What was it like to live in ancient Rome? Why not let Julius Caesar tell you about it? Youll read about his rise to power as well as what living in Ancient Rome was like. A postscript explains what happened to Caesar and why he shouldve been a bit more worried about the Ides of March!
This biography simplifies the political career of Caesar and the cultural context of his time. Important events are not written in detail, the narrator prefers to reveal the feelings and motivations of Caesar rather than his accomplishments and failures.
The biography is fictitiously narrated by Julius Caesar, so it is biased all throughout in his own favor. At the very end, the author makes sure to clarify that Caesar was extremely selfish and did not obey the common laws of his day. I would prefer that children learn more about this ruler than just the fact that he was arrogant and was murdered for his ideals.
Since this is nonfiction, it's clear that I enjoyed it, but I would only recommend it to young children who are interested in short, simple stories. I want to find a biography that goes into a little bit more depth about the work of Caesar and the political climate he grew up in.
