasy setting, though!) about mature main characters in their forties to sixties. I was surprised by the consistently high quality of the writing, especially in the second half of the book. Despite the shortness of the stories, many of the characters were well developed and nicely described, allowing you a true glimpse into their lives and into their hearts. What's more, they felt authentic and likeable to me and I'd love to hear more about a few of them!

Anthologies are always a mixed bag but this is a cut above. I loved that this was focused on older men - from 40's on up and that it covered so much ground. There was always a hopeful ending - if not a HEA exactly then the promise of one. I liked the lengths of the different stories and found myself enjoying this in a sort of "sip a little" way - read a story or two daily. That way they were just the right length to fit in amongst other daily activities but I was not having to "start" a new set of characters multiple times in a day.

A mixed bag. Some stories took too long to get to the romance part. In such a short word count, I wanted the lovin' to start already (and I'm not talking about sex). It took too long to introduce the second MC in some cases.

And the harping on the ages, was a bit much in some of the stories, even though I know it was the theme of the book. Who knew that 42-45 year olds were so ancient?

My favorites were: "Hunting Season," "Loving Again," "Picture This" and "Granddad's Cup of Tea."

I'm on a role with anthologies this month. Usually I can't find any that I really enjoy, and so far I have read three that were pretty great all around.

I don't read a lot of stories where the MCs are older guys, but I almost always enjoy them when I find 'em. And this anthology had some really great stories in it. I'm glad I ended up buying it, because I have a feeling I'll be going back to read a few of them again.

I think this has been one of the better anthologies I've read. I loved reading about the older guys getting their true love. Most in the 40s, but there was even one couple in their 60s. Probably about half of them found love with a younger man, but there were a few that were the same age. It was a nice mix, with a bit of fantasy and historical mixed in to the contemporary. Very enjoyable read.

this was a hard read. all the stories are wonderful, but the subject matter leads to a lot of loss and wistfulness mixed in with the romance. several stories made me tear up something fierce.

Nachos on Saturday by J. Leigh Bailey
3,5 stars On his forty three birthday day Duncan gets Felix as a present. The story was really too short but I liked the characters and the feeling of hope I got.

Queening Out by Mari Donna
2,75 stars. It wasn't for me. It missed a lot in the chemistry and feelings.

Granddad's Cup of Tea by Amy Rae Durreson
3,5 stars. Maybe the more complete short.

The Way to a Fisherman's Heart by Tray Ellis
3,75 stars. This story was just a little bite but so sweet.

No Place Like Home by Kim Fielding
3 stars. I felt the characters and enjoyed the writing but I want more.

Ivory Black, Flecked with White by Laylah Hunter
3,75 stars. I liked this short historical story. Well done.

Loving Again by John Inman
4,25 stars. This story made me cry. It was really well written and full of emotions.

Full Circle by Rhidian Brenig Jones
Adam fell in love with his teacher Rick twenty five years ago. Now it's finally time for them to be together. 3 stars. Sweet but not so engaging. But I liked this second chance at love.

Straight Shooting by Maggie Lee
3,75 good writing and engaging characters. The chemistry was there from the start.

Hero Worship by Sam C. Leonhard
3,5 stars. Interesting fantasy story. One I wish to know more about.

Curtain Calls by Pinkie Rae Parker
2 stars. Not for me. I rushed through it cause it was really hard to get to me.

The Bodyguard's Dilemma by Chris Scully
5 stars. This was simply perfect. It caught me from the start. So well done! I have to read more by the author.

Picture This by Dottie Stratton & Linda James
4 stars. Great story. I soon connected with the characters. Both well defined for a short like this one.

Hunting Season by AC Valentine
Carson is a writer who just inherited a falling house from an almost unknown aunt in the middle of nowhere. He needs someone who can help him with the renovations. Here comes the young Travis.
3,5 stars. Well written and engaging but the relationship between MCs wasn't really explored.

Waiting for the Light by Layla M. Wier
4 stars. So emotional. And full of hope. Loved it.

Really enjoying this so far! So far my favorite story is "Hunting Season" by AC Valentine, I really loved the characters and writing.

I also really liked "Picture This" and loved, loved "The Bodyguard's Dilemma." I would love to read more about Logan and Tyler.

Just finished this and aside from the already mentioned stories, I loved "Granddad's Cup of Tea"...just a beautifully written story with great characters and storytelling. Overall, I really loved this series...a good mix of may/December and December/December and I really liked this anthology!
