A novel about forbidden love, the choices you make, and discovering what’s important in life.
Lara Kearns has it all. She has her MBA, a successful career in advertising in Seattle, and she’s even living with her best friend and single mom, Robin. Reliable, dedicated, and eager, Lara is the resident go-to-girl, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Lara's that girl who has everything going for her…everything, that is, except for true love. With the big 3-0 on its way and no man in sight, Lara wonders if she’ll always be married to her career, or her cat, and never find the One.
But then, when she least expects it, a handsome and suave executive at her firm, Paul Mackenzie, makes a pass at her. Hesitant at first about striking up an office romance, Lara eventually finds herself falling for her charming colleague. And the best part? Paul is falling in love with Lara, too!
What happens, though, when the man of your dreams loves you…and his wife?
Battling with what the head and the heart want, Lara finds herself in a precarious situation. Life is spiraling out of control, but with the support of her therapist and friends, Lara must make a choice. Is she really prepared to chase after love…at all costs?
This is a provocative story about struggling between right and wrong. About what you will or won’t do for true love. About what happens when girlfriends make choices.

Discovered after I had read it that this is not the first book in the "When Girlfriends.." series, I got this free from Amazon and probably would have preferred to start at the beginning
Lara and her girlfriends are progressing through life, we meet Lara when she is in therapy and her life is going awry.
Lara is a high powered advertising executive, great at her job, able to support her friends financially and emotionally. That is until she ends up in a relationship with Paul who works for the same company. Paul breaks it off when he tells her he is married, then starts it up again even though he is still married. Then he tells her he loves her but breaks it off again sending Lara over the edge. She has given up on her friends, not able to cope with anything other than her grief.
Lara and her mum don't speak that much both having thrown themselves into careers after Lara's father's death. But an accident changes their relationship
I really enjoyed this story, and would very much like to find out about the girls - Sophie, Emily, Jackie, Claire and Robin alongside Lara

Hard for me to enjoy reading about an affair with a married man. Not something I am comfortable with. I struggled to understand how you can think so little of yourself to continue to say you love him when you realize what was really going on between the two of you. I continued to read the story because I wanted so bad for her to be honest with herself. This book would not make me want to read the others in the series. Just really can not say I enjoyed it very much at all. Have to be honest!
Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. It took a little longer to finish than I wanted but it was a good read.
So, I really didn’t like Lara in this book. She was self-centered, self-absorbed, a bit childish, borderline crazy, and making horrible choices. However, I really enjoyed Lara’s story. I never would have guessed that she – the rock, the leader, the go-getter, the “mother” – would be the other woman. That she would become obsessed with a man she could not have. That she would abandon her girlfriends because of some guy. That was surprising but that’s what made me want to read more of her story.
Lara was real in this book. She was such a strong young woman in the previous books yet because of a man that she shouldn’t have fallen in love with, she changed. These situations happen. How she dealt with it was not normal or rational but very believable. I think just about every young woman goes through a phase of “stalking” someone they think is “the one.” It may not be a married man, but it is usually some guy that is perfect for them – even if that perfection is in their eyes only. It’s a destructive phase that most women overcome and grow stronger from.
The other friends were present in this story to some extent. Robin, along with baby Rose, Jackie, and Emily were the major players. Claire was kind of there and Sophie really wasn’t a part of this story. However, all of the girlfriends were strong and level-headed and tried to talk some sense into Lara. They gave her that wonderful tough love and advice.
One thing that I’m enjoying with this collection of books is seeing what the other friends are/were doing during the time period of the previous book or books. With When Girlfriends Make Choices, the time frame overlaps with When Girlfriends Step Up and it also shows you what happened beyond what happened in Step Up.
Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book is you are a fan of chick lit and you like the slightly less “light” side of chick lit.
Will I read it again: I probably won’t but I will be reading When Girlfriends Chase Dreams for Ms. Page’s upcoming blog tour (my posting date is July 24th, so stay tuned!) and I will also read the fifth book in this collection, When Girlfriends Take Chances.
(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)
Savannah Page is on tour now with CLP Blog Tours and When Girlfriends Make Choices. I have also read When Girlfriends Step Up from this series and I highly enjoyed it. I was eager to get back into the lives of six very different friends, and get to know Lara a bit better from this novel. Now, this is where the book gets tricky. I could tell something was up with Lara from Step Up¸ because she becomes a bit shady when it comes to her work. She works as an advertising executive and logs in long hours, but you could just tell there was something else going on in her life. Turns out she had been having an affair with a co-worker – a married co-worker. In Lara’s defense, when they first started sleeping together she had no idea Paul was married. He never spoke of a wife at the office and didn’t wear a wedding ring. By the time he fessed up to Lara that not only was he married but had two children, she had already fallen in love with him. But then they pick up their affair again, and Lara is fully aware that he is someone else’s. She becomes a bit obsessed with Paul, wanting to do whatever she can to make him choose her. Her friends (once she finally admits about her double life) aren’t supportive of the choices she is making, but Lara just can’t let Paul go. For once, she wants to fall in love and be happy – but at what cost?
I had so many conflicting emotions throughout this story, because as someone who is walking down the aisle in five months, I don’t want to read about infidelity. But it was really interesting to get the perspective from the mistress. And like I said, Lara had no idea Paul was married when they first got together, and I do believe her when she says she never would have welcomed his advances if she had known. So I could understand why she was already in love with him and why she didn’t want to let him go, but it was still hard to swallow. I again loved the girlfriend angle, and how close the friends are and how they support one another. Looks like the next book follows Claire, and I’m really looking forward to reading that. So even though I didn’t quite love the affair angle, Page still writes with honesty, makes the story very realistic and easy to read, and I still recommend this series to chick lit readers!
Too backstory heavy at the start to really engage. Sadly, this author's Girlfriends trilogy has been a huge miss for me, when it appeared to have so much potential.
Phew! I did not think I was going to enjoy When Girlfriends Make Choices. I started it without knowing what it would be about besides being Lara's story. And I was reading it and loving it, though you know there are some not so good times coming up. The story is framed by Lara's therapy sessions now and her telling what happened to get to this point. So it was an interesting read. I was loving it, but then so heartbroken for Lara as she goes through some things. And I didn't think I would enjoy this story after she finds out about Paul being married because that is a hard no for me. But I loved it! I couldn't put it down. Because Lara is kind of a mess. It is good she is talking to someone as she needs it.
Lara always seems like the level-headed mom of the group. She takes care of the others when needed (see book 2 and all the help and support she gives Robin). She is a little older and she fits in that role. Only what happens when things start to spiral and she gets super crazy pants? Who can fill that role and help her especially when she is keeping everything secret from her girlfriends? Oh, I loved watching this lady who seemed to have it all fall apart and go full crazy pants. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next and how this would all resolve. Love is not always easy, love is not always logical, and you don't always make the best choices when you are in love. This was a fun read and I really enjoyed Lara's story. Now on to book 4!
O was looking for a bit of escapism and this book did not disappoint. It's the classic story of a group of friends and the support they have for each other no matter what.
I adore this series and the super strong friendships... Lara though in this book is very hard for me to relate to. I understand what the book was trying to say, but it's not my favorite.

Part 2: Recommendation
The most memorable quote from this book is this narrative from Lara: "You can't have Mr. Right (or who you presume to be Mr. Right) at the expense of everything. Not when that love hurts so many people around you. Just because you want something with all your heart doesn't mean you are entitled to it. Not when the relationship causes so much hurt, so much angst... No relationship should do that. No real and true love should be rife with anger and jealousy, fear and pain, shame and obsession. I'll love again. But the right love. Not the forbidden kind." I like this quote because finally, it shows character development that readers should've seen in the middle of the book not almost towards the end.
This is the first book that exposed me to Savannah Page. While I love supporting indie authors (because there are now more indie titles published that is professionally done, has enjoyable characters and amazing storylines), and I do enjoy reading Chick-Lit and Women's Fiction, sadly this book fell below my expectations because there are nine words that should've been spelled as "lounge" as in chaise lounge but was instead spelled as "longue" (maybe spell-checker failed or auto-correct kicked in? I don't know) and coming across it so many times made my straight hair curl with annoyance. On top of that, I have counted fourteen errors (grammatical and typos combined) sprinkled throughout the book which is a little too many for me and that doesn't even include the "longue" typos. I will not put them all down here in this review but if the author wants to know about these errors, she can definitely send me an email and I will be more than happy to provide them to her so she can update her book because we all know that books, even those that have gone through editing and proof reading, can still have a few errors in it that proof readers, editors, beta readers did not catch. This book has a promising storyline, real enough secondary characters, narrative and dialogue are okay. My problem with this book is with Lara. Her never-ending stupidity and obsession over Paul, a coworker she had an affair with and a married man at that, makes me angry and she makes me want to throw the book across the room. On top of that, you only get to assume Lara got her own happy ending with a nice, single guy! I actually want to know how her blind dates went and who Lara ends up with. So yes, I did not appreciate how this book ended because at 394 pages, the author could have cut off all the other secondary character's drama (or shortened it), definitely shortened the lengthy scenes depicting Lara's struggle to deal with her obsession and stalker tendencies (this part could be a very well written narrative instead) and probably at page 250-ish, the author could've shown Lara's character development (see this review's part about my most memorable quote) and spend the next 144 pages showing Lara actively going on blind dates and getting to know herself and the guys she has dinner with, ending with Lara finally falling truly and madly in love with one of them. With eight books in this series When Girlfriends, I am not sure I want to read the other books in the series mainly because I already got a gist of what happened to all the other girlfriends. Writing a series can be tricky but the author should've just focused on Lara and her story since this book is all about Lara. She could place a couple of hints for the other girlfriends and use foreshadowing so that readers would want to read the other books in this series. Overall, this book could benefit from additional editing and revisions.
What do girlfriends do when one of them strays off the path and engages in forbidden love?
Twenty-nine year old Seattle advertising executive Lara Kearns' life is on the right track except she hasn't found true love yet. When co-worker Paul MacKenzie starts flirting with Lara, she thinks she has found "The One" and falls in love with him, only to discover that Paul is married! Faced with the reality that their love relationship is really an affair, Lara has to choose which path to take: stay in the affair with Paul or walk away heartbroken. It's not always easy to make a decision when the choices are difficult, especially when it includes an affair of the heart!
When Girlfriends Make Choices is a emotional story about love, loss, heartbreak, choices and difficult life lessons. In the third book of the When Girfriends ... collection, author Savannah Page introduces the reader to Lara Kearns' story of forbidden love and difficult choices. Written in the first person narrative, Lara shares with the readers her emotional and difficult tale of falling in love with the wrong man. When her life spirals out of control as her head and heart battle over what's the right thing to do, she has the support and tough love of her close group of girlfriends to help her through the tough time and get her life back on the right path.
This provocative tale is written in a witty style that makes the reader sit up and ponder the choices that they and their girlfriends have made in their lives. It's a realistic story that deals with a difficult and taboo situation, infidelity, that unfortunately does occur between men and women. I applaud author Savannah Page for weaving a tale from the "other woman's" viewpoint, Lara's angst and emotions over her forbidden love for Paul is palpable, and her struggle between making right and wrong life choices is one that anyone can relate to in some time in their life, even if it isn't in regard to an affair of the heart. And just like the first two books in the collection, Lara's close knit group of five girlfriends rally around her with support and tough love to help her make the right choice in her life.
When Girlfriends Make Choices is an enjoyable and realistic story of love, friendship, emotions and life choices that is a must read for all women!
When Girlfriends Make Choices is the third book in the When Girlfriends ... collection.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by Chick Lit Plus Blog Tours.
This is the third book in the When Girlfriend's series, which is all about Lara Kearns. In the last novel (When Girlfriends Step Up), we left off knowing that Lara was single and hoping to mingle and that she was roomies with Robin and Robin's baby girl, Rose. Well, fast forward to this novel, and Lara is now in therapy! I was definitely not expecting that or the affair she was having with Paul! The affair with Paul didn't really bother me, don't get me wrong, I don't support affairs, but it just gave me that little dose of drama I needed in my life. Lara is such a strong woman, so it was nice to see her go through the motions of doing something it seemed like Lara Kearns would ever do (i.e. the affair). I enjoyed this book, although I wished it would've focused more on Lara's present as opposed to her present and past, but I guess in order to know what Lara was going through in this novel, we had to know what she was going through in the last novel. I was sort of let down at the end of the novel, because I had been rooting for Lara since the last book, and I just felt like her story was incomplete! Overall, I loved this book and I absolutely love this series...Savannah has done it again ladies and gentlemen!

What a tangled web we weave! Lara, what are you thinking?
This was an emotionally stressful story based on the subject matter. Lara, being the most level-headed one of the girls has herself caught up in an affair with a married man! I was so emotionally invested in this story that I actually wanted to go into the book and have a good chat with this girl because of her choices… She knows it’s wrong but she is such an emotional mess that she can’t seem to help herself, because she’s in love.
Thank goodness for her friends who aren’t afraid to tell her what they really think about the situation and to help pick her up when she needs it. The solution should be so simple really, but affairs of the heart never are.
A really good read about right and wrong and, like it or not, how our emotions can sometimes lead us to make the wrong choice.
A book that tells the story of Lara who gets lost in the love of someone she shouldn't have. This was AMAZING! Finally, a book that tells the story from the mistress side of things. Now don't get me wrong, affairs are very, very wrong but many will have one at least once in their life. This book is finally the REAL story. The story of falling in love with the wrong guy. The story of pulling away from people who thought they knew you. The story that every woman ought to read, whether married, divorced or dating.
This book was okay. Lara was a little annoying with her "fatal attraction" like obsession with a guy she can't have and who clearly did not choose her. I know that the heart wants what it wants. But following the guy home? Spamming his phone with texts? Creepy. But it does prove he power of friends and family. And just because you are going through something, don't assume that you are the first and/or only person to ever experience it. Other people get it. They get it.
Very well-written and I am sure absolutely realistic, but exasperating nonetheless. The main character is a whiny, immature perfectionist whose only goals in life are to be the ultimate career woman and to have her life defined by Mr. Right. This book had the potential to have a great girl-power message, but it really fell short. All these women from all walks of life could have been more robust characters, but they just didn't get fleshed out.
I highly enjoyed this book and look forward to following in more adventures with Lara and her group of friends. It was good seeing how her mindset changed throughout the book and how she dealt not only with her own problems alone. I think that this book will also help anyone who reads this will understand that not all affairs are " just because " but that feelings take over and all sense goes out the window. Highly recommended.
Hmmm....not sure about this book. it started off ok but then Lara kept going on about this married man, Paul! It got a bit tedious (almost like the first one) as Lara kept obsessing over this guy and it seemed like a self help book in parts but not as much as the first one. Parts of it were funny but just felt I needed to finish it to see what she did. Quite predictable but took an age getting there!
Ok let me just say that several times I had to put this book down cause Lara was seriously in trouble and it was just really frustrating to read the idiotic things she was doing. Then I picked it back up like 5 minutes later cause I just had to know what happened. Crazy stuff but definitely kept my attention and the book was overall pretty good.
This was so slow and painful. I absolutely hated Lara and her incessant whining. I get that we all do stupid stuff in the name of love, but seriously! The friends are randomly inserted like parsley garnish on a dinner plate and finally become meaningful around the 75% mark. The most redeeming thing about this book is that it is technically solid.
I enjoyed this book, even though I thought I was going to dislike it. I have not read any of the other books in the series, so this one is a good standalone. I will read more of this series, definitely sucked me in!
The main character is a complete and total idiot, who occasionally exhibits slightly psychotic behavior. The book was a good 50 pages too long, but I kept reading, hoping it would somehow redeem itself... Nope!
I wanted to smack the main character through 90% of the book. She annoyed me. I know you can't choose who you love, but I felt like she should have been a little smarter. She frustrated me. It was a good story of friendship but not really a love story, which is what I hoped for.
The premise of the book was ok, but the main story line just drug on far too long. The main character was so self indulgent it became a chore to get through the last few chapters.
I can't believe I read this entire book of drivel. It's books like this that give "chick lit" a bad name. At least I read it while working out, so I didn't completely waste my time. And I think it was free on Book Bub. Don't waste your time or money on this one.
A girlfriend should always be there to help you no matter what choices you make and Lara's made some doosies. You'll meet all of Lara's girlfriends and will fall in love with all of them. Great read!
