Firstly if I could I would have given this 2.5 out of 5, I really liked the concept, I Loved the two Angels Leonardo & David, especially in the Angel training scenes. But I ultimately found Holmes concept of hell alienating, I understand it is based on Catholicism and the Seven deadly sins but the concept that suicides are impaled on trees for an eternity of agony just annoyed me. Especially when the rest of the book is light hearted and quirky. I found the hell parts quite mean spirited and think the novel could have benefitted from a more forgiving version of hell such as the one portrayed in What dreams may come.
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I was going to at first. It started a little bit clunky but as the fantasy element grew the writing became more assured. I'm not quite sure why he went to Hell for saving Clemency since saving souls was his business. If I was given the sequel (Mark Holmes brought copies of his book for our Reading Group to read and comment on) I would be interested enough to read it.
