As a kickboxing cop, Marlie Franklin protected the citizens of Houston, and as a young single mom, she kept her teenage son out of trouble. However, when a dying witch curses her at a bust, she begins to attract monsters wherever she goes. One disguises itself as an Internal Affairs officer and causes Marlie to lose her badge, forcing her to leave town in search of work.
Then, as the new deputy for Lockwood, Texas, Marlie discovers that mystical evil has rooted itself in the small town, with a gang of bikers casting spells to keep control. When she refuses to back down, her son could lose his life. Can Marlie learn to use the curse within her for good, to cure the corruption of Lockwood?
I wasn’t sure about this right from the start but decided to give it a go as the plot did seem to show a little bit of promise. Unfortunately, for me, that promise was short-lived. This never really reaches anything near its potential. Marlie Franklin reads like a caricature of herself rather than a true and believable character and accepts too readily, for my liking, the paranormal events that seem to befall her in quick succession. She barely blinks an eye at creatures experimenting on humans at an abandoned petrol garage and her son is not much better. He seems to be much more worldly wise in magic and the paranormal than he initially lets on to his mother but that is no explanation for how quickly he just accepts this new world he and his mother soon find themselves in.
I received this book in return for an honest review.
The book itself is well written with great descriptions and well flowing dialogue. The story line however, was a little slow but filled with a lot of detail description and images of the paranormal involved in the story. I believe anyone interested in a paranormal thriller would thoroughly enjoy this book. I admit I was anxious and curious to see if the author could wrap up the story into a neat package and am curious to see what happens next in the story line.
