Suspicion and conflict abound as four women come to terms with the past as well as the present. Mingled within those uncertainties is the passion each woman feels for her partner.
Upon learning that she has a sister, Lauren Walker is desperate to find the woman and reconcile with her. The sudden need for a kidney donor sets Lauren and her partner Maggie on a quest to find her sister Harriet Aristides.
Harriet (Harry) Aristides is skeptical of the sudden news of gaining a sibling. There's a catch a long lost mother. That fact alone sets off warning bells for Harry for she knows nothing is ever what it seems. The question then becomes, what is Lauren's real agenda.
Caught in the middle of this drama is Nicky Ralston who is a long time friend of Lauren Walker and Harriet's partner. Added to the mix are Lauren's mother, Victoria and Harriet's uncle Harry. The bitter triangle that spans forty years over Harriet comes to a boiling point that affects everybody's lives.
Does anyone have what it takes to achieve the first tentative steps to atonement that are forged with compassion, love and understanding.

Two pairs of lovers...passionate, dynamic, and idiosyncratic...from book one are going to be linked at the hip in this sequel pooling their enormous talents to address the rapidly failing health of a shared family member. This time-intensive race to find an answer and then implement it spun off scores of volatile and sometimes confusingly inconsistent yet understandable reactions from some of the women. During these moments it was practically like surviving within a pressure cooker. Emotions are racing up and down maxed out levels from all manner of inputs. I was so drawn into the maelstrom and either 110 percent in accord or ready to kick butt big time. It was exhausting yet exhilarating. I think it is essential to read book one first so the motivations of the four main characters are relatively understandable. Extraordinary!
Dr. Lauren Walker and Margaret Sullivan, Lori and Maggie, are deeply in love. However, Lori's focus on getting to meet and convince her older half-sister to help their mother is clearly the primary story line. Maggie and her hidden past plus deadly enemies is a strong second tier theme and a fascinating counterpoint. These two certainly have their feet firmly planted on terra firma which only makes the near celestial levels to which their love affair elevates them simply mind-boggling. When Maggie describes to Lori's parents how she feels about her, I nearly wept in astonishment at the transcendental heights she described. Supremely breathtaking!
Harriet Aristides and Nichola Ralston, Harry and Nicky, are very different in both temperament and physical stature. Nicky may be the shorter of the two, but her inner strength, remarkable ability to see things from every angle, plus an all encompassing heart, makes her practically dwarf Harry in many respects. Yet Nicky is very human and when her soul is bruised I could not help but weep with her. However, it is Harry's extraordinary epiphany about her love for Nicky that sent shock waves through my very being. In fact it is Harry time and again who shakes everyone's equilibrium driving folks and myself into total conniption fits at times or towards an overwhelming desire to wrap my arms around her to heal her tumultuous pain. Astounding!
I positively adored how much is going on in this book and at such staggering levels of intensity. Plus these are four notably intelligent women, who on occasion function or perceive things like blithering idiots. That is so human! Apart from their accomplishments and credentials, they fail and flounder like most people due on occasion. That is so delightfully grounding and I truly appreciated that element in these two books. The situations presented were super fascinating. The characters were so rich and multi-dimensional. This series is by and large an amazing treasure. I give it my highest recommendation and I really would love a third book to find out more about these four outstanding women. Bravissimo!
