An insane witch, a missing siren, a murderous love potion … Who knew playing a little hooky could be so dangerous?

Best friends with benefits? It would never work. We’re both too stubborn, and life has taken us down different roads. I have college and dreams of being a gymnastics coach. Jason’s got his wild adventures … and his secrets.

I can’t resist when Jason shows up at my dorm room with promises of adventure and two tickets to a Paranormal Circus: full of misfits and monsters, swamp hags and Manticore, elves and faeries. A world where magic is real, unicorns have vicious tempers, and the creatures tremble in fear of the Ring Master.

When we discover an empty cage and I offer to find the missing siren, I think we’ll be off on another fun adventure, playing hooky from real life as we did as kids. But our search takes us through the paranormal underbelly of Anchorage, only to discover that we walked into a trap and I might lose Jason forever.

Best friends with benefits? It's too late. My heart is ripping in two, and I would sacrifice everything to rewind time, to save him from the evil spell.

Leaving the house to go to school, I had schoolbooks spilling out of one hand, the other holding my place in a Nancy Drew novel, and bunny slippers still on my feet. My mom was a wee bit upset.

I haven't changed much. Still always have a book (or two) in my hand or creating stories in my head, and although I don't have any bunny slippers, I love writing in my jammies and snuggly slipper socks.

With my husband TJ (my own cuddly werewolf), I home-school our three girls, who keep us busy with art, science projects, books to read, dance classes, and walks about the park.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Playing Hooky is the first book in the Paranormal Investigations series. This is a very short story about Emma and Jason. On Emma's 21st birthday Jason decides it's about time he shares his secret world with her. A world filled with magical creatures, elves, dwarves and many more. Together they visit the Circus and get tangled up in a search for one of the missing creatures.

This was a short and amusing story. I really enjoyed the world that Rita Webb created. The circus atmosphere was really magical and I wish we'd seen more of it. Also Emma was a pretty fun character and someone I didn't mind following around.

However, I think that there were a few holes in the plot, things that would be spoilers if I shared them, but didn't really make sense. Also, I wasn't really convinced of how easy Emma accepted everything and just got along with what Jason said. Finally, the whole romance between Jason and Emma was something I didn't really care about.

Still, this was a quick and light read. I can see people really liking it if they can get past the things that really bothered me.

hmmm...this is going to probably be short.

I would like to state because it has been misinterpreted before, 3 stars means i like it, it does NOT mean i did NOT like it? Kay so before ya'll go and attacking me I DID LIKE THIS...its just... well I will get to that later.

Song choice: "Too Afraid to Love You" by The Black Keys

First thoughts: Well this is a novella and on the page count for amazon its only 69 pages so taking that in consideration this was a short, easy, fun read. There were things that i wanted to be expanded on, and things that I thought could have been explored more. I personally disagreed with some the choices of the MCs but hey that is my personal opinion.

Plot: Pretty predictable, sorry! But i figured it out before the plot even really started. I mean yeah i knew something was fishy. Everything - obviously, moved fast, i GET IT, i really do that this is was a novella but this moved TOO fast for my likings, and I can understand where Rita might have been trying to go against the grain with the whole a human learns about the paranormal world and takes it in stride, but i was just sitting here going, seriously? you aren't going to question this, like at all? Yeah she has a moment when she thinks how pissed she is about how Jason lied to her. But it didn't last long. Again i just have to keep going back to the fact how EASILY she accepted these things... i get that in the past her and Jason would go looking for "fairies" and what nots but i mean who didn't? *nervous laughter* wait...? What? Seriously... other people didn't do that... AWKWARD....anyways so this is a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE - if you didn't get that HUGE spoiler but i have to say it

Characters:

Emma: mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm well she definiately looks at the world in her own light - she is very positive but sort of tom-boyish when she is with Jason. I like her down-to-mostly-earth attitude. I do admit that her easy manner did make me like her but i am still really shocked on how easily she accepted things, seriously. okay letting that go. She was very forgiving, and a little too stubborn but i mean... she is a woman right? ..........(i am allowed to say that cause i am a girl myself)

Jason: Ummmm i guess have a case of the Alpha Male Disease, I wanted him to be more Alpha male even though yes i like my guys kind of laid back and having a good time, but for me at the beginning he was his best, he felt REALLY, REALLY real to me.

The ending: Well I think it was a good ending, not really conclusive so there is room for another novella (which i want) but enough closure that you might not go insane waiting for the next one.

So yes i will be reading the next one.

I hope she likes it. The place we're going. Today, I'm bringing her deeper into my life than I ever have before. I'm laying all my cards on the table, revealing all my deepest secrets.

Except that I love her.

Wow, this book was so different to others that I have read lately or probably anything that I've ever read. Imagine a fairytale filled with adventure and the throw in a nice yummy dose of New Adult steaminess and what you have is Playing Hooky.

It's Valentines day and Emma's 21st birthday. Her friend since Kindergarten Jason, turns up at her door to spend the day with her. He's about to introduce her to a part of himself that he's kept hidden all these years. He takes her to the circus and introduces her to a hidden world filled with unicorns, sirens and magic. And even though he lets Emma into his world we still have much to learn about exactly what Jason is.

Now I stand in a circus tent with my insane best friend and seven white unicorns.

Playing Hooky is a super quick read at just 100 pages long, although I was so caught up in the story it seemed much less than that. It took me no time at all to finish it. But even though it is a breeze to read, Rita Webb still manages to pack a whole lot into it's pages. Sometimes with novella sized books you can come away without feeling that you know the characters very well, but I didn't feel that at all here. Oh, there is definitely still lots to learn about them and I have many questions but I definitely felt connected to them.

That's my girl, plunging into the craziest adventures by my side. She hasn't changed much over the years. Tell her to stay safe and she'll go in the opposite direction.
That's what I love about her.

Emma and Jason, both have feelings for each other. Emma doesn't want to ruin their friendship so keeps those feelings to herself. Jason is much more forthcoming with his actions but still holds back in letting his true feelings be known. But they have a wonderful connection. Their friendship and the banter between the two was fantastic. The familiarity that they have from being friends for so long was one of the things that I loved most about the book.

"Last time I tried to kiss you, you ran away screaming about my 'girl cooties' "

There was also a surprising twist coming in their search for the siren. One that really threw me because I sure didn't see that one coming.

This was the first book that I had read by Rita Webb and it was such a wonderful read. I was really surprised at the amount of humour and I found myself having a laugh on more than one occasion. And while I was completely swept up in the paranormal aspect of the story it was Emma and Jason that sold it for me. Looking forward to reading the next book and having some of my questions answered especially in regards to getting to know Jason on a greater level.

4.5/5 Stars!!

What you think is inside this book, is not...

How could I turn this down? She is going to school at UAA (University of Alaska, Anchorage). At least I assume so since that is the only college in Anchorage. I had to totally giggle as I read this and dove straight into the read. I asked to be part of the tour after helping with the graphics and falling in love with everything I kept hearing about it, and first off? This is a book you will not want to judge by it's cover.

Wait you say? The cover is beautiful you say? Well of course! I agree! But what is in it? Is a total surprise! Much to my surprise our leading lady, Emma and her best friend whom she gave up on being her leading man in her life, Jason get more than they bargain for on her birthday... her 21st birthday.. and Valentine's day... can you say one huge Cluster - *fudge-nutter-bar-but-not-the-tasty-kind*? Yep and what comes next is just like this cover, not what you expect to happen.

So what do I think about this book... err short story? Well I liked it, it was fun, it was fast and it was way to bloody short! Hello Rita!! BRING ME MORE! Come on, don't make me wait till winter *pout* I am stomping my feet! I love the glittering fun you taunted me with. I adore the interludes between Jason and Emma. The story flows well and even with my jacked up eyes and slower reading I was done in an hour.

So... can you say... don't judge book by it's cover here on Cabin Goddess??? Naaaa usually you can because I am a cover whore, but this time? Don't assume a story from the cover! You may just be beyond surprised

I rated this a 4/5 stars on Amazon because there it means I liked it. HERE 3/5 stars means I liked it. I did not really like it, I just liked it. On my blog it is rated a 3.5 stars which is where I feel it belongs for me!

This was a quick, light, fun read and I'm looking forward to more in the series.

Emma and Jason have been best friends for years, since they were little children. They enjoy the same adventures and share a stubborn nature. They are also attracted to each other but neither has worked up the courage to admit it. Emma is afraid that if things go wrong, she'll lose not only her boyfriend but her best friend while Jason has hesitated in part due to a big secret. Now, he shares part of that secret with Emma and she handles it well. A little too well actually, it should have been more of a life-changing event. But, even as little children their adventures included hunting for imaginary things so Emma is primed to believe.

I figured out early on who the villain was and I'm also pretty sure I know who/what Jason really is. If I'm right, that could make for some very exciting stories. I really enjoyed the world building, the characters, and the humor. It's a short story, or maybe a novella? I'm not always clear on the distinction, but either way it's short and a fast read. On the one hand, I appreciate that Webb didn't pad the story as some authors are prone to doing; on the other hand, a little more fleshing out would have been good. Still, it was a good story, well written, interesting and fun. Go pick up a copy.

Some quotes:

As always, Angelina's the image of vomit-inducing school-girl perfection.

My sister Angelina is too perfect. Straight-A honor student. Mother's sweetie pie. Father's angel.

Mama Maria turns her back on us while stirring her pot and mumbling obscenities to herself that would make a sailor blush. "Incantations," Jason mouths to me. I'd never thought those words would be for chanting spells.

Sometimes being normal is vastly over rated!

This book sends you on a whirlwind adventure into all things supernatural. The book was fast paced and full of twists and turns keeping you on your toes at every turn of the page. The imaginative writing really made me feel as if I was part of this magical new world. It is a unique new story that will have you eagerly turning the pages to find out what happens next.

Not only is this book filled with interesting creatures and tons of adventure it also has plenty of humor as well. These characters never ceased to make me laugh whether it was the banter between Jason and Emma or the crazy antics of their friends.

I loved the relationship between Emma and Jason. They are best friends and you can tell. It was nice to see characters that didn’t just have insta love. There was history between them and even when they were fighting you could tell how much they cared for one another.

Emma was stubborn and yet sweet. She has a rough time figuring out all of the crazy happenings in her life at the moment and it isn’t helped by her friend Jason. In fact he seems to make things worse, but even so she loves him. She is a fun character to get to know and I hope to find out more in later books.

Jason was definitely the life of the party no matter where he was. He is fun loving and carefree, but he does have his serious moments. It is easy to see he cares deeply for Emma even when he is annoying her. I loved that he could always put a smile on both the reader and Emma’s face.

This is a fun and adventurous new story that fans of fantasy will not want to miss! I cannot wait to see what else happens to these awesome characters.

*** This Review was Originally posted on my blog DanaSquare REVIEW I received this book for review purposes all opinions are my own ***

Playing Hooky is an exciting and fun paranormal adventure between two best friends that have a lot of chemistry! I haven't read a book that combines so many paranormal aspects into one book in a long time and add to that this is a novella! I have no clue how Rita Webb fit all of this action into a novella length story.

I loved Emma and Jason the main characters that both narrate the story. Emma is funny and carefree but also rebellious. The only problem I had with her was the fact that she just believed Jason right away. I feel like it was so unbelievable and yet she just went with it as if seeing a Unicorn and an Elf was nothing. I especially loved Jason. Usually in the unrequited love between best friends the guy tends to not show that he likes her. But he openly ogles her but she just doesn't get the hint.

I knew Angelina was too good to be true and it was slightly predictable that she would be the one to get them into this mess. There were plenty of clues. It wasn't something that bothered me though. She is definitely a character I enjoyed hating but I did feel bad for her.

I loved all of the paranormal characters it worked to well and added a lot of depth to the story. I was a huge fan of the literary references to Laini Taylor the author of Daughter of Smoke and Bones as well as Harry Potter! This book was fun and hilarious. Definitely a great read that you will only need one sitting for!

I think my first problem with this one was that Playing Hooky was too short. I already know I don’t like short stories, but I decided that a novella was worth a shot. From the synopsis it sounded like something I would really be pulled into, but unfortunately, Playing Hooky turned out to quite annoying and I barely got through it.

For starters, I had a problem connecting with Emma and Jason. I was also annoyed with their conversations, because half the time they spent talking about past events as a filler on their relationship and that bugged me so much.

I also had a time really getting into the paranormal aspect into the story. Since there were under 100 pages to this novella, the story was rushed right to the dwarves and unicorns, sirens and elves, and Emma just sort of accepted everything as it came without much surprise.

The ending was rushed and the villain was a little surprising, but overall predictable. I was really disappointed in how rushed Playing Hooky was, since there were so many elements to be included, and delivered rather poorly.

In conclusion, I didn’t find Playing Hooky to be good. Although I am fond of paranormal and friendships turned into love interests, I didn’t enjoy it all. I have seen many positive reviews though, so if it sounds like something others might enjoy, I say give it a shot. Overall, this one was not for me at all.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the whole concept of a circus filled with mythological creatures of all shapes and sizes. The descriptions were so vivid that I felt I could just reach out and touch them. The authors brought them to life for me. Amazing!

The "human" characters were brilliant as well. I love the playful banter between the two lead characters, Emma and Jason. I found myself giggling out loud on more than one occasion.

The two worlds were intertwined seamlessly and made this a wonderful adventure for me. When I reached the end I thought, why? I need more! I am so excited that this is a series and I can immerse myself once again in this truly magical world.

Otherworldly creatures, romantic chemistry and mystery make Playing Hooky an astonishing read.

On Emma's 21st birthday she just wanted to hit the snooze button but when her best friend shows up she knows she is in for an adventure. Jason is about to reveal something about himself and the doors it opens to Emma and it will leave her completely enchanted.

For the first time since they were old enough to date both are single, but what would happen if they began to date? The question is out there but both Jason and Emma are entwined in another adventure that reveals a betrayal neither saw coming.

Very fun read. There was a magical quality to the story that sweeps you away immediately.

Very good, yet short read. Would of loved if the author had explore in more detail but a good job nonetheless.. ;) Emma just an ordinary young lady is taken out and about for her 21st birthday by her closest friend Jason. Jason has decided to begin to come clean on who he really is.. and unlike most girls Emma didn't seem as shocked as I would of thought. Emma is introduced to a bunch of mythical beings and seems enticed by it all. An adventure is started as the two of them must find a missing siren. Love is in the air.. but can a friendship be risked..? ;)

Cute and quick little read. With short stories, it can be hard to get sucked in b/c you have to just go with their assumptions...the author tends to just jump right in. Like how easily Emma believed everything about the new world. It worked for me and I let it go, but my major complaint was with her sister....I don't know if the author will delve into it more in later stories, but I would spend a little more time being shocked about that whole turn of events if I were Emma....

Playing Hooky by Rita Webb
Book One of the Paranormal Investigations series
Publication Date: January 21, 2013
Rating: 4 stars
Source: eARC sent by the author

Official Summary:

Valentine’s Day.

And my 21st birthday.

Whoop-de-doo.

Just another college day full of classes and more homework than is humanly possible.

…until Jason, my best-friend-since-kindergarten, shows up to take me out for the day.

Like old times: the two of us on a wacky adventure, playing hooky from real life. With his lopsided grin and tickets to a circus full of misfits and monsters, he introduces me to a whole new world—one full of magic and mystery—and turns my reality upside down.

Except nothing goes as planned, and we end up running through the city to find a missing siren before someone brews a love potion with her blood.

Sirens and love potions, witches and elves, and Valentine kisses. Nothing will be the same for me again.

What I Liked:

This book was extremely short, which is one of the reasons why I took a chance and jumped on board the tour. Short books don't take much of my time to read, review, and post. It helps when the writing style is good enough that I zip through the book!

That being said, I enjoyed this book! It's a bit different from what I have been reading. It's a New Adult novel - but really, just in terms of the age level. Emma is in college, as is Jason, the male protagonist and love interest. There is no crazy wild sex in this book. Chemistry doesn't ooze off the pages, and it's not all about the romance. I like that distinction - because your typical New Adult book is usually a contemporary romance book filled adult sex and chemistry.

Emma is a college student whose birthday is on Valentine's Day. The opening scene is Emma waking up to her birthday. Her younger sister Angelina arrives with Emma's best friend Jason. Jason is a typical player... except he's not. He doesn't sleep around, he just dates around, if that makes sense. Anyway, Angelina has a crush on Jason, which is awkward because Emma has a crush on him... a little more than a crush, actually.

Except Jason is in love with Emma, as much as she is in love with him. He doesn't tell her anything, because he is hiding something dangerous. He's not human. So, on her birthday, he decides to take her to a magical circus with unicorns and dwarves and sirens, in order to tell Emma the truth.

So they go to the circus. Emma finds out. But then the circus people realize that the siren is missing, and Emma and Jason are off to find the siren. They encounter things they never thought they would... and possibly grow a little closer.

This book was really, really short, so the climax comes pretty quickly. I didn't see the climax coming... until it did! I thought Emma took the whole magic thing really well. We don't get to know what Jason is, but I have a very good idea ;)

The romance is brief in this book, and not much happens between Emma and Jason. What happened was cute... but I wanted more. Not as much as most New Adult books, but more than what was given. That's when a book is TOO short.

The ending of the book is good! Everything wraps up well, except the romance, and Jason's magical identity, which leaves a great segue for another book or books!

What I Did Not Like:

This book was too short. I kept saying it was short... well, it was TOO short. Very little character development, very little romance development. The plot development and world building were both pretty good, but more needed to happen in terms of the romance, and in terms of character development.

Otherwise, not bad!

Would I Recommend It:

If you're in the mood for a quick read about magic and a little romance, then this is a good one for you! It's labeled New Adult, but it's not your typical New Adult novel at all!

Rating:

3.5 stars -> rounded up to four stars. This was a really fast, intriguing read, and I can't wait for more!

Instant love.

As promised by the author, it's just a 100 page novella, but I never expected that the novella (she got me hooked just by mentioning paranormal romance) would be filled with a hilarious adventure and a witty heroine!

I remembered reading the book in a restaurant and the lady next to me gave me the *weird eye* because I was laughing by myself. It amazes me how one simple comment from Emma ( the female protagonist) can make me giggle like a three year old.

Despite the character's humor, I find the story plot to be really fast paced yet amusingly alluring. I was quickly pulled into the world of sirens and elfs and I couldn't resist Jason's charm ( Jason is the incredibly hot male protagonist).

True to its core, Playing Hooky is a great combination of paranormal and romance! I loved that the book was written from both of the main character's POV, giving me a chance to look at things in different perspectives! Sometimes these kind of writing could be rather disorientating, but it worked just perfectly for this book. I do enjoy seeing things from Emma's witty sense of humor, and I adore Jason's pining over Emma. A blooming romance I would say!

As for the paranormal aspect, from the blurb itself we can guess that the book is a mixture of all sorts of mythical creatures (like a circus) and that is what intrigued me the most. I liked that the author portrayed the siren to be a sad creature, siren has always been one of my favorite creatures in the paranormal world.

As if that is not enough! In this short novella the author even included a twist, leaving the readers wondering about the truth behind one of the main characters. Definitely have me vouching for the sequel!

A great read with a great flash fight in the end. Hoping for a sequel!

just a picture I wanted to share!

I would like to take this chance to thank the author, Rita Webb for kindly giving me a copy of her ebook, I never expected it to be this amazing for a short read! A big love and thank you!

"NO, NO, NO. You can't fall in love with me," Emma whispers in my ear.
"Too late."

Like many other readers, I saw the cover (niceee!), read the description, and snatch the book.

In short, the book is SWEET!

It is the story of a friendship that turns into something else and more profound. But if Jason (by the way, you’ll love him) takes chances and muster his courage to step beyond their sincere friendship, Emma is afraid that she could lose everything: Jason, his love and his friendship. For now she prefers to have less rather than risk losing everything. But hers hesitation is in the reader’s favor who will assist to this "prelude" and the attempt between them. Exploratory which is seasoned with a more delicate touch or heated glance, a blush or a kiss.

And this interlude takes place in a fantasy world from which we catch only glimpses. There are many secrets to discover, also regarding Jason, and many appealing characters. Universal myths and folklore are interwoven and create this world that secretly coexists with us. Chimeras and mermaids, magician elves (at least that is striving to be), unicorns and not only them offer reasons and moments of humor and action. Because not everything is peachy. Selfishness and despicable characters or just heated hearts jeopardize the lovers (but don’t tell Emma she loves because she will not recognize). Thus begins a life and death struggle whose end is not yet written.

The book is an easy reading and the writing is fluent. "Romantic" moments are nicely peppered with the action ones. Everything is logical (in a fantasy world) and you have no moments of rest.

Unfortunately the book is a short story, just published in January 2013 and thus it seems that will be a fairly long wait until the next volume. I say unfortunately because I’m restless to see what will happens and if / how / what will be my favorite Hunter.

"Best friend don't keep secrets."
"Never again. I promise." I cross my heart. "Except one. I am allowed to keep one secret."
"What's that?"
"I can tell you, or it won't be a secret anymore." That I love you.

REVIEW:
Playing Hooky follows Emma on her 21st birthday, as always she’s excited to spend this day with her best friend Jason on some sort of adventure. But Jason has a special day planned for her that she’ll likely never forget.

Emma is a typical college girl; she’s not perfect and seems to be the total opposite of her pretty and perfectly sweet sister. But her friend Jason, likes her for who she is. Which is rough around the edges and ready for adventures. Jason introduces her to what he’s grown up knowing is real, magic. Emma actually takes the news of his secret with stride and not as many questions as I would have. But I guess it might have to settle in a bit more.

Jason has been best friends with Emma since they were kids, always harboring a soft spot for her. On her birthday he wants to tell her one of his big secrets and introduces her to a world he’s tried to tell her about for forever. But things take a turn when a mystical creature goes missing and they set off looking for it. I loved how much he cared for Emma, they had some cute moments of chemistry and you can just see the sparks.

The hard part about this story is that since it’s a novella, the readers only get a sneak peak into this magical world. We do learn a little backstory about Jason and of course some great chemistry with Emma and him. Luckily this is only the beginning, as with this being a series, I can’t wait to find about more about Jason and this world he’s brought Emma too. I don’t want to say much more since it will spoil the story.

Overall this was a great introduction, I can’t wait to see more chemistry bloom with Emma and Jason, plus get more of a background story. There were a lot of unique characters introduced that I can already tell they’ll be coming back in the future books. We do get a very shocking villain and I so can’t wait to get more detail about that one. In the end a fast read with mystery, romance, magic, and a promising start to a new series.

I have to admit that I haven’t read much–if any–Paranormal Themed New Adult books, so when the opportunity came around I decided to take a chance since I’m a big fan of paranormal books. I have to say that I rather enjoyed this quite a bit! The summary was the deciding factor in whether I read it or not but the characters and the writing style and the storyline–which was rather cool–made me really love Playing Hooky.

As novella’s go, it was fast-paced and action-packed and it went by so fast that when it ended I was like, gimme more now! I need more of this series! I want more of the cute and fun characters, Emma and Jason, and their obviously smoldering chemistry, which they insist on denying. Sigh.

The two of them have some serious history, they’ve been friends since they were kids and now as young adults they are the very best of friends and I really appreciated their kind of relationship. As I mentioned before, they have this obvious chemistry and I can’t wait to see them get together and become more to each other. That growth of their relationship will be an amazing thing to read about. The banter between the two of them was lighthearted and funny and I just couldn’t get enough!

As for the storyline, Emma and Jason are introduced to this whole new world of interesting creatures that they had no idea actually existed, like, Witches and Unicorns and the like. I liked the whole mix of paranormal creatures that were included in this novella. This fun story is very much engaging and enjoyable from start to finish and I can’t wait to read the next installment!

I have to admit that I haven't read much--if any--Paranormal Themed New Adult books, so when the opportunity came around I decided to take a chance since I'm a big fan of paranormal books. I have to say that I rather enjoyed this quite a bit! The summary was the deciding factor in whether I read it or not but the characters and the writing style and the storyline--which was rather cool--made me really love Playing Hooky.

As novella's go, it was fast-paced and action-packed and it went by so fast that when it ended I was like, gimme more now! I need more of this series! I want more of the cute and fun characters, Emma and Jason, and their obviously smoldering chemistry, which they insist on denying. Sigh.

The two of them have some serious history, they've been friends since they were kids and now as young adults they are the very best of friends and I really appreciated their kind of relationship. As I mentioned before, they have this obvious chemistry and I can't wait to see them get together and become more to each other. That growth of their relationship will be an amazing thing to read about. The banter between the two of them was lighthearted and funny and I just couldn't get enough!

As for the storyline, Emma and Jason are introduced to this whole new world of interesting creatures that they had no idea actually existed, like, Witches and Unicorns and the like. I liked the whole mix of paranormal creatures that were included in this novella. In this short novella you get hit fast with the paranormal world. I wished Rita, the author, took more time before building up to it as I enjoyed reading about the characters and getting to know them. I really enjoyed seeing them both crush on each other. It was cute.

But then again I'm glad we were brought to the paranormal world so early, as I also enjoyed that quite much. Hey, I'm a girl so I'm allowed to be confusing and not able to make up my mind haha. Anyways, when they get to the circus tent and our eyes are opened and showed to this world, it’s quite magical. Along with the unicorns prancing around we get to meet a whole bunch of a cast of unique characters.

You get to meet a grouchy gnome, a somewhat know it all elf, and then a mystery starts a brewing. A siren goes missing and it’s up to Emma and Jason to solve the case. With this Emma gets to see another side of the magical world she just fell into and it surprises her to the T. It’s Valentine's Day and someone is looking for love.

This was a fun quick read that any paranormal lover will enjoy. The action, pacing and the enemy is all amazing and I was a bit surprised to where this was going. It’s one where the hints aren’t so obvious yet at the same time, it’s like duh I can sense something is up with this person and can be quite obvious haha.

There's also a mystery around Jason and I would love to know more about that. They give you hints and reveal a little but not enough to feed the cravings of your mind. Overall, this was a short blast of a ride, with humor and loads of action that'll have you turning the pages. Can’t wait for the next one in this new series!

(As reviewed on my blog)

The cover of Playing Hooky drew me in. Have you seen it? There's a FREAKING UNICORN! And a couple surrounded by flames. Which sounds odd, but isn't. Not here, anyway. I was sold.

I'll sheepishly admit that I haven't read many New Adult paranormal novels - but I love paranormal novels, so I figured this wasn't a huge drawback.

Playing Hooky is a fast - and delightful read. It is easy to fall in love and relate to the characters. Emma has the misfortune of being born on Valentine's Day. As a college student, she doesn't even get the day off...until Jason, her childhood best friend, shows up, catchs her in her pyjamas and whisks her away for a day of adventure. Emma and Jason have best friends since childhood...but now what are they are? Emma doesn't know. Does Jason? There is great chemistry between these two, enough that the reader is pining for them to just give in to their secret feelings.

As this is an action packed novella, the pace is fast. You'll be on the edge of your seat, swept away into this fantastical world, waiting to know what comes next!

While I did solve the mystery fairly easily, it didn't diminish my feelings about the book.I definitely want to read more in this series - although I'll hope for a full length book next just to satisfy my appetite. I would love for further books to pad the mystery a little more. There was great foreshadowing, but I would have liked to have seen more options as to not give the "whodunit" away. All in all, Playing Hooky ended way too soon - I wanted more!

When I started this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. But what I found was a fun filled jaunt through the paranormal. The story itself is a very quick read. The book starts out simple enough, girl (Emma) secretly in love with the boy (Jason), meanwhile boy is secretly in love with the girl.

It's Emma's Birthday, and Jason is going to take her out on her yearly birthday adventure. From here this book turns from your oh so typical romance into an adventure of hilariousness. Unicorns, Sirens, Manticores and a very magical circus all lead us into a world of the paranormal.

Now this book was fun with a capital F. But sadly I can't give it 5 stars. And I will tell you why that is, first of all the books entry into paranormal doesn't surprise Emma at all, for me that is totally unrealistic of a response to seeing real live Unicorns. I personally wouldn't accept that so quickly. But we will suspend belief for the moment that she really did respond like this. Within a chapter I knew who the culprit was who stole the Siren. AND just as I was totally absorbed in the story suspending belief and accepting that I knew who the thief was, BAM the book ended.

I never found out what Jason was, I never found out if they wind up together or not. Now mind you this is a fabulous book for what it is. I am assuming that this book is the first in a series, and I'm hoping that the next book gives me some closure. All in all, I give it 4.5 stars and I do recommend this book for a quick read and for the entertainment value.

Details/Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for my honest review. This free book held no determination on my final review.

This is just what was needed for a refreshing and enjoyable snack of reading pleasure. First time reading this author and was not disappointed to say the least. I have been following this author because she does write paranormal and I do so enjoy the genre. Hooky- just the word alone brings back memories of fun times that it is associated with the word. In this I met Emma who is in college and getting ready for the day when in pops her sister with her best friend Jason to celebrate her 21st birthday which they have done many times before. Such a delightful character is Emma and so very different from her sister. So off they go with a nice surprise in store for her provide by Jason. They end up at a circus one like no other she had been to before. It is also a secret her friend Jason has been keeping but now has shared. The people or I should say others are most delightful to be introduced to and learn about their unique personalities. Jason is also someone she has known forever but has she really? He is revealing lots of things she has not known about himself but save one. The also must solve a mystery and do a rescue and the surprise of Emma and Jason's is awaiting them at the end of all of this. The flow of this little snack is so nice I gobbled it up in no time and wanted more. Humor is the spice with just a touch of romance which also helps to want more from these characters. Thank goodness she does have more in novels to be devoured because now that I have tasted her style it is quite pleasing to be sure and leaves you satisfied to the core.

It is Emma's 21st birthday and her sister arrives singing Happy Birthday, with Emma's best friend Jason in tow. Jason has planned a very special day for Emma, and she plays hooky from college to spend the day with him.

Emma likes Jason, Jason likes Emma, but neither seem willing to admit it to each other for fear of losing the friendship they have built up.

Jason has been keeping a huge secret from Emma, and he has chosen this day to share it with her. But he doesn't tell her as such, instead he takes her somewhere, and lets her see for herself.

Jason takes Emma to a circus, but not just any circus. This is a very special circus, with mythical creatures such as unicorns, dwarves, and a siren.
Unfortunately the siren has escaped, and it is up to Jason to find her, with Emma helping.

I managed to figure out the culprit while they were talking to Mama Maria, but I didn't work out why until I read it!

This is a short story so it didn't take too long to read, but there is a lot packed into its pages. The author has managed to write a story which captures the imagination of the reader very quickly with what appears to be a story of friends finding love, then quickly turns it into something far more. A well written story with just one fault, it ends too quickly! I look forward to the next story to find out if Jason and Emma manage to get it together, and what other secrets he has been hiding.

I loved this short and sweet little story! It's so fun, as you meet Emma, a college student, who finally finds out the secrets behind her best friend, whom she's in love with, races to save a siren, whom she never believed existed, and almost becomes her sister's enemy. Oh boy! Oh and it's her birthday on Valentine's day :)

Emma is hilarious. But she's also just a human who will make you love her on the spot. You can't help it. She's also in love with her best friend, but she won't lose him, so she'll never tell him. She also loves her sister more than anything. Jason is sweet, and pretty awesome, and he's got 2 secrets. One involving Emma, and one about himself that even he doesn't understand. And yet, Emma will help him begin to discover :) Angelina is trouble. Well in this book she causes all the trouble. But I must encourage you, READ the book Breaking Angelina. The little perfect sister isn't everything you read in this one, and boy oh boy, did the authors fool me here. I was all ready for the hating.

The writing is fast paced, the plot is well done, and there's lots of mysteries and twists to be had. And I think you'll want the next book ASAP because I am learning all the characters we get peaks of will have significance in the future. Trust me. :) I want more and I can't wait for the next books to come. Don't forget, grab up Angelina's story, you'll want to know what actually happened ;) 5 PAWS!!

I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review.

Playing Hooky by Rita Webb will take you on a magical journey full of adventure and mystery. This book is book 1 in the Paranormal Investigations series and it will leave you wanting more. Rita Webb developed a well-written story that will leave readers intrigued by her characters. This story revolves around Emma and Jason. Now Jason and Emma have been best friends forever, but they definitely have more than friendly feelings between the two of them. Emma turns 21, so Jason decides to take her on experience she won't forget. He takes her to the circus. Now this is just any old circus, this circus is full of promise and adventure. Adventure that leads Emma uncovering some major secrets and turning her world upside down.

I really enjoyed Jason and Emma as characters and you could tell they belonged together. I think this author did a great job at creating this new world. The story line is one that will keep entertained and let your imagination run wild. This story is definitely not predictable and I am still reeling from what happened with the characters. Thankfully book 2 is already out and I can continue this journey. My only criticism with this book is the amount of time it took Emma to adapt to Jason and his world. It was too quick for me, but other than that, Playing Hooky was a fun read. Reviewed by Jennifer for MNP

Absolutely enchanting! I got so caught up in this novella I almost forgot about fixing dinner, in fact, it didn’t get started until 7 pm last night. I did not want to stop reading this book. There is so much action packed into this story it could easily have been a full length novel without any problem.

It’s Emma’s 21st birthday and her lifelong friend since kindergarten, Jason, shows up to show her a good time. He takes her to a circus and introduces her to all his strange friends, friends she never knew he had. They are soon swept into a fantasy world Emma had no idea existed and then they become involved in a quest to locate a Siren who has gone missing. The Siren has been taken because of her capability to brew up a love potion.

I must admit, I was drawn to the book because of the cover and the name, Playing Hooky, which to me suggested a promise of fun. There was no disappointment there.

The two main characters, Emma and Jason, were so likable and I loved the idea that they each had secret feelings for one another—feelings that Emma felt would only ruin their friendship.
I’m giving this novella 5 shining stars because I became so swept up in the action. I do wish it had been longer though, because when I got to the ending I wanted more and I sincerely hope that Ms. Webb continues on with the possible love story of Emma and Jason in a sequel.

Background: Emma and Jason have been friends, best friends, since they were kids. Now they are in college, single at the same time, and it is Emma's birthday. It just so happens that Jason has showed up to give her a very special and magical day.

Review: This was a very cute novella, only about 100 pages long so it was a quick and easy read. Emma and Jason are adorable together, all embarrassing moments and tension. The story was cute too, it is Valentine's Day and they must figure out who is trying to make a love potion; only before today, Emma didn't even know magical creatures and love spells existed.

I enjoyed the back and forth and tension of Emma and Jason, and found the magical elements intriguing and fantastical. The chapters are set up in a back and forth between Emma's and Jason's point of views which I loved, no need to question their motives, because as a reader you knew them all, and at times it made to story even more quirky.

I did have some issue though, Emma is very quick to believe in some pretty outrageous things, without freaking out. I was bothered by it, but at the same time thought it was part show of the character to be closer with Jason... not sure.. this is only #1 in a series, so there may be more to tell, and I do believe there is. Cannot wait to see more from this writer.

MINI REVIEW: Playing Hooky is a short, sweet & entertaining Paranormal read. The story is fresh and different, mostly because it is not just about vampires. The plot is entertaining, Emma and her best friend Jason were put in charge of finding a Siren who was presumably lost or kidnapped for her blood. The adventure starts when Emma & Jason embark into an hunt to find and save the Siren, while trying to discover who is behind the disappearance. While Jason is trying to protect his friend, he discover that his feelings for her are stronger than a love potion, and in terms Emma feelings surface. I liked both Emma and Jason, their friendship and attraction for each other made them likeable. I recommend this novella if you are looking for something different, an adventure filled with mystical creatures & young love. I think Rita Webb did a good job creating a story that feels different yet it has all the paranormal/urban fantasy elements to keep the reader entertained. The mystery behind what Jason really is is a good start for what is to happen on the next book, I am looking forward to find out what happens with Emma’s sister and how she ended up knowing about all the mystical creatures before her sister did.

Received from: purchased on Amazon.com

Excerpt (included with permission from the author):

I grin down at her. When we were kids, she explained the birds and the bees to me, but I insisted I washed up on the ocean beach. Emma never believed me.

When I got older, I learned we were both right.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jason always plans an unique outing for Emma’s birthday, but this year, her 21st birthday, is going to top them all. This year, he is finally going to let her in on the secret of who he is - sort of. In the middle of a national park, they enter a circus of rare creatures, including a naga, a chimera, elves, and unicorns. Before the show can begin, their trip to the circus because a fast-paced run in search of a siren and the human who has kidnapped her.
This is a short-story; therefore a quick read but so worth the hour. While considered to be a NA book because of the ages of the main characters, this is not a sex-fest and is entirely appropriate for teens to read.
This is the first book I have read from Ms. Webb and I absolutely loved it. I will be picking up some more of her offerings, while stalking… no… umm.. pestering… ummm no…… oh I have it, I will be encouraging her to release the next in this series!
