उसका नग्न शरीर एक छलावे की तरह ठाकुर की आंखों से ओझल हो गया । ठाकुर उस क्षण दीन दुनिया से बेखबर जड़ खड़ा था । उसे यूं लग रहा था जैसे उसे दिल का दौरा पड़ने वाला हो । ऐसे ही अप्सराओं जैसे देवताओं की तपस्या भंग कर देने वाले स्त्री शरीर की लालसा करता-करता वह बूढ़ा हो गया था । उस एक क्षण में उसने वह नजारा साक्षात किया था जिसके वह आज तक सपने ही देखता रहा था । दूधिया रंगत, पहाड़ों की चोटियों जैसा उन्नत सुडौल वक्ष, लचकती हुई पतली कमर, भारी नितम्ब, कैबरे डांसरों जैसी लंम्बी सुडौल टांगें, मरमरी बांहें, लम्बे खुले बाल, संगमरमर से तराशा हुआ चेहरा, आंखों में मद के डोरे, चेहरे पर लालसा की तमतमाहट । उसका जी चाह रहा था कि वह अभी राकेश का कत्ल कर दे और उसकी बीवी को हथिया ले ।
“ये बहुत उस्ताद आदमी है, भैया ।” - ठाकुर राकेश से बोला, - “कई बड़े तगड़े हाथ मार चुका है ये । हमारी तो यह पहली ही कोशिश है । इसके मुकाबले में तो हम नौसिखिये हैं ।” हमेशा की तरह इस बार विमल ने प्रतिवाद नहीं किया । “बसन्त कुमार ।” - ठाकुर आगे बढ़ा - “इस बात का इन्तजाम भी तुम्हारे गैरेज में ही होना है कि बक्से के भीतर मौजूद गार्ड हम पर गोली न चला सके ।” “कैसे ?” “जिन चार सुराखों का राकेश ने जिक्र किया है, उनके भीतर तुम्हें चूड़ियां डालनी होंगी और उन सुराखों के नाप के अर्थात एक इंच व्यास के चार पांच पेच बनाने होंगे, जो उन चूड़ियों के सुराखों में फिट किये जा सकें । वे पेच भीतर की तरफ से नहीं खोले जा सकेंगे । उनके लग जाने के बाद भीतर मौजूद गार्ड हम पर गोली नहीं चला सकेगा ।” “लेकिन पेच लगाने की नौबत आने से पहले तो वह गोली चला सकता है ।” - प्रहलाद बोला । वह हालात से खुश नहीं था । वे लोग ऐसी सशस्त्र डकैती की योजना बना रहे थे, जिसमें तीन आदमियों की जानें भी जाने वाली थी । पकड़े जाने पर फांसी का फंदा गले में पड़ना निश्चत था । “वह एक बड़ा मुख्तसर सा वक्फा होगा ।” - ठाकुर बोला - “उस वक्फे हमें सावधान रहना होगा । और फिर बक्से वाले गार्ड को यह तो मालूम नहीं होगा कि हम क्या करने जा रहे हैं । वह हर स्थिति में स्वयं को भीतर सुरक्षित समझेगा । इसलिये उम्मीद है कि वह तब तक गोली नहीं चलायेगा जब तक उसे अपनी जान और बैंक के माल को खतरा नहीं दिखाई देगा । और वह खतरा उसकी निगाह में तो दिखाई देना सम्भव ही नहीं है ।” “अगर वैन चलने से पहले ही किसी ने सुराखों में चूड़ियां पड़ी देख ली ?” - तीरथ सिंह बोला । “कोई नहीं देखेगा ।” - ठाकुर बोला - “वह चूड़ियां सुराखों के बीच में होंगी और एकदम उसके साथ आंख जोड़े बिना दिखाई नहीं देने वाली । और ऐसा भला कोई क्यों करेगा ?” “बक्से के भीतर मौजूद गार्ड का क्या इन्तजाम होगा ?” - विमल ने पूछा । “वह चूहेदान में फंसे चूहे की तरह अपने बक्से में फंसा रहेगा ।” - ठाकुर बोला - “हम उसकी परवाह किये बिना वैन को प्रहलाद के ट्रक में चढ़ा देंगे और वहां से कूच कर जायेंगे । वह कुछ नहीं कर सकता ।” “वह चीख चिल्ला सकता है । उल्टे तुम उसका कुछ नहीं कर सकते ।” “वैन ट्रक में होगी । उसने चीखने चिल्लाने की आवाज बाहर नहीं निकलेगी ।” “जरूर निकलेगी । वह गला फाड़ फाड़कर चिल्लायेगा तो जरूर निकलेगी । वह अपने बख्तरबन्द वॉल्ट में सुरक्षित है । वह भला चिल्लाने से क्यों डरेगा । और फिर न ट्रक साउन्ड प्रूफ है, न वैन का बक्सा ।”
“एक बात और सुनो ।” - नीलम व्यग्र स्वर में बोली । “बोलो ।” - विमल बोला । “मैं तुम्हें याद करती हूं ।” विमल ने केवल एक गहरी सांस ली और धीरे से रिसीवर क्रेडिल पर रख दिया । उसके मस्तिष्क में महात्मा बुद्ध के शब्द गूंज गये - यह संसार एक नित्य जलते हुए घर के समान है । यहां सुख की कल्पना भी करना अपराध है । धन्न करतार ! - उसके मुंह से निकला

इस उपन्यास विमल से ज्यादा इंस्पेक्टर शमशेर ने ज्यादा प्रभावित किया जैसे शमशेर की एंट्री और विमल की उसकी शामने पोल खुलना. वहीँ दूसरी तरफ प्रहलाद का अपनी बीवी के साथ खिड़की की घटना और तीरथ की पारिवारिक स्तिथि व तेज़ दिमाग भी बेहद पसंद आया.
एक बात मुझे समझ नहीं आयी की शमशेर ने तीरथ को एक महीने पहले से विमल की निगरानी में कैसे लगा दिया??
इससे पहले अनिल मोहन की डकैती की काफी किताबे पढ़ चुका हूँ पर ये कहानी बेहद कसी हुई है और तेज़ गति से चलती है... मुझे तो बहुत पसंद आयी, full marks👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Again a great adventurous and thrill read.
I don't understand why all the characters think that they can double cross Vimal and slip away. I mean guys, just open your damn eyes and see that he is "The Vimal" who is been hardened by the circumstances of life.

Surendra Singh Sohal aka Vimal is living in Jaipur after his previous escapades. Having inadvertently got sucked into a life of crime, the well educated and once thoroughly decent Vimal remains a fugitive on the run from the long arm of the law. However, fortunes have lately taken a turn for the better. Having got a job in Jaipur as a motor mechanic, he has taken over the garage and living the life of a perfectly normal man with his changed name Basant Kumar.
Unfortunately for Vimal, his past comes back to haunt him when the ageing Inspector Thakur turns up at his garage one day to get his motorcycle repaired. It soon turns out that the motorcycle was just a pretext. The inspector has recognised Vimal and intends to enlist him in pulling of a bank heist involving 48 lakh rupees (Rs. 4.8 Million- a sum beyond the stuff of dreams when the book was written in the late 70s).
Confronted by the choice of pulling off a heist that may or may not come off on the one hand and arrest followed by certain death sentence on the other, Vimal takes the third option: running away. Unknown to him, his garage assistant Tirath Singh is part of Thakur's nefarious plan. Betrayed by Tirath, Vimal is apprehended on the route and served a stern warning by the vicious Thakur. With no other way out, Vimal has no choice but to fall in line.
After elaborate plans are drawn up, Vimal & co. successfully pull off the heist. Everything seems like going to plan until one of the gang members is injured in the crossfire and another gets killed- Vimal himself having a narrow escape. Despite the setbacks, the survivors successfully get away with the loot. With 48 lakhs in hand, nearly every all the survivors set out to increase their share in the pie. Honesty and humanity become the first casualties. Can Vimal successfully navigate his way out the maze of conspiracies and counter-conspiracies?
Written in 1978, the novel has some brilliantly sketched characters. There is the clever, redoubtable Vimal who is once again forced to become party to a heinous crime against his will. Despite repeated betrayals, he remains an innately kind and decent man. At the other end of the spectrum is the cunning and vicious Inspector Thakur, who will stop at nothing to secure his future, with retirement just a month away. There's the enigmatic Meena, the desperate Prahlad Kumar and the greedy Tirath Singh- characters who will remain with you long after you have finished reading this novel.
S.M. Pathak, true to style, packs in surprises aplenty. In his trademark style, Pathak makes the reader privy to facts the protagonists in the drama are completely unaware of, giving them a perspective that the characters are denied. This book is an engaging thriller for at least three quarters of the journey. Unlike most of Pathak's later works, the suspense slackens just a touch towards the end.
Nonetheless, Bank Van Robbery is unquestionably a gripping heist thriller that keeps you guessing almost until the very end. An excellent work from the master of suspense.
