--- Caretaking. You're doing it wrong. ---

Liam slept with his boss. Again. And lost his job because of it. Again. Set on changing his ways and tired of sleeping in his car, he applies for a job as a live-in caretaker, even though he has no experience in it whatsoever. He has a lot of practice in lying his way out of any situation though. Only problem is, his new boss - wheelchair bound owner of a sex hotel - is gay, cute, funny and oh, so fuckable! There is only one logical solution to Liam’s dilemma - pretending he’s straight. Brilliant!

When Ryan inherited his aunt’s B&B, he thought he’d hit the jackpot by changing it into a fetish sex hotel. Things didn’t go as planned though, all of his marketing efforts seem to fail, and the debt is mounting up. Being a wheelchair user doesn’t help in actively promoting his hotel, but his luck starts to change when he hires a new caretaker. Liam is open-minded, helpful and caring. All that Ryan needs from a caretaker to kickstart his business, but things would all be a lot simpler if he didn’t start crushing on his new employee. And even if, in some other dimension, Liam did return his feelings, how long can Ryan keep his fetish a secret?

The web of lies they weave around each other is more bondage than any of them enjoy.

I both loved and hated this story. I am going with four stars because even though I’m on the fence about the rating, these authors are so creative at weaving an intricate story.

I am not a fan of lying, and both of these characters excel at this. In fact, one of them thrives on a lie so deeply dark, that I found myself furious every time he would bring it up as truth. The duplicity felt absolutely abhorrent to me.

I feel like this book should be required reading in a psychology class, because it completely fucked me up.

On one hand, I fell in love with these characters. I couldn’t wait for them to get together and realize they would be so amazing as a couple. On the other hand, I was constantly on edge with all the lies. It was like an itch that you can’t reach and every time they lied to the other person I got metaphorical hives.

This book was full of contradictions. (Like most of us are) One of the main characters is a health nut, who runs every morning, eats healthy meals, and yet he also smokes cigarettes every day. He is pining away for someone he wants, yet continues to have sex with other people.

The other character hides behind his online site, yet is secretly getting off on the kink. He feels deeply shameful for his multitude of lies, yet they also sustain him.

“I loved it all. You were so sexy when you were helpless.”

“It’s like yin and yang, isn’t it?” Ryan swallowed and looked into his eyes.

And that’s exactly what this book was.

There is so much more I want to say, but I don’t wanna spoil it for anyone. I will mention there is a very weird secondary story within this story, about multiple missing women.

This one ends on a cliffhanger, let’s hope I survive the reading of book two…because I absolutely have to know what happens.

I’m not sure that I would have finished this book without my BR Dan and his virtual handholding. This was such a great book to discuss!

I had several aggravations reading this. It is not a bad book. It's just not my book.

1) Disappointment with the kink. I bought the book on the strength of the sample chapter in which our MC Ryan confesses his favourite Love Hotel themed room is . . .

“The Psych Ward,” he decided in all seriousness. Liam grinned. “That does sound kinky. Straightjackets and stuff?”

“Yup, and an exam chair, and disposable speculums. It’s the whole deal!”

. . .

“That sounds promising.” Liam nodded, lost in thought.

“What? Is that your thing?” Rodney laughed. “It even has cushioned walls. I reupholstered the whole room myself.”

“Me?” Liam looked at the other man while chewing on another piece of pizza. “I’m into bondage, so I like most stuff that restricts my partner.”

That is a promise, my friends. That is Chekov's pistol on the wall. Before the end of the book we will get to see Ryan strapped into an exam chair with an anal speculum up his ass. And why I paid out my $4.99. Because I am a pervert.

Very, very, very disappointing. Why does no-one write good medical kink?

2) proofing. As in, please get some. Misplaced apostrophes, a change in tense mid-sentence, and this:

"I don’t like to go on the grovel!” Ryan yelled from around the porch. “It could hurt my wheelchair!”

I actually really like this turn of phrase, as long as the authors literally mean grovel. Grovelling probably does hurt wheelchairs.

3) I would REALLY HAVE LIKED TO HAVE KNOWN before I started that this was a To Be Continued book. No resolution; cliffhanger ending. I was a pissed off bunny.

Saying "book one out of a two part series" does not indicate that this is half a narrative. It should say "book one of a two-part STORY". This is a serial, not a series. And I'd like this at the TOP of the blurb, not hidden at the bottom. There will be no book 2 for me.

I was disproportionately furious and felt like I wasted an entire evening.

4) Small stuff.

This is probably a cross-cultural thing, but here someone that provides personal care to a human is a caregiver. If you provide care to a building then you are a caretaker. So, there's that.

The "missing girls thing."

How did Ryan fund the lavish and expensive redecoration of the theme rooms? How is he paying Liam and two other employees if he has very few clients?

The MCs have one ugly collection of tattoos. Sad fries?

And, just for Steelwhisper. Consent: there is none. A caregiver and their employer should not enter into a sexual relationship, let alone under the circumstances which occur in this book. Ryan is the epitome of a vulnerable person at this time. Just sayin'. I'm fine with it *grin*

Prior to this I've been a big fan of Merikan's work., but that's been based on the sheer crackfic weirdness of Playing with Food and Clown'd. My first full-length book by Merikan was a disappointment, because the book is so restrained. The plot takes ages to develop: now I realise that's because it's being stretched out into two books! I wanted more kink. It's set in a Love Hotel with themed rooms! Get me that couple from Clown'd and stick them in this story.

However, aside from my personal disappointments, the MCs are excellent. They are extremely well-crafted characters and there's a wonderful rapport between them. If it wasn't for the banter I would have DNFd. That's a tiny lie. I kept reading because I was waiting for the medical kink. Waiting, waiting.

Still waiting.

If you haven't read a K.A. Merikan book before, don't read this book. I think you can only appreciate this chaotic crazy story if you already know the style of the authors and are not offended by the unusual characters.
Trigger warning: rape - not the finished act, but rape it is (not between the MCs), I don't think you should go into this book blind. Ryan's disability is relatively "mild" but the kink he has developed because of it is not ordinary.
So, yes that freaked me out slightly. Ryan's fantasies are hot as fuck, but also very weird.
Liam's kink, on the other hand, is rather tame. Well, for me.
The lies the two of them tell each other made me go up a wall. You know from the start that they would be perfect together if they would just be serious and honest for once. 😤😤😤
Besides, the dialogues are insanely funny. Not funny are Ryan's sexual experiences. He hasn't been that lucky so far and his "boyfriend" is also a real piece of shit.
Then it takes forever until the first kiss ...

It was like Liam was a shot of vodka after twenty years with the AA. 🤩🤩🤩

And then, well, the role-playing scene is wow and cringe at the same time.
So, I love the care taking. Liam really looks fantastic after Ryan and seems to have a good knack for it.
I think I need a bit of time before I can follow these two weird characters any further. Yes a nice cliffhanger, but not so bad that I have to read on immediately.
Oh what was really cool is the description of all piercings and tattoos at the beginning of the book.

Right sleeve: A luscious female mouth blowing out smoke and 'Cancer Resistant' written on the inner side of the forearm. 🤣😂🤣

too lazy and fed up with this book to write all the reasons why I hated it, but if you have read it then you know most of them.
IMPORTANT NOTE: if you are paraplegic and looking for representation, I do not recommend this.

3 Stars - Just!

I got to tell you all (if you didn’t already know) that I am not a very forgiving reader/reviewer. Appalling editing, long draw out storylines, mundane events, a failure to deliver on the promised kink and CLIFFHANGERS (!!!) really, really make me very unhappy.

There is so much wrong with this book in terms of execution and marketing. Firstly, shouldn’t the term be caregiver not caretaker? Secondly, this book is a serial not a series. Thirdly, the promised kink is mild apart from a scene or two. It’s all suggestive teasing talk, no show, not yet anyway.

But you know what? Despite the faults, I still liked it. And strangely enough I found myself being quite forgiving. Here’s why.

1)Ryan and Liam are flawed characters, but they are real and unique characters. They annoy me, they push my buttons and they screw up. Especially Ryan, Ryan’s moral compass with regard to his little secret is completely fucked up. His deceit sickens me and yet I think I know why he lives it, believes it and NEEDS it. He is one messed up man. But together these guys are entertaining enough and credible in their affection.

2)This is a self-published work and I fully understand the difficulties faced when you don’t have a professional editor to guide you. I always make allowances for this when starting a self-pub work.

3)English is not this author’s first language so I feel I should make further allowances and remark that she does a good job, considering. It is still not easy to ignore the switching of tenses mid-sentence, the bad grammar, lack of conjunctions, and the use of incorrect words in places.

4)The premise is unique and daring. This author takes a risk in dealing with handicap/disability (is that the right term?) kink and I applaud her for it. It’s not going to be for everyone but to me, it’s a fascinating study of what drives this particular fetish.

This story is long and yes, sometimes dull, but sometimes exciting too, it’s a slow, slow start to this love story and I do feel invested in the outcome. The chemistry sizzles and the banter and rapport between Liam and Ryan is what keeps it fun. I think I just expected more; I thought the sex hotel would provide some amusing anecdotes but it doesn’t – not yet. I thought there would be more to the medical kinks, but there isn’t. I thought the relationship (sexually) would evolve faster, but it’s not over yet so I have lots to look forward to.

The ending is a firecracker (ha!) and now I need to know what happens next. Ryan and Liam have gotten to me and hopefully I will no longer have to suspend my disbelief over issues and finally get some answers. This has lots of potential and I did like it after all.

OMG…Evil. EVIL!!!

All I can say is thank all the deities that I didn't start this book before Special Needs 2 was done. This is an awesome story, but it friggin' ends in a cliffhanger. No…NO! Bad Merikan. BAD!!!

::deep breaths:: 1, 2, 3…Equilibrium recalibrated.

This was awesome. Twists and turns and oh the places you'll go with a Merikan story. This has some interesting territory covered to say the least. A kinky room themed hotel run by a wheelchair bound owner, a couple "unique" employees and his caretaker. While there's some typical rooms, there's a couple creative offerings that just make you go--well, now isn't that interesting. Ratchet open that mind and just enjoy the ride.

Ryan is pretty darn awesome. Adorable, independent, kinky and smart fucker. He could be so cliché and he's not. I loved that Merikan takes a marginalized character and doesn't "perfect" him for consumption. Ryan's got variation and enough genuine flaws to be human and not just some poster boy for paraplegics. Don't get me wrong, you'll feel compassion for him, the man, not the impairment.

Liam, oh you misguided slut. Love Liam. Honest to a tee, well, at least about the important things. Fun melange of attributes and personality. Can't not like him. He's Liam.
“Well... yeah, but I’m not fucking to get a high score. I fuck because I like it.”

Secondary characters rock and the pace of the story, both external elements and the romance are well done. Other than the evil cliffhanger…Yeah, not letting that go. There is some creepy mystery going down that seems like Scooby Doo meets Psycho that starts here and clearly rolls into Book 2.

Not to mention that there is some get your rocks off kinky shit going down here. First off, if you're an ink fan--just enjoy. Bondage--bing. Medical play more focused on psychological than implement--bing. Oh and did I mention the porn shoot?

So, if you haven't figured it out by now. Just buy book one and two at the same time. The writing's great and the story is totally worth it and you're not going to want to stop when this ends. Just suck it up now and save yourself the pout later.

I like this book.
It's cute, like a puppy with three legs or a deaf cat or something.

Spoilers all over this review!

I originally read book on a plane and I wrote notes on my iPad which is at home so I'm going to wing it.

I liked this book. It was cute, fluffy kink for weirdos, but more for like, vanilla weirdos, maybe not clown rape weirdos. *cough* This book would be a great start/staple book for perhaps someone not really into anything too kinky but dabbling, or someone who likes a small amount of kink, like... I don't know, feathers or fuzzy handcuffs or something.
I think the reason I say this is probably just because in general, this isn't really my style of book. That being said, I read it because I adore these authors and they asked me to review. But I am glad I read it.

So yeah, sweet book. Maybe too sweet for me sometimes.

Ryan is in a wheelchair. It's totally this Hot Topic shopping grumpster with bondage pants and a pervert streak. He inherited his aunt's B&B and changed it into a sex hotel like they have in Japan. Now, I know all 'bout dem Japanese sex hotels mainly just because I know a good amount of Japan. So this idea was interesting to me, but man, Ryan fucking sucks with his money. First off, I get that it's his dream, but y'all gotta know that a Japanese sex hotel in NA probably isn't going to go over totally that great, at least without a lot of marketing or some really good connections. Also, he spends his money on always having a hunky caretaker around to carry him places SPOILERSPOILERSPOILERwhen he really doesn't even need it. I don't know why, but this totally bugged me! The way he spends his money! Am I getting old? I'm getting old. I want to lecture him or sit him down with a financial adviser or something. I guess I felt like how irresponsibly he spent his money was a reflection of his immaturity.

This is a good place to talk about Liam.

Liam aka Hunkasaurusrex.
He's your classic "I fuck anything and everything, but I love nothing and no one" type. But he meets Ryan and falls for him. BUT WAIT! Problem. Liam always fucks his bosses and he needs this job, so he has to make sure not to fuck Ryan because it'll create an awkward work environment where he may likely lose his job.
How does he go about this?
He pretends he's straight.
*insert picture of me scowling*

Now, I want to delve a little deeper. I like Ryan and Liam as a couple. They're both cute, quirky, smart, have the same favorite band, Liam can overlook that Ryan is in a wheelchair, and Ryan can overlook that Liam seems to fuck anything with a minimum of one leg, working or not.
I was hoping for the HEA this whole book, or even some really crazy, weird sex.
I loved some parts of the book. Some parts were so sweet and cute. I loved the dying of the hair parts, and the fries and the cooking. They were all a bunch of sweet, cutesy elements that I admittedly went "awwww" at.

But I do not approve of Liam pretending he's straight and lying to Ryan. No one approves, of course, not even Liam, but he kind of just goes with it. Being in the closest (even temporarily or even just in front of some people) is never a good option, my dearest Liam. Can't you just tell him the truth? If he's a good person, he'd likely understand and respect your choice of whether or not to sleep with him.

BUT I WOULD MAKE A TERRIBLE BOOK!
My advice I'm giving would honestly make the worst, most terrible book where Ryan was fiscally very responsible and invested in some small but profitable properties, and Ryan was a PFLAG advocate who helped underprivileged gay youths by teaching them about safe sex.

I liked the secondary characters a lot. They were charming, fun, and overall a good time.

I really really enjoyed the story behind the fetishism for paraplegics and Ryan's internet fame and audience. Those parts always had me reading faster.
The bad guy, those name evades me (I'm sorry- I totally forgot. I have such a short term memory sometimes, I'm surprised I can remember my own name), was totally evil and I loved reading parts about him in the story! He was sick, evil, twisted, and I loved it. My second favorite genre of books besides M/M is horror/thriller so this was perfect for me. I didn't see it coming really, I thought Liam was just being a friggin' baby. But this evil dude was sick and twisted and I loved it!

When Ryan finds out (by accident, no less) that Liam is really gay and has been a dirty little liar, Ryan is kind of like, "Oh. Well. Uh. Alright...." and handles it EXTREMELY calmly, and then when Liam finds out that Ryan can actually kind of walk, Liam loses his god damn mind!
Liam. Really. You're a kettle.

I have the next book, and I so badly want to read it right this moment (but can't, have to read other stuff first!) because I want to know if Liam will grow the shit up about the whole situation and see how the sex hotel can POSSIBLY make it after all the low points in this book!

I'm team Ryan right now. *pets his little blue head*

I had a really hard time with this book. For months I had been waiting and hoping for this book to be released. When I did finally get it, I was ecstatic. Now though, I'm not really sure why I was as excited about reading this. The cover was one of the main attractions. I love that cover, it's just... Wow, yeah... So...

There is a disabled character and I liked him. The cool thing was he was out and in need of a carer. So when he does the interviews he's honest about that. Ryan (the disabled character) had a decent sense of humor and I liked him, in the beginning. But as the book progressed I kind of got... I don't know, bored I guess? It was just not connecting with me after a while.

Then there's Liam. I normally don't read books with very slutty characters. Not that Liam was the biggest slut, but he had a thing for his bosses. Added to that he was bi, a bit of a turn off for me in his case. He lied about being gay in order to get the job. Plus he sucked at being a carer. I know he had to learn, blah, blah, blah. But for such an important job, you should have some experience, right?

There was a lot of drama. Liam trying to set Ryan up and then the guy being a weird freak etc... It kind of got old after a while. I was expecting the guy to be a jerk, little did I know what would happen, but right before... yeah, it became more or less obvious that he would do what he did.

The book ends... And there will be another one. One that I am willing to try. But I am hoping that it won't involve cheating, though I have my suspicions. This book is worth a read, I enjoyed the writing. It just wasn't my thing really.

I'll keep this short. There's something about K.A. Merikan's brand of MM madness and mayhem that I'm really enjoying. This book is quirky, odd, funny at times and definitely different. I would have given it 4 stars but the ending is just an abomination.
Actually, what ending?
I was lucky to have read other GB reviews and I had the next part already lined up but I have issues with authors abruptly ending one book, not even cliffhanging, just resolving absolutely diddly squat. Honestly, might as well have finished book one mid sentence.
I'll be honest, if I read this when it first came out I'd be furious to have to wait for the next part to come out. Not cool. I get that everything now has to be a series but there's an art to satisfying the readers AND making them want to come back for more.
Anyway, as a quirky read I liked this one.

Okay, here we go. First off, the book cover is super cool and right on it with our two MC's, Liam, hunky funky manwhore, and Ryan, a blue-haired sweetie pie with a host of issues that will make you go, 'say what?'

Ryan runs a sex B&B and Liam is his caretaker. We also have a former hooker and another sweetheart that loves puppy play. Oh, and there's a weird neighbor that is always ready with the stink eye. We'll have to keep an eye on him.

The world building is slow, slow, slow for the first half of the book but things do take off and when they do it literally explodes by the end, leaving a cliffhanger that goes right into Book Two. I hate cliffhangers and this one's a whopper.

There are three motzo ball-sized spoilers. Two are revealed by the end of book one and the third I'm sure will reveal itself in book two. With half a brain the reader can figure out what's going to happen which kinda bums me out.

Ryan and Liam's love story is worth all the other craziness so I'm happily jumping into Book Two. I have to see where they end up.

Now, why our guys think that lying by omission is the way to go, mental illness or not, is a load of baloney and rather hard to believe but I'm going with the flow cause it's a good story.

Oh and the straight jacket, ball gag sex was actually super hot. Goes to show nobody does it better than K and A.

Review written for Hearts On Fire Reviews

Liam is trying to make a fresh start. Really he is. Having had a string of bad relationships with previous bosses, he has decided to keep his job as caretaker to wheelchair-bound Ryan as strictly business. The best way to do that is to pretend he is straight. Things go well, and the guys have a great relationship with lots of funny banter.

As Liam takes care of Ryan’s daily needs (mostly carrying him up and down stairs and cooking), Ryan develops quite the crush on Liam, though Liam holds strong to his straight story. He certainly doesn’t make it easy on Ryan by being quite the tease here and there. Meanwhile, Ryan is one lonely pup. He has trouble meeting guys and is very insecure about his handicap. In addition to running his sex-themed hotel, he also runs a website where he shows his “fans” how he handles daily obstacles. Ryan ends up dating one of his internet acquaintances, and while Liam initially pushes Ryan to do so, his tune quickly changes once meeting him.

I breathed a sigh of relief when Liam and Ryan finally got together. I did feel bad for Ryan that every time Liam attempted to play out one of Ryan’s fantasies, things just never ended well.

So, there were a few things I enjoyed about this story, such as the funny banter mentioned above, and watching Liam and Ryan really coming to care for each other. But, there were quite a few niggling things that really distracted me. It felt as though there were too many random events occurring that didn’t end up coming together. I now realize this is part one of this story, so maybe that will change. There were many times that I felt things were dragging out, mostly between Liam and Ryan, which really slowed this story down for me.

As I said, there are a lot of random things going on in this story. I didn’t have any real issues with Liam’s deception, because he really was trying to be somewhat professional the best way he knew how. Ryan has a stalker, his pseudo-porny website, the hotel, the annoying neighbor, and then missing girls, etc. I had my suspicions right from the start about Ryan, and the way this ended, I was left feeling a little creeped out about him and his prior actions. It just didn’t leave me with a very good feeling. This being only part one, I am hoping that will change fairly quickly in the next installment. I wish I could have rated this one higher, but I just had such mixed feelings at the end preventing me from doing so.

From the very start, what attracted me most to the book was the characters, as well as the tone and humor of the writing, which came through in the blurb and remained the same throughout the book. Both Liam and Ryan are pretty young, and while they're trying to deal with the serious stuff life throws at them, and sort of manage, most of the time they talk and act like big kids. Their tattoos and piercings, as well as some of the really funny T-shirts they wear, add to the atmosphere of the book, as does the fact that Ryan deals with his disability really well. Both of them also have big secrets, and while Liam's is uncovered about two thirds in, Ryan still hasn’t come clean and I guess that will be dealt within the second book.

Liam is a great guy, but slightly chaotic. He's a chef by training, but has had a streak of bad luck (as he would call it), having been fired by a string of previous bosses when they ended their relationship. That right there had me grinning, the "having to sleep with your boss" kink is not one I have run into very much. Liam is determined not to make that mistake again. And Liam's solution? First, he applies for work as a caretaker, away from any restaurants that might have gotten wind of his "reputation". Second, when he discovers how attractive his new potential boss is, he tells him he's straight. Liam may believe that solves the problem, but I knew right away that was not the way to go…not for someone with Liam's libido and kinky inclinations. It did provide lots and lots of very entertaining situations as Liam struggles with his attraction and trying to figure out how to finally tell Ryan the truth.

Ryan is a very interesting character. He is wheelchair bound, but that doesn’t stop him from running a "fantasy hotel" with kinky themed rooms. The place used to be a B&B when it belonged to his now deceased aunt and uncle, but he has invested a lot of time and effort into sprucing it up. Too bad business is not going too well, but he is determined to make it work. He falls hard for Liam, but thinks he cannot have him because he is straight. None of his other efforts to find a boyfriend are easy or very successful though, he just wants Liam. Ryan also has a pretty big secret, and I thought the psychology behind it was fascinating. He isn’t ready to tell Liam the truth, and I can see how this might lead to major disaster in the next book…

If you don’t like big cliffhangers, wait with reading this until the sequel is published (planned for end of 2013). If you don't mind a bit of "Oh my God, how is the author going to deal with that?", you should definitely go for it now. This is a fun and entertaining book, written in a way that made me laugh, and the web of lies turning into a kind of bondage (and not the enjoyable kind) is very descriptive of what is going on. This novel also contains some fascinating insight into the life of someone bound to a wheelchair, not to mention several kinks!

If you like stories written with a snark-like sense of humor, if you enjoy reading about men who couldn’t be called average by any stretch of the imagination, and if you're looking for a read with lots of kinky scenes and some very hot between-the-sheets activity, then you will probably like this novel.

As explained by another reviewer, good book, just not for me.
Liam has just gotten kicked the fuck out from his ex-boyfriends, ex-bosses house and place of business. He has no where to go and has been living in his car until he sees an add for a caretaker wanted. He's desperate for a job, and anything that will get him out of his car. Since this is a live in position he's willing to do anything to get the position but wants to constrain himself since sleeping with every boss he's had hasn't worked out for him in the past.

Ryan isn't sure if its a good idea to hire this no experience, charming "straight" temptation of a man to take care of him but he's a masochist like that and needs help getting around the fantasy fetish hotel he owns.

Lies. The lies are never fucking ending. On both sides. I kept thinking, dammit how the hell is Liam going to come clean about this lie, then that lie. And the only way he can stop lusting after his boss in the wheel chair is if he finds him someone to date. What a mistake that shit turned out to be. Psychotic devotee that guy ended up being. Liam just couldn't take his jealousy any longer, he wanted Ryan for himself but didn't know how to tell his boss he wasn't the straight man he'd been claiming to be.
Lies were just the same with Ryan. Only his turned out to be a little worst at the end but we won't know how that turns out till the next damn book.

Liam is a nypho and is fucking throughout the whole book just not with Ryan. They don't end up getting together until A little more then half the book and there's no full on sex between the two. I didn't like that for all the time I waited and was patient we could have a least gotten one good fucking, but it was a no go. I loved the disabilities aspects and the one fantasy they played out but I wish there woulda been more focus on the two guys together. As it is I don't know how book two will turn out since the description hints at the two being separated. I guess that puts Liam back to sexing others when he never even went all the way with Ryan. That doesn't appeal. Maybe i'll read book two(?) since things weren't concluded in this book but that one doesn't come out till the end of the year.

A "Live Your Life, Buy The Book" Review

This is a really difficult review to write. There are so many things that I didn’t enjoy in this book…. correction, there are so many things that detracted from my enjoyment of this book. And all of them, pretty much, are editing. Believe me when I say – I never make a big thing of editing issues – I am not an editor, so don’t pretend to know what I am talking about when it comes to anything beyond obvious typos and continuity. This book had words duplicated, spelling mistakes, words misused (grovel instead of gravel) – things which somebody really should have picked up on before the book was released. There were weird continuity errors, for example, when the evening sun was pouring through the window, as Ryan and Liam headed off for the day. Ummm, they’re not Vampires :-P And yet – I still enjoyed the book. Kinda. I just didn’t love it as much as I had expected or hoped too. For me the saving grace of this book is the characters. Specifically Liam.

Ryan owns a hotel, left to him by his Aunt and Uncle. He has turned it into a fetish hotel – with all kinds of rooms, catering to all kinds of needs. He is wheelchair bound and needs a live-in caregiver/caretaker to help him in and about the hotel, as well as running errands and cooking. If he happens to be cute as well, then that is a bonus! Enter Liam ;-) and he ticks all the boxes! He is gorgeous (picture the best Hemsworth brother!) musclebound, and a great cook. The only problem is Liam has this habit of sleeping with the boss… and this complication often ends up with him getting the boot. Ryan says at the interview that he is gay (so there are no problems down the track with homophobia) – of course this is not great news for Liam, who is also gay and who struggles to resist a boss. He therefore thinks the safest option is to play straight. The subsequent “safe” flirting between these guys was a treat – a really sweeeet treat!!

Ryan is this mix of sweet doe-eyed innocence and down and dirty Fetish Hotel owner, all held together by lies. I hate liars, both in real life and in books! And yet there is something about Ryan that bypasses that – maybe he sees the lies as almost a barrier to being hurt, like his disability is a safety blanket in a way. I’m not sure why… but I just kinda forgave him. Although I am looking forward to seeing how he wriggles out of it when the truth comes out… I bet that piqued your curiosity! Liam is a liar too (about more than being straight). And so all my usual “trope no-no’s” are again laid to rest – as I just adored him!! His lies are not nearly as bad as Ryan’s – we all lie in an interview, or stretch the truth a bit, right? Rodney and Faye, Ryan’s other live-in employees are also great characters, and I would love for Rodney to get his own book at some stage. The bad-guy is pretty chilling – really scary and creepy. And one walk on character who I loved seeing was Kyle – a very sexy rocker, who I would love to see more of! We also see Matt Powers, a character from Queer Fear, which was pretty cool – I quite like this character crossover.

There is a story beyond the Hotel and Ryan and Liam’s budding romance – girls are going missing, some internet guy is after Ryan in a not-so-nice way and there is something not quite right with Roger, Ryan’s next door neighbour – what you do need to be aware of is that the book ends with a cliff hanger of sorts. The authors are pretty up front about that by saying it is the first in a two-part story, but it just left you with the feeling that some of the storylines were left too far open – there isn’t enough in the first part to really be invested in, some of the arcs seem to be almost just a mention more than a full on plot line. This means that the cliff hanger is not brutal. I have read worse :-P

I was so looking forward to read this – the premise had me really excited! Tattoos, fetish Hotel, piercings – my God the tatts even had their own glossary LOL - so, lots of things had me dying to read this book. But it just never really took off; maybe I took too long to read it – but maybe I took too long because it never grabbed me. Whatever. The book could have been KAPOW if not for the distracting errors, which is really sad. Yet I will still be getting the next book – Straight. Away!! … go figure ;-)

If you are that person who is tired of straight-laced, vanilla man on man sex, tired of the same old kinks and looking for characters that aren’t afraid of role-play or to use some kinky toys (some that come in a scary fluffy package) then read on.

Of course, you also have to like characters that aren’t quite what you normally see in romance. Nothing about Liam and Ryan or their friends is considered normal. In fact crazy runs away from them as fast as it can. If you want to try something entirely different, then Special Needs is most definitely for you.

I went through this book with wide eyes, raised eyebrow, shaking my head often and going; ‘really?’. You can say I’ve seen it all in romance (and that included vampire lizards with triple cocks) so it’s kinda hard to surprise me, but Special Needs did and with a tag: “caretaking, you’re doing it wrong” how can you resist?

The blurb is a pretty good introduction into the story and I can tell you that reading Special Needs is quite the journey. There are none of the typical traps you find in romance, though Ryan and Liam are not quite up to good communication. The story has characters that are deeply into the alternative lifestyle and not afraid to show it. They have an assortment of tattoo’s (not all of them pretty) and metal, and if the sex hotel hasn’t clued you in, a fetish for wheelchairs should.

The plot is extensive and thought-through and at parts, I felt, very well researched. The ‘romance’ is slow to develop. There is no walking off into the sunset and professing undying love after two chapters. There are several plot angles that make the story interesting and give it strong quality as the story is quite long. Trust me when I say you will never get bored reading this.

The story is a two-partner and there has quite the cliffhanger, but not to fear, the second part will be released in November.

The story is self published and considering that, it is quite well done. Plus, as I know that the authors are not native speakers of English, this story is quite an impressive feat. However, it does have some editing errors, including issues with spelling and grammar, and at times there are sudden changes in tense. Fortunately it wasn’t so bad that it took away from the story.

My guess is that Special Needs is not for everyone. You’d have to like guys who live an alternative lifestyle with very kinky fetishes (including medical roleplay) and have a not so glammed-up life. But trust me when I say if you are okay with that, Special Needs is definitely worth reading.

That was a very funny and light story that kept me on the edge all the time and caused wild outburst of laughter. I could easily relate to Ryan and Liam, not only during kinky conversation and sexy scenes, but also on the emotional level. I am absolutely fascinated with them! From the beginning, when I read about Liam during the interview I’ve started falling in love with him. He is SO cheeky but SO charming at the same time it's very hard not to love him, haha. He's gorgeous as hell, with a muscular tattooed body, and touch of madness. This guy could do just everything just for fun, or challenge :D He has so much confidence that there is no other option than submitting to him. And on top of that he will bring you a delicious breakfast to bed, because he is a cook! I just should start a fanclub of him <3

On the other hand, we have Ryan, who, behind mask of shyness and inexperience, hides his filthy side, a mind full of fantasies and fetish which he's not afraid of. It's amazing he decided to create a place where anyone can fulfill their sexual dreams :D At the same time I think there is a bitter aspect to him, because it seems that accident left him stuck in particular moment of his life. Despite being 25 years old, he's still innocent, honest and sweet as candy. I think Liam is a good guy, but he keeps getting himself in trouble, and Ryan brings a new quality into his life and his friendship with Ryan is like breath of fresh air. I admire Liam for trying to break the habit of sleeping with bosses, but he seems a bit of a masochist, haha. Why would he start working for such a cute guy right after making that decision? It does make their dialogues more spicy. I loved when they started fantasizing about each other in random moments, when they talked or looked at one another ahh <3 There is so much chemistry between them!

Generally, I thought that Ryan's disability fetish will be more stressed, but skipping the weirdness, I just forgot about it. For me he IS disabled as he pretends to be. It's a very curious topic. I'm intrigued what's going on with that :P and what Liam will say about it when he finds out.

I really liked Liam's brother especially with being voice-of-reason when Liam had morality problems. His malice and realism often bring Liam to earth and it seems they are friends and know each other very well. It is very funny how quickly Cole get embarrassed and I understand why Liam does it so frequently hihi

Surprisingly, Matt Powers from the "Queer Fear" anthology, and Kyle Goldberg had guest appearances! I didn't expect that :D I hope that soon the authors decide to translate Kyle and Nancy's story :D because it is unfair that I do know them while the other readers don’t! And of course, Liam-the-sex-addict fucked them! Why not when he’s such a hunk? :D I can't wait for the sequel and hope it will feature the boys fulfilling their fantasies in the other rooms of the hotel. I hope that Ryan’s sunny hotel at the beach and those two sexy guys will heaten up my cold winter evenings at the end of the year :)

I got this book for free in return for an honest review and I'm glad I did because otherwise it probably would’ve stayed on my TBR-shelf indefinitely.

The reason I wanted to read the book was the first line of the blurb: Liam slept with his boss. Again. And lost his job because of it. Again. Set on changing his ways and tired of sleeping in his car, he applies for a job as a live-in caretaker, even though he has no experience in it whatsoever. He has a lot of practice in lying his way out of any situation though.

That and the fact that it played in a kink hotel, was bound to make for a fun read. And it delivered: I read the entire thing with a smile on my face.

It were not Liam’s lies or his unhealthy habit to fall for authority figures that made the book so great for me. It was messed-up Ryan that made it intriguing. I don’t know if the author has done her research right, or hit a homerun guessing, but I love a book where psychiatric diseases are done right.

I read some of the other reviews and I think that most don’t understand what the author meant by Ryan’s secret kink as mentioned in the blurb. It is not bondage people, or being overpowered. He’s completely open about that.

I just hope he doesn’t simply get better miraculously in the next book, because well, disorder is a serious illness that (I just googled it) is very hard to overcome.

Poor, poor Liam. I can’t wait to see how he will deal with Ryan secret coming out (because yes, the end of the first book is quite the cliffhanger). I also wonder what part the creepy neighbor is going to play in all this.

I give the book 4 stars and not five because there were quite a few spots where I had to go back and read an entire dialogue again to understand it.

Ok K.A. Merikan have done it again with a crazy as shit but still suck you in M/M love story.

For Ryan he is a tattooed punk rock paraplegic owner if an erotic sex themed hotel who needs a care giver.

Liam is a tattooed surfer/chef who's hard pressed for a job as he has a nasty habit of sleeping with his bosses then getting fired. He's so desperate he lies about his sexuality to get the job, but the closer he gets to Ryan the harder it is to stay away.

With K.A. Merikan you know you are in a world of kink and for Ryan the poor virgin has a whole bunch of kink locked up in his head that only Liam has the key for. And together they play out their fantasies that may be on the wrong side to some but it works for these two.

But unfortunately Liam and Ryan's relationship has been started with lies and secrets from the start until the biggest secret of all comes out causing Liam to question everything and then we are left with a friggin' cliffhanger till fall to find out what happens. Will there be forgiveness or will this secret be too much?

Special Needs by KA Merikan is a very unusual and unique story that is written in two parts. The blurb covers the major points of the book, but to really appreciate the finer details, you really need to read this highly original story for yourself.

This is a character driven book, with a plot that does tend to randomly jump around from time to time. The characters are definitely not your average joe on the street, but each one has their own unique charm. This book definitely explores the kinky side of life with a kink-themed hotel, a handy man who regularly dresses as a dog, a freaky neighbor obsessed with gardening and keeping people away from his property, and a look at a VERY strange fetish indulged on line. The sex is very hot, steamy, and definitely NOT on the vanilla side.

The author's writing style is a little on the chaotic side, with a lot of typos, misspelled words, and the wrong word used in a sentence. (i.e. your instead of you're, among others.) I personally have a hard time believing that a relationship can start, let alone thrive under the weight of so many lies and secrets, and I really don't like how easily each other's lies and secrets are forgiven by the other. I've heard of cliffhanger endings, but the ending on this one feels like running into a brick wall. Personally, this book just isn't my cup of tea, but if you want to read a book that takes a walk on the wild side of kink, then this one is for you.

This will teach me to always, always check goodreads. I looked at Amazon's reviews off my kindle and bought on a whim cause it sounded kinky and fun. *sighs* STORIES have an arc. This has a loooong arc, which was troubling to me as I read waiting for several resolutions to the problems. This is not a story. This is half a story.

Oh yeah, and the serial killer neighbor? So not a surprise. Hell no he doesn't want his place to burn down, he's hiding bodies on his property. Now, maybe the author is setting up a great twist making us think this guy is the baddie and then changing it up... but if not? Yeah, bummer.

I want to know what happens, but my conscience may not allow me to buy a 2nd book. Yes, there is almost always more plot that COULD be told when a story ends. That's why I love reading series. A good author drops hints of what could come to keep readers interested in their world and/or characters so they'll come back.

A good author does NOT stop a story in the middle of the arc and say... to be continued for you to buy later so you can finish THIS story. Even individual stories in a serial should have a beginning, middle, and end! This stops smack dab in the middle.

I was pissed off. I'm still pissed off. Good writing doesn't excuse poor author practices.

Sadly, did not like this very much. The writing was confusing. Though it takes place in the US, I don't think the writer is American, which, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. But there were turns of phrases that confused me. "I have two more staff. A receptionist and a cleaner." A cleaner? The character's role is a housekeeper but cleaner? And Liam is referred to as a caretaker. He cares for Ryan's needs but I would call him a caregiver, not a caretaker. There were other instances that puzzled me. Then the random stuff that's thrown in. Ryan spills coffee on himself during a date and begs Liam to buy a blanket. Okay, but then we get odd sort of details about the blanket. Ryan owns a sex hotel, but we get bits and pieces about the rooms, the characters allude to chaining someone to a chair and "stuffing his face full of cock," but we don't actually get anything good until waaaay in the book. And there's all this stuff about BDSM, an odd outing to a club where people are wearing masks and one guy is walking on all fours, but nothing really meaty happens. And then, for me, the proverbial straw, there is a cliffhanger. Sorry, can't do it. While I liked Liam and Ryan, it took too long for ANYTHING to happen, too much random stuff, odd writing that distracted my attention. This book was not for me.

Wow, this book is SO ridiculous, LOL! It's completely over-the-top and in a total soap opera way! Ryan, OMF, this guy wants to be fucked in a psych ward but he freaking BELONGS in one! I! Can't! Even! Wrap my head around him! Get this: What? Even? The fuck? WHO DOES THAT?! And he's one whiny little bitch of a paraplegic!!!!!! Every second sentence is a complaint about how shitty he has it ... meanwhile ... O_O And then! SERIOUSLY!! WHAT EVEN THE FUCK?! I freely admit that things got a little too squicky for me - no wheelchair or dog or mental patient or whatever other bizarro fetishes here, thanks - but it's quite possible that the editing is actually worse than the content. I think a change of tense occurred at some point in the writing of this book because there are A LOT of sentences written in both past and present which is *extremely* sloppy and distracting.

Just finished the first book in this duet, when I bought this I didn't realize that it said Complete Story at the top. Or if I did I didn't understand it at the time. It was so cruel to realize the first book ended in a cliffhanger. I really enjoyed the first book, I was wondering how Ryan's little secret was going to come out, well at least one of his secrets. Liam has secrets as well just nothing so big I think as Ryan's.
Now besides the secret thing, I think Ryan is adorable, at first I thought he had a little bit of a mental handicap but he is just unworldly and very insecure. He does have a mental illness but not what I was expecting. In the synopsis under the themes it mentions BIID, and thanks to one of the authors I now have a better understanding of what that means.
Liam is cocky and a little full of himself, he applied for the job as caretaker to Ryan who is in a wheelchair. Never have done that kind of work before, he got the job....he has usually only ever been a cook but he couldn't pass this opportunity. They hit it off quickly and became good friends.
This book has some triggers, kidnapping, attempted rape. If you are not comfortable with any type of bondage, or role-playing sex games then this book is not for you!

I was first drawn to this book for the mix of kink with Ryan in his wheelchair. It is so rare to see a story about someone with a disability who also is allowed to have a strong, super kinky, sexual interests. In this case, not only does Ryan own a sex hotel, but he has a lot of fairly hard core fantasies that play into his immobility. He dreams of being held down, immobilized, and forced. And Liam has the perfectly complementary kinks, being interested in dominance and power over authority figures. Interestingly, at the same time as he has these intense kinks, Ryan is also frequently shy and timid about sex. He is very inexperienced, something he tries to hide from Liam. and often shy about sharing what he wants. But I really like how we see that even though he is a guy with physical issues, he is also a sexual person. And I love that Liam totally embraces everything about Ryan, scars and all.

Lots of fun, almost 5 stars. I'm not sure I am totally a fan of emo and excess piercing and blue hair, but I liked how well the main characters seemed to fit together, how well their relationship developed. They did seem to have good chemistry, a good spark, despite their chronic lying and psychological issues. And it was horrible that the story ended with a cliff hanger.

But I really enjoyed the action and plot and it didn't feel dry despite the long wait for sex. I think the two parts should have been one book, but I will read the second book, hopefully soon.

Fantastic cover and amazing story of those I never tire to read. So many thing behind the lines of plot:love, sex, secrets, lies, stalker, killer. Above all there are beautiful protagonists. Liam and Ryan are smart and hansome characters, both, hold secrets , but them are one splendid couple and I enjoyed very much reading about them. One writing light, bright, vivid, vibrant but intelligent and original, however speaking of disability or fetish stuff . I look forward to reading the next book.

I'm sorry I work hard and my time is valuable. I want to enjoy a book and emerse myself in it, not roll my eyes every few pages.
Don't get me wrong, the book had potential. The tattoos, the find-love-while-handicapalbe theme, the sex hotel...

Pup-please!

I had a few niggles with the book, like Ryan acting so young and the somewhat repetitive dialogue, but overall it was a good read; although it could have done with a bit more proof reading. It does end in a bit of a cliffhanger, but it's understandable since it is only the first volume.
