Will the strength of Emma's love be enough to bring her husband back from the horrors of war?
A quick enjoyable love story, just what I wanted before going to bed. Its the great book to cuddle under the blankets and read. My one complaint was that the hero speaks completely in Scottish brogue, so it actually pulled me out of the story to talk through it a few times. But the emotions are strong and the story solid. I look forwarded to reading more from this author.
The Handfasting is a story of two people deeply in love that marry using a quick ceremony that is not in a church to be wed the day before he goes off to fight for Prince Charlie in a very bloody war. Emma waits for Gavin to return for almost a year.
This time period and war was very hard on the Scottish clans with the loss of so many of the fighting men. In this story the third son became the Laird because both of his older brothers and father had been killed in the war. From the history books I have read on this period, this would have been a likely progression to the leadership of he clan.
One of the best things in The Handfasting is the dialogue was true to how the people would have spoken in Scotland. Tas easy to follow and made the story more interesting.
Second Reading: The story of Emma's faithfulness and Gavin's devotion is touching, when he returns with a head wound and has totally forgotten her, the emotional level of the tale increases and makes the plot more enjoyable with the happy ending.

Another book I really wanted to like set in one of my favorite time periods. I find hand fasting pretty interesting and not often written about in this fashion. Readers should know there was a great deal of the story devoted to sex scenes.
The story was flat and endlessly droned on about how handsome and wonderful and perfect the hero was. A couple of times the story moved from one thing to another so quickly I had to go back and see if I skipped some pages. There were quite a few misspellings and missed words and short, choppy sentences.
The one saving grace is the vernacular was very accurate.
Wouldn't recommend it, even though it took about half an hour to read.
This was a very enjoyable novella. Gavin and Emma's love just lit up the pages. You could genuinely feel the love that they had for each other before Gavin left to go to war. It was like I was right there with Emma, feeling her anguish over Gavin losing his memories of all that they had shared and my heart ached for her. Wonderful short and very satisfying read.
