When Slater McGuire spotted a figure in the dark woods, he was prepared to kill or be killed. The stakes were high when it came to kidnapping, and he was out of his league. He was an expert on security systems, but when his friend told him about the little girl who'd been snatched from her parents, he couldn't say no. Slater's search for the child had brought him to this tense confrontation with an armed woman whose eyes were as green as the forest that surrounded them.
Joy Clarebridge was a professional hunter, but men like Slater were not her game. Kidnappings were her specialty - especially kidnappings involving children. Her sources had warned her of Slater's presence in the woods, but she had not expected to find a willing partner in the tall man with black eyes. The child was the only thing that mattered, and if Slater could speed the rescue, she would work with him.
As the case began to snowball, Slater was puzzled by his cunning partner. What deep, dark secret drove this elegant woman to put her life on the line, time and again? If they survived this deadly adventure, Slater was determined to solve the riddle of Joy.

If I could give this zero stars, I would. It started out promising with a kidnapping but that was solved within the first few chapters. The rest of the book was just the couple recovering at a country estate doing nothing interesting.
When Slater McGuire received a call from a friend asking for his help finding a kidnapped child, he could not refuse to help. A security expert, he knew he was out of his league but he had to try. He never imagined he'd wind up teaming with the leading authority on finding kidnapped children, J.M. Clarebridge... Joy. Or that he'd fall head over heels for this secretive, emotionally withdrawn lady whose darkest memories had made her retreat from the world & live in the darkness. He is determined to find out her secrets & draw her back into the land of the living. What follows is a harrowing tale of intrigue, danger, loss & ultimately love.
You won't be able to put this book down. I've read it at least 100 times & it still moves me. Sometimes to tears, sometimes to laughter. This is definitely a must have for your book collection. It has drama, suspense, comedy & romance. It's well written & so engaging you will be drawn into this world & come to feel like you are a part of it. You'll come to love these characters & want to read their story over and over again. If you read this book, you won't regret it!
The story of two lost people who find each other. Uh-huh.
Actually, the premise is good. A former government agent is persuaded to take one last case and find a kidnapped young girl. While tracking the kidnappers he runs into a mysterious woman and her three search dogs, also looking for the same girl. So far, so good. Then it starts to fall apart.
The kidnapping is solved almost as an after-thought. She is wounded in the retrieval of the kidnap victim, he takes her away to a secluded place where she can begin to heal and he falls in love with her. The dogs somehow disappear into thin air, she claims she is cursed because everyone she loves dies, he insists that he won't, and then he is wounded in another plot-line, and she learns to loves again. Oh brother.
I would like to know what happened to those dogs, though.
