I'm sorry but the h in this sorry is pitiful.

This is a book about two people who have known each other their entire life. H noticed the h in HS but denied anything between them because he did not want a distraction from his career goals. Lawyer, Prosecuter, judge. I guess people who are judges are not married and have families. From Senior of HS to 10 years, the H and h have been having just a sexual relationship whenever he wants to see her. He also dates other women to make sure the h knows that it's not a relationship. The h is always available to him. The h is a lawyer too but for the defense.

SPOILERS:

After the H realizes that the sex is too intimate (he spent the whole night with her), he stops calling her and starts dating another woman (flaunting her around). 2 months goes by and the h realizes she's pregnant. She faints in front of the H and he adamant that she goes to the doctor, but she knows she's pregnant and tells him. He is all surprised but happy. They spend the day together and get baby furniture. Then he says he'll call her later. He doesn't. Two weeks later, she goes to confront him at his office. She asks him about their future and he states that he cannot marry her because it would not be far to her since his career comes first. She tells him off and tells him to leave her alone. Also mentions that she will raise their child alone. That night she starts to bleed and is rushed to the hospital. She has high blood pressure and the stress might cause her to lose the baby. The H comes to the hospital and cries that he would be better, but still no marriage. It quickly goes through the h's pregnancy. The H visits her every once in awhile but still dating Hot Blonde. The h goes to labor early and he is there for the birth. Right after the baby is born, he's in love with the baby girl and he tells the h he will see her the next day. The h mentions something about that night and he says he has dinner plans with the OW. WTF!!!!

The h states that he can see the baby but don't bother with visiting her. Another 3 months go by and the H realizes that he really loves the h and the baby so he's going to ask the h to marry him. Their is another guy who's been in love with the h since HS and he told her that he would marry her and raise her daughter. The h doesn't love him but sees him only as a friend. But after all this with the H, she decides to marry the friend. The same night the H was going to propose, the h and other guy announces their engagement. The H decides that he will still go after the h. (The OW dumps the H because she doesn't want to be second best to the h and the baby). The guy friend also realizes that the h has not even given him a real kiss. When he asks the h about that she says kiss her and when he goes to kiss her, she kind of shutters. The friend is like "am I that replusive to you." She's continues on that she loves him like a friend. The friend breaks off the engagement and tells her that the H still wants her. This gives the h hope again.

At another event where the H won some kind of election, the H invites the h to see the house he just bought. Takes her there after the party and proposes and she says yes. OMG!!!

Unbelievable- and not in a good way. I teetered off-and-on the fence (early on in the story) of giving this two stars, because the storyline is kind of cute. But "kind of" and "cute" descriptions do not merit high marks in the case of this "book". The Ten Year Affair had no reviews when I purchased, and I am always eager to give new books a try- one thing I've learned is you never know when you might find that hidden gem. Well, I am here to encourage you to KEEP LOOKING.

Poor plot, lines that read like a bad porn, and horrible characters. There was absolutely no believable connections among the characters- and they were supposed to have known one another since kindergarten! Writing is inconsistent; characters use one another's names in nearly every sentence of dialogue (we know Ian was speaking to Alex because they were the only two people in the room- it was not necessary for him to use her name EVERY time he spoke with her, and vice versa); flashbacks were not evident until you were well into the middle of them, and even then, the characters in high school spoke in the same manner they did in the "present". The "heroine" (if you could call her that) was extremely weak- how are we supposed to believe that a top defense attorney would act in the wishy-washy way she did? She repeatedly allowed herself to be used for sex for ten years by a guy she despises, then suddenly realizes she actually loves him and falls into a "break-up" depression like a love-sick teenager. If the characters would have had more depth, this MAY have been plausible; but as it stands, NO.

These are just a few of the flaws. I could go on and on, but why dwell? I will simply chalk this up as a waste of time, and move on

I'm a bit torn about this book. On the one hand, I liked the story well enough. It's about real passion, the kind that make you do things over and over, no matter how much they hurt you and how much you know you shouldn't do them, just because you can't help yourself. L'amour fou. And that was interesting.
On the other hand, all characters made me want to pull my hair out at one point or another of the story. The hero is a real arriviste jerk and I thought his epiphany was too little, too late. The heroine is seemingly strong and independant, yet she's at the hero's beck and call most of the book, and that just made me want to shake some sense into her. The heroine's best friend, Peter, acted like a lovesick puppy, following the heroine around no matter how many kicks he gets. Even the grandmother annoyed me from time to time, with her constant interference.

Nonetheless, I would have given the book a 3 stars review if not for 2 things :

- the permanent POV switching : I prefer when books offer alternative point of views, but here the POVs kept switching almost every sentence or paragraph. That was confusing and became quickly tiresome.

- some scenes really need editing. For example, in one scene, the heroine changes name, from "Alex" to "Julia". Her father too, from "Alexander" to "Grant". Minor details but when repeated too often they make the reading less pleasant.

Love makes us stronger but also weaker.

Alexandra is in love with Ian, and has been for ten years now, having with him an on-and-off again relationship.
Ian places his career before Alexandra and even loving her he keeps breaking her heart since he doesn't wanna committ. He thinks that his dedication to reach his goal to become a judge will make him a bad husband and father. Not having time to create and nurture his family like it'd rightly deserve.
Alexandra takes him back every time he decides to hook up again since it's Ian calling the shots.
To some Alexandra may appear pathetic, a doormat, a weak woman who can't stand for herself but she's in love, deeply in love.
Love makes us stronger but also weaker. Not all of us are able to move on and get over the person we love even if this one keeps hurting us. And there's no rule that says that a woman to have self-respect have to be strong and move on. Every one is accountable only to herself/himself for how they wanna act. Not saying I'm not a bit mad at the way Ian treats Alexandra but the love they feel pulls them together more than how it keeps them apart.
And then this story, the title well explains this, is about a ten year affair so you may get how the things are gonna be.
The book is well written and has kept my interest live.
Maybe I'd have liked to understand better the driving forces behind Ian's strong desire to have success and reach his goals.

As a woman I felt insulted when reading this book.

The female lead had no pride, common sense, character... She had zero redeeming qualities.

The male lead was self absorbed, selfish and childish.

The plot made no sense. Especially when it gets to the part where he is running for a promotion in a public office and instead of marrying his baby's mum ( which is what any PR person would tell him to do if he wants to have a chance at winning), keeps on whining that his career is the first thing on his life and that he won't marry her (and we are suppose to believe he is not ashamed of her, but doing it for her sake and side with him... hell not even my great grandma would have believed that one over a century ago).

DNF. Really I have to feel something in common with the heroine. I have nothing. She has no dignity. She's the kind of female that I cannot understand. How can someone have such a low self-esteem is really impossible to understand for me.

So I put this among my give-ups and you will have to make up your own mind. (This sentence is not mine but from Sabrina and I thank her for it!)

I just think that this is somewhat-woman-stupidity & I hate it. I didn't like the story line. Better improve on thinking of a real great story on how readers will be hooked into the story. It seems that it was narrated by a kid (exclude the x-rated scenes).

OMG. This novel is unbelievable and I mean it in a bad way. I think the title says it all - The TEN freaking (sic) Year AFFAIR. (Emphasis added)
