Most people are dull and void of any substance. They trudge through life like scenery for the people who actually live it. But that’s not just how they seem; that’s truly what they are—soulless Meat Suits, made by Guardians, with no idea that they’re less. Since the beginning of time, there have always been only 3,137 everlasting human souls in the universe; never one more and never one less. Until now.
Mason Fiske was a simple Suit, playing a role in the backdrop of an Authentic human. Now he’s more. With his newfound ability to heal, he’s being called the new messiah. Throngs gather for his touch, but Mason doesn’t know that every time he heals a Suit, he gives it a soul by ripping away a little part of the Guardian who created it. He’s killing Guardians. If he can’t be stopped, the Guardians will die and the physical world that they maintain for Authentics will be shattered, forcing mankind to ascend from its earthly existence long before it’s ready. This is exactly what the Others want.
C. Allen Brown’s unique debut novella is a rocket-paced glimpse into obsession and desire. Love may heal, but love corrupted leads to very dark deeds.
This book’s clever cover art and intriguing prologue had me at hello. Though the prologue is only a paragraph long, the point it makes – that, for whatever unknown reason, there have only ever been 3,137 everlasting human souls in the universe since the beginning of time until now – hooks you and has you immediately questioning its meaning and where this story is headed.
In the beginning, there are a few different concepts or subplots being thrown around, leaving you wondering what exactly is going on. To its credit, though, the chapters are short and sharp, pulling you on until a picture starts to form and things start falling nicely into place. It’s likely this style was employed to add intrigue and mystery to the story, which it oh-so-cleverly does.
It’s not long before we discover that the everlasting souls are known as the ‘Guardians of the Authentics’…and they don’t roam the Earth alone. They are accompanied by soulless people or ‘Meat Suits’ they’ve created simply to play backdrop roles in their authentic lives.
For some reason, this had me drawing correlations with some of the new-age titles I’ve read and been fascinated by, which suggest that humanity as a whole is evolving and moving towards enlightenment, with ‘lightworkers’ working towards a shift to a ‘New Planet Earth’. Were the Meat Suits ‘unenlightened’ beings and opposed to the ‘enlightened’ Authentics? Was the author suggesting more than the sum of his words? Had I not been already intrigued, this, for me, was the clincher.
What follows is a page-turning, sci-fi thriller of sorts, with the Authentics livelihood suddenly at risk when a suit inherits the extraordinary powers of healing other suits, unknowingly gifting them souls in an unfortunate exchange with the souls (or pieces of) their Authentic creators.
Fascinating and unique, this is one story not to miss. You’ll find this one hard to put down. More than worth its small cover price.
What happens when the way things have always been change? The way things were created suddenly changes. This is the problem that the Guardians are facing. The number of Authentics, or everlasting human souls, has always been 3,137. But for some unknown reason more Authentics are being created. The Guardians are able to create Suits, individuals with no soul. Suits look like everyone else, but they have a little bit of the Guardian who created in them. The question is what happens if too much of the Guardian is in the Suit? You wind up with what seems to be a new Messiah, who can heal other Suits. But when Suits are healed a little bit of the Guardian who created them dies and the end result is Guardians are dying. I have to admit at first I wasn’t really sure what was going on in this book. And it wasn’t the bad kind of what’s going on, it was the kind of going on that made me want to read more about the characters. As the story unfolded, I decided that the story is really a love story with lots of action. The different characters displayed different versions of love. The book shows every version of love ranging from obsession to selfless love. The thing that I really liked about this book was that it showed how what seems to be a good thing, can turn into something really bad if it is not done for the right motives. I also liked how it pointed out how one simple act can bring about extreme situations. So if you’re looking for a book with a lot of action, interesting characters, and a love story Continuity is the book for you to read.
Continuity is a fast paced look at an alternate reality with some exciting twists. I couldn't put it down. Science fiction/fantasy isn't a genre I normally read so it says a lot that I enjoyed not just the story but also the unusual take on "empty, soulless people".
This was a little distant from what I normally read yet it was a good story. It consist of guardians that create did from their thoughts. The suits believe they had parents, and they have memories of riding bikes, opposite sex, etc. They do not know that they were created. Then you have others that have a soul. very good reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a book /story that on the surface appears to be about an alternate universe or world and how it effects ours. But when the reader gets a little deeper into the story, the idea of God, angels, and demons pop up. The characters are well developed, humorous in some aspects, and the impending disaster is something to think about.
