Godsmere Abbey: once a citadel of hope and learning, now a fallen stronghold reduced to decay and a place of imprisonment for petty criminals on a planet in decline. Friar Julian knows he might at least hear beautiful music once again if the abbey’s organ can be made to sing once more. Enter alleged thief Niku, who claims he can repair the organ—for the price of his freedom. A tale of the Liaden Universe® from Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
Sharon Lee has been married to her first husband for more than half her lifetime; she is a friend to cats, a member of the National Carousel Association, and oversees the dubious investment schemes of an improbable number of stuffed animals.
Despite having been born in a year of the dragon, Sharon is an introvert. She lives in Maine because she likes it there. In fact, she likes it so much that she has written five novels set in Maine; contemporary fantasy trilogy Carousel Tides, Carousel Sun, Carousel Seas, and mysteries Barnburner and Gunshy.
With the aforementioned first husband, Steve Miller, Sharon has written twenty novels of science fiction and fantasy — many of them set in the Liaden Universe® — and numerous short stories. She has occasionally been an advertising copywriter, a reporter, photographer, book reviewer, and secretary. She was for three years Executive Director of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc., and was subsequently elected vice president and then president of that organization.
FREE short e-story, published by Baen: http://www.baenebooks.com/10.1125/Bae.... This story is part of the Liaden Universe, but there are no Korval characters. I haven't read it thoroughly yet — only quickly scanned it — but I intend to. There is Friar Julian at an old Abbey with a broken organ, and Niku, a prisoner who will fix the organ for his freedom. Cross references with terms also in Necessity's Child: Bedel, Luthia, kompani, gadje
A lovely novelette set in a corner of the Liaden universe. REaders unfamiliar with the work of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller won't be lost as there is no backstory baggage to master. Just a very heartwarming story.
Although set in the vastly popular Liaden Universe this story can be read with absolutely no previous knowledge of it needed. A wonderfully clever result that makes for an enjoyable half hour read. I especially liked the happy ending.
