This collection of essays is critical for anyone trying to listen to the words of the black arts movement. Gayle does a great job collecting as many voices as he can on subjects ranging from music to literary criticism. From Alain Locke to Ishmael Reed, this collection proves that the black aesthetic has many voices and formulations despite today's conception of that movement as monolithic.
