William Darmon and his wife Elizabeth, owners of Mayfair Hall, fall victim to rival Forth family who introduce a bill into Parliament called the Writ of Confiscation. It will repossess the Darmon's ancestral home unless they can find their missing deed. A late family friend hid the document on a trip to Egypt decades earlier, leaving a clue to its location only visible in the night sky of 1825. As the Darmons begin to unravel the mystery, a Forth body turns up on their doorstep.
William and brother-in-law, Charles set off for the Mediterranean only to be waylaid by Greek independence fighters on the eve of a massive Egyptian invasion. William's escape finds him stranded in the Sahara far behind Forth members attempting to destroy his property title.
Thomas Thorpe was the Project Manager of NASAs highly successful Mars Global Surveyor Mission a spacecraft that orbited Mars for nine years, returning two hundred thousand images of the planet and relaying pictures from the Mars Rovers. Mr. Thorpe has published six historical mystery thrillers of the Darmon Mystery series about a couple from Kent that solves international crimes during the 1830s. These novels include: Message of the Pendant, The Forth Contention, The Patriote Peril, Fair Wind to Bahia, Desperate Crossing and Without Redemption. "
What a refreshing mystery novel! The beautifully described historical setting and the thrilling pace of the storyline make for a compelling read and sets this book apart from today's popular mystery novels.
The main characters from the Darmon family are faced with losing their family estate through the enacting of a new law. In their efforts to restore their rightful ownership, they discover a feud between their family and the Forth family going back generations. Through their adventures they learn that the conspiracy to take over the family estate is even bigger than they could have imagined, leading them on an international adventure.
I was completely hooked about three chapters in and read a good seventy percent of the book in one evening. Once I got started, it was very hard to put the book down! The writing is excellent. The story is rich in history. Every explanation is so detailed and interesting, I felt like I was learning a lot about the time period while engrossed in this thrilling story. History buffs will of course enjoy it, but I believe even those who don't normally enjoy historical novels will like the fast pace and excitement this story has to offer.
I was very graciously given a copy of this book for my honest review. Thank you so much!
William and Elizabeth Darmon of Kent, the proprietors of Mayfair Hall, a historic landmark, are caught in an incredible complication. A new bill has been introduced into parliament entitled the "Writ of Confiscation".
Mayfair, a place that has been handed down through the generations of William's ancestors, is one of the first properties listed for confiscation unless the Darmons can produce the original deed.
William and Elizabeth, along with their relatives Charles and Emily Bagwell, are met with a journey that takes the two men around the world. Elizabeth and Emily must continue an embittered battle at home against the imposing Forth family; who wish to lay claim to Mayfair.
Thorpe's astute and knowledgeable tone of the time period, along with his attention to detail lends a winning salvo to a complicated mystery.
This was an excellent sequel to book 1 in the Darmon Mysteries. I love the way you are transported into the book as one of the characters. I recommend this book book and it's author.
Thomas Thorpe really is a great storyteller. He has the ability to capture your attention and pull you so deeply into the story, that you easily lose track of everything going on around you. Every book I’ve read has been an adventure, and I think it would take allot of skill to write a story that is based in the 1800’s. This story is straight into it with William and Elisabeth finding a dead body in their house. Even though it’s someone they thought they knew, they will still have to prove they didn’t do it. When they have to travel to Egypt to track down the title deeds to their house, they need to do it by boat. So no quick trip to the airport in the 1800’s. I also like that this book touches on actual historic events, like Greece seeking independence. I’ve personally been to Egypt and Greece, and I enjoyed the Authors descriptions of Cario and Athens. It certainly shows the depth and background that he has gone into for this book. If you haven’t read a Thomas Thorpe book, then I would definitely recommend you add him to your reading list.
THE FORTH CONSPIRACY by Thomas Thorpe is an interesting Historical fiction/Mystery. #2 in the "Darmon Mysteries",but can be read as a stand alone. Filled with non-stop action, suspense, and mystery. William Darmon, his wife, Elizabeth are owners of the Mayfair hall find themselves in a battle to save William's ancestral home, what William encounters is danger, family secrets and finding the missing deed to William's ancestral home. A must read for any historical readers, and for those who enjoy mystery. This was my first read by this atuhor, but I look forward to more of this author's work. The plot was intriguing as well as mysterious and the characters were engaging. Received for an honest review from the publisher and/or author.

I met this author by chance at our local bookstore during a signing and he was super nice. I really enjoyed talking to him. I love that he was a project manager on the Mars Surveyor mission and he researched and wrote during his down time after launch and before landing. Being a fan of historical fiction I bought a copy of one of his older books for my mom on his recommendation after telling him what my mom liked. I knew I would eventually get to read it too. It was a good story, seems quite historically accurate but there were too many characters and I found myself getting confused between the players and events. Lots of travel between England, France and Egypt which made it interesting, but lots of chance meetings. The story didn't flow as organically as I'd hoped. I'd still like to read more as the author was such a great guy.
