About Kathryn Meyer Griffith 2023
Since childhood I’ve been an artist, and have worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over fifty-one years ago now, and have had thirty-five (romantic horror, horror novels, romantic SF horror, romantic suspense, romantic time travel, historical romance, thrillers, one non-fiction short story collection, dinosaur books, and murder mysteries) previous novels and thirteen short stories published from various traditional publishers since 1984. But I’ve gone into self-publishing in a big way since 2012; and upon getting all my previous books’ full rights back for the first time in 36 years, have self-published all of them. My seven Dinosaur Lake novels and Spookie Town Murder Mysteries (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away, Ghosts Beneath Us, Witches Among Us, What Lies Beneath the Graves, All Those Who Came Before, When the Fireflies Returned, and Echoes of Other Times) are my best-sellers.
I was married to Russell for over forty-three years; have a son, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. I live in a small quaint town in Illinois. I have a quirky cat, Sasha, and we live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk/classic rock singer in my youth with my late brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.

With what has happened to Jenny, she now has a secret she must keep from everybody, especially those she cares about the most. She is a vampire which does not mean she has to be a monster. All she wants is to have a normal life and be there for her children now that she is their only parent.

After losing her husband to an attack, Jenny cannot remember, and her world crumbles apart. With nowhere to go, she returns to her hometown to be near her brother, Joey, and start fresh. Recovering from the tragic attack is difficult as her body goes through strange changes. When she realizes she is a vampire, she makes it her main goal not to let it affect her life or her relationship with her children.

Soon, however, the vampires that killed her husband and changed her return and begin killing the townspeople. At first, Jenny hopes she is wrong, but eventually she knows they have come back for her, so she must do something or her children may be in danger.

Jenny really shows readers the bond between a mother and her children as well as the grief process after losing a beloved spouse. Readers experience the many levels of caring a person has during the day-to-day life. Not only does Jenny love her children with a fierceness that a mother alone has, but she also has a strong familial bond with her brother. Each person in the town has a distinctive personality and moves the story along nicely. However, I do think the main character must have been suffering from a major case of denial about her condition. For someone who has fought vampires and interacted with them on a personal level, it takes her a long while to discover what she has become. Still, on the whole, the story is in-depth, fast paced and emotionally satisfying.

On the night of Jeff and Jenny’s twelfth anniversary, they are viciously attacked while returning to their car.

Two weeks later, Jenny wakes up from a coma. Her husband is dead.

Assured her two children are being cared for, she lies in the hospital bed, struggling to remember what happened that night. She draws a blank.

The longer she lies in that bed, the weaker she gets. She aches all over. Even her hair hurts. And she’s so thirsty and hungry.

Detective Benjamin Bradley is assigned to her case and questions her about what she remembers, but she still can’t recall anything.

She wishes she could remember. She has many questions. Who attacked them? Were they going to be back to finish the job? She prayed it was all over and she and her children were safe.

Her brother Joey flies up from Summer Haven, Florida, their home town. He suggests she and the kids come back there and stay in their parents empty house. It’s neglected, but nothing Jenny can’t fix herself.

Jenny and her kids settle into the family farmhouse. It comes with its own mystery.

The townsfolk claim it’s haunted. People have seen lights moving around in the house. Some people claim to have heard her fathers horses, though they are long dead.

Jenny continues to get weaker and can’t eat. She begins to suspect the awful truth. She is becoming the thing she despises most.

“She was changing even more. She could feel it in her bones, her flesh, and her very thoughts. What happened if she mutated into something alien?”

Years ago, Joey and Jenny battled a gang of vampires and succeeding in burning them up in the old theater, but not before many people died, including their parents.

She can no longer deny what attacked her that night, or what she is becoming.

And who is the mysterious tall man shadowing her? He stays in the shadows, a gaunt white figure. What does he want from her? Is he one of them?

Jenny worries. She worries about making ends meet. She worries about the long-term. How do you hide not getting older? How can she be a mother to her children when what she craves, what she needs, is human blood?

She worries.

What do I think?

The first thing I loved about this book was the cover art. It’s dark and dreary. You can feel a menacing presence, and Jenny is standing bravely between whatever lurks out there and her children.

I love a strong female protagonist and Jenny is like a momma bear with her cubs. You know how that is.

She’s dealing with losing her husband, moving back home, turning into a loathsome vampire, and worrying about her children.

I liked how she went about learning more about her ‘condition’ and how she taught herself to adapt.

I enjoyed how the author revealed Jenny and Joeys history with the vampires. It explained how she reacted to what she is.

The mystery of the lights and the ghostly horses isn’t a focal point in the story, but it does stay in the back of your mind. The author refers to it vaguely at first, but slips more into the story as you read along.

These vampires are different and I was surprised when the author came up with a new way of becoming one.

When Jenny turns, it makes sense.

This isn’t a funny story. There are fun moments, but Human No Longer has depth, with strong secondary characters and several complications for Jenny to deal with. All while trying to keep her children safe.

I was riveted right from the beginning and would love to read about what happened with Jenny and Joey and their parents previously. That would be a great story.

The characters are strong, the plot is intriguing, the story is fleshed out, and I got a great ending.

Title: "Human No Longer"
A Vampire Novel
Author: Kathryn Meyer Griffith
Review Rating: Five Stars
Genre: Horror Paranormal Fantasy
Reviewer: Linda Hays-Gibbs
This vibrant shocking story starts in St. Louis, Missouri on a sultry night in August, as a deeply in love married couple try to celebrate a twelve year anniversary of their wedding. They are brutally attacked. Jeff Sanders dies from the attack but Jenny Sanders awakes two weeks later from her coma and into a different world, as an alien life form.
Jenny was in shock and her brother Joey's suggestion she move back home and live in their old farmhouse was her only bleak alternative.
However; Jenny, long ago past published author was still changing and trying to cope with the monster she had become.
She had two children to raise, protect and provide for and no skills or money and no book published in years. She soon realized she had no choice but to take her brother's generous offer and move to Florida to make a new life.
The terrorizing realization that she was a real vampire was hard to accept. She fought it and all the violent urges and a terrible thirst for blood. She fed on small animals and hated what she had become fearing for the safety of her very own children and loved ones.
Her story just starts to level out when more vampires come into the picture terrorizing everyone and killing. They are seven feet tall and have super powers. They are the monsters you fear in the night and Jenny is becoming one with them.
I will not give away more of the plot but must advise that you will never guess the ending.
It is a fast paced, traumatizing, heart racing, powerful horror tale with new and exciting twists. It had me holding my breath for the safety of some and agonizing over the horrific events facing Jenny.
If you would like a startling new way to look at vampires, you will thoroughly enjoy this thrilling fantasy.
I fell in love with Jenny. Her determination, courage, steadfast love, stubborn will and fortitude in the face of her agonizing metamorphosis makes her a great heroine. I must say I detested her circumstances as I agonized and worried for her.
Her brother, Joey's devotion, kindness and love for his sister and her children make him a hero and wonderful man. Love blossoms for Jenny too from Joey's friend Andy a sweet heartthrob of a guy. Many of the character's personalities make for endearing never flat creations.
The children's unwavering love for their mother captivated my heart and did rend my soul.
The scraggly lost kitten that almost talks is very heartwarming.
Even the ghosts help to fill out this haunting horror tale and there is more, much more.
I give it Five Stars for a page turning beauty of a vampire horror tale.
I look forward to other mouth-watering vampire tales from Kathryn
Meyer Griffith

A unique and twisted tale of a vampire mother, who has children to protect. Just looking at the cover, Jenny appears locked and loaded. I wouldn't want to take her on, would you?

Jenny was a wife, a mother and a writer. She had put her writing on hold while she helped her husband start his business. Once they could afford a secretary, she went back to her writing. One of the books was about a gang of vampires whose home base was a renovated theater.

Now she was a part of the story.

She had to learn to live with her handicap, otherwise she would be sucking the blood from her own loved ones.

She was so soft-hearted she found it difficult to kill an animal. She had to eat and it was better than the alternative.

How was she supposed to survive and keep her secret?

5 STARS - Would Buy It For Them (lol)

I am so ticked off. I misplaced my notes and had all this great stuff I was going to tell you. I will do my best to remember, lol, all the things I wanted to say.

This was a unique twist on a familiar tale. A mother vampire can be vicious as she struggles to protect her family, not just from others, but from herself. I loved it.

Kathryn Meyer Griffith's writing flows so smoothly I was carried through the pages and felt as if I was walking in Jenny's shoes, not wanting to put the book down. The plot was so unique, I wasn't sure how Kathryn was going to tell the tale. It's nice to know not all vampires are so cold and blood thirty that they cannot control themselves, ripping, tearing, killing and slaughtering with no thought or remorse.

My heart went out to Jenny as she struggled to adjust and make ends meet. She still missed her husband, who had died in the attack that made her who she is now. Now she was alone AND a vampire. Would she be able to have a normal life, or as normal as it could be seeing she's a vampire? Would she survive, seeing someone was out there with a plan that didn't coincide with her own?

The characters drew me into their lives. At times I forgot Jenny was a vampire. Her flawed brother made me want to wrap my arms around him and tell him it will be all right. Joey was steadfast, loyal and in love with her. Would they have a future together?

I can see now that there could be another book. Is there going to be one? I would love to find out how Jenny fares in the future.

I received this book in return for a fair and unbiased review.

“Human No Longer” by Kathryn Meyer Griffith was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is my honest review: I did not like this book. No, I did not like it… I LOVED it! I’ve read only a couple of this author’s books, but that’s enough to tell you with confidence that she has a phenomenal gift for writing captivating fiction. I have already acquired several more of her books, because right now I’m at that stage where I want to read everything she has written.

“Human No Longer” is the story of a young woman whose husband was killed by a vampire. She was also attacked, but after spending some weeks in a coma, she recovered. Needless to say, her life was never the same afterward, but you will be surprised just how much, and in what ways she changed. At her brother’s urging, she returned from Chicago to her home town of Summer Haven, Florida, to live in the old farmhouse her parents had owned, and in which she and her brother had grown up.

As with many such old, abandoned farmhouses, this one was alleged to be haunted. But what’s a little haunted house, after you’ve been attacked and nearly killed by vampires? After some serious cleaning and redecorating, the farmhouse was as good as new, and provided a very homey abode for her and her two children. But things would not stay so homey and welcoming for long. When you survive a vampire attack intended to kill you, the vampires will have some questions for you… and vampires don’t ask nicely.

“Human No Longer” really kind of made me feel stupid. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, and knew what was going to happen next, it would go off in an entirely different direction. When I thought the story was over, I wondered why there were still so many pages left. Obviously, the story was NOT over, but I thought I knew what would happen next. Once again, I was way off base. And that’s a good thing, because Kathryn Meyer Griffith writes a much better story than the one I kept expecting.

The author could not have done a more superb job of creating realistic people and situations. Even her vampires were frighteningly life-like. The lead character was one of the strongest female heroines I’ve encountered. The “fear” factor was off the charts. It had aliens, it had vampires, it had a haunted house, it had ghosts… albeit friendly ones, it had murders, and kidnappings, and arson, and… well, you get the point. Do yourself a big favor: read “Human No Longer”. I guarantee you will find yourself looking for the name “Kathryn Meyer Griffith” again.

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Jenny barely survives the brutal attack that kills her husband and forces her family to return to her childhood home where she once killed vampires. So Jenny is well aware that she is becoming one and that Jeff's killers are seeking her out, threatening her family. She has to learn to adapt to her powers to protect her children from the real monsters.

Although this book is shelved as horror, it's not a blood and gore horror read. It is more of a psychological thriller with vampire bad guys which should give it a wider appeal. Jenny and the other characters are real people that you can relate to with financial problems, kids being bullied at school, losing their jobs, working hard for a living to make ends meet and dealing with grief and change. Even with her new vampire powers, Jenny is a loving mother and sister, not an evil monster and you do root for her. The story does not have a lot of action but it is well written with plenty character development and is not over descriptive. The plot is an interesting take on vampires, asking you if becoming a monster means you have to lose your humanity. I liked the fact that even someone as good as Jenny can struggle to fight her new impulses.

I'm usually more of an all action urban fantasy type of person but I did like this book. I'd have liked a bit more action as I did find it a bit slow in places and it takes a while to really get into the story, but that is more about my personal preference than any fault of the author. It is not meant to be fast paced monster filled urban fantasy. This is a human story about a woman protecting those she loves from herself and the monsters who track her. The author does a good job of telling the story and keeping you interested in what is happening next. She is particularly good at writing her characters which is vital for me as a reader. So for me there are no real negatives to the book connected to the author, her writing or storytelling ability.

There is no serious blood and gore, no sexual content and no constant swearing so this book should appeal to lots of people. I'd recommend it to those who like paranormal thrillers, books with mild horror or paranormal elements, and to those like me who enjoy a different kind of horror or UF.Even if you are not big fans of vampires, I still think this book will appeal. I'll certainly look at more work by this author.

Can a mother’s love beat the odds…

And withstand the unearthly hunger? The heroine of this character driven novel is forced to find out. The author skillfully takes all of us lucky mortals along for the ride as the at times chilling events unfold.

Jenny is the lone survivor of a vicious attack that left her a recently widowed mother of two, desperate to make ends meet in these tough economic times. As well as struggling to keep a deadly secret … she is no longer a mere human. How will she face the challenges that the normal person in these circumstances would face as she and her children have to return to quaint little Florida town of her childhood? All the while trying to juggle a strange new existence, powers she does not understand, and a hunger for blood that if goes unchecked will make her a danger to all that she loves. Even if she can find a way to cope, can she win the battle against the demons following her? Both of the metaphorical and terrifyingly literal variety. This is just a taste of what awaits within the pages of this tale.

This is more of a psychological tale of horror than one that relies on a high factor of gore. A fact that made it a far more enjoyable read for me, I prefer to be scared more than just disgusted. Given that vampire stories have been a hard to resist favorite of mine since I was little, the concept of this book alone was enough to grab my interest. Though the concept may have grabbed me, it was the well-developed characters and intriguing story that held me all the way to the end.

You hope for Jenny and you fall in love with the family and friends that surround her. This book is a worthwhile read for all those out there who do not want their vampires to sparkle or fall in love with teenagers. (Falling for Buffy Summers being a notable exception, who wouldn’t fall for a slayer?)

There are aliens, ghosts and vampires … it was just a couple of shape shifters away from a paranormal hoedown lineup. This would be a series I would not mind continuing.

I love this vampire book. It is about a woman who is attacked. Her husband is killed and she is turned into a vampire. Years before she, her husband and her brother, fought vampires and killed some. Now Jenny is a single mother, recovering from the attack and finding herself changing into a vampire. Imagine her horror at that. Imagine her fear of harming her children. Imagine her love that refuses to give up her children. As you can tell this is not your sparkly, friendly vampire book. The author develops her characters superbly. We know and care about them. It is funny, but, one of the descriptive words that I think of with this book is healing. We are witness to a family healing from a huge loss. You might not think that possible in a vampire story but it is in this one. And it works. However, this is a horror story. Do not be fooled by what I have written so far. There is violence in this book. What we believe are vampires, do kill in it. In horrifying ways. And they kill children. I love that Ms. Griffith has kept the violence on the low end of graphic. It is there, just not like it could have been written. Most of it is suggestive, the way a good horror book is written. We get the set up, our imagination terrifies us and then we get what happened. I love that. I love when the author invites my imagination to play. I am hoping there is a follow up book.

This was a riveting book, well written. I recommend it.
There is violence in the book. There is no sex or bad language.
I read this as a stand alone book, however, it is connected to Vampire Blood. Vampire Blood tells the story of Jenny's first encounter with vampires.

*I received a copy of Human No Longer for review. No promises were made except to give an honest review of my opinion of the book. I received no compensation for this review.*

While celebrating their twelfth anniversary together, Jenny and Jeff Sanders become victims of a bizarre crime as they are preparing to go home. The horrendous attack leaves Jeff dead and Jenny in a temporary coma. When she awakens in the hospital, Jenny returns home to her children in order to heal and grieve. With her husband dead, Jenny and her children must move back to her childhood home - Summer Haven, Florida - into a haunted farm house, situated in the same quiet community where once they had destroyed a family of vampires.

Jenny has no appetite; she's edgy; her eyes hurt. All of these symptoms she initially attributes to trauma and grief. Until one night she can't resist going into the woods or the overpowering urge to drink warm animals' blood. Jenny can no longer deny the truth - her attackers had been vampires.

Now she's becoming what she once reviled. She can't abandon her children, but she must find a way to live in the human world. At night she hunts, hides what she's becoming and attempts to fit in.

Then townspeople begin dying; just like years before. With her blackouts, Jenny fears she may be the killer, or are the culprits actually her vampire attackers? They find her and issue her an ultimatum: join them and become a true vampire - or her family will die...horribly. Jenny resists their influence until the vampires kidnap her children. Then she has to find a way to outwit and ultimately destroy the fiends; rescuing her children from their evil clutches.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were appropriately sympathetic; at least the ones who were supposed to be sympathetic. The plot was extremely intriguing and truly showcased a mother's deep and abiding love for her children. I give this book an A! and am eagerly looking forward to reading the prequel Vampire Blood as soon as I can.

When you lose your husband and spend weeks in a coma, you think things cannot get any worse. But for Jenny it does. Once Jenny wakes from her coma and realizes the situation she and her children are in, the only thing she can do is move back home to Florida. Jenny and the kids move back into the old farmhouse that she grew up in. There, as she modernizes the home and sets about bringing normalcy back to their lives, she is burdened with changes that her body is experiencing. As she struggles with these changes, she begins to realize what these changes could mean. But how is it possible ? She finally has to confide in her brother Joey. If anyone will understand he will.
As Jenny and Joey research and learn more about her changes, Jenny finds out that she, her family and the entire town are in danger. She also realizes that it is upon herself to rid the town of the demons who are wrecking havoc on her town. Does she have the power to do this ? Will she be strong enough to take them down or will she turn and become just like these evil beings ?
Kathryn Meyer Griffith has a unique talent in capturing the readers attention and keeping it throughout the entire story. She takes you to an entirely different place and even though there are monsters, you cant help but want to be right beside Jenny fighting them.
I hope you will take the journey with Jenny and enjoy it as much as I did.
I look forward to reading more from Griffith and getting lost in the next story....

Human No Longer: Jenny Sanders has experienced love and loss and now is in the process of a terrifying change that will alter her for the rest of her days. Trying to balance her new life while still loving and taking care of her 2 children and still be a wonderful sister is pushing her to her limits.
I liked the character of Jenny Sanders, and the husband and children. Actually, I liked all the characters, I felt they were well developed and when/if one died, you felt it. Kathryn Meyer Griffith put a classic spin the vampires, they don't sparkle and they don’t have any real redeeming qualities. They were meant to scare and to haunt your thoughts, even after you've finished. It’s refreshing seeing vampires cast in that classic way, not as a seductress or the moody heart throb, but vicious and murderous.
At about the half way point of the novel I feel it really picked up. I wanted some action and it delivered.
Aside from some grammatical errors and some minor misspelled words, I felt the book was good. I would recommend this piece to others and have. Spot on Kathryn!

Where does Human No Longer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It ranks quite high. I really enjoyed the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Human No Longer?
Jennys' absolute devotion to her kids. She adores them and does everything to keep them safe. I also loved her relationship with her brother. They are so close.

What does Sara Mackie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Sara brings the story alive. Her voice conveyed all the right emotion which is hard to come across when just reading the story.

Any additional comments?
This was more than just a vampire tale. Its a story of survival for a woman who just wants her life back. She is terrified that she will hurt someone and debates leaving. Her love for her kids really shines through though and she knows she never could leave them. This is a character driven story and I loved that. Its not the most action packed book but it's got soul. Katherine Meyer Griffith is such a wonderful writer and I can't wait to read more from her.

* Note - I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Even though Human No Longer has elements of horror it is more of a thriller and be advised these vampires are not your brooding, sexy, misunderstood ones that we have become accustomed to in the media. I enjoyed this story despite Jenny’s severe case of denial, perplexing considering her former dealings with undead creatures. Although this story can be read as a stand alone it is connected to Vampire Blood, which details Jenny’s first encounter with vampires and for those who like to read the whole story I would recommend it. For those who like a good old fashioned vampire story Human No Longer is the book for you. For the entire review and more please see Penny Dreadful Books and Reviews. Human No Longer

This is a great "What if" book. What would you do if you were attacked and then turned into a vampire? Could you adapt? Could you still take care of your family? Could you return to your regular life?

In the story, you follow Jenny as she finds the answers to these questions. Following a brutal attack that leaves her husband dead, Jenny comes out of a coma. On her road to recovery, she discovers that she is becoming a vampire. She has two young children to care for and a life she just wants to be able to live. You learn along the way some of the back story that introduced her to vampires when she was younger. She has to make some hard choices but finds peace with what she has become.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to seeing more books in the storyline.

Gripping story and intriguing characters...

Gripping story and intriguing characters...

Kathryn Meyer Griffin has written an exceptional novel about a woman who is bitten by a vampire and slowly changes into the very thing that she hates the most. Her struggles to come to grips with what she is becoming while maintaining her mortal household normalcy makes for some very intriguing reading. Her characters are strong and believable and her storyline is gripping. I felt strongly for her character, Jenny and was completely wrapped up in her life. This book is really good reading.
I highly recommend this book to all vampire genre readers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. an intriguing story that maintained interest throughout. The battle of priorities- to succumb to the vampiral needs or to resist temptations of the need to have blood and to be the best mother for her children.
language flowed nicely, very easy to read and the characters very likeable and easy to relate to.
The forces of evil and good are evident within this tale, this maintains excitement and wonder at which will prevail. strength of the main character gladly wins over her predicament and though it may continue to be a struggle will, hopefully, always be the upper hand. uplifting story overall.
Thank you so much for the privilege of reading the book :)

I want to start off by saying I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, this book just wasn't for me. It had an interesting take on vampires and had a great concept, but the execution of it, at least for me, was just not there. I felt the author spent too much time on the family dynamic and less time on the action that the book was extremely slow paced, for me anyway. I also felt the characters were a little flat and the way the plot played out was a little predictable. Again, these are my opinions, though. I would recommend you try out the book yourself if you like vampire books, you might like it more.

This was a very fast read, but a good one. There was a book before this that i had not read, but they did enough catching up that it was totally unnecessary to have read it. I may go back and do so. This is the story of a woman who previously had been a vampire fighter, who becomes a vampire, and her struggle to continue living life and not lose her humanity. I can't say too much more without giving things away, but it drew me in and I can't wait for another book. It also gave an explanation for vampires that was totally different than any others I've heard!

Argh. So much potential that was dragged down by poor grammar, awkward sentences and a general lack of editing. Enjoyable characters and an interesting take on the vampire mythos, although it could have been better developed.
