I'm Awkward, You're Awkward is an unconventionally humorous and motivating book written to equip and guide Christians so that they can engage in the lives of all people and still live as authentic examples of Jesus Christ. Many believers yearn for their lives to have greater meaning, and they long to reject the status quo by involving themselves in God's great purposes. By utilizing things like a dead prairie dog, fake ginger ale, and a false WebMD-imposed kidney stone diagnosis, I'm Awkward, You're Awkward can help to cure a prevalent awkwardness that runs rampant among the American Christian culture, inspire Christ-followers to connect with their non-believing friends, and make you laugh all at the same time.
Shelby Abbott is an author, campus minister, and conference speaker on staff with the ministry of Cru. His passion for university students has led him to speak at college campuses all over the United States and author the books Jacked, I Am A Tool (To Help With Your Dating Life), and Pressure Points: A Guide to Navigating Student Stress (New Growth Press). He and his wife Rachael have two daughters and reside in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
This book might be interesting to a high school student or a young college student, but as an older adult (who also works with the same organization the author does), I found it a bit lacking. The author seemed to work really hard to be funny (the currency of the realm these days) and to get you to like him, and the chapters seemed to revolve around those themes rather than how to share your faith in a relevant, non-threatening way with those around you. I was touched by the author's vulnerability as he shared about the pain of moving from city to city as an Air Force brat, his poor relationship with his father, and divorce of his parents. I've found that humor is often a way to deal with deep wounds and a way to keep pain at a distance, and I hope that the author finds personal healing in the faith he encourages us to share with others.
