These Inconvenient Fireworks is fanfiction. One Direction fanfiction. Now, if you have a problem with that, don't bother reading the rest of this review.
A couple years ago, my best friend introduced me to One Direction. She asked me to listen to "What makes you beautiful", calling the boys fun and cheeky. Being the cynical bitch I am–and keeping in mind that all the cool people hated 1D, so why should I even listen to one of their songs to form a personal opinion?–I was like "Seriously?! One Direction??? Not you, too!" *gasp* I am also a curious bitch, so I went home and listened to the damn song. And my reaction was something along the lines of "Cool, they do seem fun, but I'm not 14 and their music is not particularly quality." Well, a few days later, I came across a Larry Stylinson video. And that was the end of that. Because Louis and Harry together were beyond adorable and I am a sucker for gay couples. Needless to say, I was a sucker for 1D from then on. I kept following what was going on with Harry & Louis on Tumblr, and to this day, I am convinced they are a couple and their management forbids them to come out. So. I love 1D, they're fun, they're cheeky, they're simple boys who wreak havoc and have a good time wherever they go. I am not in awe of their teenage fangirls who squeal and scream their heads off for them, and I will be the first to admit that their success is based on the fact that they're a cute boyband. Anyway, my point is that I love Louis & Harry the most.
These Inconvenient Fireworks may be fanfiction, but it's very well written, with a strong plot and good character development. I'll even go as far as say it's better than a lot of published books out there. This was my second time reading this and I loved it just as much the second time around. Since I don't want to go into details and discuss the plot, here are the things which make this fanfic AWESOME...
– Louis. Louis and his posh trousers, suspenders and sex hair. Louis with his cynicism, anxiety, and ultimately, his big fucking heart. – Duchess. Lou's grumpy asshole of a cat. – Harry. Charming, lovely Harry, with his curly hair and devilish dimples. Being a good fucking person and finding his way into Lou's heart. – Zayn. With his ridiculous hair, his love for literature and his hilarious plans to impress a certain fireman, Zayn was wonderful. – Liam. Fireman in question, and a good person all around. Also, clueless towards Zayn's efforts. – Niall. Being... well, Niall, who loves food and lights up a room. – Haz & Lou's families were great and I loved them. – Everything. That should about cover it.
Who really wrote this? I would love to purchase more books by the authors. This was brilliant! It made me laugh, made me cry, and I just loved it. The quality of writing was better than many popular authors I have read. I actually did not realize it was fan fiction and the characters names were the same as the members of One Direction. The authors should change the names a little and get this published. Please write more, I love the writing style and the character development!
I am not a fan of One Direction -- I wouldn't have even recognized the names to know that the characters in the book were named after a boy band -- and I think that is one of the things that made me able to appreciate this book on its own merits. I guess technically it's fanfic, but since I don't know these men, to me it read like great original fiction.
The book mainly follows Louis Tomlinson, a high school drama teacher in Manchester, England, through a year of his life. He meets Harry Styles, a uni student who is finishing up a degree in photography, and is the assistant footy (that's soccer for us American types) coach at the school. Louis is the king of one-night stands and doesn't believe in love -- so although he is very attracted to Harry, he tries to keep their friendship platonic. Theirs is a very slow build, but all the better for it.
Zayn Malik is an english teacher and author on the side who is apparently sex on legs, and pulls whoever he wants, whenever he wants, but he is in some ways Louis' opposite. He believes in true love, and destiny, and he sees that destiny in Liam, a local firefighter. He sets out to get him, and his adventures to catch his eye are hysterical.
Finally, there is Niall Horan. He is the orchestra leader at the school, and part time DJ, straight, but best mates with Louis and Zayn.
This is a very long book, but so worth reading. I read in one review that it was "clearly written by an American" but if so, I think the author caught the British flavor extremely well, and I certainly couldn't tell. It is full of humor, personal growth and revelation, hot sex, angst, but its central theme is always the friendship between the five men. I loved it. Despite being so long, it is a favorite reread for me. I would love to know more about this author, and would absolutely look for more of their work!
It's probably the best book -especially as far as fanfic goes- and the writing is both beautiful and hilarious. You don't even have to like One Direction to absolutely fall in love with story. That's why it is a complete shame that it seems to be impossible to get your hand on an actual book copy of it. I would re-read it in a heartbeat. So if anyone has a link to buy an actual book copy of it let me know!. xx
I've been wanting to read this but I can't find it anywhere! Can someone please help! I've tried the larry library links and google but can't seem to find it! Help! Please!
O.k. so this 1D fanfic is like a full length novel. It's looong and gets a but slow at some points but I adored the entire book. The sex scenes make up for any lagging. The carwash scene? UNF. The french maid costume scene? BY FAR the hottest sex scene ever. UNF UNF.
Also, the POV's are a bit weird in the begining, and it switches between 2 MC's that are friends. Once I got into the groove of reading it I didn't stop.
I first read TIF back in the day when my One Direction obssession was in its prime and I loved it. However, I have recently come across my copy of it and decided to have a re-read, as a 26 year old solidly out of her 1D obsession, and it's still bloody fantastic. Taking away the fact it's a Larry Fanfic, the story itself is actually wonderful. The fluff and the angst and the flirting all killed me and I was begging for more of it as the pages went on. And if smut is your thing, you're going to love this book. Definitely popping my copy back on the shelf for another re-read at a later date!
In my opinion, the Bible of Larry shippers, just above Room 317. The talent of the two writers is utterly astounding as These Inconvenient Fireworks is a humorous, touching, and emotional AU. There's no flaw in its many pages. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves Harry/Louis and the band as a whole.
i wish the authors hadn't gone into hiding because they might have been published and then i could tell people that this is my all time favorite book without having to worry about judgement that it's a fanfic. also, it'd be easier to convince my friends to read it but alas, they refuse. i don't care if you've never even heard of one direction; this is a must read. leagues better than any contemporary i've ever read and i have truly fallen in love with many. i do have a paperback copy of this that i bought(and you can buy too) from lulu.com. there is also a free pdf version available on the internet somewhere. please please read it. the characters are original and hilarious and there is not a single one you won't fall in love with. it will rip your heart out but it will definitely give it back almost completely intact. you'll cry and cry and cry, different kinds of tears. never in my life have i read a book so easy to pick back up after only weeks of finishing it again. it's never a chore to read any certain parts over again because it is that well written and developed. even with my favorite published book, i skip to my favorite parts. in this one, i read the whole thing beginning to end when i feel like relaxing. it'll make you laugh and cry every single time; it'll bring out nearly every emotion on the spectrum. you will have to sit back and curse the universe for not revealing the author so they can get published and sell the movie rights because there are some cinematic masterpieces of scenes in this book(carwash, mojitos, the epic you-know-which one toward the end). ugh please please lock away all your judgements and just read this. please. like i literally typed out a whole scene on a typewriter and framed it because the writing is that epic ok.
This is truly the most beautifully written fanfic I have ever read. This fanfic has correct grammar, chapters are a perfect length- not to long not to short- has an advance vocabulary and a breathtaking story plot. It has a little bit of everything, with humor, romance, and drama. Bringing all the characters from One Direction makes it that much more exciting. The author sticks to all of the boys true personalities. It has both joy plus heartbreak. You don't need to be a Larry nor a Ziam shipper to fall in deep adoration with this fanfic but trust me when I say you will once you finish this story. In fact you will want to read this fanfic over and over again, and every time you will laugh, punch a pillow, cry and smile like a dork.
So this is obviously a One Direction fanfic. I might as well admit that I've been reading fanfics since I was around 13, haha. In a way this certainly doesn't feel like a fanfic. It's incredibly well written and is up there alongside my favorite books. It's very long but it still didn't take me that long to read mainly because it's so good it's impossible to put down.
I liked it because it's really well written, the characterization is on point, it's hilarious (Zayn and that wet t-shirt contest scene, anyone? I laughed myself half to death!!!) and the romance build-up was very nicely paced. Bonus points for scenes that made me want to throw myself off a building or run into a burning building.
A CLASSIC. This is the one book that should be made into a movie. That scene at the carwash and Pour Some Sugar On Me - this has to be translated to screen somehow!
This was such a good read!! I honestly got pretty frustrated with both of them in the middle of this, but I think that’s just a testament to how good the writing was. I found myself just sitting there and reading for hours at a time because it kept me so invested!
I read it years ago when initially published and it is still my favorite fic. I recently purchased a physical copy, and I’m truly enjoying it all over again! I would highly recommend to literally anyone.
Yes, it's a 1D fanfic. Get over it. It's not important. They could change their names and you wouldn't even know.
I usually don't read fanfiction, I'm not really sure why, I just don't. But I kept reading opinions about this one and decided to give it a go. I only didn't read it in one sitting because it's large and I do have a job and a household to run.
I cried while reading this. I cried a lot. Because the characters moved me, but mostly because I recognized my younger self in so many things, things I didn't know I still had inside me and I guess I will always have. I cried for all the wrong decisions I made and I cried because I will never be young and in love again and because I can't change the mistakes I made.
And I cried tears of joy in the end, because I completely fell in love with these characters.
Don't get me wrong, I laughed out loud many times, because the dialogue is well written and witty and funny and you just can't put the bloody thing down!
I don't really know who wrote this, but I do hope they keep doing it and that I have a chance to read it.
Look, I realize I should feel some semblance of shame for putting fanfiction on my Goodreads. I have never done it before. But three reasons: 1) this is good/real/well-written enough to already have its own page on Goodreads; 2) it was almost 600 pages fuck that I'm getting credit for it!; and 3), most importantly, it was really really good and could actually be a published book. This was excellently done. I laughed; I cried; I felt weirdly lustful over gay men having sex. It was everything I have ever wanted in a Larry fanfic and takes a place in my top 3!
Started this book never having read fan fiction ever in my life. I was convinced I’d hate it, that it would be immature YA scenarios from a tumblr obsessed teen. I was so, so wrong. The narrator has such a clear, funny, fully-realized voice. I was unbelievably impressed; it has become one of my favorite books of all time. I want to read everything this author has to write. In the meantime… I’ll be re-reading TIF for forever
It is actually here!!! This is my one favourite fic of all times, it was exquisitely written, elegantly plotted, and amazingly put together , I still read it whenever I feel down or sad , brings up all the good ol' memories Back from 3 years ago and a sure way to lighten up my mood in a matter of minutes
I may be embarrassed that I have to admit to the world I read this but also I’m kind of not because literally how dare this be so freaking good? It has absolutely no right. Also I put time into reading this so it will go on my end of the year goal 🔪
so yeah ive read this months ago when it was still on the livejournal and this was beautiful, and funny and just.. read it. You don't even have to be a fan to enjoy it, its that awesome.
this is the best thing i have ever read to date and if the author ever releases something else i will personally wallpaper it on my first born's nursery walls
