Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
I don't personally understand how this was as popular with the young home audience as it was. I thought it was dull, dated and too talking-toy-based (maybe a Toy Story fan would view it differently).
But my views are completely irrelevant, it seems, because this book has been the big nightly draw for a couple of weeks now. It was already being happily devoured when we discovered that a favourite local librarian had enjoyed it when she was a girl, and of course it attained legendary status from then on. I have been tasked with finding the same omnibus edition for our home library so we can "keep it, forever and ever, and not give it back!". Go figure.
This was a recommendation from a coworker. I love asking people what their favourite childhood books were - such a great way to try books you might never otherwise stumble upon. I suspect it was a favourite of my coworker's mum that she read to her own daughter.. and probably one her mum's mum liked, judging by the coal scuttles, nursery, ink bottles, fireplace-for-heating and gaslamps in the passage.
3 stars because I didn't see the appeal, but I'm sure the small home audience would enthusiastically grant it AWLL THE STWARS.
Our family got on an Enid Blyton kick last year. I started reading the Amelia Jane collection to my two youngest kids, thinking they would most enjoy it. However, as it turns out, Blyton's writing style is crowd pleasing and before I knew it, all of my kids were into the stories with my oldest *asking* for it to be read.
Amelia Jane is a very naughty doll and is constantly getting into trouble with the other toys in the nursery. She is rude and unkind and drives everyone up the wall but eventually always gets her comeuppance. It's a great series of books to read aloud to teach children to be kind in general. It's a great read to read to specific children who need the reminder that the way that they choose to treat others has consequences both for good and for evil.
I highly recommend this read - or any other book by Enid Blyton. She's not to be missed!
She's big! She's bad! She's the terror of the toy-cupboard!
Amelia Jane is an extremely difficult doll. She plays lots of tricks on the other toys, and gets up to all kinds of mischief. The other toys try to teach her a lesson - but nothing can make Amelia Jane behave herself for long!
Whoa! Three volumes in one, such a fantastic read. Each story is brief, so you don't leave it unfinished, making it an excellent book for children to read. Fun, humour, adventure, joy, and sorrow abound, but above all, it's a simple book to read. I am looking forward to reading the next book by Enid Blyton.
This book was boring. Its written for older kids but its about a puppet…! Nothing interesting happens, its the same thing over and over again. Jane is naughty and then she promises to not ever be naughty again and then she is naughty again…
Read with Beth. She was enthralled. We read all 3 over a period of about 2 months. Beth loved hearing the stories of the toys in the nursery. It was a great first book to read together. Our start on chapters books together :-)
Amelia Jane is naughty to all the other toys. The toys don't like it. They have tried everything they can to stop her, but nothing works, she always comes back! A brilliant read.
read this collection a lot when I was younger, all the short stories are fun and give good lessons. Maybe that's why I was given this book as a kid lmao.
Maybe it's because I read these stories one after another, but I found them repetitive and rather boring... I think I might have to re-think again in a couple of years whether or not I would want to read these to my kids as a bedtime story... Thing is, I keep on wondering what would I have thought as a child, reading or being read these stories to? I think I wouldn't mind acting like Amelia, what with the other toys being so mean, straight-laced and hypocritical! They keep on saying how bad and naughty Amelia is, and do all sorts of these bad-ness themselves to take revenge or to teach her a lesson. Also the stories keep on ending with "yes, Amelia will be good for a while, but no one believes that she will stay good!" It's such a frustrating branding of naughtiness that I, in my current thoughts and idealism, wouldn't want to imprint on my young ones (when I have them, that is!) Hmm... but like I said, I might re-think this over in a couple of years time. But for now, I don't like these stories and am rather surprised and dissapointed by them, considering how much I liked and grew up with the other Enyd Blyton's stories.
the book was one of the best that i"ve read. Enid Blyton is one of my favourite authors, whose books i love to read. I love all the characters in the book. Amelia Jane, at the end of every story, she will be good. at the beginning at every story, she goes back to her bad ways.
Always happy to share a childhood fave with my three, especially when they wind up loving it too. Bit sad that Golly has been omitted from this updated edition though, he was one of my favourite characters.
WOW! Just WOW! What a great read, 3 books in 1. It's a great read for kids to listen to as each story is short so you don't leave it not finished. Full of fun, humour, adventure, happiness , sadness but most of all it a easy read. Looking forward to reading another Enit Bliton book.
This is about a very noughty doll called Amelia Jane who lives in a nursery with other toys. All the toys are nice to her but Amelia Jane is mean to them.
I used to read this book, back when I was about 8 or 9 years old. To be honest, this was the main reason why my love for more mature novels developed. I recommend this to every young kid.
