Sandra Scoppettone first emerged as one of the best hard-boiled mystery writers using the name Jack Early for her first three novels that included A Creative Kind of Killer (1984) that won the Shamus Award from the Private Eye Writers of America for best first novel. She had started writing seriously since the age of 18 when she moved to New York from South Orange, New Jersey. Scoppettone in the 1960s collaborated with Louise Fitzhuh and in the 1970s wrote important young adult novels. The Late Great Me depicting teenage alcoholism won an Emmy Award in 1976. Her real name was revealed in the 1990s with the start of a series featuring PI Lauren Laurano. Scoppettone shares her life with writer Linda Crawford.

Lascia un po' di amaro in bocca, un senso di oppressione e sconforto questo romanzo di Sandra Scoppettone. Nuovamente una donna forte nel ruolo di protagonista, uno sceriffo in uno stato del sud degli stati uniti.
Uno sceriffo coinvolto in prima persona nelle indagini su due omicidi che si collegano alla scomparsa e morte di sua figlia ed ad altri casi avvenuti in altre contee e stati vicini. Si respirano alcune atmosfere simili a quelle che a volte compaiono nelle ultime indagini della dottoressa scarpetta con il mondo della "giustizia" istituzionale, corrotto e oscuro.
Non del tutto convincente, ammorbidito in parte dalle vicende personali e dalle descrizioni di interazioni e normalità di relazione che ben riescono alla scoppettone. In realtà il romanzo pare acerbo, non del tutto completo.

Avvincente, ma la gran parte dei rapporti umani sono buttati lì, ci sono cambiamenti ed evoluzioni senza premesse.
Ad esempio Jack potrà mai sposare Lucia un mese dopo che sua moglie è stata uccisa e lui è il principale indiziato? Mi pare stiracchiato.

A little tired of murder mysteries at the moment so I was ready to be finished with it. I thought I knew the murderer before halfway through, and I was right.
