Kenshiro suspected he’d been on the road now for well over a year, but he really didn’t know. It’s not like he kept track of such things anymore. When the undead first came, everybody thought it was a new strain of rabies that was sweeping across the globe. When the scientists of the world finally figured out the horrible truth, it was too late.
The undead took everything from him. His friends, his father, and the only woman he ever loved. He doesn’t know how he survived; it would have been better if he didn’t. Back then, he survived by running, but he doesn’t run from them anymore. He sticks to the small towns of middle America, because that’s where the essentials can still be found. Food, water, gas, and bullets. That’s all that matters now.
His days were filled with extreme violence, and mind-numbing solitude that he shared with the ghosts of the people he left behind. He doesn’t know how much longer he can do this. Sooner or later, something’s got to give. Until it does, Kenshiro is going to continue to make the undead pay for what they took from him.
In La Veta, Colorado, Kenshiro finds something that changes everything.
I’m liking this book a lot. We begin by following three different characters in this opener. Kenshiro is a very likable character even if he is somewhat dark. But I suppose if you’ve outlived everyone you loved and watched friends get taken by the grey ones you would be dark. Elliot doesn’t realize how lucky he was when he spied that smoke cloud. Had he not walked into town and found the stereo in the trash can he wouldn’t have lasted much longer. Starvation was staring him in the eyes. Now he has a guardian and mentor in Ken. NYC and Elle, along with her sister Kate, are with a group,of survivors living in one of the high rise office buildings. Tired of simply existing, Elle decides to talk to the helicopter pilot about learning to fly his chopper. Of course his answer is no…but thus begins a friendship between Martin and Elle. When a trip to La Guardia for repair parts for the chopper doesn’t go as planned she is shaken to her core after her first real up close and personal encounter with the zombies. I’m looking forward to grabbing the next book.
The pace just throbs along. I read this in one sitting! When I got hungry, I ate handfuls of Cheerios with sips of water to soften them! Bc I couldn’t put the damn book down!
Read this!! I don’t get into zombie books, but I got into this one! 👍👍👍
It’s a good story that kept me engaged throughout. There are a few typos that need correcting on future printings and a couple other minor editing needs. Things are set up nicely in this first book for the rest of the series and to me it has the feel of walking dead and last of us put together. I look forward to reading the next.
