Mother of Learning has been one heck of an entertaining ride, and the beginning of the end is here.

I can’t believe I am near the end of Mother of Learning by nobody103 or Domagoj Kurmaic, the first web novel series I read, and I’ve been very impressed with the journey I took here so far. I know this is one of the most highly regarded web novel series out there, and indeed, this isn’t a sign that ALL or even the majority of web novels are as good or well-polished as this. But I would be lying if I said I won’t check out any other web novel fantasy series after I am done reading this series. Worm by Wildbow, A Practical Guide to Evil by ErraticErrata, and The Wandering Inn by Pirateaba are top priorities. These are just a few examples. For now, though, I have only one volume/story arc left in the series, and I will read that next month. Considering the all-connecting nature of the entire series between each installment, because this is one web novel divided into four volumes, please understand that I am very limited in what I can say here without giving spoilers. So I will keep this review briefer than usual. This is my favorite volume in the series so far, and there is a big potential the fourth and final volume will top it.

“It’s not true fun unless you regret it immediately afterwards.

The story in Mother of Learning: ARC 3 continues immediately after the big revelations at the end of the previous volume. The origin of the time loop has been revealed. Zorian and Zach are pressed for time to redouble their efforts to prevent the potential cataclysmic disaster once the time loop inevitably expires, which means every choice can no longer be undone. This will sound repetitive, but I am once again impressed by how great the author keeps the story turning and interesting with constant revelations and development in a very engaging way. Seriously, I mentioned my dislike of the first 35% of the previous volume. I said the first 35% of volume 2 felt like filler and was unnecessarily long. After reading volume 3, I am happy to be proven wrong. My experience remains true, and I will not change my statement on that until I do a reread. But none of the parts in the previous two volumes felt redundant now. As the series approaches the end, Kurmaic has started to implement every foundation of story, lore, and world-building he has established in the previous volumes into effect here. None of them felt wasted now, and I loved the improvements in writing quality and witnessing more pivotal encounters and events.

“Silly old girl, making such blunders at your age. It’s just as they say: you learn all your life and still die a fool.

One of the finest improvements and changes in volume 3 that worked for me was how the narrative involved the supporting characters extensively more than before. Some readers might not like the direction here. Mother of Learning is still Zorian's story, there's no doubt about that, but here, it felt like it's no longer his story alone. This is now Zorian AND Zach's story together with the friends and acquaintances they met on their journey. And for me, it made the series more compelling and intriguing. I think the story risks repetitiveness if, let's say, up to the third volume, the plot still focuses exclusively on Zorian. The duo and friendship between Zorian and Zach, as they tried their best to come up with ideas and untangle the mess they were in, were refreshing to read. And I am so happy to see how much Xvim, Taiven, and Silverlake continuously developed throughout the series. Heck, not only that. We also finally see Zorian's infamous brother, Daimen, in action. And the main villain, too!

“Learning a language is never a wasted effort, young man… It develops your mind and expands your horizons!

Another thing I criticized in volume 2, again the first 35%, was how boring Zorian's time outside of Cyoria's academy was. That notion no longer applies here. With the expansion of Zorian's abilities and a few surprising new POVs, Zorian's time outside the Cyoria academy in this book was captivating. Everything felt incredibly well done, in my opinion. Sure, there were a few sections where the conversations and scenes felt drawn out or slightly too long, but they weren't a big deal in the grander scheme. I wish I could talk more in detail rather than being vague about everything here. But seriously, if you have started reading the series, you will want to get here. The last few chapters of this book were just intense, bonkers, and unexpected, in a good way.

My smaller-sized review of Mother of Learning: ARC 3 is not a negative sign for the series. As I said at the beginning of this video, I believe this penultimate installment of the series is my favorite of Mother of Learning so far. Reviewing a web novel series is a different kind of experience compared to reading and reviewing a series of novels. It is clear from how each book in Mother of Learning ended that the storytelling structure here is meant to be read and treated as a web novel fantasy series. This means each book in the series ended and began as if there were merely a change in chapter progression instead of volumes. But despite that, I can certainly say this. The reading experience has been pretty damn good so far. It has been difficult postponing reading the next volume instantly after the mega cliffhanger this volume has. And with that in mind, I will read the fourth and final book in the series next month. The beginning of the end has been established with recognizable force. It is time to find out how Domagoj Kurmaic will conclude the series.

Check out my YouTube channel where I show my instant reactions upon finishing reading fantasy books.

Arc 3 of Mother of Learning finishes in incredible fashion, with the author at his very best. While I found some issues with the writing style early in the series, I have come to know and adore these characters - and absolutely love the magic and world to the point where these writing issues are completely forgivable.

I know this book was originally a web serial, and that can really turn off some readers - but WOW this book absolutely rocks from beginning to end. The stakes are as high as they can be, the tension is ramped up, and the plot threads that all get wrapped up here are just perfection.

I would recommend this book to any fan of fantasy who cares more about plot than prose, and if you are one of those readers (which I happen to be) this book and this series are some of the best that fantasy has to offer.

"Well said Simulacrum #2, well said."

Top nobody103 titles

Yet again, in Domagoj Kurmaić's Mother of Learning, Arc 3, Zorian takes up different tactics to both escape the time loop and save his world. The nature of the world and the time loop make his learning all the more urgent. We have more flushed out characters, some of whom had only been alluded to previously and some who didn't have substantial roles in previous time loops. The mix of familiar faces with 'new' characters worked really well. This is especially true of Zorian's relationship with his famous explorer brother.

With the expansion of Zorian's abilities, we also have a satisfying expansion of the world. Like the previous two books, the ending felt abrupt. That can be excused in the first two books because the action just continued where things left off in the next. Here, however, I felt more was needed since this book ends the series. Still, I hope this is not the end of either Zorian or the world that Kurmaić has built. I really enjoyed this series and want more!

dalej ciekawie, zbliżamy się do wielkiego finału. fajnie jest obserwować, jak zdobywanie nowych umiejętności wpływa na zachowanie głównego bohatera i jak inna jest on teraz osoba, niż był na początku xD

This is Arc is waay better than the previous one. I mean of course I think that the development and plots that happened in Arc 2 are important but it was so tedious as a reading experience, it ALMOST ruined reading this book.

But thankfully I managed to separate my emotions and focus on this book by itself .. and honestly the things that happened here are way more exciting to me. Plus I feel that with getting A-LOT of the world development from the 1st two Arcs. Made this way more digestible and less heavy.

Basically, it had more fun actions, adventures, AWSOME character development that makes sense and doesn’t feel out of place.

So in the words of Huda who read Arc 1 … it would be rude of me not to give this 5 stars ⭐️.

⚠️⚠️SPOILERS⚠️⚠️

I have zero doubt that the MAIN reason I loved this book so much, is because of now one of my favorite teams and duos .. Zack and Zorian. Man they just make such a beautiful team . Each had their strong suits, and both are facing such a challenging impossible thing that they have NO choice but to trust each other. And even with trust, the author did it wonderfully … it wasn’t immediate unrealistic trust, it felt real.
🌧
Zack Zack Zack .. my man Zack .. I love him. He is just undoubtedly so wholesome. And I looooved witnessing his development from a reckless dude to a still reckless dude that thinks and analyzes his actions and the affects they would cause.
🌦
Zorian .. as much as I love him and enjoy following him as our main guy, as I’ve said numerous times, he can get tiring. I don’t mean boring, I mean he is so smart and likes to study many subjects and focus on details thatI get tired and bored of reading, that I eventually sometimes skimmed when he went into a tangent that adds nothing to the plot and is just more world building. And having Zack with him lightened the mood.

The impossibility and hardness of the situation kept getting increased however it didn’t feel hopeless. I honestly can’t even make theories about how it’ll conclude, it’ll take so much brain power plus I enjoy just following the guys.
⛅️
I hope that the last Arc isn’t only set inside the loop. I hope they get to get out and face more action outside 😂. Even though I want to the poor guys to rest, I just want to experience a new narrative. More than a month to be specific. Especially to see them making more lasting relationships romantic or other 🙃.

Mother of Learning: ARC 3 takes what’s brilliant from the previous 2 Arcs and does it better. What is enjoyable after each arc of Mother of Learning is that each arc equates to a fundamental shift in the narrative. In Arc 1, it was the possibility of more time loopers. In Arc 2, we learn the truth of the time loop, the origin and the costs of being stuck here. Arc 3 also introduces a fundamental shift which can lead to many interesting possibilities.

As the title suggests, Zorian doesn’t become more skilled or stronger through not being a prodigy (though he is renowned for his intellect) but through hard work and utilising this situation where he pretty much has an endless supply of resources to improve himself, hence his rapid growth. This is even more so when he gains certain companions, from Zach to others, along the way.

Near the end of Arc 2 we finally have Zorian and Zach together, and this relationship is what makes this stand out from the previous two. For Zorian’s sake it’s wonderful for him not to feel lonely, being isolated in this self-repeated loop for years. This goes quadruple for Zach staying in this loop for decades. It’s shocking he even got his wits after this turmoil. Every action you conduct leads to utter failure and is directionless for the majority of the time. Zach was supposed to be the chosen one, and Zorian ended up as an accident , his outside presence and unique traits made him more suited to making a concrete plan of leaving the time loop itself.

Arc 3 shifts from cyclical problem-solving in Cyoria to a linear, continent-spanning quest. Expanding the scope of the objective. The revelations introduced here are earned. Zorian’s moral complexity, him learning from his past self yet becoming an utterly different person than the man who first came into the loop, and his reliance on people outside of himself are sweet. He’s not so rash to attack, though he does have his blind sides, especially relating to his family. Though even in this department he’s improving steadily.

We gain more answers about the nature of the world, yet questions are raised at the same time. We see more various talking species beyond spiders, and they are quite fascinating to observe. The merging of historical and mythological elements is great and brings more wonder to the tale. There’s a lot to discuss but not much in a non-spoiler fashion. I would say this has the best pacing of the entire series, and that ending really sets up some amazing things for Book 4. Once again the magic, the world, the characters, etc. really work so well harmoniously, creating a package much stronger than you would initially expect.

8/10

Book 3 in the Mother of Learning series done, I'm really loving these. Given that this is a time loop series I don't find them repetitive at all really, especially in these later installments where we have learned so much more. The ending was great I wasn't expecting to see this particular character come into the mix. One more left!!!

It's true as they say, you learn things all your life and still die a fool

This Arc is my favorite amongst the current 3. So many of that good stuff happened that it is hard to keep track.

The duo of Zack and Zorian made this book immensely enjoyable and made the story more fun to read. The twists with Red Robe were intriguing to say the least, and all the information we learned about the nature of the time loop was enlightening. The cast of characters of course was great, from Xvim to Alanic to Taiven to Quatach-Ichl and now even Silverlake entered the fray more so than she did previously.

One of the highlights this book too was meeting a character I wanted to know more about since book 1, in addition to the awesome fight scenes this book had and the sharp turn the story took in the last few chapters.

Cool moments I liked (SPOILERS...Duh):

1-Xvim testing Zach's shaping skills and being disappointed was hilarious

2-The attack on the hole with 100 men in addition to Xvim and Alanic was so cool

3-The crown being the one that is on Quatach's head was funny and surprising

4-Seeing Xvim die was sadge, even if I knew he will come back, but damn does that dude keep surprising me with his combat prowess, alongside Alanic of course.

5-We learned a lot about Primordial and how they relate to the loop which was cool.

6-Xvim backhanding Quatach's attack was one so goooood, even Quatach seemed shocked xD

7-Simulacrum spell really helped make the story flow better

8-Finally meeting Daimen and the long awaited conversation between the two happened and did not disappoint at all, I love Daimen just like I expected I would

9-The fight with the OP Hydra was cool

10-Zorian admitting that he was wrong about Daimen was beautiful

11-The timeloop is a Primodrial and the characters are living in it like whaaaat

12-The meeting with the stranger at the bar and then suddenly realizing that he was Quatach made me go axfjhiasifwaikmnfaw

13-The conversation that ensued at the bar and the level of tension was one of the highlights of this Arc

14-The raid on the royal treasury with Quatach was entertainment 100

Continues to be an entertaining series - I was glad to realise there's an Arc 4, 'cos at around 75% of the way through this one I suddenly thought 'heck, for some reason I've been assuming this is a trilogy and it does not feel anywhere near wrapping up'.

I think it's going on a bit too long, to be honest, although I get that it was originally a web series so pacing would've been done with different concerns than if it had been planned as a novel (or series of novels). I'm also finding that some of the prose style is starting to grate on me; there are little quirks I'd noticed before, but I guess over time they just become a bit more annoying. I don't know whether this has been edited at all between being a web series and a novel, but I think it could've done with a bit more editing. (The plural of simulacrum is simulacra, for heaven's sake.) And there are a few odd moments in its treatment of female characters that just make me go 'huh'. I think if this were the last book, I'd have been more able to ignore these kinds of issues, but their noticeability becomes more pronounced as the story continues to go on.

Still, I'll look forward to finding out how it all wraps up. (Which I do hope will be in arc 4!)

There's still a lot of fun to be had, but a lot of filler, in this third arc. Pretty much the first third of this arc could've been cut and continued from there.

Early on Zach asks: "We have a plan?" and I had to ask myself was that the author talking at that stage of writing... It does get back on track when they finally get around to the quest they were meant to be doing the entire time.

My other issue with this arc is that it's no longer Zorian's story. He's always had a large supporting cast, but in this book it's very much Zorian AND Zach's story... which isn't the same. Zach often works as a deus ex machina to sort out the shortcomings of Zorian which kinda takes away from the point of the story. I'm also not a huge fan of the humour that goes on between them.

I sound like I didn't enjoy this but the adventure itself and when they do finally get back to the quest in hand is A LOT of fun. I am looking forward to the final arc as overall it's been an epic time loop story.

DNF after 26%.

I'm not sure I can carry progression fantasy series all the way to the finish line. The fault may be on the reader for not finishing, and trying to listen to third book on two exhausting travel days bookending a vacation, then totally losing the plot.

Initial thoughts: Wow. The author took everything from the first two books and keeps building upon them layer by layer. All of Zorian and Zack's shenanigans and hi-jinks are both fascinating and fun as they continue to workout the details of their situation. I absolutely love how they've figured out how to work with others and really expand the scope of their research. The book ends on an unexpected cliff hanger so I'm continuing on to book 4 immediately. I must know how this all ends.

4.5 ⭐️ but I am rounding it up

The fights were amazing, they have learned so many things. Zack is hilarious and I love him. Interactions with Daimen were SO GOOD. Silverlake is hilarious as well and the story progressed pretty well. I just thought they would be out of the loop by now and try to tackle the things outside of the world. So I am intrigued as to how this will be approached in the final book

Also, Zorian has become such a terrifying mind mage that I am loving him

A little long

A little repetitive and long, but still entertaining. The writing and prose is not very good and is more like a young adult book, but the story kept me reading. Also it is a little weak around revelations and creating tension / rewards.

"The way Zorian was feeling this evening... perhaps this was how Zach had felt all the time during earlier years. Making friends and experiencing life-changing moments with them over and over again, only for the other party to forget all about it in the next restart..."

Simply wow! The best in the series so far.

I was a bit underwhelmed with the climax of arc two but arc three starts off with a flourish and delivers the complete satisfaction at the end. Yes, there are a lot of reasons for such a wholesome experience.

Foray into a few new territories: So far, we had seen the world mostly on Altazia continent only. However, in this arc, Zorian and Zach explore another continent which is a delightful experience. The jungles, the desert and the estate. I have loved the way Mr. Kurmaić had crafted the world of Miasina.
"What is it with you and annoying teachers?" Zach whispered to him..."

Teachers, More Teachers: In this installment, we get to experience a new lot of eccentric teachers with whom we get to experience a whole new level of teaching. And that is why, we see some awesome levelling up of Zorian. I really love the way Zorian and Zach keep on convincing some of these teachers every restart to teach them even though sometimes it becomes fatal for them.
"It was interesting, Zorian mused, that even after all these years spent in the time loop, some simple experiences had eluded him until now.

Getting thrown out of a coffee shop for disturbing the other customers, for instance, was an entirely novel experience."

A few open threads finally on the verge of converging: I was extremely curious that we do not know much about the Kazinski family in the first two arcs except for Kirielle. Here we get to know the full family and their fucked up relationships among each other. It is very endearing to understand their motivations, feelings, assumptions and the expectations. For me, it was the highlight of this arc and was the major reason for this being a five starrer for me.

I had already begun Arc 4 two days ago. *Grinning with excitement*

It's very fun, but also incredibly turn-your-brain-off. It's so episodic that it begins to feel like a stretched out anime or cartoon and i'm just in the middle of one long bing watch - filler episodes, "go fetch me this item" quests, drawn out plots simply to fill the time. I don't get the sense that the author was trying to hit a page minimum, just that there was no sense of urgency to tell the story in an ineffecient way. But hey, the sidequests and filler storylines are still fun. I just have turned this into a bit of a mind-off background read.

This is the 3rd of four, and it's definitely the case that each novel is one part of a single, large storyline. The book ends have never felt particularly clean or satisfying. It's impossible to know how close to an end I'd be.

They both expand on older stories and characters, as well as expand and bring in new ones. I think the author is incredibly creative to be able to weave a time loop story like this.

All to say, I really like the story and the execution for the most part. But 3000-ish pages in total for the whole series??

The narrator of the audiobook does a great job.

Intensity ramped up!

I'm loving this series. The time loop shenanigans are so well done, I've only found 1 single flaw towards the end of this book out of the three so far in the series.

My only request would be, I think the author should, at some point, add a phonetics appendix to the books to explain some of the more interesting pronunciation and naming schemes. They are very unique and really different from anything I've ever seen so would be nice to know how that came about.

And also to feel a bit more confident on how to say the names in general.

Can't wait to see what happens next!

Another enjoyably entry into the story! This one picks up the speed a lot, which is great. I was very disappointed to realize that it wasn’t the final arc. I wish this had been made more clear from the start!

But, still, a quality (semi-mindless) read with some creative magic and a lot of fun. Would recommend.

Arc 3 of „Mother of Learning“ by Domagoj Kurmaic is a perfect continuation of Zorians journey in the time loop. The thing I mostly want to know when reading a sequel is:

Is it as good as the pervious books?

The Answer is: Absolutely!!!

If you’ve loved the story so far pick it up without hesitation!

3.5 (rounded to 4). A lot of the best elements of this series are really on show here in terms of world building, and by now the main characters (including the ones besides Zorian and Zach) have all been fairly fleshed out. Suffers from some of the pacing issues of the second installment and some plot lines seem not to go anywhere, but i’ll reserve judgement on that until reading the last book.
