Sassy Winthrop has just turned twenty-one. But instead of being a time of fun, parties, and courting, it has been a time of loss, grief, and transitions. With the death of her beloved father, a kindly country vicar, Sassy is left not only without immediate family, but she must also leave the only home she has ever known to make room for the new vicar. And if that weren’t enough, she is also going through transition as her powers of light magic are completed.
When a friend of her late mother arranges for Sassy to become a tutor at Netherby Halls, a boarding school for genteel orphaned girls, it seems the perfect solution. But as she makes the journey to Netherby she meets the man who has been making love to her in her dreams…the irresistible Marquis of Dartmour. And that is only the beginning.
For finds things at Netherby are not what they seem, and neither is the handsome marquis. Unsure whom to trust, Sassy has to find her way through a maze of evil and magic.
**note: this is an updated version of an earlier novel written as Claudette Williams. The updated versions of Claudy's Claudette Williams titles are more sexually explicit than the original versions.
Netherby Halls by Claudy Conn In 1815 we find Sassy Winthrop in Sutton Village. The small English village where she has grown up as the vicar's daughter. She has lost all she loves in the past few years and must now depend on a family friend for help. There is more to Sassy than her heart stopping beauty and she must always control her hidden secrets. There is also much more to Sassy’s new home at Netherby Hall, much more than just a home for the orphan daughters of the Gentry.
The Eighth Marquis of Dartmour, Justin Dartmour, is known as a rake, a rogue and even a libertine. There are other words to describe him but the people around him are not aware of those. When he has an odd hallucination while seeing a beautiful young woman across the street one day, he is never quite the same. Especially when their paths cross again and again.
I really enjoyed this story. There were quite a few twists and turns. Who to trust or not trust, missing people and clandestine meetings in the dead of night. It has a bit of the dark side of life as well, the darkness that comes from greed. And of course romance. **Sexual content and mild language http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
REVIEW We are in Sutton Village, England and its the year of 1815.
Enter Sassy Winthrop a 21 yr old who is a white witch just coming into her powers. The only persons who know this are her mother who passed away 2 years ago and her now ailing/dying father The Vicar. Sassy keeps having vivid dreams of a man with hair as dark as the night sky and eyes so blue. She doesn't know who the man is or why she is dreaming of him at first. She sees him before she moves away and runs the other way.
After Sassy's father passes away she has to move in with her mothers best friend and it is here where Sassy takes on a teaching position at Netherby Halls where things are very evil. So now Sassy must not only protect herself but the girls she teaches at the school. Has her powers strengthened enough and will she know how to use them?
Soon Sassy discovers the name of the man who is in her visions is none other than Justin Dartmour. She wants to run away again but something pulls her to Justin. Sassy has heard what others have said about Justin Dartmour that he is a womanizer. Can she grab and hold on to Justin's Heart?
I just love Claudy Conn's books and this like the many before it I have read just grabs me til I am done reading it. I would highly recommend any of her books !! Yes there is some sexual content but she uses it all gracefully in her books !
This enchanting tale has it all. Claudy never stops amazing me with her wonderful tales. Claudy's books always deliver and fulfill. It doesn't matter what genre you prefer she has a way of combining genres that make you wow in amazement. Especially this book. I love historical romance but when there is a paranormal twist to it, it makes it even better for me. Its one of my favorite genres for sure, the best of both worlds.
This tale has love, lust, passion, magic, suspense, mystery, mayhem and murder. This book kept me glued to my kindle from beginning to end. I just couldn't seem to put it down.
Sassy, a somewhat naive beauty is left parent less. She is confused about what is going on inside her. She is trying to make sense of everything happening to her. Seeing the man that appears in her dreams on the street one day changes everything. Will she ever be the same?
Justin, a handsome marquis with secrets of his own sees the beauty who comes to him in his dreams. He knows right then that things have changed and he needs more of her.
When Sassy, and Justin finally meet sparks fly and they cannot deny what they feel. The mystery starts, so hold on tight because you are in for a delight!!!!
Claudy Conn gives us just the right amount of background to each character. I often find myself bored when an author goes on and on about a characters background but that never happens to me with Claudy's characters.
I love Claudy's paranormal series and I love her historicals, so when I saw that she had released a book that was a historical romance with paranormal elements, I knew I had to read it! Once again, she did not disappoint. This book has mystery, romance, suspense, and magic. I love Sassy. She is a strong and independent woman. Life may not have dealt her the cards when would have wanted, but she makes the best of them and ends up finding herself at Netherby Hall where, because of her magical abilities, she senses the evil that is ever present there. Add to this her overwhelming and confusing feelings for the man of her actual dreams, who happens to be far above her station in life and may have secrets of his own, and you are in for a fun read.
I LOVED this book and I would give it 7 stars if I could. I fell in love with this story, from the moment it started. How can you go wrong with a historical romance with a paranormal twist..
I adored Sassy and absolutely fell in love with the "dreamy" Marquis. This story pulled me in from the beginning and I loved the twists and turns that made this an incredible story.
Again Claudy Conn gives us a tale you can’t not fall in love with. Sassy Winthrop is our main women; of course, she’s lost everything in the last couple years; her mother and father. From there she heads the Netherby Hall after stopping at the location her father wished her to go. We have the Marquis (how fun a word for me to say) who appears to have visions of our dear Sassy. He brings the… amusement to the novel. That’s exactly what was needed. With magic and hallucinations we see a merging of two characters as they fall for each other. And with some dark forces we’re given a mind heaving novel.
while i loved the idea, this book is ridiculous and does not make the most of what could of been an outstanding storyline\series. the story is very straightforward i feel like i could of told you exactly what was going to happen nearly from the start, and on top of that i believe the author read a Victorian dictionary and decided to throw in weird diction of the times voraciously and without thought. then there is the repetitive dream sequence which gets more irritating every time its re written. in the end while i love a trashy romance every once and a while, and all there funny foibles this one left me cold and disappointed though it does get an extra star for the decent heroine
“This is an imperfect world, love, and justice is rarely distributed equally.” Twenty-one-year-old Sassandra Winthrop is faced with a conundrum. In less than two years, both her parents die, leaving her alone and soon homeless. Her father was the local vicar of Sutton Village and a new vicar is due to arrive any day and lay claim to the parsonage she had always called home. Sassy is offered shelter at Tanderlay Place, and the protection of Lady Margate. Unfortunately, Sassy soon finds herself fighting off the lewd and improper advances of a libertine, her son Sir John. Her quandary appears to disappear with Lady Margate’s suggestion that she travel to the seaside town of Bristol and to Netherby Halls, a seminary for young, well-born, orphaned or abandoned ladies. Sassy, as the granddaughter of the Earl of Wollington, would fit well in the staff of this charitable institution. One possible detriment to her success as a tutor in this gentle-bred establishment is that Sassy Winthrop is a witch. Twenty-seven-year-old Lord Justin Dartmour, 8th Earl of Dartmour, has a special and unexplainable bond with the raven-haired, emerald-eyed Miss Winthrop. From their first sighting on the streets of Sutton Village, they were both simultaneously mentally thrust into a steamy erotic rendezvous, void of all thought and free will. He too has the dark powers at his beck and call. They are destined to be together but Sassy refuses to surrender her control and refuses to go gently into the night. With nary a twitch of the nose and no wand of holly wood and phoenix feather, this witch and warlock, destined to each other by the mystical powers of magic, embark on a quest to find the dark secrets hidden behind the doors of Netherby Halls. After reading the prelude, I felt sure that the author would plunge directly into the dark depths of carnal and hedonistic pleasures, leaving little time or thought for a storyline to form. It was an erroneous assumption. The author, Claudy Conn, has enticed the reader with a proverbial carrot and dangled it throughout the book. “All good things come to those who wait.” She has succeeded in mixing mystery, intrigue, dark magic, and sexual desire into a cohesive whole and spiriting the reader back to the Georgian England of 1815. Sassandra Winthrop is the perfect heroine with just enough sass and spirit, to counteract her inherent limpidness and virtuousness. This story has that je ne sais quoi and I feel sure it will delight a wide reading audience.
This one threw me. I wasn’t expecting magic in a historical romance novel. As someone who loves fantasy, it was a lovely surprise. There wasn’t an explanation for it, however. There was no background information for why magic existed or why those who had magic had it. While it wasn’t necessary to enjoy the story, I would have enjoyed the explanation. The only issue I did have with it is that I felt that the author used it to further the plot instead of relying on other devices.
I liked the novel. However, there were multiple confusing features. First of all, it was hard to gauge the characters’ personalities because they were inconsistent. There was a mystery to be solved so the characters changed their demeanor depending on who they were interacting with. The author did not let us in on their line of thinking, however. It wasn’t until the end when all the pieces came together that we were able to understand their motives and actions.
Secondly, having to keep reading that “there was something amiss at Netherby Halls” became tedious and annoying after the second time. Once would have been enough. Once a chapter was just redundant. I would say shows us that something is wrong instead of just telling us, but the author did both making it further repetitive. It is unnecessary to show that something is amiss and then state blatantly that “something was seriously wrong at Netherby Halls!”
But indeed something was wrong at Netherby Halls and commend the author for making it horrific. I appreciate her using something dark besides the typical pirating, stealing, what have you.
Overall, I enjoyed the novel. Despite its aggravations, it was a good novel. I liked the lead couple and the story was interesting. If you like a good plot to go with your historical romance, this is definitely for you.
It's a great idea but wasn't delivered well in my opinion.
This book was a bit clunky to me. The way the characters spoke seemed a bit silly at times and the plot jumps with little to no explanation between. I found myself wishing for more information about the main characters and their individual back stories. There's no real reason for me to care about these two or if they end up together. I just wish there was more to it.
It was good, but to tell the truth, I think the whole magic thing (with the H being a warlock and the h a witch) was unnecessary. I think the story would have worked better without it, there was plenty to keep readers entertained, what with both the MC and a SC, the whole prostitution ring, the shady schoolmistress and the OM being one of the villains, so that all the magic ring nonsense wasn't needed.
Just my opinion.

It is an OKAY read but then I seldom like paranormal though I have read quite a few (and quite liked them in fact). Maybe it is something else, I can not pinpoint exactly. Words and phraseology matter specially in periods of this genre.
Well that was an unexpectedly good read. I thought it was just another historical romance, but was very pleasantly surprised by the addition of the paranormal aspect. And there was also a gothic overtone as well. Nicely done!

This was an interesting read. A historical with PNR elements. Or is it a PNR set in historical times? Either way, I enjoyed it.
I liked the interaction between Justin, Marquis of Dartmour and Sassy. Their banter was entertaining and added to the tension that was obvious between them. Some interesting things come to light regarding Justin as the story plays out. Sassy is naive and though it seems like she knows what's going on with her, at the same times, she doesn't really know. This is a tad bit confusing to the reader as one minute she is 100% full aware that things are occurring due to her abilities and she knows what they are and a few pages laters, something else occurs and she's wishing she knew more about her gifts.
I wish the author would have provided her readers with a bit more background information about Sassy's powers. Sassy is a White Witch, but she hardly uses her power throughout the book. There is talk of the powers, but no usage of it in a way that would assist to move the story along. There was this instant "connection" between the Hero and Heroine and the why that is is extremely interesting. I wish the author would have focused more on that and their courtship instead of making the 'mystery' and those causing the issue be more in the forefront.
Narrator Review: I "read" "Netherby Halls" as an audio book and while I enjoyed the story, I had a hard time following as the narrator didn't differentiate between characters or the narration. This part of the reason I didn't fall in love with the story. I don't need to be entertained by the narrator and have them use different voices for each character, there does need to be some differences in order to be able to follow the story. Also, at times, she narrated without any punctuation marks. There were a few times where she missed a period or comma and it felt/sounded like a run-on sentence.
Overall, it was a quick read/listen and it had an interesting premise.
Netherby Halls is a wonderfully written romantic story with a paranormal twist, something you rarely find in a Historical Romance. Claudy takes you back to 1815 and the more you read the more you fall in love with the story.
Sassy Winthrop just turned 21 years old, but instead of celebrating she is grieving over the loss of her father. She has lost everything she holds dear her mother and now her father, she must also move away from the only home she’s known and move in with her mother’s best friend to make way for the new county vicar. Sassy is also struggling with coming into her powers as a white witch.
When Sassy take’s on a teaching position at Netherby Halls is when things start to get really interesting. The walls of the school are filled with a great evil, one that Sassy must overcome to not only save herself but the girls in the school as well. But that is not all Sassy is faced with, she must also face The Eighth Marquis of Dartmour, Justin Dartmour who she seems to have visions of, not to mention she keeps running into him when all she wants to do is getaway.
I loved Sassy as the main character. She really lives up to her name in this book; she is also a very strong woman who refuses to back down. The back and forth between Sassy and The Marquis is pretty funny at times because they are both so stubborn.
Claudy I must say is one of my very favorite Historical Romance authors because not only her books so well written and thought out, but she really knows how to capture your attention throughout the whole book. I highly recommend reading not only this book but all of her books as well.
A PLACE AS SINISTER AS FULL OF MAGIC..., June 7, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Netherby Halls (Kindle Edition)
When Sassy and Justin, Marquis of Dartmour met for the very first time, it was magic. Both were struck with an overpowering connection, they each knew they've met and have made love, and they have... in each others dreams.
When Sassy's father passed away she had no choice but to seek an employment and found a post as a teacher at Netherly Halls. At first everything seemed to be normal until Sassy discovered some mysterious mean looking men being admitted in secretly in the dead of night by the headmistress. The knowledge of a missing former teacher before her and her suspicion of the headmistress had Sassy prowling in the halls whenever she hears or sees unusual occurrence that eventually put her directly in the path of danger and only her magic can save her.
Justin was on a mission himself, to try to find out what happened to his friends daughter who was a teacher at Netherly Halls, disappeared and never to be seen again.
Netherby Halls...a place that whispers something evil lurking around yet full of magic and erotic dreams so vivid it seems so real.
Sassy, a white witch, Justin, Marquis of Dartmour, a warlock with dark powers, together they have made it their mission to discover the mystery that surrounds Netherly Halls. This is a romantic love story that spells evil, mystery and danger...where nothing seems to be what they are.
Sassy is a young woman who has lost both of her parents just as she comes in to her white witch powers. Her mother's family has disowned her and her father was the local Vicar. Upon his passing she is forced to give up the only home she has ever known to live with a well to do friend of the family. While the move looks good, her guardian's son is a pervert who has his eyes set on Sassy meanwhile, Sassy is plagued with dreams of a handsome man who makes her feel more than she has ever felt before. When Sassy meets this dream stranger on the road sparks fly.
Sassy knows that she must find a job to supplement her income and is able to become a tutor at Netherby Halls. Everything at Netherby halls screams evil. There are some bad things going on here, but how can Sassy walk out on the girls who need her the most?
A handsome Marquis with a plan of his own soon takes notice of Sassy, but then again she has been haunting his dreams on a regular basis. Will he be able to save her from the evil that surrounds Netherby Halls?
This is an awesome book from Claudy Conn, that keeps the reader engaged in the story from start to finish! The characters are well developed and the story line flows easily from one page to the next. The hero's are astounding and the villains are wicked, who will win when the stakes are high?
A great read by Claudy Conn. About a girl named Sassy who lost her mother and 2 years later her dad passes away.. Her dad warned her about using her powers. Once her dad died she had to leave the only home she knew since a new valor would be moving in. She went to her Aunts yet because of certain situations she was unable to stay. She was sent to be a tutor for young girls. Along the way to the school the carriage lost a wheel and another carriage came along , inside the carriage we will meet Justin and Percy who offered her assistance. Anyway, we will skip to when she reaches the school and has a very bad feeling, such as evil, when she arrives. There is something going on which she feels need to be discovered. At the same time she meets Sophy who thought Sassy was beneath them yet they become the best of friends. Sassy also noticed that Justin is smitten with Sophy. This is a great love story as well as a mystery novel, and we might as well add that Sassy is a White witch and Justin is a Warlock. They are both trying to find out what is going on at the school yet they do not realise that they are both working on the same case. Great read!
Sassy Winthrop, daughter of the local Vicar of Sutton, has now lost both parents and must leave her home for the new Vicar. A friend of her mothers has agreed to take her in. She was left a small legacy from her mother who came from an Aristocratic family but disowned her mother because she married a vicar. Sassy knows there is something different about her-she happens to be a white witch (which runs in her mother's family) and will come into her full power when she turns 21. While she is at Lady Margate's she decides she wants to be a tutor and Lady Margate's friends owns an all girl school-Netherby Halls. She gets a postion there.
She meets the Marquis Justin Dartmour, who is known as a rake and rogue and also happens to be a warlock. Needless to say their encounters are explosive. There is also a dark mystery at Netherby Halls and Sassy means to find out what is going on. The plot thickens and true Claudy style, there is something in this book for everyone-passion, mystery and suspense. The story grabs you from beginning to end. Great read!
I really enjoy Claudy Conn's books, be they e-book, paper, or audio. This just happens to be an audio book.
Sassy is a white witch of just twenty-one years old, whose powers are still developing, when her world changed forever. Her mother passed on two years ago, now her father, the Vicar of Sussex, has also passed on leaving her without a place to live, as the new Vicar will need the parsonage.
Needing to find stable employment , her mother's friend sends her to Netherby Halls to tutor and that is when the story turns on a dark journey where things are not what they appear to be and where she meets the Marquis of Dartmour.
The world is consistent, dark, filled with the unexpected, and has tasteful sensuality twisting throughout. I like the light magic in this book.
The characters are well developed, believable, and personable. Sassy is a wonderful character who is strong and courageous. A great characteristic to have.
If you like a side of paranormal with your steamy historical romance, then this book is for you.
This is quite an original premise, combining Regency romance with magic. The heroine, Sassy, is appealing, smart and clever, and the hero, Justin, is a good looking, Regency stereotype. The context throws light on the lot of less privileged women, and all in all had a great deal of potential. The author even found a way to include graphic sexual content while keeping her heroine a virgin who follow Regency morality: have her dream it! Sadly, I don't particularly enjoy graphic, soft porn. If I like the characters I feel like a voyeur, and if I don't, then I'm not interested. I know many think otherwise, but I note it as many readers like to be informed one way or the other.
After a little bit of waffling I decided to give it a three v. a four. Sassy is a vicar's daughter and has magic powers. She keeps visualizing herself naked with a man, who we later learn to be the marquis Justin. From the moment they meet there's a strong connection between them that has magical components.
It gets a little wacky bordering on unbelievable in a few places (and yes, it's a book about magic so I know it won't be "believable" but I never got totally sold into the story line"). There's a lot of telling and the character development lags a bit at the end. Still, it was a quick read and I had a lot of fun reading it. So probably more like a 3.5!
I really enjoyed this book. Loved the plot. Netherby Halls is a school for orphaned aristocrat girls, but terrible things going on there. Sassy is an orphaned white witch that goes there to work as a teacher there. Justin and his friend Percy are investigating the school. Justin happens to be a warlock who's soul cries out for Sassy. The attraction is hot and steamy. They must learn to love one another so their souls can merge as one. Another wonderful book by Claudy...she always writes clever and steamy romances. I highly recommend this!!!
I found the storyline very interesting. This story is about a young lady who does not pretend not to see a wrong being done around her. She does something about it. Even though her circumstances are not the best she allows no one to walk over her regardless of their supposed station. I do like that Sassy is not a pushover, the girl has some gumption and a backbone. It was a hot read before they ever consummated their love...read it you'll see why, lol. I enjoyed this read while I listened to the audio. A good way to spend an afternoon...Enjoy, I did.
