Magical realism is my jam, and this series ticks all the boxes. A town I lived in for 20 years, a bookstore I'm still in love with and a magical underworld that doesn't make anyones life easy.

I've been a fan of urban fantasy novels for a long time, but as much as I love the genre I've been getting really tired of how repetitive they've become. No matter how good some of my favorite authors are, all UF seems to boil down to is vampires/wizards/zombies and some mix in-between.

I picked this up on recommendation of a friend of mine in Vegas and ended up LOVING IT.

"Sin Gorge" is the first of a new series of novels set in the world of 'Everything Under.' The lead character (or characters, I guess) is a man named John Flicker, who is basically a man who died but his body and soul became two separate beings. He/they work as paranormal investigators, but it's not like a 'wizard for hire' like the Dresden Files, it's more like a mystery novel like Carl Hiaasen. In 'Everything Under' there is NO MAGIC. No wands or spells, it's all considered part of the normal world that most people just don't know is there. For a first book it still has some issues because the author is still world-building, but I like where it's going so far.

This book was really different, and I can't talk too much about the story or I'll be giving spoilers about it. But if you love UF and are a little tired of it being so formula like I've been, THIS IS A BOOK TO GET and a series to definitely follow. There is a whole world of characters surrounding John Flicker that are sometimes familiar (yes there are vampires) and others that I've never seen anything like them before (I love the Telephone Birds! MORE TELEPHONE BIRDS!).

Pick this book up and I am sure you won't be disappointed. The next book is supposed to come out in May and already I want it.

Please don't take my word on this. I just couldn't get in to the story. It was well written, just not for me.
