The Torture by Hope

"Al atardecer, el venerable Pedro Argüés, sexto prior de los dominicos de Segovia, tercer Gran Inquisidor de España, seguido de un fraile redentor (encargado del tormento) y precedido por dos familiares del Santo Oficio provistos de linternas, descendió a un calabozo. La cerradura de una puerta maciza chirrió; el Inquisidor penetró en un hueco mefítico, donde un triste destello del día, cayendo desde lo alto, dejaba percibir, entre dos argollas fijadas en los muros, un caballete ensangrentado, una hornilla, un cántaro. Sobre un lecho de paja sujeto por grillos, con una argolla de hierro en el pescuezo, estaba sentado, hosco, un hombre andrajoso, de edad indescifrable."

Nothing hurts more than hope. He who has nothing to hope for has nothing more to be afraid of. This is the case of the Rabi Aser Abarbanel, who stood all the trials of his torture when he had nothing to hope for. But when the prospect of freedom had loomed closer and closer to his reach, hope made its way to his heart and with it all the tormenting fears which are far more cruel than physical torture.

read for my Topics in World Lit class

I never rate short stories too high because I always leave with wanting more but this one was surprisingly fascinating. I enjoyed the build-up the story had; the dread and claustrophobic writing really accentuated that. I guess it does also incite a few points of consideration with the ways Jews were characterised and portrayed. I simply wished it *hit* more(?), but it did make me feel contemplative so I'll give it that.

''No conto cruel — em cujo cerne o fantástico e o sobrenatural raramente se imiscuem — releva-se a face mais hedionda da tragédia e da miséria humanas; sublinha-se a impiedosa frustração de todas as expectativas delirantes; gizem-se os mais excruciantes tormentos físicos e — sobremodo — psicológicos.''

Como dito pelo próprio autor, ele estava ''seguindo as pegadas do gato preto de Poe'', mas, dosando com uma característica própria: a ironia e a crueldade. Tanto é que esse é o nome com que batizou uma antologia sua: ''Contos Cruéis''. Essa curta — mas ótima — história se passa durante a Inquisição, o prisioneiro e protagonista é um rabino que recebe a notícia que será ''salvo'' pela fogueira. Isso depois de já ter passado um ano sendo submetido a torturas diárias. No entanto, ele encontra uma pequena brecha, que poderá salvar sua vida, uma luz no fim do túnel - que logo descobrirá não ser o que parece. É uma narrativa bela e brutal, mas o caráter fantástico é totalmente subjetivo e mental. Integraria facilmente qualquer outra antologia contos não-fantásticos
