Abused and frightened, Juliette St. Claire has never known love or kindness in her eighteen years. Meeting Tristan LaRocque changes that, infuriating her cruel boyfriend, Nathaniel Jensen. But Tristan is powerless to help Juliette when merely trying could result in her death.
As threats to her life intensify, Juliette uncovers the mystical secrets they have both kept from her, and she must make some tough choices about the men she thought she knew.
Fiercely passionate and profoundly riveting, Sacred Blood is an outstanding story that will leave you rethinking love, friendship, and everything you hold dear.
My wife got a copy of this book to test read. She hasn't had the time yet, but I have. I went in expecting another Twilight. Another little girl who things she has to be a boyfriend and no personality so she can assume his. Another fake heartthrob who is a controlling, compulsive jerk. Another love-triangle where the top point is better off ditching both of the legs and finding herself before losing herself to someone not worthy of ay relationship. Another books that makes bad situations with men who control and assault look like heroes who love so much they can't control themselves. As a man, this says to me we can't control ourselves.
What I got was a well-told story with compelling characters and situations that tug at the heart strings. Even at her lowest, the heroine of the story has more personality than you usually see in novels. She wasn't defined by one characteristic, and refused to stay a victim. By the end of the book, She had shattered the box any other author would have kept her in and earned the title of heroine.
In the opening scene, her boyfriend's behavior was slightly confusing, just as it would have been for her. He's hitting her, but kisses her before leaving. This is a very real touch. This is the only time he shows any softness to her, but it's to get his way later. She doesn't know he's a werewolf and learns later.
Juliette leaving this creep left me breathless. I have daughters about Juliette's age. Her flight was well-crafted and very real.
The friend she goes to isn't a perfect man, but I like that. But he is a good one. I wouldn't mind my daughters marrying someone like him. Smart, driven, respectful to the women in his life. This isn't a vampire who fell in love because he wanted to make her his food. Tristan knew Juliette a long time. The gradual love they developed is believable. No love at first site, or first bite if you want to get into vampire cliches. He and his family are very different from any other vampire I've ever read.
This is the first I've read of vampires that can go in the sun with regular people and no one can tell. They're the first with beating hearts. The reason this happens is genius. It feeds into their learning about the novel's other types who can't go in the sun. The different creation methods make the difference. I didn't expect the twists in the different types of vampires. That was intriguing. I could feel what the main clan felt when they learned they weren't the only type. Wow. It takes talent to make the reader feel what the characters feel.
I liked that the man didn't save the day as they almost always do. They worked as partners, but at the end, in that rad battle, Juliette took the upper hand. The ending of the book took me by surprise. Subtle clues to it were in the chapters right before, but they didn't jump out until the end. The epilog is another piece of genius. Now I don't want to give spoilers more than I have.
This is a book I recommend to all women and most men. Juliette and Tristan are characters we should model, not Bella and Edward or the worse Ana and Christian.
The author doesn't make claims that this edition we have is the final version. If she gets published, editors always demand a lot of changes. There are a few spots where the point of view is slightly off, but this doesn't detract from the story. In the stage we got it, it already beats Twilight, 50 Shades, and many other books I can think of. When this book gets published, I won't be surprised to see it on the New York Times Bestseller list and made into a film. I hope Alys' website is true and there will be 2 more books to make this a trilogy. I'll be first in line buying them for the young women in my life.
After me & Alys contacted each other online we created a friendship and she asked me to read Sacred Blood. After the first chapter I was hooked, desperate to know what happens next. The story is unique, it has romance and supernatural all rolled into one. It's not another twilight, or vampire diaries or anything like that. She has created her own world of supernatural, it's fresh. I recieved 3 or 4 chapters at a time and read through them all as they came. I didn't stop and start, which is what makes a good story. I wanted to know Juliette's future with Tristan, if they found each other through all the problems they faced. Their story captured me as well, an epic romance entwined with all these mysteries. You are given all the right imagination description, which is used fantastically. When they slept in the woods, you could feel how cold she was, the noise of a twig breaking underneath the footpath, it really is capturing. Fantastic story, fantastic ending & epilogue to the next book. I'll recommend to anyone as it's beautiful. Well done Alys.
I've read quite a few vampire books, and frankly most of them suck. The vampires are too supernatural, the story line is a copy of another story line, the heroes are uber macho to the point of being emotionless, and the heroines are so wimpy that I want to smack them.
So what's different about Sacred Blood and why would I recommend it to a teen or adult?
First, the vampires are cool. Their different personalities and abilities make them very likeable. Second, the storyline is interesting and wasn't grabbed from another vampire book. It delivers the right amount of suspense and action and is a wonderful "coming of age" story, where the heroine, Juliette, is concerned. Third, Tristan is a real hero with fears, wants, and regrets. Not a rock. Thank Goodness!! Fourth, Juliette is a great heroine who rises out of a traumatic experience and bleak upbringing to become a capable, brave person. Fifth, interesting and scary villains that are like werewolves but not exactly. They're can become wolf-like creatures if they wear wolf skins. They are actually skin walkers. The main villain and Juliette's tormenter, Nate, is a real creep who knows how to play psychological games with his victims.
Alys B. Cohen wrote a great first novel, and I hope she has many more to come.
Sacred Blood is one of the best novels I've read in a very long time. The characters are well developed, you truly come to love the heroes, and detest the villains. The story is full of life. It's realistic, something rare in sci-fi/fantasy novels. You can imagine a story like Sacred Blood actually taking place if Vampires and Werewolves were real. I really identified with the main character, Juliette. She blossoms through the story froma little girl, frightened and abused, to a strong woman, willing to fight for those she loves. I highly recommend this Novel to all who enjoy genre fiction.
Oh my God! A book where the heroine gets away from a jerk, kicks ass, and is strong! Why don't we have more like this? I know my sister's copy is a beta and it might change between now and the final, but I hope not. I really cared about Juliette and Tristan is such a good man who isn't too perfect to be believed. The supernatural was just enough without being so much it overshadowed the rest of the story. There are supposed to be more books in this trilogy and I hope Alys does it. There doesn't have to be, but I want to read more!
It took a long time, but I finally finished the entire book - for the third time. Alys did a wonderful job, taking the characters on an emotional journey, filled with suspense, action, and some heartbreaking decisions.
What I loved most? it shows a woman learning her own strengths, and who she is. Not how she changed someone else, or made a bad boy into Mr. Perfect. But instead deciding her own needs and wants were valid.
