I have re-read this book and I found it as wonderful a read as the first time around. It is a great read when it is pooring outside and the only light in the room is a small reading lamp.

I really enjoyed this book. It actually scared the crap out out of me. Which is funny because. I have read much scarey books. I thin it was the suspense.

[Spoilers] Shannon Drake has added another element to her vampire series: The Alliance. This is apparently a combination vampire slayer/watcher organization that’s been around since the beginning of time. Our newest heroine, Tara, is the genetic inheritor of her family’s membership in this alliance. However, this does not make her as cool as Buffy. She’s got the dreams about vampires, but no super-powers, although she might be a little better at killing them than the average human. She’s also got a guy hanging around protecting her from the latest super-old, super-powerful vampire to have been recently awakened. This guy, Brent, may or may not be a vampire.
This could have been a really fascinating element with flashes back to the grandfather’s inception into the Alliance and historical explanations of the order, however, none of this is explained until the last chapter. Tara spends most of the book completely disbelieving there are any such things as vampires, and protesting long and loudly about how everyone around her is insane. Fortunately she’s still “compelled” to take steps to protect herself and her family, otherwise this idiot would have died in the first chapter.
Drake also doesn’t explain much of anything else that’s going on. Characters have long interactions with each other being described only as “a man,” and “the woman” so the reader has no idea who’s actually involved here. Drake is also ambiguous about who is good and who is evil. We know for sure that Tara is good because she’s the heroine, and also some people from the second book in the series, but that’s it. Even the hero’s relative trustworthiness is cast into doubt, and the heroine isn’t sure she likes him throughout much of the book (even though she’s “compelled” by him and also sleeps with him). I think this is intended to heighten suspense, but it’s just confusing and makes me care a lot less about what happens to these characters.
The eventual climax is really the only good part of the book. I was left wanting by some of the “big vampire fight scene(s)” in the other books in this series, but this one really delivers. It almost makes reading the rest of this 400 page crap-fest worth it. Drake (who is also Heather Graham) should really just stick with writing historical romance, because her foray into the paranormal sub-genre is extremely disappointing.

Disclaimer: I read this with no prior knowledge of the Alliance Vampire series. Found this in a used book store with high hopes.

I put this book down with about 100 pages left. It seemed like it required you to know the prior books in the series to appreciate this book. When you love a book series, and you get that one in the middle that's only meant to explain the world in more detail to set up the next. So it's boring and you're struggling to finish. This felt like that.

A majority of the book is just slow and attempting to create a menacing build up, but just couldn't hold my attention to follow-through.

Still not as great-great as the first two in the series, but great-good. I thought Tara to be a strong female character, who knew her own strength and still pushed on. I thought it was planned out, and you never really know who the 'bad guy' is, but you still manage to figure it out by the end. What I like is the ties from the past to the present and what it means for the characters.

I had a strong suspicion I was picking up a part of a series when I saw this book, but decided to read it anyway, hoping I wouldn't be too lost. I was correct on both counts - turns out "Realm of Shadows" is book four in Shannon Drake's Alliance Vampires series, and for those like me who hadn't read any of the other books, there wasn't an overabundance of allusions to past events/people so the novice can jump right in.

As to the story itself, it was mildly interesting, but nothing a veteran of paranormal romances wouldn't have encountered in other stories. Urban legends about mythological creatures (vampires and werewolves) hews pretty much to what we know from popular media. The pace of the story was just fine - not too fast, nor too slow. The dialogue though, felt a little stilted to me. The language seemed somewhat formal. It's logical for the long-lived characters to speak that way, as they've lived for centuries, but even the modern characters were overly wordy.

One major way this book was unlike its distaff members in this genre involved the love (read: sex) scenes. They were very tame, with non-explicit descriptions. It was as though readers were reading the scenes through a gauze curtain, so as to spare the sensibilities of those who don't care to have erotica injected in their paranormal-urban fantasy romance. I personally didn't care either way, but wanted to point this out, as it was a big departure from other PNR I've read.

My final analysis was this book was neither great, nor dreck. It was an average read, with an average plot, filled with average characters. I suppose the biggest indictment from me is that "Realm of Shadows" didn't care to make we want to read the other books in the series. One book was enough for me to get a sense of what Vampire Alliance is about, and one was just fine.

This was okay. I enjoyed it, but I can't say I loved it.

I picked this up for $3 at a used bookstore, so I'm not complaining at all. It has some interesting aspects, such as being set in Paris and area.

The characters were fine, although none of them really grabbed hold of me and drew me in or connected to me.

The action was good, as was the pacing, with some very evil villains.

The romance in this fell totally flat for me. I just didn't buy that these two people fell for each other as quickly, and with so little time together and opportunity to get to know one another as they had based on what else was going on.

But I did read this all the way to the end, and it did have excitement and action. It was okay.

God I couldn't finish this one. The writing was horrible! It just didn't make sense. It felt like a mental patient wrote this book. Just a bunch of rambling. I laughed when I read someone's comment "this is after all a very gifted author we are talking about". Seriously?

I absolutely hated the heroine. She seemed like too much of a Debby Do Right to me. Her hatred of the hero was over the top. He was nothing but kind to her and she did keep mentioning to herself that he was not the murderer. So why in the world all the hating???? Made no sense.

Wow, this was a waste of time! This whole 400 page book could have been a mediocre novella. As it was it was a bad, drawn out melodrama that had nothing really happen for the first 300 pages, then had a very anti-climactic climax, then had one of the the lamest epilogues/ tie-ups that I have encountered in a long time. I realize that this is psuedonominously written by the famous Heather Graham but it stunk, plain and simple.

Better than the last one

The editing was cleaner but there were still errors in the digital conversion. The lack of transitional spacing between scene changes made it a bit clumsy to read. Good story though. Nice apology for leaving Rick behind in a previous story.

Realm of Shadows
(Vampire Saga Book #4)
by Shannon Drake (aka Heather Graham)

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Every Nightmare Has Its Beginning

In an ancient churchyard just outside Paris, archeologists uncover an ancient tomb certain they have stumbled onto the find of the century. But something goes very wrong as the tomb is opened. Something too frightening to imagine...and too terrible to utter.

For American visitor Tara Mason, the romantic city of her dreams has suddenly turned sinister. For she has heard the blood-curdling screams in the churchyard and knows that she must run away--from the powerful stranger chasing after her...and from a nightmare she can't be sure is real or imagined.

At the country estate where she has sought refuge, the shadowy man reappears. He calls himself a guardian, sworn to protect the innocent from an evil most never see. And Tara will have to trust him, because that evil has seen her...and won't stop until it claims her. body and soul.

Tara is moving to France for a bit to take care of her ailing Grandpapa, Jacques DeVant, with her cousin, Ann. Yet, on the first day, her Grandpapa talks her into investigating an archeological dig going on within a local church in the village. Her visit turns out tragically when what is inside the discovered coffin of Louisa de Montcrasset disappears and one of the diggers ends up brutally murdered. Now Tara must, begrudgingly, keep her visit to the dig secret from the police but also the public due to the tough advice from a mysterious friend of her Grandpapa, Brent Malone. He's dark, insanely handsome, oddly knows more about all the strange activity going on in the village around Tara's family chateau than anyone else and she cannot stop her attraction to him upon his ever visit. Can Tara accept the truth of what exactly is causing these shadows to emerge throughout her Grandpapa's village while believing in this mythical "Alliance" that began during WWII?

I had high hopes for this book since the back description sounded intriguing, but sadly it lagged to much and I couldn't finish it in full (not just yet!) I got bored quite easy while reading this and had to skip on to something new to spice up my reading habit before I got into a lull. I did get to page 296 out of a 414 page story, so not too shabby. The story wasn't too bad, but it did skip around to a lot of places with too many new characters brought up too infrequently that it made the story flow unsmoothly and just felt choppy overall.

The relationship between Tara & Brent wasn't anything special as well. I didn't feel sparks between them and had hoped their romantic scenes would have added some spice to the story, but nope! Usually Heather Graham's (aka Shannon Drake's) stories don't have too much heat going on in the bedroom department, but this one seemed to lack even less (except for the murdering parts). Plus, I'm not a fan of books involving Police characters (or any other correctional institutional figures) so Inspector Javet didn't really fascinate me at all and he actually took away some of my interest from the tale during his crude interactions with Tara or Brent.

Likes: The historical flashbacks to WWII were interesting!

Dislikes: It just felt like parts of the story were dragged out way past what they were meant to be and that turned me off.

This book turned out to be part four of six of the 'Alliance Vampires' series and one of the earlier works of Heather Graham. It shows.
White the writing itself is as competent as always - this is after all a very gifted author we are talking about - the characters are fleshed out and the locations described to make the reader feel s/he is actually there. However, he way the story was laid out is somewhat disconcerting. Let me explain what I mean by that.
There are quite a number of people involved in the storyline that are introduced - some directly and some more obscurely. There are the main characters that are named and described right away but then Heather also introduces shadowy folk who appear to have no connection to the mystery at hand. So far, so good - this is, after all, a suspense novel. What did irk me after a while was that the story of one person was described and, after only a few pages, someone completely different and, at times, unrelated became the focal point. And after going through this 'procedure' a number of times and never really getting much of anyone's point of view before the next section came up, made the reading in general somewhat difficult and tiresome - especially trying to remember everything that is happening, where, when and to whom. To put it simple - the story does feel 'hacked' and in pieces at times.
Don't get me wrong - the tale itself is interesting and intriguing, and I am glad to have persevered to read the entire book. I have to admit though that there were times when I was tempted to simply read the end and be done with it. Well, as already mentioned, this series was published a while ago and Heather Graham has definitely 'honed her skills' in the meantime. All in all, the book is well worth reading and rest assured that all 'leads' will come together in the end and make sense.

Traveling back to a little town outside of Paris to visit her grandfather, Tara just did not know what she was getting in to. She did not believe her grandfathers fantastic stories of vampires but when a murder takes places and strange things start happening she has to quickly figure out just who she can trust. She might just have to rely on one of the creatures of the night.

The detective was quick to give up information about the five other missing people.

Tara is extremely stubborn when she gets an idea into her head. It seems to be a common theme with the heroines in drakes novels. Tara seems quite calm for someone that was just in the vicinity or a murderer.

The heroes of Drake's novels seem quite sure of themselves. I'm not sure if it is just with this series or that they are vastly older and therefore more assured of themselves.

In this book I was having problems with all of the different view points and shifts in character. It happened in the other books but I was not as distracted by it as much.

This book was difficult to read. There were a lot of times where the author would just go on about a character in a flashback and only refer to them as he or she. Sometimes it wasn't obvious that it was a flashback and this just served to confuse the situation even more. For the first third of the book I thought there were twice as many character as there really were. Another thing that I found irritating was the way the author kept using... Yeah, ellipses. They were everywhere! On just 2 pages I counted eleven uses. That seemed to be about the average unfortunately.

Damnit, once again I picked up in the middle of a series. It wasn't too bad though. Characters from previous books showed up, hinted at previous stories that have happened. But didn't pull away from the book or leave me confused.
The plot was good, killer vampire lady gets dug up, starts killing people, a group of people are going to stop her. I didn't yell at any of the characters for being stupid. And I didn't want to throw the book across the room when I finished reading it because it pissed me off. So, four stars, man.

Due to her French grandfather Jacque's insistence, American visitor Tara Adair is investigating the progress of an archeological dig in a small village outside of Paris. Jacque is certain that an old evil is soon to be unleashed when an ancient tomb is discovered onsite. Tara does not believe in such nonsense, but when one of the workers is murdered in a most gruesome way, Tara may have to start listening to her grandfather's talk of an old Alliance and vicious predators of the night.

3 & 1/2 stars. Shannon Drake's ability to transport me to a different time and place is what makes her books appealing. She has a way of making a book's setting come alive. I'm looking forward to reading the fifth book in the series because it's set in Salem, MA- a place I've always wanted to visit.

I found this book underwhelming. There were parts where I wanted to keep reading to find out who was good/evil, but by the end, I had to push myself to finish. Not one of my favorites...not sure if I will read any other in the series...

Basically everyone except Sean and Maggie appear in this Paris-set book. This time, there is no vampire-human romance.... There are wolves.

Resistant to the idea of vampires and the Alliance, Tara almost makes herself easy prey for the two older vampires. The final showdown is thrilling.
