ryouta wakes up in a hospital bed, with his childhood friend kyouichi sitting anxiously next to him, and his right wrist wrapped in bandage. on top of that, he doesn't have his memories of the last 3 months, and on top of THAT, he gets nightly dreams of him being raped by a 3rd year student the evening he got into an accident. the title of this novel is translated as, "searching for august 7th" and that's exactly what ryouta does throughout the book. while he waits for his memories to return, he strives to put the pieces together in order to find out WHO exactly raped him.
the summary of this book states that it contains a "love triangle" but... not really imo. the 3rd love interest, the student council president katagawa, obviously loves ryouta, but the story mainly focuses on the awkward and increasingly estranged relationship between ryouta and kyouichi. if anything, katagawa is left in the back and serves as a supportive character towards ryouta - guiding him to realize what it is that ryouta does and wants to happen in relation to kyouichi.
i enjoyed reading this despite being frustrated by the misunderstanding/miscommunication between the main pair. both guys loves the other but think and assume the absolute worst of each other, and this roadblock doesn't progress until the very end. despite... some things, overall, i liked kyouichi's character. he's a guy that doesn't seem amiable, but that's because he's a guy of few words. he's smart and a hard-worker, and wants to spoil and throughly take care of those that he cares about. he's not the typical asshole seme that i tend to see in misao's writing, and that was... nice. you might not agree with everything i said here based on his actions in this book but... he was a generally good character, in my opinion.
what i enjoyed the most about this book is trying to figure out the mystery of "that night" and who the real suspect is. misao writes in a way that makes you think it's "this" person when in fact, it's really "that" person. i was pleasantly surprised at the outcome since i didn't see it coming, but that's just me. there really wasn't a pacing issue, it was smooth sailing throughout. if anything, i had a problem with the ryouta's stubbornness and kyouichi's assumptions and emotional/anger-driven behavior. i wanted them to get over themselves and confess already. i wished misao wrote more about the student prez since he was a very interesting character. i also wished there was more involvement with him so that way, i can feel like this was a true "love triangle" story.
uuuum. don't really have much else to say. satisfied with the end. don't know if i would re-read this again, but i would definitely be interested in reading any extras/SS ever released based on this story. seeing a continuation of the end is something i am yearning for right now. so yeah, absolutely worth a read at least once. it wasn't omg amazing applesauce, but i was entertained. it was a good read, really.
